@Natty fp
clearly conflicts with author's intent (or attempt to reply) - the editor should post a new answer instead
no improvement - I rejected with the custom message:
> The script can just be run as root with sudo. Also, this is quoted code; if changed, it should be made clear it diverges from the quoted original.
^^ Both those still need at least one more review.

dupe, based on the 'edit' at end of the question
also OP's self-answer is the same as the top answer posted to the target

The comments on this answer are no longer needed.
The comments on this question are also no longer needed.
no longer needed - the commenter (who was the OP) was aware of the possibility of posting a new question, and their comment is a request for clarification on the answer anyway (so commenting was really the most appropriate course)

@Natty tp
no longer needed - it was a good suggestion, but at this point it's just noise (and the OP marked it as the accepted answer)

^^ I think that's definitely spam. Its purpose is to advertise the site it links to, and that link is also given on the author's AU profile.

@EliahKagan You're right. It's no longer needed, so I deleted it.

Thanks.
I actually only noticed that it was your comment after I posted the chat message, and I figured it wasn't urgent or important enough to ping you (since you'd likely see it eventually anyway).

Is this question still a duplicate, or should it be retitled (something like "How can I fix "E: Malformed line" in sources.list when I don't have gedit and can't install it?") and reopened? The alternative to reopening it, I suppose, would be for me to add something about other editors to that answer of mine, which perhaps I should do anyway regardless of whether or not the question is reopened.
I'm not sure if the question should be reopened or not. I've commented.

Is it answerable?
@EliahKagan The latter one makes more sense. I would prefer removing gedit and using some CLI based editor such as nano or even sudoedit.

2:32 PM
@Kulfy Something like that would probably have been better originally but I'm reluctant to change something unnecessary that may have been a significant part of why some of the ~50 upvoters voted the post up. But clearly it's a flaw in the post that it doesn't work on systems without Gedit, which includes most server setups and most Ubuntu flavors that aren't GNOME-based. I've edited the post to add a prominent sudoedit alternative. I think it might still benefit from further edits.
@Kulfy I'm not sure. I'm inclined to wait, and to take the quality and character of the ensuing comments and answers into account. It's a hard-to-answer question that has a major subjective element but is fundamentally about a matter of subjective facts: it's asking, are more people having that specific "malformed line" problem and, if so, why. It might end up getting closed as POB, and if it does, that might be a correct closure (I'm not sure), but I haven't voted to close it.
If it does end up being closed, it seems to me that it should probably be closed as POB or, if the problem with it is that it doesn't provide enough concrete observations to support its premise, then unclear.
I think it's probably on-topic, because the Ubuntu community is on-topic for Ask Ubuntu, so it should probably not be closed as off-topic, unless the OP specifically wants to ask about why the problem is being reported on Ask Ubuntu and what we should do about it here, in which case it could be closed as off-topic and migrated to meta.
@Kulfy Thanks for catching my careless typo and fixing it in your recent edit! (I should've read over my own edit more carefully before submitting it.)
@EliahKagan * fundamentally about a matter of objective facts
So, a backslash-escaped * in chat can be italicized with surrounding stars, or bolded, but if it is bolded and italicized, then it gets confused with subsequent italicized text. Weird.
@EliahKagan I've commented.

3:23 PM
@EliahKagan Yeah. Improvements should never stop. I suggested using sudoedit instead some other CLI based editor such as vi because some people find using Vim hard.
@EliahKagan I don't think it's on-topic for Meta. Like it ain't asking about the site or its functionality specifically. Its about the people who are using Ubuntu. I don't think its answerable as well on main. It needs something like, you can say, survey.
@EliahKagan Welcome :)
By the way I feel "how to save the file" should also be added. Like pressing Ctrl+X and then Y (since in most cases sudoedit invokes nano).

3:42 PM
@Kulfy Do you know if, in practice, users tend to have difficulty knowing how to save in nano? There's a help at the bottom of the screen in nano, but OTOH some users might not know that ^_ (for some key _) means to press _ while holding down Ctrl. Also, people might not know that "Write Out" means to save and might not realize that they will be given the option to save when exiting with unsaved changes.
If these are common problems, then information about how to save should probably be added... but in that case, I should probably show a command that specifically runs nano instead of sudoedit with the default editor, so that readers don't become confused by the nano-specific instructions if their editor isn't nano.

4:14 PM
@EliahKagan People who face such issue are generally newbies. And newbies generally have difficulties in getting instructions for a CLI based editor. I think.
@EliahKagan Yeah that makes sense. But now I feel let the post be as it is.
