On the second part of your comment, those may be kind of alright, although I guess they also have some side-effects I don't like. But I did seize the opportunity for a mini-rant. :-)
I created those syns but massively disagree with "and don't have the same downsides as creating too many tags, right?" as a general statement. Some synonyms are toxic, way more than any tag ever could be. The worst is it's a silent poison. Questions end up with non-sense tags and the poster might not even realize. — quid ♦ 2 mins ago

@quid Maybe a bit premature question (since Mikhail Katz was not online since the tag-creation and hadn't opportunity to respond) but still: What do you think about the bourbaki tag?

@MartinSleziak It seems that Jyrki removed the tag, as well as left a comment, math.stackexchange.com/questions/1034943/…

@MikhailKatz We have a tradition of clearing suggestions for new tags in meta BEFORE using them. You should argue your case there. That is how we resolve things here. — Jyrki Lahtonen ♦ 1 hour ago

I don't see the point of the synonym. If the tag is not useful why keep it? (A synonym is useful in case somebody might not know the correct tag or if there is conflicting terminology. This is basically impossible in the given case.) — quid ♦ 13 hours ago
But still at least to some extent the reasons I mentioned in this old post might be worth considering.

I guess you have seen a situations where an inexperienced user looks for some tag and when they do not find such tag, they just choose something similarly sounding. (It is very likely that you have stumbled upon something like this if you frequently edit and retag posts.) For example: We do not...
> We do not have subgroups tag. So if a user searches for this tag, they might choose some of the tags containing the word subgroup, which are (at the moment) normal-subgroups, maximal-subgroup and subgroup-growth.
I would need some time to find such examples, but I am pretty sure that I have seen quite a few questions where: 1. The OP used some of the tags containing the word "subgroup" simply because the question was about subgroups. 2. The chosen tag was not a good fit for the question. 3. The OP did not use (group-theory) tag.
It seems that subgroup-growth tag has been problematic since its creation: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/3740/2014/11/9 and chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/3740/2014/11/21
If you look at the question that currently have this tag, many of them are chosen most likely because the OP was looking for a tag containing the word growth.
@quid It is difficult to say whether they are useful or harmful, but at least the motivation for synonyms like this seems to be clear:
1. Currently there are several users who monitor new tags, so tags that were previously discussed are very likely to be quickly removed.
2. You wrote: "A synonym is useful in case somebody might not know the correct tag or if there is conflicting terminology. This is basically impossible in the given case."
That might be valid point, also it is difficult to get some real data on this. Currently there are 143 questions tagged ring-homomorphisms, but 60 of them do not have ring-theory tag.
Although it is quite plausible to expect that if there were no (ring-homomorphisms) tag, the OP might look for some other tags and choose rings/ring-theory.
I guess we talked about this a few times before. Although I was not able to quickly find the relevant conversation - most likely it is not bookmarked.

Q: Solving $a_1+...+a_n=2011$ , $a_1\leq |a_2-a_3|, \ldots a_n\leq|a_1-a_2|$ with non-negative integers
Let $a_1,...,a_n $ non negative integers s.t. $a_1+...+a_n=2011$, where $n $ is a positive integer, $n\geq3$ and $a_1\leq |a_2-a_3|$, $a_2\leq|a_3-a_4|$,..., $a_n\leq|a_1-a_2|$. This problem is similar to What can I say about the minimum and the maximum value of $n $?, only that here the $a_n$ ...
