@Nickimite In Finland some PhDs end up teaching in high school, but I'm not sure if that is a thing in the US. Here every teacher has a master's.
Have you seen any interesting topics or advisors for a potential PhD yet?

@JoonasIlmavirta Many PhDs end up teaching HS here, too. But it's not a straightforward process. In many states, the degree is worthless for credentialing purposes, and a PhD holder would need to go back too take additional coursework specifically for teaching at the secondary education level.
My current state won't even recognize licenses from other states.

@cmw A master's isn't enough to teach in Finland either. You need a specific credential, but it is included in the degree programs aimed at teachers.
I have a master's degree and I completed the pedagogical bit after my PhD, so now I am qualified. Most professors don have that.

@JoonasIlmavirta I can teach 18 year olds, but not 17 year olds? To me it boggles the mind. But I can also see some justification for certain tests, certain specific coursework, on the job training, etc. Too many hurdles, though, and the students suffer from a lack of teachers and a lack of expertise.

@cmw It's odd indeed. But I get the idea that there have to be some clear formal requirements and that teaching younger kids is less about content and more about classroom skills.

I'm not sure what I'm doing in terms of topics or specific advisors. I feel like it's been a whirlwind since August. With all the opportunity around me and the reading I'm doing, I feel stretched for time.

I know I like history, I like poetry. What I really like is the sense of meaning and narrative constructed in ancient texts, wisdom-bearing narratives which are progressively being lost. I'm far off from writing anything that will revolutionize the field, but I want to be in that place to facilitate ancient wisdom becoming common wisdom. For me, the best way to do that seems to be retell
