10:00 PM
Dangit, now my butt hurts from sitting here and trying to churn through all ~80 pages of unanswered questions.

@jrg On AD or AU?

jrg
AD.

Ah. I suppose I need to do that too, but I've run out of votes :-(

jrg
(duh, an iPad is serious business and totally makes me want to be an Apple "fanboy", if only for a weekend. :P)
@daviesgeek Unless you're running Lion, don't bother.
90% of the questions are about Lion.

@jrg I am :-) I was so happy to upgrade because I could finally answer Lion questions

jrg
10:02 PM
Or really off-the wall jailbreak stuff.

@daviesgeek Those are my least favourite, amending minor styles, not even typos. The whole How To/How do I thing.

This really irks me: apple.stackexchange.com/q/46831/7833 Look at the vote count.

jrg
@daviesgeek Have fun!

@stuffe That was a particularly bad edit of mine.
@jrg The weird thing is that 12 of my answers before I upgraded were about Lion and they were accepted answers.

jrg
Gotta love those "No idea if it'll work, but let me try this anyway...." answers

10:05 PM
Back to my question: apple.stackexchange.com/q/46831/7833 If people think it's a bad question and you can just search for an app, WHY AREN'T THERE ANSWERS?
@jrg Yup. Love those!

There are a lot of abandoned questions, but 1 rep users, they will never come back, but the questions won;t die either. We need a clear up challenge that isn;t for prizes when this is over, that will sort the men from the boys.

@stuffe YES, PLEASE!!!!!!!!
@jrg What's up with this comment?
@NathanGreenstein Hey!!

Hey!
What's going on?

@NathanGreenstein Not much. How 'bout you?

@daviesgeek you're lucky my vote is locked in. I would have taken it away. I don't like that question. Especially if it's not CW.

Evening lads.

@IanC I would have like to have seen it be CW, but it was up to the moderator. :-)
Evening @jaberg (or afternoon if you are on the other side of the US)

jrg
@daviesgeek Exactly that? I mean, there really is no way to tell based off the serial number.

@jrg That's what the asker wants to know.
So, if the answer is no, then add an answer.

jrg
There are some kinds of answers that people hate - and "no" is one of them. :P

10:10 PM
@NathanGreenstein Dang, you cleared out a whole bunch of junk on that question: apple.stackexchange.com/posts/32649/revisions

I am in the middle of the States.

@daviesgeek It was pretty localized and kind of ranty, so I took out a lot.

@jaberg Oh, that's true.
@NathanGreenstein A lot

jrg
Thats not even the same question @NathanGreenstein. :)

Nice work Nathan. Just skimmed, but that looks like a righteous edit.

10:12 PM
@jrg The problem trying to be solved is the same, just framed differently.

@jaberg grunt

@stuffe Thanks for the answer!

Ugh.

@stuffe However, Six-to-Eight isn't an iPad app

@daviesgeek Just throwing you a bone to make up for pretending not to star that comment earlier ;)

I didn't read the question, just saw the comment about iOS apps ;)

@stuffe Oh thanks!! (sarcasm)

Don't throw him any bones. There's enough terrier in him as it is.

@stuffe And neither is StackMate

@daviesgeek But seriously, My bad, I thought you wanted native iOS, and didn't take in the iPad bit.

10:14 PM
@jaberg LOL
@stuffe That's okay. (but you really should read the question). Check out the linked question in my question.

I never even thought about an SE app. I suffer with the mobile web.

@stuffe Post Stackmate on the question I linked to

@daviesgeek You're outta look if you want iPad.
If it helps, I can provide a "none" answer

i like six-to-eight, i just wish you could post answers from it. it's fast and the UI is pretty slick.

@daviesgeek I'll let you, you need the rep for the comp.

10:16 PM
@stuffe If that's the answer, then yes, by all means, post it.

I'm suffering right now in fact, mojito in hand.

@IanC I liked it. Then I decided the mobile view was better.

@stuffe Thanks!
Oh. the question was asking for AD specific answer. As in, access AD from your iOS device. So, I did what you did, @stuffe...didn't read the question.. :-)
Dang! Another downvote on that question....

@daviesgeek may be the only regular to emerge from the contest with less rep than he started with.

A: What different Stack Exchange apps are available for the iPad?

stuffeI have used 2 for iPhone, and have eventually gone back to the Mobile View as it was considerably better than either: Six-to-Eight: Free. Worked OK, but you can;t actually log in, you can merely track yourself as a user without being able to actually do anything StackMate: $.99. Looked great, b...

@daviesgeek pong ;)

jrg
10:24 PM
@daviesgeek did I miss something, are you rep whoring, or did you get an iPad? ;)
(or are you just gambling that you might possibly get one in the contest? ;) )

@stuffe What's up with LawStack? Is that actually an SE app?

jrg
@daviesgeek Question for you: Would a inbox notification app that integrated with say, boxcar "count" for your question?

@jrg My grandfather gave us an iPad 1.
@jrg Yes I believe so.

jrg
@daviesgeek oh, so its a legitimate question. (was just curious)

Yes, it is a legitimate question. (though if I'd thought of it before, I would have asked it)

jrg
10:35 PM
Ok, I'll go get to work on getting that "usable" for the common joe (since it currently is a hack put together in one night, isn't very pretty and requires a server.)

@NathanGreenstein No, my mistake

@jrg Cool!

jrg
Ahg screw it, I'll just post it as-is, and then update with a proper stackapps post at a later date.

It's an iOS app that you're working on?

@daviesgeek Check out your question stats: +6 -5
That's dividing opinion right there.

jrg
10:39 PM
Not an iOS app, but rather a service that integrates with one.

@jrg Interesting...can't wait to see it.
@stuffe I know!! And I'm a bit upset with it too. What's so wrong about my question?

it is a bit "let me google that for you"

Back to my question: http://apple.stackexchange.com/q/46831/7833 If people think it's a bad question and you can just search for an app, WHY AREN'T THERE ANSWERS?

Without wanting to sound like a Rep whore, I believe I am right in saying that there are only 2 apps, the first answer nails one of them, I got them both. Case closed
You won't get any more, there are no more.

That was before you posted your answer

10:45 PM
@daviesgeek Yes, that was why I called it the first one.

One more upvote puts me above @JasonSalaz in the alltimes.
2

@stuffe Darn, I wish I could give it to you, but I am out of votes.

@stuffe you're welcome

I'm not fishing, but thanks
2
@IanC Cheers - and sorry, @JasonSalaz...

10:55 PM
@stuffe what did you win?

11 now, top 10 by Monday with a fair wind

@stuffe You deserve it, and I don't always catch everything that comes my way. They would be real votes.

@IanC "kudos"

@stuffe link?

@IanC LOL!! You helped him, but you don't know what you did.......LOL ;-)

@daviesgeek if i helped him win an ipad at my expense i don't really care.
@stuffe neato.

I doubt that the 2vote answers are where it's at when it comes to the crunch.

Hi @daniell

hi

@stuffe It takes a bit for the leagues to update

All big scalps from here in, you're only a thousand points clear of my sites ;)

10:59 PM
The leagues update at midnight GMT
once daily

@DanielL That's why

I think the all time goes faster than that.

oh boy: I'm #1 this week. stackexchange.com/leagues/46/week/apple

Current value isonly 3 hours old for my all time score
(but I admit, I thought it was realtime)

11:01 PM
@IanC Takes a big score to best Bmike or Gentmatt

My duty is done for today :)
Good night guys!

Good night

@stuffe yea or Martin. The Untouchables.

@gentmatt Good night

11:02 PM
@gentmatt 'night

I made the top ten once, then was bumped out, then made it back in.

@DanielL Lucky! I was lucky enough to make it into the top 20

You attribute a lot to luck, @daviesgeek

You'll be top 10 in a few months

I'm #15 this week. Cool!

11:03 PM
Remember I only overtook you this month

@DanielL You know what I mean.........
@stuffe I know!!

I used to obsess over those. I haven't looked at them in a while, though, and am much happier for it.

I accumulate rep waaay slower than anyone else because I don't spend all my time on Ask Different. :-P

@DanielL an astute observation

You'll catch my slipstream and pile through shortly. The top 20 has quite a large number of dormant users.

11:04 PM
It does

I've also conceded that it's unlikely that I'll win an iPad now, so I'm far less stressed about the contest.

@DanielL likewise.

@DanielL I'd rather have fun looking at the leagues than the comp scores :)

@daviesgeek actually, I don't.

@DanielL Same here, though I started looking at them again.

11:05 PM
@stuffe amen to that.
@daviesgeek Well, I just did too. But I used to check in with them all the time.
They no longer validate my existence :-)

@DanielL What I mean is that you are lucky for getting up there in the rep. If it doesn't make sense, ignore everything that I'm saying, b/c tone of voice doesn't come over well via chat.

@daviesgeek I spend too much of my time here, although to be fair, I check in frequently, but often not for that long. I just have a messed up sleep schedule, so I often appear to have activity around the clock.

@DanielL Yah. The only thing I see now is the little "Top 2% this quarter" thingy next to my rep.
@DanielL I see. I check in quite often too, but not to answer questions, just to check my inbox and the suggested edits queue.
Non sequitur: How do you beta test iOS apps?

@daviesgeek I don't. :-p

@daviesgeek you get issued a certificate that enables your iDevice to run the app for some period of time.

11:09 PM
@DanielL I wasn't necessarily addressing you, but everyone in general.

I know. I was answering. Utterly unhelpfully, but an answer.

@IanC How exactly does that work? Do you have to be a developer?
@DanielL :-)

@daviesgeek yes.

@daviesgeek Sometimes I act like a wise moderator. Sometimes I act like an immature smart aleck. I really do try not to handle flags in the second mode.

@IanC A paid dev account?

11:10 PM
I knew that would get starred.
2

@daviesgeek there is no other kind of dev account with Apple.

@IanC Actually there is, you can be registered for the dev sites, it's only the dev programs that cost.

@stuffe that's doesn't give you the ability to issue certs though.

You can still dev and get access to the knowedgebase and generic tools and information, download xCode etc, without being on a program
True, that needs an iOS Dev Program membership, but it doesn;t mean you are not a dev if you don;t pay. Just limits you. More in iOS case than Mac OS

I see...
So can you beta test an app without being a paid dev?

11:17 PM
Yes. Look at an app called TestFlight
I think devs get like 100 codes that they can send which allows people to provision a copy of the app directly from the dev rather than the app store.
It is a pain to implement tho, although the testflight app i mentioned streamlines the process.

@stuffe Hmm...interesting.

@daviesgeek yes. But you can't get people to beta your apps. AFAIK you can't even move your own apps to your own iDevice without paying.
@stuffe this is true.

All very interesting, since I have virtually no knowledge of the dev program

@stuffe You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.

@CajunLuke The site's a better place for them. Great edits!

11:31 PM
@CajunLuke Some people flag a ton, some answer loads, some edit loads. It's like a whole ecosystem, someone has to fulfill each role.

@DanielL It started as "this grammar bothers me" and became "I like editing". The grammar still bothers me, though.

I notice a lot that my answers get edited by you, often within minutes. I've never reverted one.

@stuffe I flag and answer, too. I wish I still got reputation for edits like I did before I was 2k+.

@stuffe that's high praise

I imagine you are heartily sick of me putting ";" in words instead of an apostrophe.

11:32 PM
@CajunLuke All good things must eventually come to an end :-)

@stuffe I'd have no problem if you did; we'd have a discussion.

I used to flag a lot. Much less so now.

@stuffe It's an easy typo, especially when you're used to C-style languages and you're hot-to-trot for semicolons.

@DanielL Not a lot of point sending a flag to yourself ;)

@stuffe Never mind, that was a blindingly obvious statement, in hindsight.

11:35 PM
Right, I'm off, big weekend of trying to ignore the site coming up :)

@stuffe have a great weekend.

jrg
@daviesgeek still around?

11:55 PM
@jrg Yes I am.
@jrg What dost thou need?
In modern English: "Why did ya ping me?"
:-)

jrg
Heh. What does ruby --version show on your Mac? (when run in a terminal)

Uno momento...

jrg
is it 1.8.7 or 1.9.x? I'm trying to decide if its even worth posting my answer (it requires 1.9.x)

ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [universal-darwin11.0]

jrg
:( thanks.

11:58 PM
Post it anyway, just say that it requires 1.9.x

jrg
Dude, everyone is going to know I'm a linux neckbeard when i post this. I tap into crontab and all sorts of very linux-y tricks. :P

So? Does it work?
