What's odd is why they would expect it to work

Seems like they're new to computers and don't understand the difference in OS's well. They might have googled "How to open files from command line"

@Zanna Because they probably are Windows users and WSL is their first interaction with anything Linux-related. So they don't know or don't exactly understand the limitations of WSL. They search for various how-to's, but they don't really know which of them are only applicable in a full Linux installation (be it on bare metal or VM) and which also work on WSL.

I remember I had set it as the default terminal for WSL, but not much details. It's been 2 or 3 years since I last used it.

WSL by default uses CMD as its front-end AFAIK.
