A: Tag management 2016

suomynonAI propose deleting the lotteries tag. It doesn't add anything useful to the question, and you can't really be an expert on questions about lotteries. The tags dice and card-games should probably also need some looking into. Usually questions with these tags just turn out to be combinatorics q...

It is worth pointing out that there already is a separate question about this tag: Why does the “lotteries” tag exist?. (I am not sure that this kind of duplication is really that useful. Since there already is a separate question, the discussion of this tag should probably continue there.) — Martin Sleziak 19 secs ago
@MartinSleziak Oh, I was the one who posted the question. Should I delete the question or my answer here? — suomynonA 5 mins ago
I know that both you posted both of them. Of course, you can keep both if you decide. But for people reading this post, knowing that there is a discussion of this issue in another place is probably useful information, so it might be good if it is linked at least in a comment. (There are many other answers in management thread which also have separate questions. My impression that usually this happens if the poster was unaware of the existence of the question or if the number of comments on the answer shown that the issue needs more space for a separate discussion.) — Martin Sleziak 18 secs ago
@MartinSleziak I added a link to the question in the answer. — suomynonA 1 min ago
Now that it is included in the question, perhaps we could remove the above comments. (Just to clean up a bit and leave here place for the comments actually related to the issue at hand.) If you agree, ping me here or in chat to let me know that I can delete my comments. — Martin Sleziak 14 secs ago

BTW here is brief exchange from the past about somewhat similar tags:

My biggest issue with the recent meta question, is that it would justify the tags for pink elephant posts, unicorn posts, red balls, blue balls....Any way, it got me thinking about how many tags there are...etc.

Another thing is that I do not think that comparison with unicorns and elephants is a good one. For example, we mention stars and bars in questions about combinatorics not because it counts stars, but because it is name of a method in combinatorics.

hey martin, you can go ahead and delete the comments. I have already deleted my comments on the post.

@suomynonA Thanks for the heads up. I did the same. (After all, the whole comment exchange is kind of "archived" here.)
BTW your answer seems to be the first 2017 post in 2016 tag management thread. We will see whether somebody will take the initiative and create 2017 tag management thread.

I can go ahead and create it, if it's needed

Needed is a strong word.

You should keep in mind that you will probably be getting lots of notifications about answers if you volunteer to do it.
wythagoras also recently made this point, but I did not view this as the responsibility of the thread creator:

It is probably time for a "Tag Management 2017" thread. I'm not creating it (yet) because the person who creates it should ideally be the person who is also willing and able to respond to all answers posted, and I'm unsure whether I will have enough time to do that in this year.
BTW the pings I mentioned above can be a bad thing - since they're a bit obnoxious - or a good things - if you want to be informed about new posts related to . So it actually depends on your point of view a bit.

I'm fine with the inbox notifications; as long as I don't get a ton every day, I can still find what I need

Well, the 2016 thread has 70 answers (including 6 delete ones). And there were a few comments. (Only mods can see deleted comments, so I can only see the one that are still there.)
That can give you rough approximation about how many notifications you can expect from thread like this.

I created the thread and added an extra guideline: "If your tag suggestion exists in a separate question, please provide a link to the question in your suggestion."

Q: Tag management 2017

suomynonANew year, new tag management thread. Rules of the game are basically the same: Post your suggestion as an answer here if you see A particularly bad tag (a rule of thumb: «if I can't imagine a person classifying a tag as either interesting or ignored, I'm getting rid of it»), A tag that shoul...

I guess it will receive several answers relatively quickly.
I did not check the older threads, but I guess that number of answers in tag management threads is increasing. Anybody will take a guess how many will there be in 2017?
Anyway, I'll have to go do some other stuff. Thanks for response and for the new thread. See you later!

According to the 2016 tag management, the 2015 thread also had 70 answers.
Take care!

I removed the last question from the tag and replaced it with the more used .
I'm not sure whether this needs a synonym, but when typing combi, one doesn't get combi-number-theory, and it will be quite hard to guess the cutoff.
Also, does a moderator regularily visit math.stackexchange.com/tags/… to see which synonyms should or could be merged?
Do we need the tag? It seems to be created for math.stackexchange.com/questions/1728608/…, so the minimal modulus theorem. The tag currently contains all sorts of questions on modular congruences and modulus funtions.
