As for the too localized theme, how about them apples?
8
Q: Which new Mac purchasers get free upgrades to 10.7?

eQuiNoX__I recently bought a Mac and I wish I had waited longer as I then could have bought one with OS X 10.7. Does Apple offer free upgrades across versions? That is, I'm currently on 10.6; is there any way I could upgrade to 10.7 for free?

So these are helpful questions at the time they're asked, but they don't age well. Is that it?
Is it your policy to not help the many users who could benefit from the answer during the initial window when they're asked?

@ArgyleMarionette this is more or less it, I'd say
especially the questions about the free upgrades - such windows of time have long passed

@ArgyleMarionette Yes - there was a need for them in that transition period, but does the archival value of them make it worth keeping them around. Someone looking for upgrade advice now would likely be confused without them being edited to specifically state the limited time during which the Lion up to date program ran.

Sure. You didn't close them as too localized then ("in that transition period"). Was that policy, oversight, or "selective oversight" where if pushed, you would have closed them then, but you were content enough to leave them open to help people, but really they were too localized?
Are you two diamond moderators?
As in, did I waste my time and yours flagging that post if we're here talking about it?

@ArgyleMarionette nope

12:11 AM
@ArgyleMarionette some questions get more localized over time, and there can be a bit of deferring closing/deleting if it serves a greater good

Helpful. Thanks.

@ArgyleMarionette Always flag - it provides a structure for acting on the flag. Plus you'll see your helpful ratio and have a history of what the mod du jour felt of the various things you felt needed a moderator to look at.

Can diamond moderators act when there isn't a flag, or does someone need to flag first?

@ArgyleMarionette Moderator actions are binding, so if they go to the linked question and close them, boom - it's closed. Same end result - just that they get at the question from a link and the main view - not the flagging interface where all flagged questions are placed.

12:26 AM
One more suggested edit to field in the next 19 hours, 33 minutes, and 25 seconds.

12:47 AM
@bmike a post that's merged is effectively closed

1:05 AM
@KyleCronin but can't be deleted.....

hm, I wasn't aware of that
deleted

awesome power, there ;-)

indeed :)

6 hours later…
6:43 AM
13 hours, 16 minutes, 48 seconds until the moderator election ends.
@JasonSalaz Love that Jason. Soooo cool!
@JasonSalaz A late congratulations....
@KyleCronin So, had a question...how do you do the podcast? I know you use Skype, but how does the whole thing get recorded?

@daviesgeek we each record our audio individually, I also record the entire call on my end and use it to sync up the individual tracks
I use Adobe Audition to edit - doing some basic noise reduction and leveling, as well as cutting out stuff
then I pass it through Levelator, use iTunes to add the podcast ID3 info, and upload it
I've been talking about doing a special edition of the podcast to talk about how the podcast is made
hopefully we'll do that one day

8 hours later…
3:14 PM
Would a podcast about the podcast be a metapodcast? Podmeta? Metacast?
<5 hours...
2
What would the blogpost abut the podcast about the podcast be?
Metablogcast?

@stuffe not that anyone is watching

Nice of it to end at a sensible UK time, just to make up for the Town Hall chat timing :)
Just time to get home, put the youngster to bed, eat tea and put my feet up and hit CTRL-R

4:02 PM
Woot!
(So if I do get elected, I accomplished it beforehand. And if I don't, I still accomplished it as a non-moderator.)
@stuffe 3 hours
and counting
Good luck, all. I wish I could have voted for four of us.
If I end up disappointed that I don't win, I expect I'll at least be happy that three great people did.
@stuffe No, 4 hours... the countdown on the site is a little overanxious, and rounds down.

@Daniel how do you hunt down edit approvals without mod tools? I stumbled across a few, I don't actually know how to purposefully find them

Can I say, that I LOVE sites that have a clean and simple URL scheme?

First answers/questions/late answers/low quality?

edits are in there too eventually

What about a good question from an established user that someone has improved?
Ah, a rep thing for reviews then.

4:17 PM
I don't recall what the level is. Daniel would know much better than I.

Can't see it listed either here or here
2000 Edit other people’s posts, vote to approve or reject suggested edits

that's probably where it comes with.

I'm 3.5k ish, but cannot see suggested edits in review list

Can you not see them, or are there just none?
ah, ok, you didn't list it.
Yeah, eventually suggested edits will be in there, perhaps 5K

?

4:27 PM
maybe the familiarity I'm trying to recall was people posting about the fact that it isn't documented in /privileges

maybe you need strunk & white or something
which, if I say so myself, is a weird name for a badge?

privileges are not bound to badges, only rep
The Elements of Style (1918), also known as Strunk & White, by William Strunk, Jr. and E. B. White, is a prescriptive American English writing style guide comprising eight "elementary rules of usage", ten "elementary principles of composition", "a few matters of form", a list of forty-nine "words and expressions commonly misused", and a list of fifty-seven "words often misspelled". In 2011, Time magazine listed the writing style-guide as one of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923. Can you see any listed right now? Is the category only listed when some are needed to be actioned?
@JasonSalaz Ahh, a foreign book ;)

I can see it, there are none listed.

@JasonSalaz In a foreign language too ;)

4:29 PM
ha
Don't worry, I didn't know of it either.

Q: Access to some moderator tools should be linked to flag weight or edits

DanielSo users with 10K reputation get access to moderator tools. And now 5K reputation gives you access to the queue of suggested edits to review. And absolutely, high reputation users give so much to this site, and it is wonderful they get access to tools to keep it in order. The decision to spread o...

should, yes. but are not, currently.

Hardle canon, just a Meta Question, but interesting that it's not in the formal list of priveleges (if indeed it is correct)
I'm not digging up the question, it's just the only place I can see where a specific 5000 privelege is required to see the edit queue

right
and none other than Daniel posted it, I'm sure you notice.
And of course, this topic has been brought up in chat before.

Yeah, funny how that happens.

4:36 PM
;)

I answered a question about Safari tabs reloading, and remembered what I thought was a duplicate. I found it, it was similar (how do I stop it, rather than why is is doing it) and after linking realised I had linked to my own answer...
3:22....

nice abrupt change of topics :D
I can't believe wall street closes in 3:19 as well
That closing bell just means so much today.

Good day gents.

hi
@jagerg only 3:16 left to vote for me ;)
Me and @Daniel
Soon, all mods will be Dan or Daniel
That will be the law...
@bmike will simply have to change his name.

My vote was cast a couple of days ago. ;)

4:44 PM
or, more likely given his awsome powers, just reveal that Dan is his middle name anyways ;)

I think @bmike has a tenth dan black belt in tech support.
2

There you go. Plus he is a magpie, so black in other respects.
clearly the dark arts of mod'dom are strong in the Dans
And, clearly we need 10 mods, all called Dan
And, clearly we need 10 mods, all called Dan

So long as they're all backwards and soft.

Say Nathan with a bunged up nose, you get Nadan, which is Dan both ways.
2

Ouch.

4:49 PM
Ergo, I think we are all agreed, @KyleCronin is an IMPOSTER!

Must be an algorithm we can apply.

@stuffe wtf X'D
I am so glad time and date dot com's counter actually has a natural language string now, and not just the stacked lengths.
Honestly, when you generate a countdown, who wants it in a single unit?
e.g.
0 days
3 hours
188 minutes
11320 seconds
vs. It is 0 days, 3 hours, 8 minutes, 32 seconds

Hmmm, there's no room for a Jason in the New World Order of Dans. You have 3 hours 7 minutes to change

Are all sites badges the same?

4:53 PM
besides the tag badges, yes
OpenSTV costs now?

sneaky

Tag badges? What's the difference?

Oh, I never saw those. Can they be customised? I see there is a 1:1 mapping of names

4:58 PM
no
According to bmike, they're automatically generated/given whenever a certain threshold is hit.

now it's 3 hours.

yup

Shame
a Magpie badge would be cool.
2
Maybe all CWs should be tagged Magpie

ha
hard to meaningfully quantify trivia though.

Is there a way to search for just CW questions?
If not, I just solved it...

5:00 PM
wiki:1

Bah! :(

Leave the search box blank and press enter. Alternatively: apple.stackexchange.com/search?q=

@JasonSalaz wiki:1

(see Advanced Super Ninja Search Options)

5:01 PM
there you go again Kyle, making yourself look like a fool
:>

Advanced Super Magpie Search Options?

Magpie Advanced Super Search makes for a more interesting acronym.

ASMSO -> MASS
Or maybe MAS Search

Or just Magpie A__

5:08 PM
*M*agpie *A*sk *D*ifferent *A*dvanced *M*eta *S*earch
Hmmm, no italics

chat's markdown parser is pretty terrible

LOL
You win.

Why did I just get a flag notification for Ask Ubuntu?
Huh
10K network wide rep gets you chat moderation capability. That's... exciting.
2
for everything

It's all kicking off in Chat Ubuntu
(and I am now resisting finishing off their new acronym...)

LOL
It would seem to support my suspicion that Ubuntu fans are unable to carry out a civilized discussion. ;)

5:19 PM
Wow, is everyone just waiting for the election to end?
@JasonSalaz Cool

@daviesgeek Well, yeah.

I'm bringing icecream in approx 2:48...

by the way, I don't think the results are immediately available after the election

in case we have any last minute swingers, or hanging chads.

so we're probably in for some more waiting

5:20 PM
Too bad.
@KyleCronin How long before the mods are announced?

I announced the mods last year.

@KyleCronin How many total votes we up to? 51 total last time if I recall you saying correctly

@daviesgeek it varies

Q: 2011 Community Moderator Election

CommunityThe 2011 Community Moderator Election is now underway! Community moderator elections have three phases: Nomination phase Primary phase Election phase Most elections take between two and three weeks, but this depends how many candidates there are. Please visit the official election page at ...

@stuffe you guys don't see the total votes on apple.stackexchange.com/election ?

5:20 PM
0
A: 2011 Community Moderator Election

Jason SalazBTW, Winners were: Enjoy the diamonds!

85 as of now

booooo
No, we can't see vote numbers, Kyle.

@KyleCronin Can only you see that?

@daviesgeek apparently

er, no..

5:21 PM
@KyleCronin Odd.

for the first election 328 voters were eligible, 81 visited the election, and 51 voted
so far, this election 1,107 voters were eligible, 427 visited the site during the election, 144 visited the election page, and 85 voted

Kyle and Nathan, and SE staff can see it.

And this year??

In essence, diamonds.

@JasonSalaz There are 83 Stack Exchange sites. If you have at least 1718 rep on one site, then create accounts on the other 83, you get 10K network status. And take over the world (maniacal laugh).
2

5:22 PM
3X the number of eligible voters, but only 66% more votes than last time

@Daniel tempting...!

And then you start getting network wide chat flags. Ugggggh.
Imagine my surprise when I click this new corner indicator, and a silly cat gif pops up.

That would be a useful way to spend the next hour or so.

@JasonSalaz So you're saying you don't want to be a moderator? And that you're withdrawing from the election? Quick, tell Rebecca!

5:24 PM
@Daniel LOL

So much election sniping going on. It's like the republican debates in here.

Actually, I'd be very very disappointed if that happened.

You could run on a remove this unusual mod privelege card by simply posting and flagging a thousand magpie pictures for the knitting/zen car mechanics/keep fit cookery mods...

And considering how crazy some of it is (I'm staring at you @stuffe), it's exactly like the Republican debates.

@JasonSalaz We're just nervous.

5:25 PM
Oh believe me, I am too.

Wouldn't have guessed :-)

I mean, come on, this is my second election.

It's not like you haven't wanted this since, oh, forever.
Or what you said.

Exactly.

@JasonSalaz I blame my highly localised sense of humour. You should vote to close me.

5:26 PM
Hey @jaberg, how do you know about the *n*th dan system? Do you have Martial Arts experience?

I certainly hope Jason doesn't become the Susan Lucci of AD.

Bah, stupid stupid stupid stupid chat parser.

Experience yes. But nowhere near that level.

The beauty of Markdown is that even when it doesn't render, it still communicates meaning.

I wouldn't want to have a "line of hair care products, perfumes, lingerie and skin care" named after me either.

5:27 PM
My last sensei (in Iaido) took a look at at a kata I was working at and pronounced *You're improving. Maybe in 10 or twenty years…"

hahahahahha ouch

@jaberg Which is what none of us want to hear as the election outcome.

+1
@jaberg If you have an iOS device, there are some very nifty Japanese Language apps. iKana, iKanji, and umm... a speech tutor whose name is currently escaping me. I know 'mirai' is the company name.

Jason, if you don't get it this time around I'll rally for an "Always a Bridesmaid" badge for ya, ;)

I'm sure there are tons more now.
@jaberg ouch :/.
You guys are brutal :P.

5:31 PM
Dude, this is the kinder, gentler internet.

Tell that to Gawker.
Or Tech Crunch (+alumni).
What is that new news site? Pando Daily?

What other elections are due today? We could raid their chat rooms and compare

Gawker is actually blocked via my hostfile.

(hahahah whoops)

Yes, pando
err pando

5:32 PM
@stuffe elections.stackexchange.com None due that I'm aware of. But that's a great reference site.

Ubuntu ends at the same time ours does

Forgot about the up arrow.

Ask Ubuntu is up in 2 hours also
Probably explains the Kitten pictures.

Hello @bmike

5:34 PM
What tiny anthropomorphic identity on SE has made you smile or caught you off guard.

@JasonSalaz This was the most odd tool that was granted IMO
All the sudden you get to field flag tests on obscure chat rooms where usually some people are having fun and someone isn't having it

AD-Magpies = intelligent, territorial, fondness for storing pointless trinkets of knowledge

@Daniel hey 01
I'm naming all dans 1 in binary - let's see how that goes...

AU-Kittens = Fluffy, un-toilet trained bundles of mischeif

5:37 PM
@Daniel love the sock puppet icon with goggly eyes

@bmike Yeah, and since it's network-wide rep totals, not one single 10K site. And there's no chat.se/privileges

@jaberg Non-winners can work on their Marshal badge.

@JasonSalaz seriouusly - cats have features in half the flags I've seen

@KyleCronin 144 people visited the election page, but some of the candidates have less that that many profile views! I wonder what sort of candidate research the voters do?

my guess, probably not much

5:45 PM
research on the page is about the extent of it.

About the same amount of researcher as the average voter in any local, state or federal election.

it's unfortunate, but the outcome of elections on SE highly correlates with reputation

hahahahah

I told you guys, I rated my candidates by height.

I'm number 2! I'm number 2!

5:46 PM
I spend forever researching candidates in federal, state, and local elections.
But the ones I vote for rarely win. Except when they do.

@Daniel The election page does show the profile without triggering a profile view - so I would presume that most people have seen us in action on the site without needing to look at the profiles.

But said reputation can also be a corollary for interaction on the site.

And reputation correlated well with the "helpful badges" this time around, too.

How very concise of you, Daniel.
Dan01el

Makes me sound like the birth name of Superman

5:48 PM
eh?

WAT

Wasn't he "Kal-el" or something like that on Krypton? I only know this because rec.arts.superman was a huge controversial Usenet group proposal I tried to calm down some.

(Edits on the site pushing painful questions to the top. My head hurts.)

main site or meta?

Let me get this straight, you tired to get comic book guys to calm down on the internet?
Main site.

5:51 PM
Catch you all later - time to head out...

The proposal was turning into a massive flame war. The lead advocate for the site, who I believe went by something like "KalElFan", was rather dedicated to his cause. And suspicious of the motives of anyone who disagreed with him.
But that's Usenet.

Godwin's Law
except maybe Lex Luthor instead of nazis.
Lex Luthor instead of Hitler. There we go, that's the ticket.

OK, I'm off to work now too. And won't get off until after the voting ends. So best wishes to all. Given that there are four of us here and only 3 spots, at least one of the participants in this chat won't be elected today. And whether it's me or one of the three of you, someone I voted for or the one I didn't, let me honestly say that I think you'd be a good moderator, and I'm sorry (you/I) lost.

:<
way to cover your bases, Daniel ;)
but same to you, each of you.

It's true and sincere.

5:54 PM
I know, and agree.

Good luck.
May the best Dan win ;)

:-)

Later @Daniel

(can't even type a smiley right; time to stop here)

Home time here.

5:58 PM
Safe travels.

I'll be back after the big 19:59
in 1:59...
No, 2:01
wait, 2:00!!!!
I give in

If you get here in 1:59 you'll make it.

laters, and best wishes

(I come from the era of analog timepieces.)

6:14 PM
Lunchtime. Catch you guys later.

6:28 PM
Just a thought, but what do you guys think about starting a [pundit badge] campaign? No one has the badge and I know that everyone here has left good comments. Again, just a thought....

6:48 PM
I don't need a badge to encourage me to state my opinion—in the form of a comment or otherwise.

7:00 PM
1 hour!

hey @gent How did you resize the pictures just now?

twenty twenty twenty less hours to go-o-o-o
I wanna be sedated

@jaberg Yeah, but if we all work to get the badge since no one has it....

Seems to me he did it manually.

7:04 PM
It's one more badge for those participating
@JasonSalaz That's what I figured.
But I wasn't sure

I need to write an action to automagically resize screenshots to save 'gent the trouble.

@Jason Thanks for the list here:
1
A: How to preview any file in Lion?

daviesgeekTo preview files, you need a QuickLook plugin. Special thanks to Jason Salaz for providing this list: QuickLook Plugins List QLPLugins.com And Jason's specially crafted Google search. It looks like there is support for the Drupal .module via this plugin.

@jaberg Please!!!!
I would support that!

Okay Davie, it's on the list. But its a long, long list.

If you get it out at some point, I will be happy!

(And lazy me would argue that, from my end, the resizing is automagic.)

7:11 PM
Do you develop plugins or something like that?

No I don't. But I fool around with Automator and AppleScript.

I see.
I believe an extension would be in order for this sort of thing.
45 minutes...

7:28 PM
> Election closes in 32 minutes.
getting down to the wire

Davie, just remembered that one would need a file (not contents of the clipboard) to upload to AD and creating an Automator service to scale the screenshot file is trivial.

@jaberg Oh, yeah, that's true

19 minutes and counting down
@jaberg Yeah, that'll work.

That'll provide a contextual menu (when an image file is selected in Finder) to scale the screenshot to maximum of 480 pixels.
Adjust as necessary.

7:40 PM
@jaberg cool
I will have to remember that and create one of my own.

Hardly, but I thank you for your admiration.
It's a one drag workflow.

Yup
TTYL (I have another paper to write)

Whoops, forgot how small 480 pixels is. Must adjust.

480 pixels is over half of a 1280x1024 resolution screen.

Good point.
(When I clicked on the image above it opened in small window. Once the window was expanded, it was quite readable.)
I'm working on an 11" Air at the moment and a pixel is really, really small.

7:51 PM
yep
under 10 minutes

I'll get the balloons queued up.

2 minutes
1 minute

welcome back Daniel

I'm on a carefully timed break

I'm sure
30

7:58 PM

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Errr, something like that.

(The timestamp indicated differently)

indeed
maybe it's :59:59 not :00:00
ok guys, reset, do over:

Ah

7:59 PM
20

It says "20 seconds" on the election site

Damn it, do you know how many balloons I have to gather up?
