Fair enough, but I don't really want to get into questions about that data as it's not public.

I can understand that. I just think mentioning that it's your own experience from A/B testing and not just something you "noticed" makes it better.

That's what'll set off the, shall we say, less moderate feminists.

I think it's a leftover of the initial site of stack overflow, as programming is more male.

Most of the users on this site have almost no presence on SO though, so I'm not sure if I agree with that.

Maybe it's about men being more competitive and working for points etc. seems to fit into our psyche more.

I am a dude myself, though I am someone who is not big on points as much. Reddit, of all things, turned me around a bit.

Karma that is. I think on the SE sites, it's a lot more earned.

Also the 200 normal points a day cap makes you work for it over time.

Yeah, I know. But I kinda appreciate just the near immediate feedback, even if it is more based on whether people like it instead of any actual quality.

And I do think it works okay as a sorting algorithm

For forums, at least.

But it encourages reposts too much.

Yeah, that's something I've thought about trying to fix, too, but I'm not a UX expert of any sort.

For fun, of course, not like they'd listen to me.

My basic idea was just at least having a way to notice the exact same image has been posted again, and give some but not as much karma, and give karma back to the original poster, too.

Problem is, people love their karma so much that I'm sure even that would be worked around with newly compressed files or just moving away from images to video.

Maybe there should be a separate flag to say "repost"

and if enough people flag as a repost, then you don't get any more karma for it.

Well, I think reposts do have some value, as it does often expose the content to new people. Reposts do get upvoted after all, implying a lot of people haven't seen it. And I know all but a handful of times I had never seen the repost before.

And, yeah, I know reddit will handle their own stuff. I just thought it was interesting to ask someone who seems to be in the UX field.

It's an interesting question in general, but not one with an easy answer

The only way to really know if a suggestion is workable is to test it, and that's never going to happen on Reddit.

Can you imagine the drama if they changed the system?!

I almost want them to just to see the drama unfold :)

It'd be worth it for the sudden switch in opinions on reposts alone!

Do all forums become little-c conservative in that way--where all change is bad?

A lot of forums do, but mostly ones where the incentive becomes entrenched

So Reddit is an example where a lot of the value is lost among the reposts. The users getting this value want nothing to change, and they're vocal
