^^ The ambiguities of what ought to be considered a shell script or a Python script can simply be addressed in an answer, and a reasonable solution can consist of a single find command or (easier) a single find command piped to grep. The existing answer is also reasonable (though it takes a long time to run because it processes files not marked executable) and shows the question is clear enough to answer.

My close vote wasn't unclear. It was a problem that was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers.

I don't agree with that either. The question is almost the opposite of no-repro--it's likely to turn out only to be relevant to a broad audience of people other than the OP.
Besides not having anything in it that suggests it was only temporarily relevant, we don't know how much it will end up helping the OP, because wanting to count both Bash and Python scripts and nothing else is very strange, and likely it's an XY problem. But the actual techniques for doing it are almost the same as, and therefore directly illustrate, how to find and count scripts that appear to be in one specific language (which is a useful thing to do).
It's also similar to finding and counting scripts in a much larger handful of languages that consists of more than two (like all the languages find knows about). That's less useful than finding and counting scripts in a single language, but still useful.
It's strange to want to do this across the whole system, but finding and counting scripts in a particular language in a directory tree of significant size is something that I have personally had occasion to do, and I don't think I'm the only one.

duplicate Although OP doesn't find the solution optimal, I can confirm it works fine.
Also it has another solution which should work fine too.

Good point, VTC'd.
I'll try to check back in case the OP edits or comments explaining why they don't find either of those solutions adequate (if they don't--from the OP's existing comment, I'm not sure they actually disapprove or not of making it a duplicate).

Seems off-topic, sounds like an issue with OP's Bodhi installation, not an Ubuntu problem per se.

not unclear, see comments - Most of the question can be moved into its own answer after reopening, if its current format is considered a problem.

@Natty tp
The feedback given to Smokey in Charcoal HQ seems to be that it's not spam. I'm retracting my spam flag and flagging VLQ or NAA (and voting to delete).
not unclear (see answer), maybe it could be considered a dupe of something general though

This question has been edited and is clear enough to reopen.

I think this meta question should be undeleted again. It was redeleted automatically by the system because it's negatively scored and unanswered--same as before. Fortunately, in this particular situation, the system allows someone who successfully voted to undelete it before to do so again.
At some point maybe I'll get around to posting an answer, especially if nobody else does, but either way, this is a corner case the system doesn't address adequately: a policy proposal that is widely disagreed with and downvoted (I assume) mostly for that reason, where both the meta question itself and its votes have value, but where no answer has been posted yet so the system identifies it as a dead question.
This makes sense on the main site--well, it does no worse than manual deletion by humans anyway--but on meta it falls into these kinds of traps.

@EliahKagan Is there a particular reason that python is so frequently used on Ubuntu? Is it more supported than say C++?

10:56 AM
@ITGremlin They're both very well supported. Python is a popular language in general, not just in Ubuntu. However, it may be especially popular among Ubuntu users. I am not sure. Also, quite a bit of Ubuntu software--including software that was created specifically for Ubuntu--is written in Python. But there's software created specifically for Ubuntu written in other languages including C++ and Go as well.
Long-standing Ubuntu-specific programs written in Python include Ubiquity (Ubuntu's graphical installer), Update Manager/Software Updater, Software Properties/Software Sources, and USC.
One of Python's popular uses--not specific to Ubuntu--is as a scripting language for system administration, even at the small scale. And it is especially popular in devops and site reliability engineering. Perl is still used, but Python is increasingly used where Perl would have been in the past.
It used to be that when one wanted to do something for which one would ordinarily use a shell script but where it was too complicated for that to seem like a good idea, one would use Perl. Now it's more often Python.
These are imperfect generalizations, of course.

@EliahKagan Thanks. Apples to apples, if C++ and Python were doing the same tasks, which is better on Ubuntu in your opinion and in what use cases?
I made an edit of this askubuntu.com/a/1075168/873780 how does the peer review work? Will it rely on people finding that question and answer or does it get flagged in some system somewhere?

@ITGremlin I followed your link and clicked on "edit" to view your suggested edit. I don't think the suggested edit should be step 9. in the numbered list. I think it should be a separate paragraph at the end of the numbered list instead, so I didn't review it. btw if nobody reviewed it yet you can still re-edit it

I voted to reopen this question. It's really not a duplicate of the question that it's closed as a duplicate of, and it wouldn't be constructive to merge this question. This is a good question which I upvoted and bookmarked, and it deserves to be reopened.

I don't think it's OT. It would be better if the answer is expanded.

I agree.

I think this question is a duplicate of this one if we consider only the last part. However, no matter which close reason I use, it'll still be closed as OT. If it's closed as OT, is it OK to reopen and close as duplicate?
