@stuffe @stuffe, OK so what was the value that NeXT had that Be did not. Was it Steve Jobs (was Amelio really naive enough to to foresee a hostile takeover should he go with NeXT)?

@Ben Absolutely no idea! I'm just saying that total cost, as a primary metric, was probably not a motive. And I suspect that Emelio probably thought that BE was not so much too expensive (clearly not, as they had and indeed paid more for NeXT), but "overpriced" for the value (whatever value he saw at the time) that an acquisition would gain them. NeXT clearly cost more, so you have so assume that they valued it more. As for which aspects they valued, who knows.

Perhaps it was that BE was just a software shop, and they were getting hardware skills from NeXT too. Perhaps they saw an opportunity to bring back ex Apple staff (not just Steve) who were known to have the right skills and vision, maybe this was less risky than the unknowns over at Be - maybe the reduced risk factor added value.

I don;t know a lot about that time, or of Be, but as I (probably mis)understand it, Be has an OS, NeXT had an OS, application development frameworks, and Hardware skills. I think the middle of these was probably the killer portion. What good is a great OS with no Apps or Dev tools? When you look at which bits of NeXT still have resonance within modern Apple, the thing that I think of is all the Dev APIs that allow people to use the OS to the full.

All the APIs, even new ones, are all NS_Whatever - NS for NextStep.

that's my understanding. Again, once my model finally arrives, I can confirm.
