@karel The problem is that "Does specific hardware X work?" is not a question asking for hardware to be recommended. They know what hardware they are interested in, and they are asking about that hardware in particular. If we close those as hardware recommendations, people will start closing "How do I get specific wireless card X to work?" as hardware recommendations.

When someone asks if specific hardware works and they are asking about a specific combination of hardware ("Does computer X work?") consisting of multiple parts that all would have to be considered, then I think we could close it as too broad, or sometimes as unclear if even a very broad answer couldn't cover it, or often as a duplicate if something appropriate exists for it.

(I am also generally inclined to close questions that are actually asking for hardware recommendations as too broad, since that's the fundamental reason we don't allow hardware recommendations, but I think off-topic is acceptable for that: I would never try to reopen an actual hardware recommendation question that was closed as off-topic in order to re-close it as too broad.)

To clarify, when someone asks, "I am considering buying Computer A, but it has wireless card X -- can wireless card X be used on Ubuntu?" that should not be closed as a hardware recommendation. But I have seen those questions closed as hardware recommendations, even though it's a less broad version of "How do I use wireless card X?" That's one of the things I'm trying to avoid.

@karel Even if she hadn't edited her answer with that information, I don't think it would really have violated any SE policies, since the OP was already specifically asking about the software that she was talking about. (She was thus not actually sending people to a site, or suggesting they use a product, that she was affiliated with... that they were not already using.) Either way, her answer is better with the disclosure. We can flag the comment that requested it as no longer needed.

It seems like 50% of the when I mercifully post a specific duplicate question on a hardware recommendation question I have to eat shit from the ungrateful OP who wants 1st class service on his hw question anywhere but on Hardwhere Recommendations Q&A, so I'm not going to do that anymore. That leaves either too broad, off topic, or muru's generic question Will my device work with Ubuntu? as alternatives.

Allowing for the elimination of off topic leaves us with muru's duplicate question which some OPs will hate for being 2nd class service not specific to their device or too broad which some OPs will also hate in case their question is about only one laptop model which they haven't purchased yet.
