@Joe I think you have a good point, but after reading it, I can't be 100% sure it's spam b/c the app wasn't linked to and the way it was described as only for the iPad generally isn't how developers describe their iOS-only apps (plus it didn't seem like there was bragging that it was only on the iPad, but more of a warning).

The whole "works like a charm", however, seems like it's overdoing it and the reference to their kids is nominal -- no details specifically about how the kids took to the app or any frustrations they may have had. Iffy, for sure, but that is how some people speak/write.

I've got a question about parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/10683/… -- how is that any different than a price shopping question? The question is essentially asking about "school shoppping." The answers will be highly-specific to that one region (less than the population of NYC) and subject to the politics of the time (so useless in the future). {I'm just trying to understand the thinking, so thanks in advance.}

@JeremyMiller While it is highly specific to that region, the region still encompasses more than 4 million people.

Note that Joel Spolsky referenced a question about software companies in Montreal, a city of less than 2 million population, as an example of questions that should not be closed as too localized

So being specific to one major city, to me, seems irrelevant as far as whether it is a good question, based upon that discussion from meta.so.

Of course, that may be different in other cultures. I don't know (which is a good reason for me to not feel comfortable closing it)

@@Keen There is a specific answer to his question that can be linked with "research" if you know what you are looking for so I tried to explain that aspect too.

@Keen The only way I see it working here is if he was to say something like, "I know they drink a lot in the book and there is of course, the destruction of Earth" How do I decide if my kid is ready to handle reading these two pieces of material within the book? With the most recent edit though, I think it actually could work if it was, "How do I determine if my child will understand this book or not?" Although, he'd get the same answer I already offered on SciFi.

Whether it gets closed or not, the individual that posted the question has certainly been offered lots of help on the topic.

@Joe I actually have asked a question that is closer in intent and content, (I think) but, it was borderline and seen as a "shopping question" by some (as well as answered as though it was a "shopping question" by some as well. It is one of those somewhat tricky kinds of questions that can easily swing one way or another and definitely leaves room for interpretation.

The question is now way out of date for me personally on both the front of understanding better how to go about asking these borderline kinds of questions as well as - I'm not having this challenge anymore (actually, we're having trouble with the plethora of GREAT literature out there for her to read that we just don't quite have the time for all of it at the moment) It'll probably swing back around though - it seems these things come in waves at times.
