Q: When upgrading our toddler from a cot to a bed, how do we keep him in his bed?

We think it's time to transition because he often tries to climb out (but fails yet), and during daytime playing he manages to climb in by leaning a pillow against the outside of the cot - but he cannot climb out ...

Basically, our son (25 months old) won't fall asleep alone, and we don't want to sit passively in his room for an hour each night. We're now trying @HedgeMage's approach: putting him to bed and leaving his room, and again, and again... until he learns that there's no choice but to stay in bed. After a few evenings so far, I'm not sure it's working. We try to be quiet but do keep his door ajar so he can hear us. I hope this'll work eventually.
