Q: Checking if a coin is fair

AJ222I want to check if a coin is fair (lands 50% of the times on each side). I flip that coin multiple times and count the number of times it fell on heads and the number of times it fell on tails and keep a track of them. How many flips do I need in order to be 99% confident that the coin is fair ...

@AlexM. I am not entirely sure that (coin) tag is going to be useful. Previously there was (coin-flipping) tag, which was removed after some discussion, see here and here. We will see how other users will react - whether somebody wil actually use it. In any case, I have noticed you have been retagging lots of questions. Thanks for your efforts to improve the site - by improving tagging and otherwise! — Martin Sleziak 47 secs ago
Only now I noticed that you participated in the discussion about (coin-flipping) tag:
I know the user, yesterday (Dec. 8) I had a flurry of edits of his in the edit review queue (tens of them). I lost my temper and after rejecting one of those I left him a comment (prefixed with his name, of course) asking him to stop doing meaningless edits. He immediately stopped. — Alex M. @MartinSleziak: I myself am not sure about the usefullness of this tag and I consider discussing it in more detail on MetaMSE. The core argument is the following: for "dice" problems there is (dice), for "cards" problems there is (card-games), for "balls in urns" we have (polya-urn-model) and (balls-in-bins). In this context (and only in it) I found it natural to also have a (coin) tag, not knowing about the former (coin-flipping) one. This is because coins, dice, card and balls seem to exhaust the classical theory of probabilities, so why have one of them missing from the tag inventory? — Alex M. 1 hour ago
@AlexM. Thanks for your reply. Since it is not exactly relevant to this particular question, if needed, we can continue the discussion in chat (or on meta). — Martin Sleziak 18 secs ago

@MartinSleziak: I removed the tag before I realized there were comments here about it. My reasoning was that it wasn't useful unless we systematically have all coin-flipping questions tagged as such, but since there are none now it's kind of pointless to have this single question tagged. Though I've nothing against Alex's view that if we have we ought to have one for coins, but it's kind of too late now?

@user21820 Considering the previous removal of (coin-flipping) tag (see links above), it is probably better if the new tags, be it or , is discussed on meta first.
We will see, whether somebody will bring this up on meta (now or later).

@MartinSleziak: Yea okay. I don't really care which way it goes anyway. Do people even use the tags much?

@user21820 I do use them a lot. When searching. (And also when retagging - so that searching is then is easier for me and for others.)
