Q: Matrix asymptotics

Celine HarumiIntroduce the asymptotic notation Big Oh in probability. To simplify the problem, let $S=a_T^{-1}(e_1'(A^{-1}-B^{-1})^2e_1)^{1/2}$ where $e_1=(1,0)'$, $a_T$ is a real sequence which converges to zero and $$A=\begin{pmatrix}A_1&A_2\\ A_2&A_3\end{pmatrix}, B=\begin{pmatrix}B_1&0\\ 0&B_2\end{pmatri...

Let me summarize what was done with (and ) so far.
The proposal was to split topological/analytic dimension from dimension in algebra (rings, modules). Here is the relevant post on meta: Should we divide [tag:dimension-theory] into 2 tags, one for topology, and one for algebra?
This was discussed also here in chat. I have bookmarked this conversation: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/3740/conversation/… But it was discussed also after that - for example, you can find some starred messages mentioning dimension.
The proposal was to split the tag and to retag the algebraic part.
indeed, the tag was created and several users helped with retagging. You can check some SEDE queries showing the retags: data.stackexchange.com/math/query/1105163/… data.stackexchange.com/math/query/1038474/…
Here are SEDE queries with counts: data.stackexchange.com/math/query/1146497/… data.stackexchange.com/math/revision/1038477/1282560/… You can see that YuiTo Cheng, Xander Henderson, rschwieb were rather active.
But the part of the proposal was also to rename the cleaned-up to . (Or something similar which clearly shows that the tag is not for algebraic notion of dimension.)
This can be done only by moderators. Can the result of the discussion on meta be considered sufficient evidence that the tag should be renamed? Should the tag be renamed now?
I will add here also links to the revision history of tag-wikis. (Since after the rename the link will no longer work.)

@Jack Well, a solution would be to change the direction of the synonym, i.e., would be master tag. (Currently the master tag is .)
This means that currently if somebody inputs (solution-verification) into the tags field, it is changed to proof-verification. If synonym went in the other direction, it would be the other way round.
The question is now whether this has to be discussed on meta first, or whether we should simply ask the mods what they think about this and whether they would be willing to change the direction of this synonym.
@quid Since you're the moderator who deals with tags relatively often, it probably makes sense to ask you. (But if you prefer, I can ask this in Mods' Office instead - to see whether the other mods would be willing to have a look.)
It is about two tag-related things which can be done by moderators. (If the mods think that they should be done.) I have mentioned them briefly above.
1. Should be renamed to ? (When was created, this was also part of the proposal which was discussed on meta.)
2. Would it be better to have rather than as the master tag in the synonym? (Jack is right that the name "solution verification" sounds more general than "proof verification".) Can this be done simply of the mods agree that it si good thing to do, or should we open a new question on meta about this first?

@MartinSleziak I renamed the tag;

@MartinSleziak I swapped them; it's literally a single click. Personally I think neither is really a good tag, but I agree that it is better to map "proof" to "solution" rather than the other way round.

Thanks for that. Of course, there might be still a few questions needed retagging. For example, the ones with abstract-algebra tag seem suspicious. (I'll try to have a look and if I am not sure, I'll ask rschwieb.)
When I go to , it still redirects me to . I assume it takes some time until the change really appears on the site.
I see that the list of synonyms already shows (solution-verification) as the target.

Yes, I just double check; it seems I at least actually did/achieved something. I assume it'll take effect soon. If not it's a bug

Thanks for your help!
Regarding the direction of the synonym, probably the only thing to do is to wait and see when (whether) it kicks in.

@MartinSleziak I slightly edited the tag wiki.

About the remark that neither of them is great, Asaf Karagila mentioned the problem with the tags (and with solution verification questions in general) a few times. For example: What do you think is the largest problem facing Math.SE today (July 2015)? and The problem with proof verification.

Maybe I should not have mentioned that the algebra version should be used for vector spaces.
Feel free to remove that. I agree that the concern is valid.

@quid As far as I can tell, the consensus was that is not suitable for questions about dimension in linear algebra.
This is also explicitly mentioned in the tag-excerpt and tag-wiki of the (dimension-theory-algebra) tag: "Questions about dimension of vector spaces, and rank of linear transformations are better placed under the [linear-algebra] tag."

I changed it again. The summary was anyway garbled. Not sure what I did there.

This wording seems fine to me: "There is also the for questions about algebraic notions of dimension, such as Krull dimension." (That is what I see as the most recent change in the revision history.)

1:58 PM
@MartinSleziak yes, the problem was in the summary.

Oh, I see: math.stackexchange.com/posts/246559/revisions I was looking at the tag-wiki rather than the tag-excerpt.
I never know what is the correct terminology. (Is the tag-wiki the whole thing? Which consists of tag-excerpt and ....? Tag-wiki-body? Or should the whole thing be called tag-info - and it consists of tag-excerpt and tag-wiki?)
Thanks a lot for your help. I am a bit curious what actually happens with the tags (solution-verification) and (proof-verification).
As a test, I have tried adding solution-verification to this question. It was changed to proof-verification. (I will remove it again.)

Strictly I think it should be rather the tag wiki excerpt, but that's bulky.
Maybe one could say, there is a tag wiki, and an excerpt of said tag wiki, which together form the tag info?
Or more simply, tag wiki is the whole thing and we refer to the tag wiki excerpt, specifically; and use as suggested body if we want to exclude it.

@rschwieb Since I see that you happen to be in chat (also in another chatroom) and this is topic you're familiar with, may I ask what you think about these questions? Should they be retagged . (All or at least some of them?)

2:45 PM
@MartinSleziak Hmmm.. I remember everyone agreeing that regular linear algebra dimension should be excluded, but then there's the transcendence degree of a field extension which is very similar. I don't remember discussing which bucket that should fall into. Maybe still "dimension theory algebra" since it is rather advanced?

Yes, I agree. I'm just toying with the idea that transcendence degree could be bucketed with regular vector space dimension
I switched two of the candidates from -analysis to -algebra, because afaict they have nothing to do with analytical dimension
I'd leave the question about poles the way it is, though

This ones has both tags (-analysis and -algebra) on purpose: Axioms that characterize the notion of dimension.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, that one I left alone for that reason

I thought that it is better if somebody who knows more about this looks at those tags. (And also thanks for your help with the retagging when (dimension-theory-algebra) was created.)

2:50 PM
I think the set you gave me looks good now.
(It's down to 2)
@MartinSleziak No problem! Glad to assist.

It's quite possible that there are still some forgotten questions in the tag which should be tagged . But maybe they are not that easy to find.
Maybe the ones with the commutative-algebra tag could be also candidates for retagging.
I should have a look at some of those later. (So that we do not bump too many questions at the same time.)

BTW if somebody wants to help with tagging, there are plenty of questions tagged which are actually about divergence/convergence of series. (This tag used to be called simply , it was renamed precisely to make the tag-name less ambiguous.)
2
For example, the questions tagged divergence-operator+sequences-and-series or divergence-operator+convergence-divergence are very likely to be tagged incorrectly. (And there might be some other reasonable ways how to find some candidates for retagging.)
