^^ It's a success report and thanks answer for an answer posted only as a comment. I'm not sure if it should be deleted or edited to make it into an answer.

2:26 AM
seems the information is worth keeping
I got a review audit :)
@EliahKagan I see what actually happened and it seems fine, but should the question be edited at all?
I wonder if Unix & Linux will want this question

@EliahKagan I couldn't see any reason not to salvage the answer - the fix seems highly valuable to me - so I did edit it, but maybe I should have asked you about your doubt first

@Zanna Seems fine to me. A more detailed description might be possible. It doesn't really look like an answer, even since the edit, even though it one. I've done another edit, which doesn't address that problem, but which fixes a typo and quotes the OP's comment (since I believe the specific term "D3cold" actually appears, at least for the OP).

thanks!

@Zanna Not that I can think of. I think something like that answer (further modified) would be suitable for the post. At least, something like it should exist somewhere; I haven't found anything here or on Unix & Linux that speaks to the technical issues from those old comments.
The idea that mv across filesystems is equivalent to a cp followed by an rm is widespread and ought to be addressed. The GNU coreutils documentation doesn't support it but doesn't refute it either. That's separate from what should go in the question, though. What kind of edit to the question are you thinking of?

it's just this part that seems like it needs removing or changing somehow
> Sudodus, thank you. I still don't get it fully but I understand I should've used the mount point. I used it and it worked, like magic. Nothing was erased from the USB, so I am not sure why you apologized.

@Zanna No problem. I still think the answer can be improved. Usually I phrase answers that hoist commented solutions to answerdom with phrasing like, "The solution to this problem was given in a comment..." I didn't think of a way to apply any such phrasing to this answer while preserving its meaning and intent though.
@Zanna Oh.

@EliahKagan I think that
is one major reason why it's such a useful question!

@Natty fp - would benefit from expansion, but gives a solution

10:25 AM
@Zanna The issue is made more confusing by how the GNU Coreutils documentation (info mv) refers to mv's behavior of replacing target files as overwriting, such as in the description of --no-clobber.
Furthermore, the wording of the description of --backup suggests that perhaps mv does sometimes write an existing target file ("Make a backup of each file that would otherwise be overwritten or removed") even though I don't believe that's the case. It would be good to have an answer like sudodus's (though further edited).
Unfortunately sudodus is not pingable in comments on any post there or in AUGR (nor here). Of course, a sufficiently nontrivial edit will produce a notification, but I don't want to to do that without prior discussion, since it appears sudodus's express intention was not to keep the answer.
no improvement, it's already formatted as code
This question sounds vaguely familiar. Do we already have something for it?

@EliahKagan Well, I didn't find anything.

@EliahKagan lol hope nobody takes it upon themselves to change indented code blocks to fenced code blocks in every existing post

Is there a way to improve this question so it is no longer unclear, based on the context of installation given in the question and the OP having accepted an answer about apt install -f?

do we install Chrome by downloading a .deb file from a website?
there could be some advice to use sudo dpkg -i [...] and then sudo apt install -f

Yes.

^^ Excellent.
This edit is mostly good but it removed some potentially relevant information:
> it was undervolted and undercloked to keep the system from cooking itself like it was out of the box (0.762V @1250Mhz 60-70C)
I'm not sure if it should be rejected, or approved with an edit.
Can Why do people still type “vi” at the command prompt rather than “vim”? be reasonably edited so that it is no longer opinion-based? I'd been meaning to look into that further but didn't get around to it.

@EliahKagan I can't think why they felt the need to remove that, but didn't want their otherwise good effort to be wasted so I "improved"

Thanks.

impressive :)

um... not sure about the insertion of step 7 in this suggested edit. The indentation is improved though (the code block becoming bullet points is possibly a regression, but it does match the style of the post) hmm

@Zanna Yeah, I'm not sure what should actually be done with that step, but even if it should be kept, my Approve review (rather than Edit) was wrong. Sorry about that.
Maybe that added info is too marginal to deserve being added to the answer. Also, it's phrased in terms of a user's experience with an another OS whose default DE is rarely used on Ubuntu; at minimum, it should not be presented that way.

4:43 PM
@Zanna Why so? Is your concern that it could've been intended as a comment on that other answer?

I know it was intended as an answer, but everyone wanted to delete it
(that is, I think it was intended as an answer because the author posted the same answer on around 10 other questions)
@EliahKagan I didn't notice that you had approved it... just posting it here in case anyone had a smart idea of what to do about it

Unfortunately I had the opposite of a smart idea of what to do about it at the time I reviewed it.

@EliahKagan yes... especially since nobody will know this bit was an interpolation by someone else

I really wish I could undo my review there.
I mean, I can edit from the revision history for a no-penalty reject. But I'm not sure that's appropriate in this case.
(Not because of the reject not counting toward a possible future review ban; those are rare anyway. Just because I'm not sure what should actually be done with the post.)

shall we reject it? Or could the addition be re-written or perhaps added as a footnote

4:50 PM
One of those things, yes. :)
Or Edit it to incorporate most of the formatting changes but remove the new material entirely.
I'm leaning toward thinking it should be rejected.
@Zanna Well, whatever should happen with that post, it's not a comment. The review comment saying it is one is wrong. The post also has no downvotes.

@EliahKagan indeed
if we reject the edit, this person (who obviously intended to help) might just see whatever feedback we give them when they notice they didn't get +2 (this is their second ever edit suggestion) and then again they might not, but, if we improve the edit, we can ping them by commenting on the post and say something more helpful about this suggestion that they will get an actual notification about
it actually seems that step 7 ought to be at the beginning if anywhere
it's like when you get to step 4 of a recipe and it says "strain the tamarind that you have soaked for 30 minutes"
only you haven't, because they never mentioned that before now
@Zanna no it's in the right place, it's a preparation step

5:13 PM
I can't seem to edit it into anything good

Maybe it should just be rejected then?

I saw in the comments this editor is working on the post with the author
I have edited it, but I am not very happy with that
I tried rejecting it as well, but I couldn't manage to write a reject message that made sense
I tried editing it and removing the 7th step altogether, but then I couldn't write an edit summary that I liked
oh well. At least you can edit it now
if you can see a better solution :)
