Q: How do you measure a child's "learning to learn" skills?

blundersLooking for a standardize test for measuring a child's "learning to learn" skill. While IQ, EQ, etc. is related, I'm looking for a test built for the sole focus of measuring these skills.

Is this question really any improvement over the previous version?

@Beofett It's a definite improvement -- it's very specific -- it just doesn't have the answer I think he wants to hear (see my recent answer).
@Beofett I'm tempted to take a hatchet to his first attempt, because it is dancing around a really important question that parents should all be thinking about, it's just extremely badly formed.

@HedgeMage I still am having trouble parsing the difference between what he is asking about and the existing standardized tests. Ability to learn is a component of the loosely-defined-and-altogether-too-vague measurement known as IQ, so how does the ability to learn specific study habits differ?

@Beofett No, just the opposite... IQ is one component of the ability to learn.
@Beofett did you see my response to your comment on that question?
I used a computer analogy for you :)

@HedgeMage just refreshed and I see it now
@HedgeMage computer analogies are always helpful :)
however, I'm not certain your definition of IQ matches what I had in my mind

@Beofett As an example, I know VERY high IQ people with lower-functioning autism... they can do math that most people just don't have the processing power for, but teaching them what the symbols mean and what kind of answer to give so other people understand it, and the underlying mathematical properties is very very hard. Once they've learned to do it, doing it is easy.

granted, it has been a loooong time since I've been through the test, but I recall that specific areas of ability were measured, such as spatial relationships, concept associations, etc.
@HedgeMage I'll just have to acknowledge that my education on the subject was never very deep, and is probably woefully out of date, anyway
I still believe the question would benefit from some major clarification

2:41 PM
@Beofett Right, but those all have to do with types of processing power, not the ability to take in and use new information/skills.

@HedgeMage I always linked the two
but that's based upon a sample population of one

IQ is a component of learning ability, not a superset or equivalent.

Then is Erin's answer really that off-topic? She essentially says "I don't believe there are any standardized tests that measure this, and if there were, I would question their reliability"
her request for clarification certainly does not belong in an answer, though

@Beofett I didn't delete, I converted it to a comment -- she asked the OP for clarification.
I do hate how conversion to comment looks so much like outright deletion, though.

@HedgeMage ah, I missed that
@HedgeMage yeah, it makes sense that it would be inserted to the appropriate chronological place in the comment history, but it can make it difficult to spot
incidentally, will you be available for a call tonight? I've been trying to find time, but it's been unusually hectic. I'd like to work out a plan before we actually leave :)

2:55 PM
@Beofett Yep, I'll be around except during the Community Team conference call (3pm to forever Eastern time)

@HedgeMage excellent. I'll probably give a shout some time after dinner, before Hunter goes to bed

okay :)
@Beofett How's this, as re-written?

Q: How can I help my child learn to learn better?

blundersI'm looking for strategies to improve my child's learning skills. I want my child to be a life-long learner -- to pick up new things easily, and to learn even when not being given formal instruction (for example, by picking up a book on something that interests him and learning to do it). What ...

Hi all! I just saw an ad from the Juvenile Protective Association that featured a very emotional image and a powerful slogan:

@HedgeMage Massively better.

The campaign had other images too but they are a bit worse still.

3:10 PM
Interesting. On the one hand, it's a message worth passing on. On the other hand, if the "Juvenile Protective Association" is what I think it is, it's a little creepy to have it coming from them.

I am not evaluating the backgrounds, but I felt that the image and the message is strong.

/me nods
Quite.

@Beofett @HedgeMage I agree: This question is finally one I can understand in terms of figuring out what an answer could be. Good edit!

@TorbenGundtofteBruun Thanks!
@TorbenGundtofteBruun Regarding this question of yours: I'm kind of unclear about whether you are worried about presents in particular or "stuff" in general:
2
Q: How can I teach that gifts are only for special occasions?

Torben Gundtofte-BruunIt seems that today's world has gone mad in consumerism and materialism. Parents give their kids presents on all kinds of occasions where presents didn't use to be given, like random holidays throughout the year, and name days, and half-birthdays, school-end and school-start, and so on. Stores se...

@HedgeMage nGinius suggest rewording to "how do I teach my child not to be greedy" which actually fits quite well. I need to rephrase my question in that direction.

4:13 PM
@TorbenGundtofteBruun do it do it do it! :P

@HedgeMage already done :)

4:53 PM
:D
I'll try to answer when I have time between other tasks

@Beofett @cabbey how do you feel about this question? We discussed it earlier but it's still open and I'm not really decided on what I would recommend:

Q: What are important legal and financial steps for new parents?

SomeGuyWhat are the most important legal and financial steps for new parents in the US? For example, establishing a will, purchasing life insurance, setting up a college fund, etc...

7:17 PM
@TorbenGundtofteBruun I think it needs to be either fixed or closed. It doesn't look like the OP has logged in since we asked him to fix it. I'm okay with closing it, if we put in a comment saying "once its cleaned up we can see about re-opening"
