Is this answer NAA? It feels like it's trying to answer a different question, yet at the same time, it seems like there may be value in keeping it, for the comment critiquing it.
Because it seems to me the reason it might be NAA is that it attempts to answer a different question, not that it doesn't quite attempt to answer any question.
Saying to add a line to the top of a the executable seems like an answer.
I'm just not sure what question they are trying to answer.
Can this question actually be answered based on what it says so far? If not, we should close it as unclear. OTOH maybe a general answer about shell scripting errors in which = shows up unexpectedly could be posted?
@Zanna Probably somebody should post a third answer addressing what's going wrong in the code the OP showed, then.
The Community user deleted a question I had an accepted answer on.
If it was a low quality post, I would have expected a close reason and then the delete votes. That didn't happen here, though.

It was definitely deleted with the user account -- askubuntu.com/posts/894078/timeline -- but I really don't think the SE system should do that when there are upvoted answers.

Even though I know the Community user was really just following its programming, I'd like to think that it gradually developed consciousness, saw that, and also the two other answers that are basically okay but use read without -r, and decided that the whole page just needed to be swept away. :)
@George Hello. The history of "are custom kernels of topic" that I referred to is that pilot6 closed voted a large number of custom kernel questions for being off topic. Many reviewers including me thought that pilot6 knew what he was doing and close voted along with him until the matter came to the attention of hexafraction who asked the Meta question.
Originally, this question was closed due to a mis-wording, and is now in the process of being reopened. Another user pointed out to me that they believe that a custom kernel makes a post off-topic (while the original post may have been mentioning a proxy configuration, that is beside the point). ...
I don't understand the question. A custom kernel is mostly the same as any other kernel.
@karel If the system hasn't deleted them, we can reopen them, so long as there's no other factor that would justify keeping them closed. Btw I'll move this discussion of site scope and opening/reclosing questions to the Downboat soon. It's one of the things that room is for. This room is so that discussions like this can be seen and thrive there rather than being mixed up in unrelated talk.

@George Uh... they tell us what they changed? But maybe I don't understand you. Ubuntu is an operating system. As such, it cannot actually be true that "Ubuntu won't even talk to one who makes such a kernel" -- so what do you mean by that? Do you mean that downstream kernel bug reports must be verified to apply with official builds? People often bring that up in discussion of support for custom kernels on Ask Ubuntu and other support sites. But it's not relevant in any obvious way.
Have you read the meta question? I believe it has answers that address this directly.
Also, if you disagree, you may want to vote on the posts there (up or down as you see fit) and also maybe post your own answer making your case, if you don't feel any answer does so already.
@George Reviewing this matter further I need to make a correction. Pilot6 wasn't an Ask Ubuntu user yet when hexafraction originally asked the Meta question. Someone must have commented and linked the Meta post to a custom kernel question that Pilot6 close voted as off topic and that was what brought the Meta post to my attention.
I read the meta question @EliahKagan and I see the answer from Mateo which I may quote from "
Building and using a custom kernel will make it very difficult to get support for your system.
While it is a learning experience to compile your own kernel, you will not be allowed to file bugs on the custom-built kernel (if you do, they will be Rejected without further explanation)."
@George Yeah, I've read all the answers on that question. You can see my comment on that one, which fully addresses what Mateo said as well as what you've said here. Like I said, the restriction people bring up is that bug reports aren't accepted. That has nothing to do with whether or not we should allow it on Ask Ubuntu.
I'm not sure if you're trying to express any particular position on this issue right now, and if you are, I'm not sure what that position is. Surely we shouldn't disallow questions because they might be harder than some other questions. Part of what makes Stack Exchange sites work is that enough of the questions are at a level that will interest and challenge users with a lot of knowledge and experience.

@EliahKagan I am relative new here and watch more experienced users tackle questions and I have seen a question closed that was asked on how to resolve an issue with a custom kernel build and this was from several experienced users. But that being said I will now make the needed changes to my voting

I not flaged or something, just commented. I had begun to write an answer but after that i found it would not be satisfying as an answer so i changed it around and posted a comment instead
well who knows, I'm actually thinking on going the opposite way, having in future systems two users, one which belongs in the sudo group and one who doesn't this will then be my user for everyday affairs
What information can we request here so that a solution might be possible? (It's really unclear rather than necessarily off-topic. That version of Mint doesn't correspond to 14.04 anyway, suggesting they may really be attempting to use both systems.)
seems to be posted in good faith, but are they actually reading those questions? Probably we have innumerable vague questions about dodgy wifi performance... which may or may not be closeable as dupes of each other
what's this question really about? The user hasn't been seen since January. I don't know what to do... it seems unclear to me because it seems like they are really asking how to finish sudoedit (confused by the temp filename)
