Is this answer NAA? It feels like it's trying to answer a different question, yet at the same time, it seems like there may be value in keeping it, for the comment critiquing it.

not sure
its technically NAA
it does attempt to adress the question but not answers it

It doesn't attempt to answer it?
Because it seems to me the reason it might be NAA is that it attempts to answer a different question, not that it doesn't quite attempt to answer any question.
Saying to add a line to the top of a the executable seems like an answer.
I'm just not sure what question they are trying to answer.

This question I will be glad to put a delete vote on tomorrow.

5:09 AM
@Zanna I duped this question: askubuntu.com/questions/731854/… to something as you requested in your previous comment.

Can this question actually be answered based on what it says so far? If not, we should close it as unclear. OTOH maybe a general answer about shell scripting errors in which = shows up unexpectedly could be posted?
@Zanna Probably somebody should post a third answer addressing what's going wrong in the code the OP showed, then.

@EliahKagan I wouldn't close vote it as unclear because the error message in the question is reproducible so maybe it can be answered.

5:27 AM
@karel Okay. That makes sense. Do you want to post an answer? Should I suggest Sergiy Kolodyazhnyy make a general answer based on his comment? Both?

Is this deleted question really unclear?
@karel thanks!

@Zanna What caused the Community bot to delete that?

User was deleted, so their negatively scored posts were automatically deleted... let me look for a reference

@Zanna however its undeleted now
maybe flag the comments there which are no longer needed?

@Zanna That happens even when they have answers with positive score?

5:33 AM
I think it has to do with being closed, and user got deleted

The post was not closed at the time it was deleted.

Q: Community User deleted a question I answered

chris85The Community user deleted a question I had an accepted answer on. If it was a low quality post, I would have expected a close reason and then the delete votes. That didn't happen here, though. Why was this question deleted? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/41333635/remove-html-tag-from-stri...

It was definitely deleted with the user account -- askubuntu.com/posts/894078/timeline -- but I really don't think the SE system should do that when there are upvoted answers.

It does seem like a suboptimal design choice!
Thanks for undeleting! :)
Battery dying, back later!

maybe cleaning up the comments would not be bad too, if someone only ready untill sergiys comment he might VTC again and so the train goes on

5:48 AM
Is this maybe a dupe of one of the two i mentioned in my comments? askubuntu.com/q/977617/522934

@EliahKagan I would prefer if Sergiy Kolodyazhnyy answered it because it's his idea.

6:21 AM
@karel Okay. I've commented to suggest that.

6:41 AM
@EliahKagan yes! Hmm maybe I should try to work on that...
@Videonauth great, thanks so much for checking!

@Zanna Perhaps so! :) :)
Oh crap, with inadequate attention I upvoted that entirely wrong comment and I cannot remove my vote.
I've commented on the answer though:
This answer is wrong. = in [[ or [/test does not perform assignment. Try it! — Eliah Kagan 1 min ago
$ x=foo
$ echo "$x"
foo
$ if [[ $x = foo ]]; then echo 'got foo'; fi
got foo
$ if [[ $x = bar ]]; then echo 'got bar'; fi
$ echo "$x"

Even though I know the Community user was really just following its programming, I'd like to think that it gradually developed consciousness, saw that, and also the two other answers that are basically okay but use read without -r, and decided that the whole page just needed to be swept away. :)

@karel hi

@George Hello. The history of "are custom kernels of topic" that I referred to is that pilot6 closed voted a large number of custom kernel questions for being off topic. Many reviewers including me thought that pilot6 knew what he was doing and close voted along with him until the matter came to the attention of hexafraction who asked the Meta question.

hi @karel
@karel I was of the opinion that such kernel is particular to the user and not general Ubuntu user hence it being off topic

18
Q: Do custom kernels constitute off-topicness?

hexafractionOriginally, this question was closed due to a mis-wording, and is now in the process of being reopened. Another user pointed out to me that they believe that a custom kernel makes a post off-topic (while the original post may have been mentioning a proxy configuration, that is beside the point). ...

The community consensus that custom kernels are not off-topic is actually quite strong.

@George After reading the answers to the Meta question I don't automatically close vote custom kernel questions anymore.

Hmm @EliahKagan how would one like myself help such a user, made my own custom kernel

9:38 AM
I don't understand the question. A custom kernel is mostly the same as any other kernel.
@karel If the system hasn't deleted them, we can reopen them, so long as there's no other factor that would justify keeping them closed. Btw I'll move this discussion of site scope and opening/reclosing questions to the Downboat soon. It's one of the things that room is for. This room is so that discussions like this can be seen and thrive there rather than being mixed up in unrelated talk.
Anyone can always feel free to ping me in the Downboat if my attention is elsewhere.

@EliahKagan if Ubuntu won't even talk to one who makes such a kernel what are to say to help somen one who builds something that he/she alone has access to

Next time I'll remember to discuss topics like this one in downboat. I'm moving over to downboat now.

It's not a big problem. Moving messages is easy.

@George Uh... they tell us what they changed? But maybe I don't understand you. Ubuntu is an operating system. As such, it cannot actually be true that "Ubuntu won't even talk to one who makes such a kernel" -- so what do you mean by that? Do you mean that downstream kernel bug reports must be verified to apply with official builds? People often bring that up in discussion of support for custom kernels on Ask Ubuntu and other support sites. But it's not relevant in any obvious way.
Have you read the meta question? I believe it has answers that address this directly.
Also, if you disagree, you may want to vote on the posts there (up or down as you see fit) and also maybe post your own answer making your case, if you don't feel any answer does so already.

9:54 AM
@George Reviewing this matter further I need to make a correction. Pilot6 wasn't an Ask Ubuntu user yet when hexafraction originally asked the Meta question. Someone must have commented and linked the Meta post to a custom kernel question that Pilot6 close voted as off topic and that was what brought the Meta post to my attention.

10:15 AM
I read the meta question @EliahKagan and I see the answer from Mateo which I may quote from "

Building and using a custom kernel will make it very difficult to get support for your system.

While it is a learning experience to compile your own kernel, you will not be allowed to file bugs on the custom-built kernel (if you do, they will be Rejected without further explanation)."

I remember Pilot6 came to chat to talk about it
What I recall starts from here
I asked my own meta question about it

@George Yeah, I've read all the answers on that question. You can see my comment on that one, which fully addresses what Mateo said as well as what you've said here. Like I said, the restriction people bring up is that bug reports aren't accepted. That has nothing to do with whether or not we should allow it on Ask Ubuntu.
I'm not sure if you're trying to express any particular position on this issue right now, and if you are, I'm not sure what that position is. Surely we shouldn't disallow questions because they might be harder than some other questions. Part of what makes Stack Exchange sites work is that enough of the questions are at a level that will interest and challenge users with a lot of knowledge and experience.

10:31 AM
@Zanna thanks for that link I think that clears things up
@EliahKagan I am relative new here and watch more experienced users tackle questions and I have seen a question closed that was asked on how to resolve an issue with a custom kernel build and this was from several experienced users. But that being said I will now make the needed changes to my voting

This question: askubuntu.com/questions/977714/… turned out to be a duplicate of How to remove Ubuntu and put Windows back on? in a comment posted by the OP, not of "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/) is another process using it?" as I originally closed voted and retracted afterwards.
I need at least one duplicate CV that is linked to How to remove Ubuntu and put Windows back on? so it will show up if the question is closed.

I've already cast a close vote there, so I probably can't help, unfortunately.

2:13 PM
@karel I've done that

2:33 PM
Thank you.

:)

2:47 PM
could there be a better solution here? Or is that answer valuable? Or should the question be closed as unclear?
what about this question? It looks like the answer didn't help...
@Videonauth I commented as such on the answer and the author updated it so I upvoted that answer - thanks again!

3:03 PM
Why would someone use cron like this? I think this post can be fixed, I'm just curious

Awwwwwww :(
askubuntu.com/q/977274/522934 i wanted to put a delete vote on it ....
:)

oh, my apologies... I thought you meant you wanted it deleted as quickly as possible!

@Zanna yep, hehehe i was so upset that he called the close as dupe as a cop-out call
this is why i commented with a very long commment
:)
the most people who are answering regularly on this site go mostly great lengths to answer when it can be answered.

3:32 PM
I don't think the author of the question this comment is on is asking how to avoid entering a password

I not flaged or something, just commented. I had begun to write an answer but after that i found it would not be satisfying as an answer so i changed it around and posted a comment instead

well, maybe they will make use of those links...

well who knows, I'm actually thinking on going the opposite way, having in future systems two users, one which belongs in the sudo group and one who doesn't this will then be my user for everyday affairs

4:14 PM
is this maybe a dupe of one of the side linked ones?

1 hour later…
5:15 PM
@Zanna now the comments are cleaned up too on this askubuntu.com/q/894078/522934 :)
gives the question a nice restart

both of the remaining comments look quite dispensable to me haha

then flag them :p

At least the first one, which doesn't identify or link to any such tutorial, is dispensable.

i only flagged those which where looking obsolete to me
which made 7 in total

The second one looks like it's helpful.

5:19 PM
the only ones i wasnt sure about are the ones on LD james answer

5:36 PM
What information can we request here so that a solution might be possible? (It's really unclear rather than necessarily off-topic. That version of Mint doesn't correspond to 14.04 anyway, suggesting they may really be attempting to use both systems.)
Do we have something for this?

@EliahKagan aww it was deleted :(

@EliahKagan oh hmm I doubt it... what could be causing that?

hmm... did they really want to assign /etc/environment to a variable called source?

shrugs

6:38 PM
all 10 answers of him are exactly the same

well it's not spam
seems to be posted in good faith, but are they actually reading those questions? Probably we have innumerable vague questions about dodgy wifi performance... which may or may not be closeable as dupes of each other

my wifi only drops out when my cat uses the router as a heating pad :D

haha

and yes we have countless questions about but i doubt this guy is reading questions at all
problem is it makes the review que a pain atm
and he probably will even gain a few upvotes with doing that

they won't go into our review queues unless they get some low quality flags afaik... the auto flags are mod flags

6:46 PM
@Zanna i had to skip already four of them in late answers

hmm

i wont act on those ones
I normaly enjoy review que, i come to read different answers and so on, but reading the same over and over again well ...

7:01 PM
what's this question really about? The user hasn't been seen since January. I don't know what to do... it seems unclear to me because it seems like they are really asking how to finish sudoedit (confused by the temp filename)

wow i never heard of the command sudoedit but it actually exists

I use it all the time...
