@DanielLawson But why? The columns all have different navigation bars. I'd say that separates them, no?

@DanielLawson Including you, congrats ;)
Did the contest rules get changed to exclude CW posts? I thought I had seen myself in the grand prize category but now I'm not there
I haven't been paying attention if anyone's already asked this

@jtbandes I'm not familiar with history (if any) of the rules but I do vaguely recall someone here in chat mentioning CW in connection with the challenge. Memorable because the expression CW meant nothing to me, and I had to ask what was meant by the letters.

@GrahamPerrin yeah, several people had been wanting them to exclude CW

found: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/38?m=5550403#5550403 about CW not about the challenge … sorry

Q: For Mountain Lion, how does Apple define the Transparent App Lifecycle (TAL)?

Graham PerrinApple's talagent(8) OS X Manual Page (2010-09-01, long before Lion was released) mentions but does not define the Transparent App Lifecycle feature. Some time before Lion was released, I understood that the TAL comprised: auto save versions resume. Now, I'm not so sure. (Suspect that versio...

@patrix yeah, that's an obscure question (and I don't like answering my own questions as often as I have recently) but it's something that's niggled me for the past year or so. I'd like to be accurate.
Vaguely related, something under Apple's Autosaving in Place Differs From Autosaving Elsewhere implies that for an explicitly saved document, subsequent autosaves elsewhere are next to the explicitly saved document.
I never noticed any adjacency to autosaved data, so that paragraph from Apple seems weird to me.

@GrahamPerrin I'm really unsure whether this question is in line with the FAQ. Most probably nobody outside Apple will be able to answer it and even then: what do we do with the answer? At the end, all that counts is the implementation
@DanielLawson Thanks! And a big thanks to whoever initiated and sponsored the contest.

@patrix I imagined an answer from a developer – someone outside Apple.

Hmm, maybe Stack Overflow would give better results then, I don't know how many developers hang out in Ask Different
But let's wait and see. You can always ask for the question to be moved in a few days if nobody answers it

7:44 AM
@patrix OK. No rush. Incidentally if you have 10.8 handy, what response do you get to this? which talagent

Have to check tonight (office is a windows-only environment). Did you try locate talagent already, maybe it's just not in $PATH?

@GrahamPerrin I don't have talagent
that's odd

@patrix in my experience, a surprisingly good developer presence, a nice mix in Ask Different

@GrahamPerrin Although, from Activity Monitor I see that it's located at /System/Library/CoreServices/talagent

@jtbandes smart … I'll improve the postscript to the question

8:21 AM
So, wait.
What's in the Apple TV update listed under the iOS 6 beta?
Trying to decide if I want to update mine to it.

I'd assume there's more than just that, though.

and a five column layout
or a main row plus overflow rows

Yay, now to pick my prize. Tricky!
For those winners who do not have a Magic Trackpad already, that would be my first choice if I didn't have one already.

@stuffe It's my only choice actually. Keyboard and MM I already have, a Superdrive I don't need. But I've been curious for quite some time now how a trackpad works with a desktop machine anyway so I'm looking forward to give it a try.

Have a trackpad, have both size (wired) KB, have an (unused) mighty mouse, have a fakesuperdrive USB case with my genuine SuperDrive inside already...

Ah yes, "natural" scrolling. Will be a good time to switch to that as well then (and probably drive the rest of the famility nuts in the process)
Pick another keyboard to pair with iPhone/iPad then

1:07 PM
@jtbandes They did not, AFAICT — they didn't want anyone to qualify for something then disappear from the list.
@GrahamPerrin returns nothing
@stuffe helpful recommendation, but I think I'll go with the superdrive for my MBA.

Can’t wait for OS X 10.9 Sea Lion now.

And why is my markdown derping?!

3:48 PM
@jrg In the case of most apps I would say, 'Great! Now it'll be expanded and improved faster.' But in the case of TextMate it seems more likely that it will just be abandoned :(
That said, Chocolat is out of beta and very nice, so I'm pretty much okay with ^.

jrg
@NathanGreenstein Interesting. I haven't used TextMate in ages, but back in the day is was a lot better than the competition.

@jrg Nowadays it seems Sublime Text 2 is all the rage.

jrg
@MathiasBynens Even in the "cheap skate" linux world, yes it is.
The big thing about ST2 isn't that it's good - it's that it's cross platform.

ST2 does look pretty powerful. Nice multicursor stuff and great keyboard controls.
Planning to try it out soon.
And yes, it would be nice to have a good editor that I'm comfortable with when I have to use Windows/Linux

jrg
(I mean, it is good - but that isn't really what makes it popular in my opinion)

3:57 PM
It's the first (as far as I've seen, at least) Linux-compatible editor that's powerful and has a decent UI.
(No offense to other Linux editors, I just haven't found them as polished)

jrg
Oh, i totally agree with you. :)

That is FANTASTIC

jrg
Heh.

Seems TM is still good nowadays. I haven't used ST2 enough to compare, though it does seem to have great features, especially being cross-platform.
but being Mac-only can be a good thing :)

It can be

I have been a member for 2 years on Arqade
and that's still a TERRIBLE name to type :/.
