I think the best way to get a solid and intuitive grip of the basics is to use the language actively like in this chat. I've certainly made my fair share of silly mistakes, and because of them I now make less of them.
@Adam Trying to conduct an actual conversation in Latin reminds me a bit of the first time I visited England. (At that time, my English and my Latin may have been about on par ;-))
