OT Python programming

7:56 AM
@karel That's not off-topic. The issue is that python on Ubuntu is (still nearly always, and pretty well verifiably in the OP's case) a Python 2 interpreter rather than a Python 3 interpreter, but the OP is attempting to run Python 3 code. I've commented and voted to close it as a duplicate of a previous question about that situation.
One might argue that it should be kept open so that it can get answers about how to use VS Code to change which Python interpreter is used, and to know which one is used. But they're running python manually to run the script, so that might be more misleading than useful.
Whether or not it is to be closed as a duplicate--and I think it should be--it's not actually off-topic because its a tooling question, and also because and it's about something that occurs on Ubuntu but not on numerous other OSes (including some other GNU/Linux OSes).

8:17 AM
Unfortunately it was closed as off-topic.
I have voted to reopen.

@EliahKagan I didn't get around to attending to that other question, and it has recently been closed as off-topic. I've commented and voted to reopen it. It might be unclear or a duplicate of something. It's not plausibly off-topic, however, due to a combination of reasons in my comment.

I also voted

8:48 AM
Was that OT?
^^ deleted because of getting posted on multiple questions.

@Kulfy That doesn't look off-topic. I wish it gave a clearer example. It probably doesn't qualify as unclear either though. I've added the tag and voted to reopen it. The answer is a Python program, but it doesn't ask specifically for that.
It has two delete votes. I am guessing it will be deleted rather than reopened. The deletion won't be correct, and I'll vote to undelete it if I see it deleted, but in spite of questions about small, tractable text processing tasks generally being on-topic and it having a valuable answer, I don't expect it to survive.

@EliahKagan I have also voted.

@EliahKagan doesn't that error only occur when trying to do a release-upgrade?

1 hour later…
1:31 PM
@user3140225 the answers on the target are not very satisfying
(I agree it's the same problem though)

@Natty fp
@Natty fp
@Zanna I don't know.
If so, then the OP may be able to fix the problem by upgrading and/or reinstalling the apt package first (and they should upgrade all their packages from official repositories to the latest versions in 14.04 LTS before attempting to use do-release-upgrade to move to 16.04 LTS anyway).

2:46 PM
@EliahKagan I mean, otherwise, is it clear they are trying to do a release upgrade? I am not disagreeing with you about the question being on topic, but if there is some evidence that it's on topic that is unlikely to be disputed, then I can vote to reopen it
I have definitely seen that particular error in situations where the person is trying to do a release upgrade
but I don't know if it might occur elsewhere

(unrelated) Since I already "successfully" voted to close that Python question as a duplicate, which helped it get closed wrongly as off-topic (and then it was reopened), the system won't let me vote to close it again. Though it could get an answer that explains the error. Anyway I've finished the retagging job that should've done completely before.
(The tag doesn't fit it, and since it comes down mostly to what the python command does, which the OP is running from a terminal, [tag:command-line does.)
@Zanna I don't know why it couldn't. I generally expect people to attempt to upgrade all their official packages before running do-release-upgrade, though I guess some people don't.
I don't suggest hammering it open with a mod reopen vote while the only reopen vote on it is mine.

@EliahKagan yeah, I saw that tag and thought "what?" but since you had edited it I gave it the benefit of my doubt
sorry

Yeah, leaving that tag that was just a big oversight on my part.
There is a compilation step in interpreting Python, and the design of the language nearly ensures that any implementation will have such a step (because although it is dynamically typed, it is lexically, i.e., statically scoped), but that has nothing to do with my leaving the tag on it, and I only mentioned it in my recent edit summary in case the OP or others wonder if the tag was appropriate or assume from its removal that anything they see about compilation in wrong in that context.

@EliahKagan doesn't do-release-upgrade do that, or prompt you to do that?

It does now.
It prompts now, I mean.
Actually maybe it just does it.

2:53 PM
I got it

When I upgraded my 19.10 system, it couldn't do it and it prompted, but maybe it does it when it can.
I don't know how it behaved back then, though.
@Zanna Do you mean you reproduced that error message? Or that do-release-upgrade did that or prompted? Or something else?

no I meant that I understood what you meant

Ah.

but, I think do-release-upgrade prompted me to update last time I ran it
I knew you would not be able to vote to close that question again but reopening it seemed better than it being unreasonably closed as off-topic
probably someone will help out with that
anyway I will go and clean the floor, which is unlikely to raise any objections

@Zanna I don't disagree with that

I wonder if there are any better ones around somewhere

dupe not OT

this question is closed as opinion-based, which is not wrong, but which makes it hard to update. Can it be edited and reopened so people can post better answers? Or is it a dupe of something?

@Zanna I edited it, mainly the title, as also suggested in a comment. I also voted to reopen.
@Zanna Perhaps this is a better target for this
Also this is probably a dupe with the same target
Unrelated, is there any way to see my stats for the Close Votes in percentages, that is the percentage of questions I vote to leave open or close? It would be interesting for the other review queues too.

6:55 PM
@user3140225 Mods may have those insight.

@user3140225 I think that edit is sufficient to make it no longer opinion-based and I've voted to reopen it as well.

@user3140225 I can tell you that, for the last 30 days

@EliahKagan Thanks

@user3140225 thanks, that is excellent!

@Zanna Could you please tell me, if it's not much trouble?

7:05 PM
@Kulfy Yeah, there's a (not good at all) possible argument that it's too broad, but it's definitely not opinion-based. My review knocked it from the queue but it has four close votes, we'll see what happens.

Sure, just a minute...

dupe -- a rare situation where it actually makes sense to vote to close a question as a duplicate of that very general one -- or unclear

@EliahKagan I think comments almost answers the question.

@user3140225 you voted to close 131 questions, and voted to leave open 85, or 61% close vs. 39% leave open

@Natty fp
@Natty tp

7:12 PM
@Zanna Thank you. That is close to the percentage I thought it would be.

@user3140225 could be, yes... at least it can be added, good find...
@user3140225 Any time :)

@Zanna Yes.
@Natty tp
@Kulfy Why do you think that answer should be deleted?

@Natty tp

@EliahKagan It seemed like the other existing answers.

I rarely use Byobu, but I don't think F6 and Alt+F6 do the same thing.

I'm not sure about that.

Well, doesn't F6 detach the current session, and Alt+F6 detach others?

7:33 PM
I don't use Byobu. So, I'm not sure.
[unrelated] This seems weird. Maybe answerer had inbuilt mic in the headphones and they didn't realise.

@Kulfy The explanation in both the F6 answers there and the new Alt+F6 one, as well as this post and that one (both by Dustin Kirkland) seem to indicate that.
@Kulfy That seems likely... but there's also a lot of weird audio stuff that happens so maybe there are other explanations. :)
Or maybe it's not actually weird and it only seems weird to me because I don't know about it.
@EliahKagan Maybe the new answer should be expanded to cover this. But I'd want to be sure I'm not adding wrong or misleading information that I only think is right and helpful.

@EliahKagan OK that was my ignorance. Thanks for the ping :)

Well I'm not sure 100% sure. I rarely use Byobu. I use screen directly, and occasionally tmux directly, more often.

@EliahKagan I clicked on "No action needed" in FP.

@EliahKagan The new answer appears to have entered the LQP queue in connection with the idea that old question with accepted answers shouldn't receive new answers. (There had been a comment on it to that effect. Though maybe it was automatically enqueued, or enqueued for some other reason, and the comment was just coincidence.)

7:47 PM
I edited this question to add the requested output from the comments, so this comment and this comment are no longer needed.

Why would someone get a prompt for upgrading to bionic from eoan even when xenial's repositories are disabled?
Do we have something for that?

@Kulfy How does this look?

@user3140225 That question is about rolling back to a previous release but in the question I mentioned, the upgrade tool was trying to upgrade from eoan to bionic, which ofcourse isn't supported. I assume OP don't know about the codenames.

not a dupe This question was closed as a duplicate of another question that it isn't a duplicate of according to the questions title, probably because the description of the problem wasn't sufficiently clear. The linked duplicate question is specific to the grub boot menu. The computer in this question has 2 different boot menus, one of which has grub as one of its boot entries, as the question's title "Duplicate grub 2 on boot menu" ambiguously suggests.

8:07 PM
@Kulfy Maybe we should close it as unclear?

@user3140225 Doesn't sound fair. I'm not sure what to do with that question.
@EliahKagan This question can serve as the second dupe target first being the linked question in your comment. The latter one explains the behaviour and the earlier one explains the steps to change python version in VS Code.
So, dupe.
Related to above, I have voted to reopen the target since it's about the unexpected behaviour of an IDE on Ubuntu.

@Kulfy The thing is that the OP has repositories for xenial (disabled) and eoan (enabled) and thinks that they have 18.04 ("When I try to update my ubuntu 18.04 I got below error"), while they clearly have 19.10 as shown by lsb_release -a. I think that it is not clear if they truly want to downgrade to 18.04 or upgrade to the latest version (19.10) because they don't know that this is the version they have.

8:31 PM
@Kulfy That question should never have been closed. I've commented and voted to reopen it. I'm inclined to say that people should just not review close votes on questions about topics they're entirely unfamiliar with, since obviously the problem there is that Python 2 is being used where Python 3 was expected.
But I might be wrong to assume that reviewers who close such questions don't know about Python. There are a lot of dynamics that can lead to wrong closure, and on Ask Ubuntu we seem to have them all.
@karel Thanks, I was wrong to vote to close that and I've voted to reopen it. It needs two more reopen votes.

8:51 PM
It has been reopened now.

9:18 PM
@user3140225 Yeah while you're right, I'm amazed by that screenshot in the question.
@EliahKagan Some people may argue that since OP unknowingly ran the code with Python 2 instead of Python 3, it's not about Ubuntu which I think is simply unfair.

@Kulfy It's because the OP unknowingly ran the code with Python 2 instead of Python 3 that it is about Ubuntu.
Like, if the OP knew they were using Python 2, that's when one could argue that the question is about how to write Python code properly and thus off-topic.

9:50 PM
@Kulfy Yeah, I don't know how they managed to get it!
