A question about official site titles … at discussions.apple.com/message/15773451#15773451 I referred to the 'Apple' area of Stack Exchange. More recently I bookmarked the following:

… and now, this room which seems to have the official title "Ask Different Chat". So, is 'Ask Different' gaining greatest favour? (I do like it.)

@GrahamPerrin though the official name of this site is "Ask Different", it is also sometimes referred to as "Apple.SE" or the Apple Stack Exchange site. This is because that was the name of the site until the public launch earlier this year, and also because most Stack Exchange sites are don't get a different name upon launch and are referred to as <subject> Stack Exchange

"Apple.SE" and "Apple Stack Exchange" aren't wrong per se, but they're not as correct as "Ask Different", especially when referred to outside the network

I see your answers above as different from meta.apple.stackexchange.com/questions/205/official-site-title/… only because that answer involved the domain and a different tag line

the post you reference is a discussion from back before the site officially launched when we were deciding on the name. The top answer, which is mine, is where I put forth the name "Ask Different"

however, you are correct that there is no post or page that explains what the official name of the site is, but since the name is in the logo it should be fairly obvious

and finally, the domain askdifferent.com does work and redirects to the apple.stackexchange.com URL

The visual header is clear enough but (personal habit) I always see the title as above everything else. Hence the confusion.

I've been pushing for all the remaining places where "Apple" is used to be replaced with "Ask Different", including the domain, but without much success:

apple.stackexchange.com/faq doesn't mention Super User in any special way; superuser.com/faq doesn't mention Ask Different in any special way; meta.superuser.com/questions/2967/… ("official policy") seems to clarify that Super User would like more Mac OS X questions.

I understand that nothing should be migrated needlessly. To someone (not me) who's new to the caboodle, what do people think is the best way of steering to one or the other to ask or answer a question?

there is some overlap between the scope of Ask Different and Super User. Mainly, Ask Different is for Apple and Super User is for computers, which means question about Macs fall under the scope of both sites.

OK. I guess that I should promote Ask Different, whilst maintaining awareness of Super User and the overlap.

the moderators are understandably concerned about that happening

but apart from that, the fact that there is some overlap doesn't mean anything

but if you're going to be promoting in an Apple context, like your post on the Apple discussion board, then it would make more sense to promote Ask Different as there's other Apple stuff that we allow (iOS, etc) that Super User does not

Is this chat area: (a) focused on, or oriented to, the Stack Exchange aspects of Ask Different; or (b) more broadly a place for any reputable user of Ask Different to chat about questions that are (or might be) within the Ask Different area?

Yeah, I burned and booted from my DVD just fine.

But my VirtualBox Lion VM wouldn't boot.

:-) early days of Lion, I guess that the majority of people have used their home-produced media only for installation, or for reinstallation without FileVault 2. FileVault 2 just one example of where, for reinstallation, Recovery HD must be not external. Maybe other examples will arise, I haven't had (probably will not have) time to test.

The FileVault 2 example had, for me, a very blunt and unmistakable effect: system unusable. Didn't bother me, as I was prepared with a quick workaround.

What was the workaround?

Defocusing from FileVault 2 example: my concern is that there'll be a whole 'generation' of installations that may have far more subtle, less blunt side-effects of not following Apple's method.

Well, since the recovery disk downloads the OS from the Internet, I don't think that'll be a big problem.

Results from my test suggested that damage arising from use of the hacked USB flash drive was not simply undone by a subsequent reinstallation using Apple's method.

When you say "hacked", what do you mean?

In an ideal world I'll never need to post the workaround as an answer to a question in Apple Exchange :-)

However AFAIR I had no joy with booting a Lion VM from that particular .dmg

/me thinks out loud … somewhere in the VirtualBox area I shared a hint that might help some users to get started with a Snow Leopard Server VM … let's see if I can find it, maybe a clue to kickstarting a Lion guest … also consider setting the guest to something other than a Mac for a while; it almost certainly will not work whilst in that state but the change back to Mac might trick something … some of these memories are vague (sorry)

It's surprising how many sites insist I need Flash to view their videos, yet they work just fine in Safari once I pretend it's an iPad. Why not just serve up HTML5 video to all Safari visitors? The once-ubiquity of Flash is long over - OS X doesn't even ship with it anymore, and Windows (IIRC) never has.
