@BenBrocka depends on whether the modal is used for display only (where the only action is to dismiss the modal), or if it is an interactive dialog (where there is data entry that can be lost be premature closure)

@Erics Yeah, I realize there are some modals where an action is required, but often when the modal is a separate workflow where "do nothing" or "cancel" is an option, clicking out is logical

in this case it's a modal delete dialog where the only options are perm delete and cancel. I wanted to make cancel much easier to do.

@dnbrv depends if it was meant to cause offense. A US user nammed Fanny-Pack probably isn't trying to offend Brits

If the only possible interpretation of the phrase is offensive (and it's SE policy to remove offensive names, which I believe it is) than changing it seems warranted

@BenBrocka Oh, yeah. That's nothing but a curse word. I don't take offense (one of the most famous Internet pioneers in the ex-USSR uses the same word as his handle, only spelled differently) but it's a professional community (I think).

Hey guys, Can someone make this call for me? In the application (web) the page is centered to 100% width of the body. When vertical scrollbars are introduced the page 'shifts' to the left aprox 8px.. This is annoying (to me at least), and the only sensible solution is to force vertical scrollbars to always be visible (or live with the shift).. so which do you think is less offensive / obtrusive, always showing vertical scrollbars (active or inactive) OR live with the shift...

the only time the moving content is really annoying is when it moves because you hover over something and that moving causes the thing you're hovering over to move also

if it's predictable then it's probably ok

entire page wrapper div shifts 8 px to the left (8px may vary depending on your OS/Browser and it's scrollbars)

Add another wrapper div that is 100% width

GMail also uses AJAX calls & doesn't shift when scroll bars appear

I've forced a vertical scroll bar on our site because most of our users are used to IE which does that anyway

the shift is very noticeable because it introduces movement which our eyes are trained to see (actually you only see movement)

An offset that always accounts for the scrollbar would be nice, but they can be difference sizes...IMO forcing the scrollbar isn't a big deal if most pages will have it, since it introduces consistency

@BenBrocka It makes a ton of sense: mouse is a better simulation of head movements, so when we walk we tend to turn the entire head to look up rather than just the eyes

Yeah, I notice when using the joypad I tend to focus on physical movement of the character rather than moving the camera/aim

Keyboard makes movement less natural but the mouse makes the "head movement" very natural

It's not like joypad movement is any more natural.

also, you're eyes tend to follow your mouse cursor.. which gives you a natural 'head move' feeling.
