@ArturMeinild frankly, the comments on that question, by people other than the OP, are not OK, we really need to be nicer
@ArturMeinild since that is the answer, someone should post it, though I would rather the OP get the credit for their work
@stumblebee <3 good command line questions make everyone happy

@Zanna in all fairness, I think the dupe I linked to explains everything. The OP is not making it better by throwing a fit ... 😬
Also, the irony here was the OP wouldn't be lectured on package management, but then discovered that the answer is a lecture on package management. I'm allowed to think that's somewhat funny.. 🧐
My initial comment was merely an additional explanation to the dupe thread "Why don't the Ubuntu repositories have the latest versions of software?"
If my first comment came off as blunt, I'm actually sorry, because that wasn't the intention.
@stumblebee yeah, that was a good team effort 😁
07:27
@ArturMeinild it did to me, but it wasn't as bad as the vindictive downvoting comment by someone else
'try another distro', isn't that about as much of an eff off as a comment can be?
I don't blame the OP for objecting
07:42
@Zanna I get your point, although I didn't really see it as such, because it was based on a wrong assumption: If you want bleeding edge packages, Ubuntu simply isn't the answer. But fair enough, let's leave it at this.. 😉
okay

@stumblebee Please check out this Q&A if you didn't see it already. I was thoroughly impressed with the creativity of the answers.. 😁

Q: How to fix "chmod" permissions after running "chmod 222 /bin/chmod"?

Charming_YardI ran chmod 222 /bin/chmod to know more about chmod. After that, when I run /bin/chmod, I get permission denied. I tried to change the permissions of chmod back to 755, but it doesn't work. Does anyone have tips about how to fix this?

08:31
wow, loads of useful stuff there!
@ArturMeinild sorry to be a hater today haha but I can't refrain from saying that I disagree with the first line of your answer - my feeling is that there are many things that should never be done with chmod (except for fun) as many posts on this site illustrate XD
08:57
@Zanna I also agree with that - I've rephrased. 😁

Autoflagging disabled until restart

even I added an answer
@ArturMeinild nice
10:36
@Zanna I couldn't agree more! :D
@Zanna A sed answer really needed to be there!
Oh, you meant in the other question. Nice answer there too!
@ArturMeinild Ah, one of my all time favorite threads! It was impressive seeing all these creative answers one after the other almost in real time!
@Zanna I asked the OP to do that.

@ArturMeinild @Zanna I have added an answer based on the instructions I found in netplan's GH. I haven't tried it as I say in the answer, but I don't see why this wouldn't work. If you see anything wrong or have any objections on the answer, feel free to tell me.
Also, according to this, it seems that the latest netplan goes into proposed repos. So that could be another option, but since I'm on Fedora, I cannot even see what version is on this repos, or test a dry-run. If someone could check that and maybe post an answer, it would be nice.
@BeastOfCaerbannog thank you <3
@BeastOfCaerbannog how to tell?
$ apt show netplan.io
Package: netplan.io
Version: 0.106.1-7ubuntu0.22.04.2
@BeastOfCaerbannog ikr :D
@Zanna The post I linked is about lunar-proposed. Since the upcoming version is codenamed Noble Numbat, I guess that the latest version should be in noble-proposed? So the command to run would be apt install -t noble-proposed netplan.io?
@BeastOfCaerbannog seems perfectly valid
@Zanna Thanks!
$ apt -s install -t noble-proposed netplan.io
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
      apt needs root privileges for real execution.
      Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
      so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'noble-proposed' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
11:21
Ok, so that's not working. Could you also try apt -s install -t mythic-proposed netplan.io?
sure :)
And I'm not sure if the proposed repos depend on the currently installed version. But if you have 22.04, that should be the same as OP's.
@Zanna :) I appreciate your help!
@BeastOfCaerbannog same error for that
I love testing haha
@BeastOfCaerbannog yep, 22.04 here
@Zanna great! So that rules this option out. Building it from source seems as the only option.
@Zanna Hahaha
@BeastOfCaerbannog I suppose one has to add the repository to sources
11:27
I also edited the question. The votes are currently zeroed. I don't find it a bad question really.
but doing so would cause immense chaos
@BeastOfCaerbannog seems fine to me too
@Zanna Yeah. One should be very careful with that.
you can add an old repository to use discontinued packages
but adding a newer repository is only for joyriders...
Hahaha
I'm going to get something to eat. See you later! :D
enjoy!
