Potentially dangerous suggestion to install a random kernel module by the same user:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1058613/480481 and https://askubuntu.com/a/1076377/480481

6:20 PM
@pomsky funny tho on 16.04 this could be a valid answer according to the version numbers used but on the other side for 18.04 the driver has a whole different version number, i know since my laptop exactly needs bcwl-ddriver
so to be sure i delete voted the answer on 18.04, but im unsure on the one on 16.04 question

6:50 PM
@Videonauth But OP didn't mention their wireless device. Suggesting a random kernel module without checking someone's device is a bad suggestion as it is imo.

@pomsky it is but as long im unsure this is a valid answer, i follow my credo, if in doubt do nothing

I understand, my main issue is the way the answers are presented. It looks to me as if the answerer is claiming that these two magic commands will fix any kind of Wi-Fi issues in Ubuntu without even explaining what they do.
If my memory is not betraying, the same user posted the same answer to other questions too (now deleted), even when the question mentioned OP had some other device (Realtek or something).

ah ok, well i do not know the full story behind it, like i said on 18.04 i am very sure i can cast my delete vote on that, on the 16.04 im not entirely sure
anyhow it is with a delete vote anyways in the review que so im feirly sure it will be dealth with accordingly

7:12 PM
Hey @karel I have just posted Q&A as we discussed recently. Here is the link for the same: askubuntu.com/questions/1076408/how-do-i-install-netbeans-9-0/…

@pomsky This answer turned out to be the accepted answer after all, so I cosmetic edited it in case anyone wants to reverse their downvote.

7:33 PM
@karel Good catch tho, i not checked the comments but refused somehow to cast a delete vote on it, maybe someone should comment on that to prevent deletion?

What is up with youtube-dl? Updated python, ffmpeg, youtube-dl, and google chrome getting the REGEX error.

@xtrchessreal it should have fixed itself already with the latest libc++ and so on updates

thanks

had the same happen on my machine on sunday
after updating java11 packets
then it took about a day and a full dist-upgrade and it worked again

7:49 PM
@karel Aha! Sorry missed the comment :( I upvoted and to change the score to zero from -1, hopefully there will be no more delete votes.

8:11 PM
@pomsky The score on that answer is now 0. Hopefully everything will be OK when the dust settles.

Hi
If anyone is available I would appreciate some help
I want to give a user read write privileges to /var/www/html while keeping root the owner

@JBis use groups for that

here's current permissions:
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Sep 18 21:10 html
@Videonauth I don't want the user to have root permissions though

don'T you have a www group?

Apparently not
or at least not on that
This is a fresh GC ubuntu 18.04 machine

create a group for that, give that group the right permissions you want that user to have, add root and that user to that group then change permissions on that folder to haver the group having rwx permissionis
so chmod 0775

9:37 PM
ok
chown root:[newgroup]?

jupp

sudo groupadd
@Videonauth Would I have to set permissions recursively? I have files in /var/www/html

uhm, maybe but try first to only give that directory those permissions

ok
just changed permissions

you can as well use find for only change the directories and or files
find /path/ -type d (directories)

9:41 PM
ah good idea but they can have access to all of it
r&w
@Videonauth Thanks for help. I'll be back in 5 min with another question prob :)

10:06 PM
@Videonauth Ok I'm back
all is good. How do I set it up so all the permissions are set recursively and are applied to files created by that user?

so recursively set permissions you can do chown -Rv root:newgroup /var/www/html/ and set permissions with chmod -Rv 0755 /var/www/html/
and files created by this user? how does that happen? per FTP or directly on that system?

sftp

for ftp refer to the manual for the server software you using for local use umask
since sftp is a local like login (ssh protocol) you should be able to create a umask profile for that user

@Videonauth yay

10:14 PM
:)

So is it just umask 0755?

umask is the oposite to permission set

I need to brush up on unix permissions.

umask 022 means files are created 0755

any clue why?

10:16 PM
since you want create files 775 you would need umask 002
no clue tbh :)

So do I need to be logged in as that user or can I just do from root?

umask is normaly declare in that users .profile or bashrc

hmm

in profile if
$ cat .profile
# ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells.
# This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login
# exists.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples.
# the files are located in the bash-doc package.

# the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask
# for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package.
#umask 022

# if running bash
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then
# include .bashrc if it exists
see the comment section of the profile file
this is from a debian server

so should I add to ~/.bash_profile or "install and configure the libpam-umask package"

10:21 PM
for setting the umask for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package
but i never had to do that myself so your on your own there a bit
since im always the sole user on my servers i never had to set up other usersaccess

ah

just knoiwing hypothetical what to do if i would need to do it

Just tried to add file but getting permission denied will that be fixed with umask? Shouldnt I be able to wright

but if i have to read it up and then transfer this information by word you can do as well read it up first hand

write*
@Videonauth yep

10:24 PM
are you in that new group?
or are you root atm ?

(using the user added to the group)
open for write: permission denied

are the files 775 ?
7 (user) 7 (group) 5 (others)

@Videonauth which?

the one you want to write to?

Folder: `drwxr-xr-x 8 root ftpgroup 4096 Sep 18 20:38 assets`
FIle: `-rwxr-xr-x 1 root ftpgroup 6550 Sep 18 20:35 page-5.php`

10:28 PM
your folder is 0755: rwx for user, r-x for group, r-x for others
and your file too
you want 0775
rwx for user, rwx for group and r-x for other

chmod -Rv 0775 /var/www/html/

(r)ead (w)rite e(x)ecute

aha

so permission should be rwxrwxr-x

-rwxrwxr-x = 7(rwr)7(rwx)5(rx)

10:30 PM
first tripple is for user second triple for group and the third triple fpor all others

what about drwxrwxr-x

@JBis right
as long you dorectl y access the file only the file needs that permission set
when you want to create new files in that directory you need to give the directory proper permissions too

now it wont allow sftp to connect :(
@Videonauth solution() == umask

should be but on Ask Ubuntu you should find tons of questions regarding this or on Unix & Linux
btw those numbers are octal so 7 means 1 (execute) + 2 (write) + 4 (read) = 7

lol
ok

so a permission for someone to have read/write access but not allowance to execute would be 6 = 2+4
read and execute would be 5 = 1+4
alternatively you can write the command as well chmod ug+rwx
wher u stands for user g for group and o for other and a for all
i myself prefer the numbers theyre not so confusing for me :D

@Videonauth ah. Gotta get used to them :)
Still working on SFTP problem. Brb
And thanks for help !!!!!

sftp relys on sshd_config in /etc/ssh
and the umask like i said i never had to use this

I think issue with client not server. Getting "packet_write_wait: Connection to xx.xx.xx.xx port 22: Broken pipe"

10:48 PM
smells like it yes :)
firewall to check
routing to check

im too lazy to get another computer. lol. I'm gonna SSH to a diff server then ssh to the correct one

chek if the client has a proper ssh key for loging onto the server, do not use password login for ssh or sftp

@Videonauth currently using pwd to login for simplicity but I have key setup I will use it once everything is working

ah ok, just saying :)

Just confirmed not working on 3 machines

10:50 PM
mhmmmm

tried changing permissions back didnt help

broken pipe always?

yep

thats is not a permission problem i think

Q: What does the Broken pipe message mean in an SSH session?

Peter StuifzandSometimes my SSH session disconnects with a Write failed: Broken pipe message. What does it mean? And how can I keep my session open? I know about screen, but that's not the answer I'm looking for. I think this is a sshd config option.

10:52 PM
ah ok :)

@Videonauth as I was typing "Although I doubt permissions had anything to do with it"
lol

well im off to bed, its getting late here

hmm I doubt that will fix but will check
@Videonauth Good night! Thanks for help :)

youre welcome
heres something for you to bookmark :)

@Videonauth Ah thanks
Narrowed it down to the ChrootDirectory /var/www/html
in ssh_config

11:03 PM
symlink html to the users directory and chroot him in there
this way you not need to give var or www other permissions
only html and inward

well then no chroot right?

chroot to lock the user in his directory
the symlink should make him able to access html directory

ok one sec...
should it be a folder in his user directory or the user dir itself

in the users directory do the following:
ln -s /var/www/html html
when you then cd /home/$USER/html you should be actually in /var/www/html
but pwd will show you as actual path /home/$USER/html
┌─[01:07:31]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> testing $ ln -s ../.local local
┌─[01:07:47]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> testing $ ll
total 8,0K
drwxr-xr-x 2 michael michael 4,0K Sep 19 01:07 ./
drwxr-xr-x 62 michael michael 4,0K Sep 18 19:49 ../
lrwxrwxrwx  1 michael michael    9 Sep 19 01:07 local -> ../.local/
┌─[01:07:48]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> testing $ cd local
┌─[01:07:53]─[michael@NEXUS-ONE]
└──> local $ pwd
/home/michael/testing/local

I did that
anything specified with Chroot breaks
even the home folder
I am checking somehthing
What should be permissions for www and html?
Who own and what numbers?

11:16 PM
for www should the owner be root:root and permissions unchanged
or on ubuntu and debian normally the system makes a www_user or group
on my debian server www is owned by root:root and is 755 permission wise

drwxr-xr-x 3 0 0 4096 Sep 18 20:15 www

but on the other side im not using those directories at all i customized the paths in apache.conf

html 755?

html for your purposes should be 775 not 755
the group should have full access

ok switched that
chown: invalid group: ‘root:ftpuser’
(ftpuser is a group)

11:21 PM
does that group exist?

typo
fixed it
now chown works

grep 'ftpuser' /etc/group
;)

but original problem still happening
failing

well im out of clues
try wihtout chroot maybe

it works without chroot

11:23 PM
simply ssh into the user over an other server
normally if you keep this user pretty restricted he should not be able to od much on the system anyways even if he might be able to list some directories

wdym?
its not working from anywhere

Q: SSH - ChrootDirectory not working

Jonathan GaudéI am trying to chroot a "test" user (group sftp) to /home/test. I've added the following lines at the end of my sshd_config: Subsystem sftp internal-sftp Match User test ChrootDirectory /home/test X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no ForceCommand internal-sftp home and testd...

the special files in /etc/ for example are read/write only for root and read for root group
most of the settings files are like this unless you messed them up

Q: SFTP ChRoot result in broken pipe

Patrick PruneauI have a website that I want to add some restricted access to a sub-folder. For this, I've decided to use CHROOT with SFTP (I mostly followed this link : http://shapeshed.com/chroot_sftp_users_on_ubuntu_intrepid/) For now, I've created a user (sio2104) and a group (magento). After following the g...

@Videonauth I can show you the ssh cofnig
d
Match User newuser
ForceCommand internal-sftp
PasswordAuthentication yes
ChrootDirectory /var/www/html
#ChrootDirectory /home/newuser
PermitTunnel no
#AllowAgentForwarding no
AllowTcpForwarding no
X11Forwarding no
ClientAliveInterval 120
everything works if I comment chroot
I can even follow the symlink

well make html itself again owned by root:root
but just this folder, not recursive

tried that
but will again

11:28 PM
ah ok

sudo chown root:root /var/www/html
I GOT IT
ChrootDirectory /var/www
idk why
but that worked
@Videonauth Thanks again for help!!!
Appreciate it greatly
