I'm still no comfortable with the fact that purely history question are allowed here on this site when there's a full blown SE site (History) for that.

Q: Did Yazid order his soldiers to kill Imam Hussain?

salam islamI was wondering, why did Yazid order his soldiers to kill Imam Hussien (May Allah be pleased with him)? Did he not know that Imam Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him) was actually the grandson of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him)?

I would have loved to see this question being answered there.
It doesn't mean that the community here couldn't answer the question there.
In the current fashion they have answered the question here

Q: Islamic history, on topic?

goldPseudoAs Robert explains in this post, we're trying to forge a Q&A site about Islam (the religion) rather than about subjects of interest to Muslims (the people). As for Islamic history, it seems to be a bit less defined how much of it would be "about Islam (the religion)". Obviously there have been ...

I'm not a huge fan of it, but when it involves a seminal event in how Islam has developed, I can understand its on-topicness.

Q: Why was my question about inheritance deleted?

muslim1I asked http://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/481/do-women-get-half-in-inheritance-than-men-do This question stayed for quite some time but then some users closed it and I finally a moderator deleted the question altogether. I wonder, if this is such a complicated question that cannot be answ...

@BleedingFingers that question fills me with consternation.

it's already attracted three answers with obviously partisan votes, two of which have already been deleted.
that usually indicates a fundamnetally bad question, yet the question has no close votes and only one downvote.
it is not a good sign at all.

This is a really important question IMO
I dont know why it is a bad question? really

@muslim1 then ask it in a way that doesn't get closed.

8:54 AM
I have given a use case, it is very specific

and it was closed.

right I am not why would someone close it and then delete it altogather
pretty on topic. It is question about Islam.

asking questions is a privilege, not a right. bad questions get closed. closed questions are very likely to be deleted.

off topic question stays but on topic gets deleted lol
Well lets hope someone answer it
I am willing to improve it. But ppl generally are more interested in closing and deleting questions which might show negative aspect of Islam. I dont see anything wrong here myself

seriously? that's seriously the argument you're going with?
the question was closed over a year ago.

8:58 AM
and it is really really important point that I raised, inheritance when father is alive is probably different than inheritence when father is dead
but I guess it is bad question :(

by votes. one of the few questions we have that's actually closed by community consensus without moderator action.

right but then deleted altogather

because it was closed.
and nobody cared enough to fix it.
and the only upvoted answer basically said "I dunno."

the reason I cam to it, wanted to put bounty on it. Only to find, it was deleted :)
came

maybe you should've fixed it back in 2012 when it was closed. before it was deleted.
that's the whole point of closing first.

8:59 AM
People are gnerally not interested in some serious question like these
they are more interested in discussion type question, why is there is God, etc etc
some ask question about zakat, no one cares :)

alternatively, it was closed because it wasn't a real question.
which is exactly the close reason given.

I'd argue it is a real question. I mean I have raised a valid point. No one is intersted in answering it another thing.

five people decided it wasn't. why is your point more useful than five others?
FIVE people.
FIVE votes.

And intersting if this is such a complicated answer, we literally should have books written on inheritance, many many books but I dont think we have.

and NOBODY cared enough to fix it.
if you need books to answer a question, it's not a good question.

9:02 AM
There are two things, closed by 5 people. Ok agree. Then deleted by one moderator, I dont entirely agree with that.

focussed answers to focussed questions. that's the Stack Exchange way.

I really hope someone will answer it. It is about improving the site
once we realize what is wrong with this question, it can help as guidline fixing other questions as well.
This is a focus question, you dont agree?

nope.

may be you want to answer it on meta and discuss its weakness

nope.

9:04 AM
many people will get help from this

it was deleted because it was closed and nobody bothered to fix it.
if you wanted it not to be deleted, why didn't you fix it?

I know that but it is a important question.

why didn't you bring this issue up on meta over a year ago when it was closed and everyone could actually see the question and possibly provide constructive criticism?

I did
@AlUmmat helped me find my question and told me it was deleted.
That's when I knew why my question is not there.
Now I have more time and give time to this site myself so again active
can give time
undeleting should be a big deal I think
but anways, the question is on meta and it is open for answers.
Oh it did get one down vote :(
so with little bit of meta activity, we are welcome with a nice downvote :)
anyways thanks.

@BleedingFingers could you please tell me exactly which part of my answer to "Did Yazid order his soldiers to kill Imam Hussain?" made you think this answer contains plagiarized?
I can prove that answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080227060054AAE15gQ and imamhusain14.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html. contains plagiarized contents and my answer contains a summary of the main reference.

10:56 AM
I'm glad you asked
@MohammadHossein search the following on the search engine of your choice you'll get to know
"he avenged the death of his elders and near relatives who were killed in the battles of Hunain, Badr, and Uhud by killing the sons of the Prophet"
"It is written in Tzkiratul Khawas of Sibt Ibn Jauzi, page 148 that when the Prophet descendants were brought as prisoners to Syria, Yazid said the the"
Plus it would be better you state where exactly you got those quotes from
e.g. you most probably got "It is this world alone for us. There is no other world. We should not be deprived of the pleasures of this world" from ahlulbayt-academy.org/…
fix these and your answer shall most probably be undeleted
hope that answers your question

@BleedingFingers Thanks for your response
but did you yourself searched the above senteces? I tried and none of the findings matches except the one which is written by me. I really wonder your case! Try it. for the first sentence (he avenged the death of his elders...) only one result (Islam.estackexchange) was found and for the second one (It is written in Tzkiratul Khawas of Sibt Ibn Jauzi...) other similar but not the same results were found. Please be careful before accusation. Plus I never entered ahlulbayt-academy.org as much as I remeber and I had other sources using which I presen

3:26 PM
@BleedingFingers Salam, I checked and this answer has no plagiarized content. the comments saying it has plagiarized content is wrong and misunderstanding. please yourself check for plagiarized content.
I searched those sentences you quoted and it had no result in google unless this site.
please mention exactly what part is copied from what source.

3:45 PM
excuse me,I have a question.why when you down-vote an answer with adding comment about the reason, you get -1 point, too?

2 hours later…
5:51 PM
@beautifulmind It's to make you consider whether the answer is really bad enough to warrant a downvote
That way, when an answer actually is downvoted, the downvote carries more weight
but it's only -1 point so that it's not too big of a penalty to prevent people from doing it

6:27 PM
@MohammadHossein @BattleofKarbala duckduckgo.com/… (check the second result) and duckduckgo.com/… (check the first result).
about the quotations
duckduckgo.com/… (check the third result)

6:56 PM
@BattleofKarbala Plagiarism is more involved than "can be easily found on google". I checked that post myself, and confirmed that plagiarised content was present.
Good chunks of the post looked like it was just taking the original phrasings and changing a few words around so it was no longer a direct quote. That's as much plagiarism as ripping the page verbatim.

7:17 PM
@goldPseudo Salam, could you please help me with a problem?

insha'allah

Thanks, How can I present the information I gain from books as a part of my answer?

summarize it in your own words. give credit where it is due.

what do you mean by give credit?

don't pass off other people's work as your own. if you didn't do the research, if you don't understand the issue, don't act as if you did and/or do.
if some scholar went through the effort of gathering a list of hadiths and coming to a particular conclusion, make sure that you mention that he is the expert, not you.
if the only expertise you're able to offer on a topic is "According to such-and-such scholar, this is what happened..." then that's all your answer should indicate. don't try to duplicate his research.

7:29 PM
and if the issue is not sth to be understandable or not?....
and what are the differences between indication and duplication?

if you can't understand an issue well enough to put it in your own words, then you probably shouldn't be writing an answer on that issue.
if someone asks you to clarify a point you made, you should be able to clarify it. if someone offers constructive criticism to a post you made, you should be able to judge and apply it.
if you're just trying to duplicate someone else's research without even understanding it, that's basically fraud.
if your expertise in an area is just "This guy said such-and-such, so it's probably true", it's a terrible answer regardless of how much you copy from his work.
as far as I'm concerned, anyone who is unwilling or unable to apply the basic skills of critical reading/critical thinking/critical writing to a third-party text shouldn't be using that third-party text for anything on this site, period.

The problem is here that how you jump into such a conclusion; "You dont understand the issue"
It is not just "This guy said such-and-such, so it's probably true", it is letting the reader based on the narrations. Then what shoould I do if an scholar have gathered narrations in his articel, should I found new ones?
it is letting the reader conclude based on the narrations

7:46 PM
and how is that useful?
anyone can just quote a list of narrations.

If the narrations will guide you toward the right destination you've done the job

i reckon most people on this site lack enough knowledge of the hadith sciences to judge them.
are they authentic? are there stronger hadiths which contradict them? are they recorded in reliable collections? are they translated by a reliable translator? are they universally understood to mean exactly what they appear to say?

Ok I do agree with you

and more importantly, are you able to answer any of those questions yourself if you're asked to provide clarification?

I do agree with you that most people on this site lack enough knowledge of the hadith sciences to judge them.

7:51 PM
do you have any reason to believe that the person who even asked the question had enough knowledge to judge them?
if not, then they are not useful.
since you're answering his question personally.
If i was answering a question written by a Sunni, I'd be fine just quoting hadiths from Bukhari or Muslim as if they're authentic because that's what Sunni's pretty much universally believe. If i was answering a question written by a Shi'ite, I'd take more effort to establish authenticity. Context is vitally important when writing an answer.

If I were one of those questioners, I would search through other scholars and data bases.

if you're expecting the questioner to do all the research work himself, why bother duplicating that research in your answer?
just say "According to such-and-such scholar, this happened."

It is not doing all the research, is it?

just provide enough information to answer his question.
if quoting a wall of hadiths is necessary to answer the quesiton, chances are it's a bad question and should be closed.
if quoting a wall of hadiths is not necessary to answer the question, don't do it.
i could quote walls of hadiths in pretty much any answer i write. but i don't because it's useless and makes the actual answer harder to find.
and, as we agreed, most people lack the ability to actually make sense of those walls anyway. all it does it makes you look more experty without actually providing value.

Personally, when I quote a hadiths I'm trying to tell the questioner a fact which is reported by authenticated scholars
So I can conclude from what you said:
"Only experts might ask their questions here"
Because if other people do so, the answers will probably mislead them

8:11 PM
that is not what i said.
nor is it what i meant.

so please let me know how I made such a wrong conclusion

what i was trying to say was that if you don't even understand the issue you're writing about, you can't tailor it appropriately to the audience.
if the question is asked by an expert, you can write it as to an expert.
if the question is asked by a layman, you can write it as to a layman.
or, alternatively, if a layman asks a question that can't be reasonably answered, it can be closed.
but if you don't even understand what you're talking about, rather just taking research written by someone else, you can't even judge which of those situations apply.
if the question is asking for something that you lack expertise to answer, don't answer the question until you actually have the expertise.
feel free to research the question, apply the basic skills of critical thinking/critical reading/critical writing to the existing research, and synthesize your own answer.
but don't just take someone else's work and foist it off on someone as if that's in any way useful.
this is basic academia; if you tried to steal someone else's work and present it as your own in any university worth its salt, you'd be suspended so fast it'd make your head spin.

8:39 PM
In university I'd always been a "please exemplify" student, so for example If you reported that A said "X", so clearly believes in "this" and "that", can't I use the same reasoning besides other possible reasonings to prove that A really believes in "this" and "that"?
Thats the point, some of the historical events are so clear that mentioned expertise is not required. I don't mean feel free to answer every question. If I don't understand a fact, I can't answer it and the questioner (even a layman) will easily understand that the answer is not what he is searching for.
