@KeshavSrinivasan in South India, those who worship Grama Devatas (Forms of Devi and Vishnu) are more than any proper sects. You can add it to your answer.

2 hours later…
6:23 AM
@TheDestroyer Well, those people can select "other" or "I don't identify with a particular sect". By the way, can you do me a favor? Can you delete my "I'm a Sri Vaishnava" answer and repost it in your name? That way I'll be able to upvote it. Because you can't upvote your own post.

@KeshavSrinivasan I think, better way is to allow users to post it. What if a user upvotes all posts.
But counting votes is tedious in this case.

@TheDestroyer Well, we'll see how this goes for now. Other Metas have conducted polls in similar formats.

@KeshavSrinivasan moreover, there are also people who are born in particular sect or developed interest towards other dieties or sects.

@TheDestroyer Yeah, that's true. That's why I said you can either put your family's sect or the one you personally believe in.
@TheDestroyer So can you do that reposting thing?

@KeshavSrinivasan ok. I will do. I think you missed Shakta. Ganapatis..

6:28 AM
@TheDestroyer Yeah, I left out a lot of sects, because they wouldn't have very many adherents on the site. In any case if there are any they can always select other and then specify in the comments.
@TheDestroyer I left out Sauras, Shaktas, Ganapatyas, Ramanandis, Swaminarayan people, Nimbarka people, Vaikhanasas, Arya Samaj, etc.

@KeshavSrinivasan No. There are many people who pray to Grama Devats in south. They all come to Shakta sect or at least have form of Devi as Kula Devata.
@KeshavSrinivasan In anycase, i suggest you to add Shakta. There are three users on this site who are Shaktas. Me by birth, Rakesh, Rickross (though he is Vaishnava by birth).

@TheDestroyer I think Rakesh would come in under Kashmiri Shaivite, as would Rohit.

@KeshavSrinivasan But his Ista Deva is Devi.

@TheDestroyer OK, I'll put a Shakta.

@KeshavSrinivasan I anycase, i upvoted for Advaita, but i think poll is difficult to decide. Which one is priority? Birth or interest?

6:41 AM
@TheDestroyer I'm just giving the people the freedom to decide. Anyway it's just a fun pill, so it doesn't matter too much what people put :-)

@KeshavSrinivasan ohh.. I thought your were trying to find answer for your question about % of different sects. Lol.

@TheDestroyer Haha no, for that I would want to do research on formal demographic studies. The purpose of this question is basically to get a database of what users belong to what sects, so I know who I can ask if I have a question about a particular sect.

@KeshavSrinivasan I'm sure Atheist or Agnostic vote is from Sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan ok.

@TheDestroyer Haha yeah, he often seems to lean in the Charvaka direction.
@TheDestroyer By the way, I think ram is a Sri Vaishnava.

@KeshavSrinivasan Yeah. Even i think he is Sri Vaishnava.

6:55 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Which answer are you talking about?

6
Q: Community Poll: What sect or school of Hinduism do you believe in?

Keshav SrinivasanI often post questions about obscure sects of Hinduism, and I'm unsure of whether we have any members of those sects on the site. So I thought I'd it would be helpful to myself and others to create a poll to identify what sects of Hinduism are represented in our community. You can participate...

@TheDestroyer Whoa. I am missing meta these days.
What are those answers?
How can one select one? Just by upvoting?
Shakta by birth? @TheDestroyer

@SreeCharan yes. upvote sect your follow currently.
@SreeCharan Yes.
@SreeCharan She is very helpful to us for many generations.

Oh! Okay.

Oh! I thought it's because of deegra

@KrishnShweta Visit IAST & ITRANS
There are several methods of transliteration from Devanāgarī to the Roman script (a process known as romanization) which share similarities, although no single system of transliteration has emerged as the standard. == IAST == The International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST) is a subset of the ISO 15919 standard, used for the transliteration of Sanskrit, Prakrit and Pāḷi into Roman script with diacritics. IAST is a widely used standard. It uses diacritics to differentiate between retroflex and dental consonants (e.g. making dental द=d and retroflex ड=ḍ, which is more readable...

10:01 AM
@TheDestroyer I just finished watching 'Bahubali The Conclusion'... did you watch it... ?

@Pandya - Yes , already know abt.that😊👍👍 & yes that's the comprehensive info. at one place💻

@Tezz No. Booked Sunday .
@Tezz how was it?

10:21 AM
@Tezz @TheDestroyer Have you read Sri M's second book? It got delivered to me yesterday and I completed the whole book the same day! Quite a lot of fascinating stuff in there!

@ChinmaySarupria ohh... I will order it.
@ChinmaySarupria what did he mention? did he see Mahavatar Babaji again?
@ChinmaySarupria Did he mention about his previous births?

11:22 AM
@Tezz How was that?

11:43 AM
@RakeshJoshi I'm deleting your message.

show me any guru who has not initiated anyone ... then whats use of lineage ?

when you take you have to give out also .

@RakeshJoshi that's entirely different from mocking. You showed your rage when someone commented on Sai baba. But how can you do the same to other?

cos many things are false claims ..
saibaba helped lay people ... with spiritual and non spiritual
what is sri m doing in madanapally? is walk of hope enough ?

It's your personal belief. But you can't make sarcastic comments on anyone.
@RakeshJoshi He's indirectly helping many spiritual aspirants with his books. May be you just don't know how he's helping.

if i say i met shiva yesterday in my backyard what will you say?
not helping but its just like fiction or mystery books .

i havent abused him or anything .

11:49 AM
@RakeshJoshi It's upto. If you lie, you will face the consequences.

i m not saying about consequences. but how will people react to it ?
as a social worker he is good .. but what aboiyut spiritualist

@RakeshJoshi We are not discussing technicalities here. But at same time you shouldn't mock or write bad about his books.

its just said that it was entertaining book.. not something abusive

@RakeshJoshi His books already evoked profound interest in Spirituality on many people. Just see comments or reviews.
@RakeshJoshi Still, what if someone calls Agamas as entertaining book?

let them..
already your sankara has abused some agamas no ? did we file case against him?

11:54 AM
@RakeshJoshi Abuse or refute?

i think he called them anti vedic or something

@RakeshJoshi You lose the chance to retort if you call other books as entertaining.

so crux is if sankara speak wrong about other sects and books its right .
cos he has mutts ..

@RakeshJoshi Ridiculous. Why do bring persons who no longer live? Many people even called Shankara Drunkard as mentioned in your own question.

so what you expect? vaishnava to praise him? after calling their texts anti vedic ?
if ordinary person makes statement its wrong .. if a famous scholar makes then its right ? why such hypocrisy ?

11:59 AM
@RakeshJoshi Why the hell are you talking all this? Can't you limit our discussion to current times and SE sites.

cos you brought agamas... not me .
ok i m leaving this room.

@RakeshJoshi Ok. I will talk you in Agama room.

@TheDestroyer @Tezz Yes he mentioned about his past lives, he mentioned a lot about Mahavatar Babaji as well, in fact he mentioned his meeting with lots of great personalities including Lord Krishna in one of his past births. He was born in Mahabharata era and participated in the war.

@ChinmaySarupria Wow! Yes. I think he mentioned he was born in Yadu clan in an interview.
@ChinmaySarupria Ohh.. Did he say Mahavatar Babji is Shiva again. I read 1st two chapters on Amazon free preview.

@TheDestroyer Lord Krishna said Mahavatar Babaji is my manifestation.

12:06 PM
@ChinmaySarupria ohh.. It's tricky. So, we should equate Shiva = Krishna for that?

@TheDestroyer Sri Krishna said to Sri M that he will be born in Jaisalmer in the family of Yadu lineage and there he(Krishna) will send a great Siddha, that siddha was Mahavatar Babaji
@TheDestroyer I think yes, in 1st book, voice of Babaji was coming from Shiva and now Krishna says Babaji is his manifestation so I also think the same, Shiva = Krishna

@ChinmaySarupria ohh..ok. But he was born in Kerala/

@TheDestroyer Yeah he mentioned a lot about his past births, one of them was in Jaisalmer and in that birth, he met Babaji for the first time.

@ChinmaySarupria ohh ok. Is that birth in which he scolded a Muslim fakir and due to that he was born in Muslim family?
@ChinmaySarupria What else interesting things he mentioned?

@TheDestroyer No, that birth happened much later, Jaisalmer birth happened before Jaisalmer was even created!
He was born as a ruler in the desert kingdom.
@TheDestroyer He also mentioned 2 techniques of astral projection

12:12 PM
@ChinmaySarupria ohh.. so, he met Mahavatar Babaji many times.

Yes
@TheDestroyer With those 2 techniques, we can get out of this physical body in day or night and go wherever we want with our astral body
@TheDestroyer He said his guru Maheshwarnath Babaji taught him many techniques on astral projection but he is only allowed to disclose two.

@ChinmaySarupria ohh..but i think dangerous to practice on our own. Should try them under guidance of Guru.
@ChinmaySarupria Did he say anything else about his past or future?

@TheDestroyer Both of them he mentioned are safe, that's why his guru didn't allow him to disclose other techniques

@ChinmaySarupria ohh ok.

@TheDestroyer He didn't say anything about his future but one sage he met told him that this will be his last birth

12:16 PM
@ChinmaySarupria ohh..So, moksha after this birth. He can live happily this birth. Haha.

But Babaji also said one thing in 1st book: after this current birth, he will go back to him
So not sure what that means.

@ChinmaySarupria which babaji? Maheshwarnath or Mahavatar?

Mahavatar Babaji

@ChinmaySarupria i think he meant mingling with him.
If he is Krishna = Shiva.
@ChinmaySarupria Did he describe how Krishna looked?

@TheDestroyer No but he did mention about Krishna playing flute on full moon night and then his meeting with him where Sri Krishna told him about his future births, he met Krishna once more in Mahabharatara war
Krishna said his austerities of several past births were the reason that he got opportunity to meet him

12:24 PM
@ChinmaySarupria haha. He could have asked Moksha at that time itself. Missed an oppurtunity, if it was true.

@TheDestroyer Krishna himself said he will have to take further births for spiritual evolution and then he'll send Mahavatar Babaji to be his guru.

@ChinmaySarupria ok. On which side he particpated in war?

@TheDestroyer Krishna asked him to participate on Pandavas side and told that he will die in war, also he was born a rishiputri in that birth so Krishna told him to disguise as a soldier.

@ChinmaySarupria ohh..ok.
@ChinmaySarupria Rishiputri? Female?

12:30 PM
@ChinmaySarupria ohh.. Did women participate in Mahabharata war? I am not sure.

@TheDestroyer That's why Krishna told him to disguise as a man and then participate

@ChinmaySarupria ohh..ok.
@ChinmaySarupria Did he say anything about Islam and how it is related to Hinduism.

He was also born as a begum of Muslim ruler

@ChinmaySarupria ohh..

1:34 PM
@TheDestroyer @Pandya It's nice and interesting... we commented using the phrases like missiles, telescopes, Dharma themselves fight etc ... etc... haha... while watching...
@Pandya When are you watching... ?
@ChinmaySarupria Oh... it's interesting... do you have soft copy or hard copy.... if its pdf can you send it to me....
@Pandya wow it's nice site...
@KeshavSrinivasan omg... I downloaded that pdf of that question... I don't understand what he exactly is trying to say in other points also... It's like horrible points... haha😀😀

@Tezz I have hard copy, bought it from Amazon

1:54 PM
@ChinmaySarupria Oh ok... btw what is the name of book?..

2:25 PM
@Tezz which question.
@Tezz where?
@Tezz To get soft copy, i think we should wait untill someone purchases kindle version and pirate it. haha.

2:38 PM
@Tezz I've not watched yet. Planning to watch soon
@KeshavSrinivasan After searching and reading, I found that knowing about all major Samradaya is complicated.

2:56 PM
@Tezz You downloaded the PDF of what question?
@Pandya Haha no, it was inspired by someone telling me that a Madhwa had just joined the site. So then I said that the site now has four Madhwas on it (Bhargav Rao, Aditya S, the new guy, and one other person whose name I forget), and I wanted to know all the sects of Hinduism that are represented on the site.

@KeshavSrinivasan ok. Btw, I think Madhawa Sampradaya also caled Brahma Sampradaya

3:27 PM
@Pandya Yeah, Brahma Sampradayam includes both Madhwas and Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
@Pandya The reason that Gaudiyaa Vaishnavas consider themselves part of the Brahma Sampradayam is that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's guru Ishwara Puri was a follower of Madhvacharya.
@Pandya By the way, Ishwara Puri was the shishya of Madhavendra Puri, who was the one who discovered the Srinathji statue in Govardhana Giri.
@Pandya But ironically it is Rudra Sampradayam people, i.e. Vallabhacharya's Pushtimarga sect, who mainly worship Srinathji, not Brahma Sampradayam people.
@RakeshJoshi It's your initiation anniversary? Congratulations! Who were you initiated by and what Parampara/Sampradayam does that person belong to?

3:48 PM
@TheDestroyer @KeshavSrinivasan oh... it's from that astronomical msg... here... chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/36951516#36951516
@TheDestroyer haha...
@Pandya Oh ok... l

@Tezz Oh ok
@Tezz Yeah, it's funny that he "refutes" the theory that the Earth is in motion.

@KeshavSrinivasan haha...

@Tezz By the way, I posted a question about that astronomical text here:
3
Q: What is the Kanya region of Bharatavarsha, identified as the only residence of the four castes?

Keshav SrinivasanLalla's Shishyavriddhida Tantra is a Hindu astronomical work dating to the 8th century. In this excerpt from the Shishyavriddhida Tantra, Lalla describes the geography of Bharatavarsha, i.e. the Indian subcontinent: There are (nine) parts of (the country of Bharata), viz., Aindra, Kaseru, Ta...

@Tezz By the way, it's interesting that one of the theories he refutes is that night is caused by Mount Meru blocking the Sun. I've never come across the claim in Hindu scripture, so I may post a question on that.

@KeshavSrinivasan Oh ok..
@KeshavSrinivasan I also do not know any theory on night being caused due to blocking of Sun by Mount Meru...

4:04 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Yes, I noticed it. And think Pushtimarga (Vallabha Sampradaya) also called Rudra Sampradaya.

4:19 PM
@Pandya Yeah, at least Vallabhacharya's Pushtimarga sect is the only surviving sect of Hinduism that traces its origins to Rudra Sampradayam. Although some people say that Vallabhacharya does not come from Vishnuswami and the Rudra Sampradayam at all, as I discuss here:
2
Q: Who is sage Jalabimba and what is his connection to Vishnuswami and the Rudra Sampradayam?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in my question here, Vishnu is said to have taught the principles of Vaishnavism to four disciples: Lakshmi, Brahma, Shiva and Sanatkumara. And in turn they started the four main Sampradayas or traditions of Vaishnavism: Sri Sampradayam, Brahma Sampradayam, Rudra Sampradayam, and Kum...

@Pandya By the way, in case you don't know, there are four Vaishnava Sampradayams: Sri Sampradayam, Brahma Sampradayam, Rudra Sampradayam, and Kumara Sampradayam. That's because Vishnu had four disciples: Lakshmi, Brahma, Shiva and Sanatkumaras.
@Pandya The Sri Sampradayam contains the Sri Vaishnava sect, the Ramanandi sect, and the Swaminarayan sect.
@Pandya The Brahma Sampradayam contains the Madhwas and Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
@Pandya The Rudra Sampradayam presently contains only the Pushtimarga sect, although at one point it contained Vishnuswami's sect which may or may not be completely different from the Pushtimarga sect.
@Pandya And the Kumara Sampradayam contains Nimbarkacharya's sect.
@Pandya I think Nimbarkacharya's sect is very small. I know they have Mathams and international organizations and all that just like the other sects, but I don't think I've ever met a single follower of Nimbarkacharya.

2 hours later…
5:58 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Yes, I has recently came to know it. Thanks!
Btw, I want to know about Shaiv Sampradaya. @Tezz @TheDestroyer @Rickross
I found that mainly there are Pashupat, Kashmiri, Shiva Siddhanta, Tamil Shaiv, Veer Shaiv etc.

6:38 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan To be specific Ramanandis and SwamiNaryana people associate themselves with Sri Sampradayam on just their speculations, Sri Sampradya denies their presence as part of Sri Sampradaya.
@KeshavSrinivasan Also We can find out the Philosophy of Vishnuswami by looking into his philosophical works like bhagavad-gita.org/Gita/verse-01-01.html BG commentary
@SreeCharan Dude! your DP is awesome where do you get soo many good pics?!

@Yogi I don't know whether Sri Vaishnavas deny that Ramananda was in the Parampara of Ramanujacharya or not.

@KeshavSrinivasan Well If Ramanandis are really in the parampara then why don't they follow the parmpara i.e. initiate themselves with jeeyars.

@Yogi There are no surviving works of Vishnuswami. The Rudra Sampradayam commentary in that web page is by Sridhara Swami, who was a follower of Vallabhacharya.
@Yogi Because Ramananda founded his own sect of Hinduism. Ramanandis believe Ramananda was originally a shishya of a Sri Vaishnava Acharya and then he founded his own sect. It's just like Gaudiya Vaishnavas consider themselves part of the Brahma Sampradayam, because Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was originally a shishya of Ishwara Puri who was a follower of Madhvacharya.

7:20 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Oh yeah! It Showed VishnuSwami's photograph so I assumed that it is his own commentary.
@KeshavSrinivasan It doesn't matter if they don't follow sect rules they are indisputably outside the parampara, because they have described their own "Rules"

@Yogi Well, the question of whether you belong to a given Guru Parampara and the question of whether you belong to a given sect of Hinduism are separate questions. Gaudiya Vaishnavas are still in the Parampara of Madhvacharya even though their disagree with Madhvacharya.

7:46 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan Do you know about any Sri Vaishnava Matha / Parampara(Swayam acharya /Jeeyars)Supporting the Ramanandis as part of Parampara? I don't think I know any one matha.

7:57 PM
@Yogi I don't know of any statements of Sri Vaishnava Acharyas either confirming or denying that Ramananda was in the Parampara of Ramanujacharya.
@Yogi In any case I posted a question about it here:
4
Q: How does the Ramanandi sect originate from the Sri Vaishnava Parampara?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, Vishnu is said to have taught the principles of Vaishnavism to four gods: Lakshmi, Brahma, Shiva and Sanatkumara. And they in turn started the four main Sampradayas or traditions of Vaishnavism: Sri Sampradayam, Brahma Sampradayam, Rudra Sampradayam, and Kumara Samp...
