Q: What is the utility of the contest-math tag?

Tryst with FreedomI thought it was put to prevent cheating in ongoing contests, but I am unable to figure out what utility it is of when put on questions from a contest, for which knowing answers in the present is inconsequential, is asked. Wouldn't it be enough if OP simply gave the source of the question? One pl...

Q: Functor of points of $X_{red}$

NicoLet $X$ be a scheme and let $X_{red}$ be its reduction (defined through its universal property). What is the functor of points of $X_{red}$? Put differently, which maps $\phi : \text{Spec }R \to X$ factor through the reduction of $X$? I am reading notes by Marc-Nieper Wißkirchen which claim that ...

@Feeds Probably this was asked in order to clarify this other recent question (and its accepted answer):

Q: Do problems from competitive exams for colleges count as "Competition Maths"?

fhhhI recently came across this post on always mentioning if a question is from a competition , and in the past, I've asked many questions that are from certain comeptitive exams in my country. However, these exams aren't explicitly for maths, so I'm not sure if I should have used that tag in the pa...

I suppose you have the contest-math tag in mind? It would make sense to specifically identify the source of the problems, whether or not that tag is used. Tags serve mainly for searching/filtering, and do not replace the necessary problem formulation/context in the body of a Question. However you can use the tag if it seems appropriate in your view. — hardmath yesterday
I will do that in the future. Thank you! — fhhh yesterday

A: Do problems from competitive exams for colleges count as "Competition Maths"?

Tryst with FreedomNo it's not a contest question Firstly if your competitive exams are anything like the ones in my country then the exams are conducted offline and the same questions are not repeated between papers which batches of students write. So, there is no particular gain or loss in knowing the answer to t...

I disagree with your very large bolded bit: it's a question from a contest! — KReiser yesterday
will do, @tryst with freedom. Thanks! — fhhh yesterday

A: Do problems from competitive exams for colleges count as "Competition Maths"?

KReiserYes, your question is a contest question because it is from a contest. Even if the contest is not explicitly about math, it is still a contest problem. You still need to disclose the source, explain that this is a general academic contest (or whatever the correct description is), and follow the r...

I don't follow... Are exams and contests synonymous? — The Amplitwist 3 mins ago

FWIW I would not call entrance exams "contests", but that may be due to my background with "contests" meaning mathematical problem solving events without any connections to usual school/college life. I was a bit surprised to hear that some people want to tag entrace exam questions with contest-math. I find that practice misleading, but it cannot hurt to collect more opinions. — Jyrki Lahtonen 15 hours ago

I have added to both "What is the utility of the contest-math tag?" and "Do problems from competitive exams for colleges count as "Competition Maths"?". Feel free to edit the tags if yu thing that this one isn't a good fit for those questions.
