@Allan Very good explanation.

Thanks...I hope I was able to help. And If I haven't said it before..I appreciate all your work here. It's been invaluable and I've used your example as a "template" for my work.

Aw shucks, I feel the same way about so many people here and just try to help out on occasion, pay forward what I’ve received.
Thank you for the kind words. I learn a lot from you as well :)

Mostly that I'm a PITA. :-)

No - I love people with opinions and experience and challenge others. Just needs a bit of humanity and humbleness when people don’t see through to the wanting to help parts...

Opinions and experience I've got. :-) I can definitely attest that a text medium is tough, tough medium to convey compassion and understanding. But I spent my time cutting my teeth next to devs and engineers who were a very direct bunch.
@JBis - I share your concern about the site. It reminds me about the whole Randi Harper/FreeBSD fiasco. Which ended up with FreeBSD coming up with an ill conceived Code of Conduct: yro.slashdot.org/story/18/02/17/0826206/…
Poor leadership cost FreeBSD a number of good players and it's taken them what seems like eternity to recover from it.

@CaldeiraG my quick Bing-Fu couldn't give me lightning female to 3.5 male adapter. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7661700
@nohillside did you miss this question on the tag?

Is there any information regarding what type of OTA software updates Apple can force without user interaction on iOS?

grg
@JBis I’ve never heard of any, what’s the context here?

Native app updates? I never see them getting updated, but they work with so less bugs, while so many App Store apps push one update every week or so

The can force anything, are you asking what they’ve done in the past?

9:56 PM
In what circumstances can they force it? Like can they force it on a locked device? Must the phone restart? Etc.
I'm going to ask on InfoSec and link here

10:33 PM
@bmike Do you have any specific examples? This would be helpful for research purposes.

Background critical updates get pushed periodically - same with carrier settings.
Your locking has nothing to do with when it checks for updates or APnS wakes it from sleep

Locked devices are encrypted. How does is bypass that?

10:52 PM
Or must it wait until the device is unlocked to perform the updates?

11:17 PM
Sorry, let’s get out of chat and into a proper question. Updates run when the os is booted and network is on
i think I’m talking about something very different than you based on your lock / encryption phrase

I'm not sure if I should ask here or on InfoSec. The question is really about how no interaction (forced/silent) OTA updates work with encryption.
