The existing answer is also reasonable (though it takes a long time to run because it processes files not marked executable) and shows the question is clear enough to answer.

My close vote wasn't unclear. It was a problem that was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers.

I don't agree with that either. The question is almost the opposite of no-repro--it's likely to turn out only to be relevant to a broad audience of people other than the OP.

Besides not having anything in it that suggests it was only temporarily relevant, we don't know how much it will end up helping the OP, because wanting to count both Bash and Python scripts and nothing else is very strange, and likely it's an XY problem. But the actual techniques for doing it are almost the same as, and therefore directly illustrate, how to find and count scripts that appear to be in one specific language (which is a useful thing to do).

It's also similar to finding and counting scripts in a much larger handful of languages that consists of more than two (like all the languages find knows about). That's less useful than finding and counting scripts in a single language, but still useful.

It's strange to want to do this across the whole system, but finding and counting scripts in a particular language in a directory tree of significant size is something that I have personally had occasion to do, and I don't think I'm the only one.

I think this meta question should be undeleted again. It was redeleted automatically by the system because it's negatively scored and unanswered--same as before. Fortunately, in this particular situation, the system allows someone who successfully voted to undelete it before to do so again.

At some point maybe I'll get around to posting an answer, especially if nobody else does, but either way, this is a corner case the system doesn't address adequately: a policy proposal that is widely disagreed with and downvoted (I assume) mostly for that reason, where both the meta question itself and its votes have value, but where no answer has been posted yet so the system identifies it as a dead question.

This makes sense on the main site--well, it does no worse than manual deletion by humans anyway--but on meta it falls into these kinds of traps.

@ITGremlin They're both very well supported. Python is a popular language in general, not just in Ubuntu. However, it may be especially popular among Ubuntu users. I am not sure. Also, quite a bit of Ubuntu software--including software that was created specifically for Ubuntu--is written in Python. But there's software created specifically for Ubuntu written in other languages including C++ and Go as well.

Long-standing Ubuntu-specific programs written in Python include Ubiquity (Ubuntu's graphical installer), Update Manager/Software Updater, Software Properties/Software Sources, and USC.

One of Python's popular uses--not specific to Ubuntu--is as a scripting language for system administration, even at the small scale. And it is especially popular in devops and site reliability engineering. Perl is still used, but Python is increasingly used where Perl would have been in the past.

It used to be that when one wanted to do something for which one would ordinarily use a shell script but where it was too complicated for that to seem like a good idea, one would use Perl. Now it's more often Python.

These are imperfect generalizations, of course.
