The "harmonic noise" question has received a very nice answer:
5
A: Harmonic noise introduced when using an iPhone dock extension cable connected to a mic peripheral

Adam DavisSince the A-D conversion is happening at the peripheral end, then the noise must also exist there. Without access to the device for disassembly, I can only guess at the problem, but it's likely to be due to one or more of the following: The peripheral is probably fully shielded internally from...

Please vote up.

@legospace9876 Hi Legospace9. I removed your advertisement to vote up a question that is really not at all related to this chat room. Please hang out a bit and get to know the topic here - but asking for votes on other site's chat and leaving is a bit like spam.

@jaberg Holy screenshots, Batman!

A: Pre-approve upgraded software/applications for users under parental control

jabergThere is no need to log in to individual accounts, at least with more modern versions of OS X. You can set access privileges for managed accounts from within the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences without leaving your own account. By selecting the Other tab in the Parental Control...

@DanielL It's taken on a life of its own—and moved in a completely different direction than the question originally sent us.
@gentmatt I caught that one yesterday. I'm glad someone came along who had a clue because that one had me stumped. ;)

Q: How do we keep the exciting promotion from reducing the quality of the site?

Daniel LSo the big promotion is getting far more participation than I ever expected was possible. This is a big win, and CHAOS pulled off an amazing thing here. Kudos for all your planning work! Less than a week into the contest, there are already as many people at level 2 as I expected would be there by...

@DanielL @stuffe Thank you for putting it to words.
(And had I just scrolled up one screen, I'd see we're now logrolling.)
@stuffe Forgive me:

Q: Retrieve Voice Memos from device?

MosheiOS seems to refuse to allow me to email "long" voice memos, and I'm unaware of any way to extract them from iTunes backups of my phone. How can I retrieve entire voice memos that aren't really short?

Moshe - not to pick on you, but here's an example of where you asked a question and didn't even check the user manual. We're OK with questions that lack any amount of research from occasional newcomers, but with 2 thousand plus rep, if we all just are here recreating the entire iPhone user manual by asking elementary questions and getting the answer documented here might be a reason why some are down voting your questions lately.
I'm not going to say I know the purpose of the site - since it's really in the hands of the entire community - but I do know I really like that I can come here and find the really hard to answer questions. When you ask a question and frame it with links to the user manual (since you read up on the problem before posting it) and clarified that you followed all the steps and still have a problem, that seems to get more up votes.
The new people are thankful that they learned there is a manual and it's simply that they need to connect to iTunes and look for a voice memo playlist. And the experts also get to vote it up since they don't think "GRRR - RTFM, dude"
By reframing the question - you attract votes from both the expert community and the beginner community.
No question is going to please everyone, but some questions please very few people.

@jaberg No need - that's great - thanks!

@bmike Your ambassadorial skills impress me yet again. Thank you for providing the reasonable voice to this discussion.
@stuffe Dude, I sent you to Quora. ;)

@jaberg It's OK, I've just been near asbestos - I need a shower anyway...

Unfortunately, that was the first, direct and complete answer I found.
I knew it was a file that could be edited, but I didn't have the filename or path on tap.

I may Jeopary it to get it on here to save future googlers from Quora ;)

And that would be quite appropriate.

2:49 PM
@stuffe You better be quick with our answer, there's a competition on you know. ;)

I'll ask it - you answer it. Be warned, I will expand the scope, and make you work more for it :)

@jaberg Most previous promotions have come and gone without much attention. I had no idea this one would actually generate interest.

Because: T-Shirts = Meh! / iPads != Meh!
5

Well, I needed a new T-shirt, so I was excited. P.S. It's an awesome T-shirt.

@stuffe Particularly given that, for the most part, I only wear cotton t-shirts for working on the trucks.

2:51 PM
So there.

I cocked up on the last promo
Shared the wrong stuff, if had to be your own and within a date range. Mine was out of range

I'll admit I've been stockpiling questions since the last promotion. Not based on inside information -- as a, ◆ I did get a tip off that this was coming, but had been stockpiling questions long before on the expectation that there would be some new promotion. I figured it would be for a hat or stickers or something, though, not this.
But I actually am starting to like how long this promotion runs. We'll likely max out on prizes, but it will raise the bar for what it takes to win one, and only people with sustained quality participation (i.e. the behavior we actually want to encourage) will be likely to win.
I expected we'd give out exactly 2 iPads and maybe 3 or 4 Touches.
And I have a list of names of my predicted winners.

Done! There's even some Mod editing to do if you are feeling picky about getting straight to the point ;)
Hop to it lefty.
(Bad stuffe - oneboxing or nothing in chat)

@stuffe Too much work. ;)

Damn, I edited the link by accident.

Q: How can I replace the 'Linen' that is prevalent in many Lion apps?

stuffeThere are many places where the "linen" texture is used in Lion, from the Login Window to various app backgrounds like Safari and so on. Is it possible to replace this image with something else? Let's say I have a nice hessian weave pattern from a lovely house I lived in that hasn't been decora...

3:00 PM
But you did get a "click" from me before you one-boxed. Sneaky B…

Try that again.
Unintentional. I'm not promo sharing in chat - unfair.

@stuffe I know. I'm just giving you da bidness.

I demand screenshots. With drop shadows.

Oneboxing and custom links aren't either or.

both look the same, no?
But one of them is a shared link and the other isn't.

The one-box process resolves the URLS to the end destination, check the URLS
So one-boxing removes sharing links
Which is good. Anyone not oneboxing is doing it to get a share link.

3:07 PM
So it does. Wow
Awesome!

not oneboxing makes it harder to know what is being linked, and is frankly chat room link baiting
I have resolved to either not click a non oneboxed link, or to copy and paste it and remove the user ID

@stuffe Disagree. Sometimes not one boxing is an honest mistake.
But good to know that the one box removes the user id.

links in chat do not leave chat, are only seen by existing members

Sure

@DanielL True, let's not tar everyone with the same brush, but the ratio of inline-links:oneboxes is dramatically different these last few days

3:10 PM
I'd agree that anyone who normally oneboxes and then mysteriously isn't now that the contest is going on just might be up to something.
@stuffe I hadn't noticed. Any links to offending posts?

Loads yesterday. I even did it myself.
Until I realised the implications.

Okay, it's answered. No screenshots though.
But no link to Quora (I found a more palatable source)
Might not be the total complete answer to all of your provisions, but I'll leave something for the community to grab. ;)

I'm not seeing many examples. Most people are still one-boxing.

@jaberg - Safari
@DanielL Been better today. I wil try to find a suitable transcript section

Y'all are nerds - through and through

Would we be here if we weren't?

(as I catch up on the linking minutiae )
It was meant as a serious compliment - you know when you find a group and you just smile and think - these are my kind of people

Compliment, insult -- just a true descriptive statement

Geek is a compliment. Nerd is a fightin' word. ;)

@stuffe You should use an equality test and not an assignment operator here. Also, the / should be &&.
#myPseudoCodeIsBetterThanYourPseudoCode

That's nothing, I squezzed "transperambulation of pseudo cosmic anti matter" into a question and not even had it edited out yet ;)

Q: Where can I find the gray linen texture that's used as the Lion login screen background?

EmmySMy company just updated to Lion, and I really like the gray linen texture that's used as the initial login screen background. I'd like to use it for my desktop background, but it's not one of the options in the Desktop preferences (in the Apple section, anyway.) I'm assuming the graphic exists so...

@bmike I think the two can co-exist, especially since @stuffe's goes further—but close as duplicate if you think it's warranted. FWIW, it didn't come up in the sidebar when I looked at @stuffe's question.

Not a duplicate, just helpful additional information.

@jaberg Yeah, that's looking to find a copy, presumably to use elsewhere. Mine is to replace it, there and everywhere else it may exist.

OH - I'm all for three to 5 "basically" exact questions at this point after seeing how it works on other sites and seeing as a moderator how well the system works.
For me to close as a dupe is going to be rare indeed. I'm much more likely to close as bad, too open ended than dupe.

Good afternoon @ everybody!

3:27 PM
@bmike I liked Atwood's post on that. And he's right, because an answer is only useful if a search reveals it.

or morning/evening... wherever you live :)

And too localized is becoming the highest bar to cross - there's little that hits that criteria for closing without hitting some other bar first.
Yup - easily 20% of the questions I have asked here are basically close to something that was already asked - just phrased differently - asking for a different constraint, needing another solution.

@bmike You can post that as a link to the new question by @stuffle.

Feeling Lonely @gentmatt? Hope to join you soon

@bmike I sometimes have an internal debate about which bar to use—as I said last night, I don't always know why, but I know it when I see it.

3:29 PM
@stuffe I could use some companionship ;)

@gentmatt Do you guys want a room?

Lol.
Yeah. What about Level 1, 2 and 3 chat rooms?
Just kidding :)

Well my third link was just "cleared" so it looks like I may actually join you in Level Two at some point.
Made a mistake though—I both G+'d it and tweeted it, so I don't know which resulted in the nearly instant 5 clicks.

Was that the link you just posted on Twitter?

Bad market research.
@gentmatt Actually not sure of that either, I have two posted recently and I have no way of knowing which one got the five clicks.

3:33 PM
I can chat in the level 2 room.

A: How can I replace the 'Linen' that is prevalent in many Lion apps?

jabergThe linen backdrop file is /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png You can edit that file, or replace it with a file of the same name, but be certain that the replacement file has a resolution of 72 pixels per inch or you probably ...

@jaberg Does that apply for the linen background system wide?

But Stuffe's closer to level 3 than I am.

I'll be there by midnight GMT

Did you guys (except the mods, of course) notice that one user here has been banned?

@gentmatt I have no idea. It doesn't fix it for Safari. (And I can't find a link to where that nugget is buried).

3:34 PM
I just found out.
@jaberg Do you mind if I edit you post? I don't like posting code using ``.

@stuffe That linen question is a winner in the vote world. And without a screenshot. Imagine.

@jaberg Indeed - that feeling is very strong in us as humans.

It looks a bit strange.

@gentmatt Yes, I do mind. I chose that method deliberately.

@jaberg Enlighten me!

3:36 PM
Isn't that what ` ` is for?

If you have another reason to make the edit, have at it. But messing with my formatting because you don't like it isn't cool.

I even thought of a better title 'Rinsing the Linen on Lion'

@stuffe How about Bleaching ;)

@jaberg Good general principle

Doesn't flow the same
Code highlighting is for programmers. We aren't. I personally co-opted it to mean file names and quoted screen text.

3:38 PM
@jaberg Well, I'm a formatting freak. When you post code like this, words break.

I use the code formatting for file paths because that's what you would type into a terminal to get to that path.

enBackgro
undColor.png
But that's just my 2c.

@jaberg I blame it in the transperambulation of pseudo cosmic anti matter
@gentmatt You lost me 2 messages back

There's nothing pseudo cosmic about that antimatter. It's the real thing, baby.

@gentmatt I think that's a small price to pay for clarity and readability, but I recognize that our views differ.

3:39 PM
No prob.

@stuffe He's pointing out that with back tics, there's an awkward line break in the middle of a word.

I use LaTeX for exactly such reasons.

Actually, I DEMAND a screenshot of a nice hessian weave in Reading List ;)
@DanielL I never noticed that at all

@stuffe Sod off.

We're just blowing up the bubble right now, aren't we :)

3:41 PM
I managed to work way too many screenshots (all legit) into my parental controls morphed into quarantine answer.

@gentmatt I get you now. But it still copies and pastes OK, so I'm cool.

With unreticulated splines, though, I doubt the meta-parser will be able to properly pre-package the green semimorphs.

@DanielL I have no idea what that sentence means.

It's all about the transperambulation of pseudo cosmic anti matter
You connect it to the flange rebate shaft.

@stuffe same here
My dictionary is not really helpful. Even if I just click on parts of the words.

3:45 PM
/usr/local/bin/gibberish -pseodoScientific > PostToStackExchangeChat.pl
@gentmatt I'm making up nonsense.
The whole conversation was getting a little too surreal, so I kicked it up a notch.

I think I'm slowing understanding.

@gentmatt At some point ANY path that is sufficiently long will break onscreen, code formatted or not. So your fix might work for this particular path, but isn't a cure-all for the problem.

That's the thing about foreign humor and jokes. You never really understand them the first time.

You're doing remarkably well.
I know a grand total of one joke in French.
Ou se trouve le canard? Au coin!
And my attempt at math jokes wasn't exactly successful.

@DanielL That sure let the air out of the room

3:48 PM
I have a promising future as a sit-down comic. I start telling jokes, and everyone yells at me to sit down.

@jaberg Well, actually there three formatting "problems". 1) line break 2) The white space in-between two lines (change of color) 3) the white adds unnecessary space
But I don't want to talk about this anymore. I feel like I'm being pedantic....

That's what we're here for :-)

@gentmatt I will argue in favor of white space until you beg for mercy. ;)

Let's change the topic...

OK, new topic: What ever happened to the Topic of the Day?

3:51 PM
But I will grant that I wish the CSS (is that the right term) for code format changed only the font, not the background.

@jaberg Ok.
@DanielL A user got banned for "voting irregularities" .

That's why we stopped the topic of the day?

@gentmatt Heck, in Chicago we used to call that guy Mr. Mayor.

I don't know if I should post the name. But sooner or later everybody will find out. #streisandeffect

Or governor...

3:52 PM
@DanielL Hey now, Jim Thompson was my next-door neighbor (when I was in the first grade).

@DanielL We had one once, but the bit you screw in fell out and got lost

Really? Is there such thing?

Is there such thing as what?

Actually I'm wrong on that. My neighbor was Jim Edgar, Thompson's successor.

@DanielL voting irregularities in (US) politics

3:54 PM
I had a really odd downvote on an ancient post today. When I looked later, it had changed and said "user removed"
I've quite like to know who it was, and if it was promotion related. I don't THINK it was unless he/she was thick, because that answer was too old to qualify, but still.

In the United States? Sure. The former governor of Illinois just checked into jail for a 14 year term for trying to sell a Senate seat to the highest bidder.

@stuffe He/She was promoted to level 1 already.
@DanielL Wow. That's insane! I didn't hear about that in the news.

@gentmatt Out with it.

I'd like to think it isn't common. But sure, it happens.

I know, it's in the US, but such things would come up in the German news as well.

3:56 PM
@DanielL Interesting factoid, the Senate seat in question was the one vacated by Obama.

Yep

It was vacant precisely because he was elected president.

@gentmatt Really? Hmm. Let that be a warning I suppose!

I figured you knew, I was actually supplying the factoid for the benefit of our overseas friends.

3:58 PM
I know. I was expanding on it to look smarter than I really am.

@DanielL how does one do this (onebox) in chat? What is that actually, and if its not putting in questions as nice links with tags and such, how does one do that?

@DanielL The German President had to resign due to "beneficial exception" (<- google translate) This just happened a few weeks ago.

Ah, not banned - "This account is temporarily suspended for voting irregularities. The suspension period ends in 6 days. "

Paste a URL as your post (and nothing else). Some URLs will get rendered as OneBoxes.

Sock puppeting I guess

3:58 PM
@stuffe Yeah, sorry for my wording.

The one who unupvoted me says "removed" not suspended
Still, 6 days still leaves a week of activity to finish the competition in

Well, I've got to go to work. Good morning, afternoon, evening, and night. The sun never sets on the Stack Exchange Empire.

It's said that the positive promotion for the site has such side effects.

@gentmatt How did you find out?

4:09 PM
@stuffe He was the first one to get to level 1. So I was wondering "why" he hasn't made level 2 yet. He's been quite active recently.
I have followed the link from the StackApple account on twitter. They tweeted that he was the first to make level 1.

I missed that tweet
But he's close to L3, and although his profile seems set to 1 rep, his entry scores still seem to stand
I wouldn't welcome anyone who has been suspended actually winning anything

I wonder if it really was sock puppet voting.
I've been on meta.stackoverflow an I believe to have read that such behavior would be marked as such.

Well it was one of 3 things that I can envisage
1) consistently only voting for a buddy
2) consistently only being voted for by a buddy (or sock puppet)
3) Consistently downvoting other entrants.
So I am not sure, given that I had had votes removed late last night that were cast by a user who has since been "removed" apple.stackexchange.com/users/9495/stuffe?tab=reputation

You can also get suspended for consistent low-quality posts.
97
Q: Avoid the Streisand Effect - be clear about the reason when suspending an account

Shog9This sort of thing has happened a few times now... "Hey, did you see? User X was boxed!" "User X? Why?" "I donno... Maybe he... " (wild speculation ensues. waffles are blamed.) It's generally quite easy to notice when a user gets thrown in The Penalty Box. You see the tell-tale 1 when...

2
Q: "This account is temporarily suspended for voting irregularities."

genesisI know that there are several questions for this, but this is user-specific, so please do not consider this question as EXACT duplicate. User Ham and Bacon was suspended, for "voting irregularities". What does it mean. Did he voted up himself with another account or is that because of his questi...

@stuffe I guess it was a sock puppet that gave the vote.
Michiel can still receive votes. Therefore I'll assume that his votes were not removed.

It's nice to see that sock puppets are getting suspended. One thing that I don't understand is why answers to closed questions don't count for the contest.
If it was a high quality answer, and people upvoted it, shouldn't it count?

4:19 PM
Not something I had come across.

I came across this...

I presume because if the questions wasn't up to scratch, then the answers are largely pointless

@AndrewLarsson "All of your posts must be in line with the general Ask Different rules."
This is part of the contest rules defined here: thenewipadishere.com

They might answer the question, but it the question wasn't sutiable the answer isn't worth much.

Ah, makes sense.

4:21 PM
E.g. List demanding questions are off-topic.
There have been some in the beginning to AD.SE, but they are wikis now so that users don't get rep for posts.

I see.
What exactly is the main goal of the contest? Is it to draw more users to this site, or is to catalyze activity?

No-one knows

@AndrewLarsson KyleColin said, it's to promote the site.
That's why you got to share links.
Several users here would surely meet the required votes without the content in mind. But most of them (at least me) would not share posts with their peers that much.
*contest

Who exactly is hosting the contest? StackExchange?

Probably.

4:35 PM
StackExchange seems to me like an omnipotent higher being. Nobody can tell you who they are or what their agenda is, but they're still there pasting a giant iPad in the background of the site.
3

@AndrewLarsson So I see you were a member way before the contest, how are you finding it today? Did you come back after the promotion started?
It's good to see a new user in Chat. Most of them seem to stick to Q&A, rare to see anyone in Chat, rarer still to see one in META

I found out about the contest the day it happened, but didn't pay much attention to it.
day it was posted*
I try to come to AskDifferent everyday, but I don't answer questions every time I come.

There's no agreement what the aims of the contest are. Obviously it's a promotion, and promoting the site is one of the aims, but it could also be to get people to use it better, hence the requirement for a few higher voted scores to advance into L2 and 3.
I would rather existing users who were here before the promotion were given the carrot, because I think a tighter community of good answerers is perhaps more beneficial to the aims of the site than a larger number of askers, and most of the new guys seem anecdotally at least to be largely askers
2

@AndrewLarsson Malt does more than Milton can, to justify the ways of Stack Exchange to man

@j
@jaberg Where'd you pull that out from?
You just replaced God with StackExchange? I like it.

4:48 PM
It's a misappropriation of an A.E. Houseman quote (replace SE with God) that I first saw in a Spenser novel.

stuffe 34 °C - The commonly accepted average human skin temperature 33.6 °C - The maximum temperature of your iPad 3 when you thrash it's brains out A problem? You decide... ;)

5:18 PM
How do you get the "custom link under the answer" that the contest rules talk about?
I can't find anything on my answers that give me a link.

At the bottom of any question or answer is a row of LINK | EDIT | FLAG links etc, may have others in there like CLOSE | RE-OPEN etc
Or hit the twitter icon
Don't click these - just look at the URLS
My user ID is 9495
So the normal url = apple.se.com/questionID/question title
and the personalised one = apple.se.com/questionID/userID which then forwards to the above

I don't know why I overlooked the link button... Thanks!
I guess I'm just blind and looking for something similar to the Twitter/FB/G+ icons next to the questions.

When sharing, if sharing for the purposes if having it count for the promotion, use the personalised url, there is no need to specifically use the twitter URL which adds further tracking detail to the personalised link (?stw=1 or similar)

Okay, cool.

Not sure. Someone did it a lot earlier tho

Post tags? What do you mean?

@AndrewLarsson I'd like to show, but i do not know how...
They appear like real tags that you can click.

@KyleCronin Do we really need a tag?

That take you to a page with questions that have those tags?

Andrew LarssonThe short answer is no, not yet. The long answer is because the only (reliable/legal) way to get Siri on a non-iPhone 4S device is to use a package found in Cydia called Spire. This requires you to have access to a Siri proxy server or an iPhone 4S for the tokens. However, @chpwn (the developer o...

@AndrewLarsson I was considering Spire.
On our iPad
but i uninstalled Cydia
Hey @DanielL
How goes it?
Ack! I need to leave. Goodbye @all.

@jaberg Truly awesome. What Houseman poem does that come from?

The iPad and the heat issue. I'm taking a critical standpoint:

A: How significant is the new iPad's heat issue?

gentmattIt's on the borderline. Various reports have been published already. While most blogs say the temperatures are normal - if not - to be expected due to the powerful graphics of the A5X, I like to take a more critical standpoint. Apple's recommendation for battery temperatures Your iPad is de...

@jaberg I'm half asian. I love everything that is hot and spicy! I'd even eat popcorn with tabasco sauce.

@gentmatt Crystal is in the general Tobasco family. But if you can get your hands on a bottle of *Matouk's Calypso Sauce*…

@jaberg I did not know. I'm impressed!

@gentmatt How significant is Matouk's Calypso Sauce's heat issue?

@DanielL Verse LXII of A Shropshire Lad (Jeff says as if he's actually read the entire thing)

@DanielL Once you burn your tongue, it does not matter. You just keep eating... :)
Actually: As a sauce everything is less hot. You got to eat the fresh vegetable. Then you'll go to hell.

@DanielL Hot, but it's an eating sauce, meaning eventually you apply it like Ketchup, not a kicker sauce (like Dave's Insanity) designed to be used by the drop.
Matouk's is a Scotch Bonnet based sauce. And its sweeter than Tobasco, with an easier initial attack but a whole lot more heat behind it in the end.
Reminds me I need to grab a bottle to take the Hack Factory tonight. :)

"Terence, this is stupid stuff:
You eat your victuals fast enough;
There can't be much amiss, 'tis clear,
To see the rate you drink your beer.
But oh, good Lord, the verse you make,
It gives a chap the belly-ache.
The cow, the old cow, she is dead;
It sleeps well, the horned head:
We poor lads, 'tis our turn now
To hear such tunes as killed the cow.
Pretty friendship 'tis to rhyme
Your friends to death before their time
Moping melancholy mad:
Come, pipe a tune to dance to, lad."

Why, if 'tis dancing you would be,
What a verse.

That price is high. I generally buy a case and it goes down to about $2.50 a bottle.

I'm partial to Cholula myself, but wouldn't mind branching out.

Personally, I like this on my pizza:
I haven't been a real fan of hot sauce, because most of them just taste like vinegar to me.

@AndrewLarsson Good stuff indeed :)

@AndrewLarsson Tobasco/Crystal/Franks are vinegar based. Matouks is more of a sugary sauce, but don't let that fool you.

It's always funny to watch your friends pick up the bottle and sprinkle some on, too. I'm nearly immune to the heat, but they aren't, so I get quite a giggle when they take their first bite.

Looks like I'm down to my last seven bottles in the Sauce Cellar—time to order another case! ;)
A million scovilles. That'll wake you up. ;)
@DanielL I use that on eggs sometimes. It's a sauce I often pick up while traveling—easy to find in most grocery stores.
I'm about to cap out.

@jaberg again?!?

6:44 PM
Yup.
At least it's later in the day this time—won't lose as many points on the good answers I have in play.
I can't believe I just said that. Me. Mister It's not about Reputation.
