@karel That's not off-topic. The issue is that python on Ubuntu is (still nearly always, and pretty well verifiably in the OP's case) a Python 2 interpreter rather than a Python 3 interpreter, but the OP is attempting to run Python 3 code. I've commented and voted to close it as a duplicate of a previous question about that situation.

One might argue that it should be kept open so that it can get answers about how to use VS Code to change which Python interpreter is used, and to know which one is used. But they're running python manually to run the script, so that might be more misleading than useful.

Whether or not it is to be closed as a duplicate--and I think it should be--it's not actually off-topic because its a tooling question, and also because and it's about something that occurs on Ubuntu but not on numerous other OSes (including some other GNU/Linux OSes).

@Kulfy That doesn't look off-topic. I wish it gave a clearer example. It probably doesn't qualify as unclear either though. I've added the text-processing tag and voted to reopen it. The answer is a Python program, but it doesn't ask specifically for that.

It has two delete votes. I am guessing it will be deleted rather than reopened. The deletion won't be correct, and I'll vote to undelete it if I see it deleted, but in spite of questions about small, tractable text processing tasks generally being on-topic and it having a valuable answer, I don't expect it to survive.

If so, then the OP may be able to fix the problem by upgrading and/or reinstalling the apt package first (and they should upgrade all their packages from official repositories to the latest versions in 14.04 LTS before attempting to use do-release-upgrade to move to 16.04 LTS anyway).

(unrelated) Since I already "successfully" voted to close that Python question as a duplicate, which helped it get closed wrongly as off-topic (and then it was reopened), the system won't let me vote to close it again. Though it could get an answer that explains the error. Anyway I've finished the retagging job that should've done completely before.

(The compiling tag doesn't fit it, and since it comes down mostly to what the python command does, which the OP is running from a terminal, [tag:command-line does.)

@Zanna I don't know why it couldn't. I generally expect people to attempt to upgrade all their official packages before running do-release-upgrade, though I guess some people don't.

Yeah, leaving that tag that was just a big oversight on my part.

There is a compilation step in interpreting Python, and the design of the language nearly ensures that any implementation will have such a step (because although it is dynamically typed, it is lexically, i.e., statically scoped), but that has nothing to do with my leaving the tag on it, and I only mentioned it in my recent edit summary in case the OP or others wonder if the tag was appropriate or assume from its removal that anything they see about compilation in wrong in that context.

Well I'm not sure 100% sure. I rarely use Byobu. I use screen directly, and occasionally tmux directly, more often.

Why would someone get a prompt for upgrading to bionic from eoan even when xenial's repositories are disabled?

@user3140225 That question is about rolling back to a previous release but in the question I mentioned, the upgrade tool was trying to upgrade from eoan to bionic, which ofcourse isn't supported. I assume OP don't know about the codenames.

The linked duplicate question is specific to the grub boot menu. The computer in this question has 2 different boot menus, one of which has grub as one of its boot entries, as the question's title "Duplicate grub 2 on boot menu" ambiguously suggests.

Related to above, I have voted to reopen the target since it's about the unexpected behaviour of an IDE on Ubuntu.

@Kulfy The thing is that the OP has repositories for xenial (disabled) and eoan (enabled) and thinks that they have 18.04 ("When I try to update my ubuntu 18.04 I got below error"), while they clearly have 19.10 as shown by lsb_release -a. I think that it is not clear if they truly want to downgrade to 18.04 or upgrade to the latest version (19.10) because they don't know that this is the version they have.

@Kulfy That question should never have been closed. I've commented and voted to reopen it. I'm inclined to say that people should just not review close votes on questions about topics they're entirely unfamiliar with, since obviously the problem there is that Python 2 is being used where Python 3 was expected.

But I might be wrong to assume that reviewers who close such questions don't know about Python. There are a lot of dynamics that can lead to wrong closure, and on Ask Ubuntu we seem to have them all.
