8:00 PM
HAPPY NEW YEAR AGAIN!

Election ends "momentarily"
1,108 voters were eligible, 430 visited the site during the election, 144 visited the election page, and 86 voted

Winners are Daniel, Jason Salaz, and bmike.

that was fast

Congrats.

I would hope they don't have to manually generate the data
I've had openstv open all day just waiting to plug the data in :P. The non-automatic part is someone at SE bestowing the diamonds.

8:01 PM
Congratulations all!

I'd be crying if I weren't working. (You can tell by my chat history how much work I'm getting done... >_>)

congrats everyone!

Why does OpenSTV print the results backwards?

no idea

It is Open Source.
... for $99 :/.

8:08 PM
theoretically you can charge money for OSS, but no one does because it's free to redistribute

you can charge for a service built on open source code/software

any word on who won the other elections?
I'd run it myself, but I'm on my iPhone

Ask Ubuntu and what else?

check elections.se

that's so annoying to do :/.
it has TERRIBLE UX
@jrg Congrats dude! Ask Ubuntu: Winners are jrg, Bruno Pereira, and fossfreedom.

8:14 PM
diamonds for everybody!

Cue Carol Channing.

jrg
@JasonSalaz thanks! :)

Gaming: Winners are agent86 and Oak.
anything else is listed on elections.se or not ended.

jrg
Sweet.

Wasn't Oak a Pro-tem?

jrg
8:16 PM
Not sure.

yes, yes they were:

@JasonSalaz oh, and did you know about this tool? - instantstv.appspot.com

Indeed I did not.
What a shame that there's no permalink (even tempor-link) I could refer people to.
Looks like someone just copy / pasted OpenSTV into AppSpot :P. I'm sure that's the intention though.
(And was probably done by the people that do OpenSTV.)

make sure you don't accidentally go to instantstd.appspot.com. that's not nearly as fun.

:|
Thanks for the advice, Kyle.

8:20 PM
that's why I'm here

'grats guys

Thanks Dan 10

now gimme 10 mins to catch up on the chat ;)

Interesting meaningless factlet courtesy of Mike Elgan: "You can now buy an iPad for less than the cost of a single share of Apple stock."

indeed
Imagine what would have happened if you bought even a single share of apple stock and not an iPad.
Talk about appreciation of value...

8:29 PM
Boring election.
No covers ups
No scandal

No hanging chads

Imagine what would have happened if I'd put the money I'd set aside for Grad school into Apple Stock (at 12, four splits ago). Had a serious conversation w/ my dad before cutting the first check to NYU. Decided to invest in myself. Foolish in hindsight.

No sleazy revelations
And a result you could have sent in on a postcard

Feel free to reveal at will @stuffe, the tape is rolling.

Right, what do we do next? ;)
(apart from download the results and analyse like crazy)

8:32 PM
Hey Kyle, would you happen to know exactly what sharing method SE uses for Twitter and FB?

I think it all goes through a single service
right click a twitter or fb icon on a question and loil at the domain

mmmmm

Tim Cook audio stream from Goldman Sachs Tech Conf. starting soon

so umm
there's no src on the links
<a id="twitter-share-40326" class="twitter-share" title="share link to this question on Twitter">share [tw]</a>
Which means I get to dive into JS...

I do not know how on earth to read those results.
As in, I mashed then in the opens thingy, and they just stare at me, mocking my brain

Yeah, STV is weird.
The last line is all that I bothered with.
I'm just going to yank the plain text urls at least for now.

Hey, if I read this properly, @wheatwilliams came 4th - nice one!

@stuffe that's what it looks like to me too
...and he was supposed to be dropped from the election, don't know why the community team didn't

Glad he wasn't
Should be encouragement to start hitting the meta/chat button more
I'm glad I decided to run (on a bit of a whim when there were only 3 runners) as it's forced me to man up on the community side

Cook is talking about Apple's initiatives of inspecting their suppliers.
@stuffe And indeed you have.

8:43 PM
the Ask Different Livecast, with your host, @JasonSalaz

Liveblog, perhaps. The Cast is apple.

@stuffe Me too - you had my vote.

Reminds me of hitting up Macworld for keynotes, only I only have a passing interest in factory conditions.
Awww, cheers @bmike, but I suppose we shouldn't really open the rabbit hole up too much, suffice to say the right result tho

I'm very excited for @JasonSalaz too - he's been such a mainstay here for a long time.

:>
Thanks bmike.

8:47 PM
Right, I'm off to the cookery chat room, they were talking about eating cats just as I left a couple of hours ago!

@stuffe purrfect - you've got to cook them well or else their parasites turn you crazy

I heard tabby, snowball and boots won the Ubuntu election.

Can you link from one chat room to another? There were a few classic lines being tossed around in their earlier

@stuffe yes

Just use the normal :3737373 number?

8:49 PM
just paste the permalink
it gets oneboxed

As a mushroom, I'm all for fur. Various animals keep eating my friends.

Sounds like someone ate some bad fungus.

@Daniel I think there's a badge for that.
Getting 10k of rep from the point bump for linking your main account = [badge:trying too hard]

hahahahaha
Speaking of, I would like to know how to do badge links in chat.
Whenever I post something like [iphone] in chat, I see the little animation that it's trying to parse.
But nothing ever happens. Maybe it's just the oneboxer that's picking up to a single [] instead of more.

@JasonSalaz you must be unaware of the [sitename] feature
there we go

8:56 PM
Awwwww. That's actually kinda lame :/.
[askubuntu]

[askubuntu]

NOPE

huh

[stackoverflow]
[stackoverflow.com]
[stack overflow]
nothing works!

8:57 PM
hahahahahahahaha
So... I wonder if that means. [au]
Nope

(by the way, this is yet another place where we're "apple.se" instead of "Ask Different")

well yeah
[ask ubuntu]

[ubuntu]

weird

@KyleCronin rubbing sand into a sore spot again?

8:59 PM
@bmike indeed
got it
ubuntu.se
that was... non-obvious

Wow
Tim Cook just said something like: If you gathered everyone in a hotel today working on the hottest PC apps... nobody would be there.
And followed it up with, do it for iOS, and everyone would be there.
indeed the big three work
Huh, even se does.
[meta.so] Apple Meta
Yet another one, what is mso?

TIL about apple-touch-icon.png

I mean, wow

jrg
[meta.se]

9:03 PM
wtf
That's absurd.
Didn't know it could be escaped though, nice.

jrg
anything can be escaped, just use the backticks.

Yeah, that makes sense, just never really thought about it.

anything
it can!

Daniel's going to fit in just fine. At least with Kyle anyways.
/me facepalms

So glad you got the (bad) joke

jrg
9:05 PM
Wait you guys having elections stil?

It ended an hour and four minutes ago
Official results not yet posted, but data is downloadable, so the winners can be seen.
Just not yet officially confirmed by SE

jrg
Ah, I see now.

Not yet acted upon by SE :).
/me = impatient

jrg
ah I see. :)
@JasonSalaz congrats, you'll make a good mod.

Thanks jrg. Same to you.

9:13 PM
Snapseed (photo adjustment) for iOS is free today.

for those who didn't get it free at Christmas...
must be desperate to build up a customer base

I don't think Nik is desperate. They're pretty well known if photo-plugin/adjustment circles.
I bought the software and recommend it regularly to my iOS/photo friends.

I got it free in the 12 days thing, not actually started it yet

I use it all the time. I've been doing a lot of "iOS only" photography. I have four photos currently hanging in a local show that were all touched by iOS at some point.

NIce
I kinda stick to the built in app, or camera+ if I need to burst mode

9:28 PM
@stuffe Once day sales are actually a very powerful motivator with little downsides from anyone I've actually known that implemented them.

Snapseed is nice because you can create masks and make adjustments to parts of photos--for example, bring out details in a shadow area without effecting dark areas elsewhere.
Snapseed doesn't take photos. It's an editing package, not a camera replacement.

@jaberg I haven't used it - but when I saw it was NIK software - I nabbed it for evaluation later.

I presumed (wrongly it seems) that it was another snap&modify like camera+

They've been doing serious photo plugins for a very long time. Their Photoshop and Aperture tools command between $55 and $350 each if memory serves.

@bmike Most likely my #1 goto post processing App. Still use Photogene for collages, and have a handful of others for special purposes, but Snapseed is generally the first, and often final, stop.
Their Silver Effects black and white plugin for Aperture/Lightroom/Etc. is amazing.

9:34 PM
sooooo many apps, particularly in the snap and muck around category
makes it hard to choose which to use.

@stuffe I've been removing them left and right. Snapseed makes the cut.
Take a few minutes to watch the tutorial videos.

I have the pain to live through again when I get my iPad.
Right now I just use the upload and share features of a lot of these apps, and dump originals into iPhoto. Might actually do some local work on the iPad in future

Okay, whats the secret to formatting that link so the page appears here?

provide the link only on a single line

jrg
Just doing it by itself.

9:40 PM
no commentary

Q: app for sending messagges or data to my computer for iphone or ipad?

betoI need an app to send messages or data to a computer, does someone knows any?? , I have been searching but I dont find anything, can someone please help me I need it but I dont find

Got it.

what a remarkable question.
Almost tempted to list every app I have ever used...

For all instances of remarkable that indicate deserving of remarks
I'm trying to be charitable, recognize a potential language barrier, etc.
iChat?
mail.app?
Time to step away from the question pile for a bit. Just not a good day for me.

I downloaded the election file and replaced the numbers with the names of the users
then sorted it
the result is the link above

what's with the 0s?

9:50 PM
a 0 indicates no vote
that first line is a bit of a puzzler - don't know why anyone would cast 2nd and 3rd votes but leave the first blank

@KyleCronin to test the STD software

someone who thinks far too tactically, and understands the system far better than me perhaps

(ok - i should call it STV)

line 42 also has someone casting a 1st and 3rd vote, but not a 2nd

in theory - it should not matter since everything gets ranked up - voting for one 3 should be the same as one 1
(but take everything I say with the knowledge that I live in the precinct were more than one person wrote in The Lizard People for a recent election that got national press coverage for our senators)

9:54 PM
I got 2 first votes :) And neither were even me :)

No worries @bmike. I grew up in Chicago and several of my dead relatives cast votes for you.

@jaberg I hope several times, no less

Early and often. Using both married and maiden names.

Line #1 voted no #1? weird.
But you all said that already.

indeed

10:05 PM
Thanks Teal'C

so, just bought a Drobo
or, rather, just ordered one
$199

Buy me one too.
I already have the disks.

if you have $199, you can get one
drobostore.com, code VALENTINE50

which one?
I want the FS IIRC
F5?

ah, then no
the 4-drive one
though at this price you could buy it, use it for 6 months until you have enough for the FS, and sell it for about what you bought it for
this model is going for ~$250 USED on eBay
cheapest one: ebay.com/itm/…

10:18 PM
Grrrr.... Address Book is failing me today
Dear Address Book on Lion - please tell me something I don't already know. http://cl.ly/EDQf/Address%20Book.png This is precisely why I want them merged…
I'm not yet done complaining about Address Book app. http://cl.ly/ED1r/Address%20Book%20frustrations.png Why not use the labels for each iCloud account? Please? Grrrr…

wow, that is pretty annoying

no keyboard detected. press a key to continue

@KyleCronin I can't figure any way to expose which account contains which contact or get around this. I'm wondering if there is a Fantastical or BusyCal for addresses that I have somehow missed. I cringe to think that Outlook may be the "premier" contact management solution for Lion at this point.

@bmike Are you trying to do a one-time merge, or are all of these accounts active?

routine maintenance is the goal.

10:23 PM
I don't think they planned for people having 4 iCloud accounts

Definitely not. And my single iCloud account doesn't even appear in Address Book. My contacts are considered local.

All are active and will be for at least 6 months. I'll probably cull one very shortly - and if I can't find a workaround, may launch a server for CalDAV to get all my professional contacts there and iCloud for my personal ones.

I assume those were accounts that you "subscribed to" from within Address book?

It doesn't matter AFAIK. Normally I enter the primary account in iCloud and the tertiary ones in Mail, Contacts and Calendars.... pref pane. I've been enabling them and disabling them to suss out where the overlap lies. It's painful since my current WiFi is atrocious.

I understand the thinking behind not allowing subscribed accounts to merge with the primary--or commingle.

10:27 PM
@jaberg Really - when I explicitly select two accounts and ask to merge the contacts?

Sorry Mike. Wasn't aware that there was a function for that. I thought you were using Merge Cards.

The correct behavior should be to merge and leave two - with a warning that one is Local and the other on iCloud account X - or to pick one to be the master and then let you know where the deletion happened so you can correct it on the off chance the 50/50 roll was wrong.
Anyhow - time to head offline - will have to shave that yak at a later date.

10:48 PM
@Daniel @JasonSalaz @bmike Congrats!!!!!! You are the three that I voted for!! (not in that order)

hmmm. is it possible to shut off the 'alerts to badging' feature of Terminal in Lion?
seems like no
background alerts to badge counter, that is
Looks like I'm about to ask my next question on the site.

@daviesgeek "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords." -- Kent Brockman

@ArgyleMarionette haha
I'm actually looking forward to seeing how they all work together.
That bumps the number of mods up to 5.
@ArgyleMarionette 2 rep for your edit.
Good edit. I was about to make it myself.

Out of curiosity over a question I saw on Ask Different, I created a poll on web browsers for you. My main goal is to find out why people use one browser over another. Is it actually better, or do you just use it because it’s the default browser? The survey is for users of all OSes, including iOS and Android. We will come back in a couple of weeks to post the results from the survey.

Please feel free to take the survey multiple times if you regularly use multiple operating systems. You can visit my survey on Google Docs here. …

@KyleCronin Remember this ^?
It finally got posted.
I encourage all of you to enter in the survey!!
