... Does Lion have native NTFS support?
I don't think I've ever installed ntfs-3g or anything, but an ntfs formatted drive I have is showing up in finder...

3 hours later…
8:13 AM
I think OS X has had read support for NTFS for a while, but if you can write to the disk then it is a new feature

12 hours later…
7:44 PM
Chrome has had some really laggy scrolling for me as of late
I've manually copied over my bookmarks bar to Safari and I'm going to give it a shot for a while

I didn't test writing.
I'm fairly certain that it did not have native NTFS support in snow leopard.

well, I could be misremembering then
though I have to ask: why are you connecting NTFS drives to your Mac?
...(crickets)...

8:16 PM
it's a disk from quite a few computers ago
looking for an old music repository

I see
well, just don't make a habit of it

:P

9:08 PM
this is disheartening - my top question on SO has been closed

Q: Rails or Django? (or something else?)

Kyle CroninI'm interested in learning a web framework. The two big ones, as I gather, are Rails and Django. Which one is better/faster? Is one better designed or more logically consistent than the other? Is there another framework I should look into? How easy is it to set up and administer a Rails or Django...

and apparently Programmers doesn't want it either
so it's left with nowhere to go
I'll admit, it's not an objective, non-discussion question, but it was one that got a lot of interest
you can tell it's old because of the comment "Don't worry about the FAQ"
nowadays if a question looks like it might possibly be against the FAQ if you look at it a certain way, it's promptly closed, and very shortly after deleted

9:27 PM
@KyleCronin bummers! I hadn't seen it till now. Some good information there...

yeah

9:44 PM
@KyleCronin That sucks!
Such a popular question...

I have to say, Stack Overflow was really different back then
a real sense of community

Clearly. "Ignore the FAQs"

@Nathan well, things could be OK with violating the FAQ if they were interesting or useful enough

Yeah, kinda like all of our 'tips and tricks' and 'essential apps' questions.

also, the scope of SO is different now that Programmers exists
yeah
I try to run AD in the spirit of the old Stack Overflow

9:51 PM
I like the AD 'vibe'
small enough to really feel like a community
with... looser rules.
but stays clean

yeah

changing the subject for a second:
I'm playing around with a Lion recovery dvd I burned.
was it suuuper slow for you guys?

I tried restoring the ESD (or whatever) to a USB flash drive
but I never could get it to work

hmm. did you burn with Disk Utility?

didn't try burning it though

9:54 PM
ah
HOLY CRAP THE PASSWORD RESET TOOL IS GONE
how can I hax now?
...i mean reset my password when I forget it

hold down command-S when starting the computer
then reset it from the command line

what's the command line tool?

passwd
so assuming your user account's short name is "nate", you type "passwd nate"

nice, thanks!

then enter the new password twice

9:56 PM
whew

not sure if it works if you have encryption enabled

not really worried about that part :)

@Nathan, my question is the opposite of the one you said it is a duplicate of.

@JimMcKeeth Oh, sorry. Someone flagged it and said it was and I didn't read well..
Opened.
Sorry there
Thanks for telling me

Sure. Thanks!

10:50 PM
@KyleCronin Looks like passwd isn't working with Lion.
But you can do it by opening the recovery partition, opening Terminal, and running resetpassword.
Which brings up a nice GUI.
I guess Apple just wanted to move it out of the average user's way.
which I guess is a good move.
@KyleCronin I think you asked about how Adobe stuff appeared in Launchpad?

11:25 PM
the way they develop software just boggles the mind
every other Mac app vendor has a single executable you move to your /Applications folder
not Adobe...

Yea. I think it's because they try to give themselves as little work as possible to port between platforms.
I assume their apps are in C (or some variant), and their updaters/helpers seem to be Java.
Almost 40% of those apps are extras (uninstallers, 'managers', etc)

that's what so crazy about it
Microsoft is hardly better
they have their own uninstaller, their own updater, et cetera

All the crud they put in for Office...

which is odd because Office for Mac is definitely not just a port

Yeah, that is strange.

11:32 PM
my guess is that it's legacy code

Canon and Epson both also suck at this, but those are direct(ish) ports.

both existed on Mac OS before OS X

true
But for Canon's stuff, I'm sure they port directly from the Windows code.

and now they have such a huge codebase based on obsolete APIs that it's costly and time consuming to move
yeah, hardware manufacturers are usually terrible when it comes to software

There's one piece of Canon software that I like:
It's got a nasty interface, but it's powerful.

11:54 PM
remote live view? so you see what the camera sees?

yeah.
It's nice for doing stuff with a tripod (set exposure and line up the shot from the computer)
