Doesn't looks like a solution!!

lol
Windows ini file
probably on an NTFS partition?

@Zanna probably yes. desktop.ini is a Windows thing. I left a comment on the post.

seem answerable?
not something we should close?

looks unclear to me.

I left a comment
I think it's an XY problem
just a suspicion though. Not sure about closing but if OP is happy with their "solution" I think we're unlikely to get more info

9:13 AM
No I don't think it's an XY problem although looks kinda weird with '?' in file permissions, user and group. It seems that OP is unable to perform even cat operation on that.

seen those ? before
I mean, I think they should tell us why they want to edit this file from Ubuntu

No. Not since I'm using linux (3 years I guess). OP says that they aren't able to perform any operation. They can't even copy that file. I'm voting question as unclear.

oh I meant I have see them before
it means the parent directory has no execute permission

@Zanna Oh I see. I interpreted that wrongly because of '?'. But if parent directory has no execute permission then I think you can't even cd into that directory. (I'm not very good in command line)

zanna@toaster:~$ cd playground
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ mkdir mystery
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ touch mystery/file
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ chmod 444 mystery
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ ls -l mystery
ls: cannot access 'mystery/file': Permission denied
total 0
-????????? ? ? ? ? ? file
@Kulfy you can't cd into it, correct
we get the "?"s when we have read permission but no execute permission
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ chmod 000 mystery
zanna@toaster:~/playground$ ls -l mystery
ls: cannot open directory 'mystery': Permission denied
@Kulfy yes, sorry for my unclear message!

9:23 AM
@Zanna I just mounted my ntfs partition in read only mode to check '?' permissions. Got
-????????? ? ? ? ? ? explorer.exe

I should try to actually use subject pronouns, since English doesn't have enough grammar for things to make sense without them
@Kulfy yep, I'd expect that
the reason I think it's an XY problem is that I think their goal in editing that file is the real issue. There may be a better way to do it, or they should just being doing whatever it is from Windows
but I'm sure we already have questions explaining those question marks...

@Zanna I'm not very good with grammar. If it's good to hear then grammar must be ok. lol ;-)

haha yes that's the best test. Does it sound right? Probably right then :)

@Zanna I'll say copying is the ultimate goal.

but the use of grammar is to make it possible for people to understand what each other are trying to say. So it is a very good thing IMHO :)
@Kulfy ok. I haven't read the question very thoroughly! Too much work to do!

maybe you can post an answer if we don't have an appropriate dupe target
@Kulfy nice. That could be linked to in an answer...

@Zanna I'll rather try to ask OP the permissions of the partition to check if it is mounted RO mode or not to make question more clear.

but if they don't reply, an answer could perhaps explain what to do in either case

@Zanna Actually as I've said I'm not very good in command line. I'll try to dig up more and create a well explained answer. I've already voted as unclear. But you can vote it as duplicate of this question

It could be a dupe of that question as written, but I prefer them to say what their goal is
also, that question is pretty generic and like you say we don't know if there are mount issues here
sorry @Kulfy. I am giving everything less attention than it deserves. I should either give 0 attention or full attention, because half-assed attention just causes problems.
I need to be more disciplined in this

9:45 AM
Nice comment ;-) I can just wait for the OP to reply. Until then it's either duplicate or unclear.
@Zanna indeed but nevermind. :)

:)

Looks more like an incomplete solution to some question

I've left a comment

You can add this blog post of Jeff in your comment if you want to.

oh I would link to the help center page Can I answer my own question? rather than a blog. But I think two links is enough when I'm hassling them to do two things already

1:45 PM
Help center page looks fine. AFAIK there must exist a question dealing with Ralink driver. I think OP should post his answer there. I'll try to find that question and leave the link in comment section.

@Kulfy oh, that's a really good idea

1:58 PM
@Zanna I got two similar open questions but they are protected by Community and others are marked as duplicate. Strange situation.

unprotect can be done

I know but community may raise questions. Neither I have such privilege as of now.
OP edited his question and made it more like an answer. I think it's not clear to OP.
Here is the question:askubuntu.com/questions/674116 for which it can serve as an answer IMO.

I can unprotect it temporarily while they post there

Should I leave a comment then? Actually I really liked the answer. It is specific to a kernel and somewhat different from Pilot6's answer.

2:16 PM
yeah, it seems worth keeping
I am not sure what would be easier
I feel bad bothering this person to change their post
Is it really a duplicate?
yeah it's the same device

Question looks like a duplicate but not the answer. Right now I'm writing a comment and let the OP decide.

thanks :)
I unprotected the question
I may forget to protect it again later...

I'll remind you ;-)

thanks!
going to cook

Posted comment.

2:51 PM
NAA at least to that question.

3:05 PM
@Kulfy great comment

3:38 PM
they posted an answer so we can upvote now

3:58 PM
And you can protect the question again. :)

done, thanks a lot for all your help on that :D

Consider it a small contribution from my side :)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at end of answer (60): Brother HL-1202 prints blank pages by wo pe on askubuntu.com

dupe, reposted by OP... for the zillionth time! : \

haha repeat offended spotted

@Zanna It seems they've deleted their question. Now you can take your comment down from the answer

hah I saw that just before you pinged and deleted my comment just before reading your message
we are on the same page :)
hope they will get upvotes for their answer there

@pomsky I meant the same behaviour by this user more that once even after being asked not to do so, not that this particular question is reposted by them many times

7:34 PM
yep

zanna you have a moment in a private room, want to ask you something

I saw using your query on SEDE, Pilot6's answer got many downvotes. May this answer works for newer kernels.

hmm yeah
@Videonauth sure...
@Kulfy that would be great
maybe protecting that question should be reconsidered
the deleted answers that triggered the protection include complaints about the answer not working

But that may invite spam answers. Still can't say.
@Zanna I can't see them as of now :(

7:44 PM
there are no spam answers so far, just "me too" "thanks!" and "this didn't work, I have this error..." type posts

IMO it should remain protected. AFAIK very few people bother to post such kinda solutions to relatively older posts. Also, if answer didn't work they can always ask a new question. This case was different, I think.
@Zanna If you are free can you please look to the answer that I posted on meta some days back. I thought you were busy in grading the answers of your students so I should ask you later but I somehow forgot.

Also PRATAP's answer posted to the question is very detailed, so voting to close an older question as a duplicate

@Kulfy well the views on the question and the new post today suggest the issue is still relevant. Protection is useful when the question has been comprehensively answered and there is very little chance of anything new being added. Here I'm not sure that applies
@Kulfy my mum is calling me haha
back in some while, maybe an hour

No problem. I'll try to be remain awake to get reviews. It's already 1:30 here and I'm still not sleepy ;-)

8:00 PM
ooh noooo don't lose sleep
we can discuss any time

I already have mentioned I'm not sleepy yet. ;)

9:33 PM
@Kulfy I actually saw your answer yesterday or the day before when I read all the new meta questions and I had a little trouble following your answer and I am still having trouble now. But I think this is my fault and not the answer's fault
I am unsure about what is actually being asked. Are they asking whether old questions should be closed against new ones?
It seems that is what is being asked
I am going to comment on the question, because I do not think the title describes this

9:49 PM
Now I feel bad that I didn't attend to this question earlier
for some reason I'm unwilling to cast a delete vote
I feel that people should be able to express their dissatisfaction with us somewhere

@Zanna why it is not an answe, sure he is frustrated. but hew would have been beter off voicing his frustration on meta
gah Im stupid
this is already on meta
true delete voets are not waranted there
