7:00 PM
@Alizter I thought you were in college now? Or are you just applying now?

@MikeMiller Next year.
I go when I am 18.

You're applying next year, or going next year?

Where is @WillHaunting?

Applying
@Venus Hopefully not here.

Yeesh, we'll see if they have anything left for you to learn about by the time you get there.

7:01 PM
@Venus deleted his account once again.

@Alizter Why?

@Venus EbolaSE

@BalarkaSen What?? Why did he do that?

@Venus He's leaving to focus on his studies.

@Venus He was talking about getting his life together. Good for him.

7:01 PM
@MikeMiller Isn't he used to deleting accounts anyway ?

OK, I gotta sleep.
Byes.

@Hippalectryon $$\int_0^1 \operatorname{li}^3(x) \ dx=?$$

@BalarkaSen Bye
@Chris'ssis 21

@Chris'ssis $li=Li$ ?

see ya @Alizter

7:02 PM
@MikeMiller I will miss him

Oh yeah

Will he show up again here?

@Chris'ssis How did you expect me to find that xD

@MikeMiller Well there is lots of mechanics and statistics to still learn at school. But I reckon I could do all the pure exams this year. It is just calculus essentially.

7:04 PM
@Hippalectryon Do I expect that? :D

@Chris'ssis Well you asked that as a question :)

@Venus Perhaps, perhaps not. It might be the best for him if he doesn't, so that he can focus on his studies and getting well; I think that's what he wanted to do.

See ya later, @Balarka!

@Alizter Ah, I know there's nothing left for you to learn about math in high school. I was just wondering whether there will be anything left for you in undergrad :)

@Venus I still have his email but I will not disturb him.

7:05 PM
@Hippalectryon Some questions are not that easy.

@MikeMiller Undergrad is pretty broad no? :P

@Alizter Tell me his email
@MikeMiller Yeah, I hope so.

@Venus No, because that would not be very polite on his behalf.
I don't want to disturb him. Especially because he has worked really hard to get motivated and get into the right mindset.
He has been through a lot.

@Alizter What? Our country are so close, maybe one day I will visit him
OK, fine

7:07 PM
@Venus Hopefully he has left his country.
He hates it there.

I'd not ask it again
@Alizter Too bad. I like Singapore.

@Venus Did you see this one? $$ \int_0^1 \int_0^1 {\frac {\arcsin \left( \sqrt {1-s}\sqrt {y} \right) }{\sqrt {1-y} \sqrt {sy-y+1}}}\,ds\,dy = 2\pi -2\pi \ln 2$$

@MikeMiller If I happen to know a lot of undergrad and do my exams earlier then I could do graduate math.
But maybe it is too risky.
@Chris'ssis ew

@Chris'ssis Yeah, I can see it. I'm not blind, though. :D

@Venus :D

7:11 PM
@Chris'ssis It's trivial. Haha

@Venus :D

Probably not
He is @DanielFischer's favourite user

@Alizter Why so?

:)

7:15 PM
Because he is German like @DanielFischer?

nono
He contributes such high quality content that @DanielFischer is overridden with joy.

Could you help me at the following exercise?

http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/1052007/intersection-multiplicity-of-the-curves

@Alizter Haha

@Alizter Weeeeeeelllllllllllllllll. But to be fair, I have seen a somewhat useful answer by him recently.

@DanielFischer I don't believe you :P

7:17 PM
@DanielFischer Which one?

Hi @DanielFischer !!! Do you maybe have an idea?

@DanielFischer Nice pic !

@Venus Hmm, can't find it anymore. He must have deleted it to keep his usual standard.

@DanielFischer LOL

@DanielFischer Haha. He should get a badge for that :P

7:25 PM
@Alizter He is smarter than me to be fair

@Venus Its not about smartness. At the end of the day, if he cannot take time to improve the quality of his communication even after being told so, he is not a good mathematician.
Even Balarka eventually explains if you prompt him enough

@Alizter He might be a good mathematician. But he's not a good contributor to the site.

Especially as SE is based on users being able to communicate.
@DanielFischer Not necessarily. He maybe good at mathematics but not a good mathematician.
Even Erdos took time to typeset nicely.
and you could not sustain a conversation that was not about mathematics for very long with him.

@Alizter Maybe he lacks English like me

@Venus But if I told you the correct english would you make an effort to improve your contribution?
anyway.
I am bashing him too much
He is afterall helping some people

7:30 PM
@Alizter Of course I would
@Alizter Don't be so harsh to old man :D

I think he trains olympiad teams or something

@Alizter I think so because he is a doctor
Simple yet elegant
Although, it's elementary

That is not that difficult

@Alizter I know that, but his answer is highly upvoted
This user is really good and he is a bounty hunter

r9m
7:46 PM
@Chris'ssis haha ! but I don't know what a cake ninja is ! :P

Long time no see, @r9m!
Hey, @Alizter! How've you been?

Hey @Khallil! I am good. How is Warwick?

r9m
@Khallil yo man !!

I just got back as my accommodation doesn't allow me to stay there during holidays. It's been amazing so far!
How've you been, @r9m?!?
If you get a chance, definitely choose Warwick as one of your five choices, @Alizter!

r9m
@Khallil I survived another semester as always !! ;) how 'bout you ?

7:49 PM
@Khallil I was planning second :)

Me too! I've made it out alive, @r9m. ^_^
Ah, I have a feeling I know which one will be your first, @Alizter. ;-)

r9m
@Khallil haha ! congrats to that ! we are survivors man ! :P

@Khallil If I go to Warwick you will be third year right?

@r9m ^^^

r9m
@Chris'ssis it asks me to disable safety mode ! what is it ? ;)

7:52 PM
@r9m lol. What do you mean? :-) It's from youtube.

r9m
@Chris'ssis ya .. youtube link says .. 'This video is unavailable with Safety Mode enabled. To view this video, you will need to disable Safety Mode.' .. ;)

Yup, @Alizter!

@r9m hahaha, OK. :-)

(Sorry for the late reply. My net cut off for a sec.)

@Khallil So... what have you studied so far?

7:54 PM

r9m
@Chris'ssis lol .. its like the fruit ninja game in my cell phone :P

Cool. Algebra is awesome.

Algebra is so good.

I need to study diff equations at some point.

r9m
@Khallil :P

7:56 PM
@r9m :-)

Rings, fields, groups, subgroups etc.

Yup
I am getting a book on Lie groups for christmas
Have you done Galois theory yet?

Nice! My Tutor talks about them quite a bit. ^_^
Nope, none of that yet.
Unless I have but didn't know it was called Galois theory.
What's in Galois theory, @Alizter?

Could someoe help me at this exercise?

http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/1057967/check-if-there-are-sigular-points

You study automorphisms over fields which form a group.
An automorphism is just a self isomorphism

7:58 PM
Ahh, nope. We've looked very briefly at isomorphisms, but that's it.

and then under composition these can form a group
and then properties of that group can be studied to say things about the original field

That sounds wicked!

You use it to prove the insolvability of polynomials of degree 5 and more by radicals.

I didn't really have a particular interest in any area of math before I started, but Algebra, Geometry and Mechanics are looking pretty sweet!

It is a bit of a handful to get your head around though
@Khallil What do you mean by Geometry?
I think @Khallil's internet is dead again

8:02 PM
Really basic geometry like defining distances, angles, isometries, congruences like the basic SAS, ASA and SSS.
Sorry for the late reply, @Alizter. My net died again. ^_^
Haha, you're a psychic!

@Khallil Oh ok. I thought you were going to say diff or algebraic geo :P
But yeah. Algebra is awesome.

Oh, nothing like that. Next term, we're studying Geometry and Motion which is to do with like vectors and stuff like that, @Alizter!

Cool :) Who is your tutor? Are they with the uni?

They are with the uni. Every math student is assigned a tutor. I don't know if I'm allowed to say who it is. :/

Don't tell me who.
So can you just ask them stuff?
Or are they your prof?

8:05 PM
Yep, anything. I have a supervisor as well that I meet up with twice a week. We usually go over the assignments that we hand in.
Nope, my tutor only lectures one 3rd year module I think.

Oh cool. How often do you meet your tutor?

Once a week. I rarely have questions for him because I'd have spent the whole Sunday night/Monday morning doing the Analysis due for 9 am on Monday morning. ;P

haha
I'm worried I might annoy my tutor with so many questions :P

That can only be a good thing, honestly!
They want to see that you're actually interested in the subject. ^_^

I hope I do well in my A levels

8:08 PM
Don't worry, you'll be fine!

Computing and Maths are fine
Just Physics and Chem need extra work

Just make sure you prep for them properly. Don't leave it to the last week although knowing you, you'd still probably be fine!

I am really enjoying Chemistry though
Physics is a bit boring.

Yep, Chem requires a lot of memorisation. Physics is more straight-forward.

I enjoy the subject just not the course.

Today we learnt the parallelogram rule for vectors :P

I felt the same with Chem. The whole subject seems very cool, but the course was dead.
Haha! It's so nice! ^_^

I disagree, AP Physics B took a lot of memorization. The formula sheet had at least 100 formulas on it

@teadawg1337 But howmany formulae do you really need to memorise?
Surely there are base ones
@Khallil How important are things like being a prefect and extra curric when applying to unis?

@Alizter Kinematics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, modern physics, etc.

8:13 PM
@teadawg1337 Sounds like you do it in a lot more detail than we do

So much that the course was split into two separate AP courses this year. I took it the last year it was offered

Honestly, if you're applying for math (I can't really say for other subjects) being a prefect won't hurt your application (obviously) but it doesn't really help much either. It's just something the admissions tutors will glance over and not really take into consideration. On the other hand, doing something extracurricular that's related to math will help!

@Khallil Like drinking beer and counting how many bottles you have drunk. hic

@Alizter I wasn't saying it's bad how much you're learning! I was just joking with you.
@N3buchadnezzar Do the bottles you see two of count as 1.5?

@MikeMiller Don't worry I got the joke :P
I am not THAT literal

8:16 PM
Just checkin.

@Khallil What things can one do that is extracurricular and math related?

@Alizter Programing

@Alizter Mu Alpha Theta for one, maybe some tutoring

10 bottles of beer on the wall, 10 bottles of beer ... ♫ @N3buchadnezzar!

Solving the Riemann hypothesis can't hurt @Alizter

8:16 PM
Hmm I tutor some people and I help the olympiad team

That's more than enough, @Alizter!

@MikeMiller My mate down the pub already did that.

I just read a few books and put that in my app, @Alizter. ^_^

@Alizter Knock him out and take his solution.

@MikeMiller No. He is at the police station for brawling with a physicist.

8:18 PM
@Khallil I really like your profile quote.

I could dress up and play dirty cop.
@Khallil Can you put down books you have read?

Of course, @Alizter!

The moderator election is now underway.

Thanks, @MikeMiller! I'm pretty sure I got it from somebody one here. ^_^

8:19 PM
@MikeMiller Indeed. I got a badge for being curious :P
@Khallil Are the people who check uni applications not always math literate?
For example if I saw that I have read about Lie Groups that might not make much sense to a history prof?

@Khallil Do you mind saying what school you're at? I'm curious.

University of Warwick

@Alizter Here, rarely. In the US admissions committees are administrators, not professors.
Ah, Warwick's nice.

@MikeMiller I have considered applying to the US. The only thing I worry about is guns and health insurance.

Nope, I'm pretty sure people from the math department deal with all of that stuff. I've heard that if your predicted grades are good, then you're pretty much guaranteed to get an offer as STEP sifts out a lot of people, @Alizter.
It is indeed, @MikeMiller. Such a beautiful campus. ^_^

8:22 PM
Oh yeah. If I do really well in STEP it will be good.

May I ask where you went to university, @MikeMiller?
(I'm assuming that you've already been because you sound über smart. :P)
Like. A. Boss.

Health insurance is worth worrying about. I hate the gun culture here, but you don't need to worry about being shot.

Wow @Khallil How did you get so much rep today :P
@MikeMiller When a shooting happens in the US the news here makes it sound like the entire country was in a hostage situation.
The US is BIG.

@Khallil I went to Santa Clara University for my undergrad; it's a small school in California. I'm a grad student at UCLA now.

That's so cool! UCLA sounds amazing, @Mike!

8:24 PM
I know robjohn is at UCLA?

I kinda omitted that bottom part before, @Alizter! =P

@Khallil The only rep I get on MO is edits and the initial bonus :P

@Alizter I am not a fan of media covering of shootings. This is not the place for me to comment about that, though.
@Alizter I think he is, but I haven't met him.

@MikeMiller So what is the situation with health insurance?

It sucks. Most schools have a health center where you can get care for things like a cold or flu for free, but no emergency care.
As a graduate student part of my benefits is good health insurance, which I'm grateful for. But when you don't have something like that it's usually pricey.

8:27 PM
@N3buchadnezzar The effects of beer, eh?

You might talk to someone more knowledgeable about that than me.

Here's a math question related to my current ill state: "I'm running a fever of 38.61 degrees Celcius. If my body temperature 24 hours ago was the average human body temperature (37 degrees C), solve for $x$ in terms of $\theta$."

@Khallil =)

Are you asking for a closed form solution for $x(\theta)$, @teadawg1337?

I wonder who I would nominate for moderator. I would nominate the user formerly known as Raff, but I think he's probably more effective as a regular user.

8:29 PM
@Khallil Yes

@MikeMiller behaviour does not want to run for mod.

@MikeMiller Somebody suggested Martin Sleziak on meta. I think that wouldn't be a bad choice. (And I agree with you about the man of many names.)
@Alizter I found it extra-laudable, by the way, that he used the correct spelling.

Find the closed form of $$\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n}\sum_{m=1}^{n-1}\frac{1}{m} \arctan\left(\frac{m}{n^2-mn+1}\right)$$

@DanielF I would definitely like a set of moderators who are harsh on PSQs/want to see a general quality increase.

What's a PSQ again?

8:35 PM
@teadawg1337 Problem Statement Question.
2
A copy-pasted homework assignment without any personal input.
What, me think about my own homework? UMAD?

Dr Sonnhard for mod
11

@Alizter Only if mods are in future forbidden to post answers.

hehe

@DanielFischer Ah, that's right! Thank you, I'm still trying to get used to certain terminologies used on Math.SE

@MikeMiller The reason health insurance is important for me is because I have type 1 diabetes. Its easy to forget that we have the NHS in england.

8:38 PM
@Alizter You should definitely speak to someone more knowledgeable about the US health care system than I, then. All I know is how it's affected me.

I think that is still important knowledge.
What university in america would I even apply to :P

@MikeMiller I don't think anyone in the entire United States is qualified enough to talk about the health care system here

@Alizter There are one or two good schools here...

I heard that English grades lose meaning when transferred over
I would have to take american exams I think

@Alizter If he nominates his self, I will vote for him :D

8:41 PM
The two universities that come to my mind for mathematics in the US are Berkeley and MIT

and UCLA and Harvard and Teds Uni

Isn't Berkely very.. politically oriented?

Are the students at Berkeley politically liberal? Usually, yes. That's unrelated to its quality as an academic institution.

@Studentmath Who gives a crap about politics when you want to get a fantastic education?

Nah, I meant that they don't let anyone with different opinion participate in anything, regardless of his academic achievements and capabilites
But I don't really know, so I really shouldn't have said anything - just rumours

8:44 PM
That's not true at all.

Harvard is probably better than MIT in mathematics, I'm not sure

I would generally appreciate if we did not spend this time trying to rank US institutions.

All I know is I'll never get in to MIT, Berkeley, or Harvard

@Alizter Feel free to email me if you'd like to ask about US schools.

@MikeMiller It's all subjective, I didn't mean to spark any arguments

8:45 PM
Speaking of which, I got a mathematical question

@MikeMiller Ok will do.

@Studentmath You're on the right website :p

It's seven @Studentmath

As for ranking Unis. The best uni is the one that is right for you :)

Hiya, @NajibIdrissi

8:46 PM
@Najib fortunately

@MikeMiller Hi

@Mike I would've bet you would say 42

It's definitely not 42, Adams was working on faulty information.

I wonder why people tend to choose 7, 13 rather often when asked to choose a nubmer at random

Adams made it up on the spot

8:50 PM
15 a lot too

Ask me

But that's off the point - I have a non-abelian group of order $2015$

They're the most random numbers
Sure, I do too.

@Mike how many are there, up to isomorphism, that we can share?

@Studentmath It's because people tend to think of 7 and 13 as the numbers "least chosen"

8:51 PM
I was having an argument with a friend. If I have a Brownian motion. The average location of the particle will not tend to the origin.

It took me a while to check whether 2015 was prime

Off the point again - I want to show the group has a single subgroup of order 5 (and that it is cyclic)

My average location on a random walk will be a density

@Najib It ends with 5, and is therefore divisible by 5...

@Studentmath That I've got no idea about. I only have one in mind.

r9m
8:52 PM
@DanielFischer :P LOL

@Studentmath First prove that a cyclic group of order n is unique

I guess seeing if it holds for a group of order $pqr$ with $p$, $q$ and $r$ prime would work
(with $p < q < r$)

UserX asked about this the other day

So, $2015=5*13*31$. I therefore know that its sylow-5 subgroup is of order 5, and therefore it is cyclic (of prime order)
And it exists

oh, my factorization was wrong. oh well.

8:54 PM
@Studentmath Can you prove that cyclic groups if order n are unique?

Cyclic subgroups?

there can be more than one Sylow $p$ subgroup, a priori @studentmath

@Najib of course, I know one exists for sure though.

@Alizter He's asking about the fact that there's only one subgroup of order 5, not one group of order 5.

@Alizter that's not the question...

8:54 PM
Well if it is a cyclic subgroup then proving that order n is unique means there is a single cyclic subgroup of order 5

Not necesserly true I would think @Alizter

But yeah ignore me :P

Certainly if $n$ is not prime
I am confused...

no it doesn't... $\Bbb Z_5 \times \Bbb Z_5$ has three subgroups of order $5$

Wooh!

8:55 PM
@Studentmath does using the other Sylow theorems work?

So I am not confused

Thats not what I mean but I am too lazy to type
oh well
ignore me

@Najib so yeah, if it has more than 1 sylow subgroup of order 5, it has precisely 31.
I would think to argue that, since they are all adjacent and cyclic, they all share just the $e$ element
But it doesn't lead me to any contradiction
I guess it has to do with the group being non-abelian, but I am not sure -why-

@Studentmath You need to look at the other Sylow subgroups too

You'll have cardinality problems, yeah

8:58 PM
If the group is non-albelian then it is not a product of cyclic subgroups right?

@alizter yes

@Najib @Mike Hah, too many elements of order 5?

yes, that's what I would guess
it's typically how these problems go

@Alizter that's also interesting - will try both approaches, thanks to you all!

@Studentmath In that case look for a subgroup of order 13 x 31

8:59 PM
and I guess that non-abelianness will come up when you will say that the group can't have an element of order 2015
