2:02 AM
@Adam Nice.
We have lots here, but then I think we have always had quite a few, ever since the Middle Ages.

13 hours later…
2:42 PM
@Cerberus I bet many have been operating continuously since then, too!

2 hours later…
4:16 PM
@Adam I think there is usually a bit of discontinuity when breweries claim to be that old.

4:33 PM
@Cerberus I guess it's to be expected. Everyone sobers up sometimes.

4:47 PM
Heh exactly.

1 hour later…
6:14 PM
@SebastianKoppehel Is this regional as they say in the Twitter thread?

1 hour later…
7:34 PM
@Adam I have certainly not heard it before. The German expression she cites is just a straight-forward way to say "I feel visited enough now." What if someone told you that was a clever English idiom, and when you raise you eyebrows, they'd say, ah, you see it's very regional? That's how that Twitter thread sounds too me 😉
This gentleman has it right.

8:24 PM
@SebastianKoppehel Perhaps "regional" is a new euphemism for 'overly direct' haha.
What my friend says is, "ik ga jullie eruit schoppen".
"I'm going to kick you out."

@SebastianKoppehel I wonder where this sort of thing originates from...
@Cerberus I really like the more forceful, "get the fuck out of my house"

@Cerberus I take it as a euphemism for "I have no proof but this sounds fun so I'll claim it's true".

@Adam How subtle!

But perhaps putting effort into detailed analysis of a tweet is moot, given the amount of effort and depth that goes into the average tweet.

@JoonasIlmavirta Heh that is no doubt true.

8:32 PM
@Cerberus I'm surprised we haven't heard that on our site yet. "There's the regional variant Romas for 'to Rome'."
...and I bet that's actually found in an inscription somewhere.

@JoonasIlmavirta Hmm...

@Cerberus I should have gone with something like Romum, I suppose.
Or claimed that Roma comes from Rauma like Clodius from Claudius.

Sounds lovely.

Rauma (Finnish: [ˈrÉ‘u̯mÉ‘]; Swedish: Raumo) is a town and municipality of around 39,000 (31 March 2021) inhabitants on the west coast of Finland, 92 kilometres (57 mi) north of Turku, and 50 kilometres (31 mi) south of Pori. Its neighbouring municipalities are Eura, Eurajoki, Laitila and Pyhäranta. Granted town privileges on 17 April 1442 (then under the rule of Sweden), Rauma is known for its paper and maritime industry, high quality lace (since the 18th century) and the old wooden architecture of the city centre (Old Rauma, Vanha Rauma), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. == History == In...

8:50 PM
Na gut!

9:06 PM
@cmw The words may vary, but I believe the gesture is international...

Indeed!
I suppose we do the same thing here.
Using words like "nou" or "goed" or a combination thereof.
Or we could say, in the middle of a conversation, "het was gezellig".
Was, not is.
Usually accompanied by standing up.

"Anyway ... so, how are you getting home?"

Oh, I tried that one once.
Oh, and I tried, at 4 AM, "I'm going to shower now".
To which the reply was, "oh, does it take long?".
And this was a purely platonic fellow student.

@Cerberus Not all take hints well.

No, indeed.

9:18 PM
Nothing will work, aside from "I'm afraid that was the last bottle of beer."

I think he was slightly autistic.
@SebastianKoppehel Hah.

cmw
@SebastianKoppehel It's not unlike in English.
Same slapping and all.

@Cerberus That does explain it, but it doesn't take a condition to be impervious to a hint every once in a while.
I imagine we've all been that idiot at some point. I know I have.

@cmw Rub your legs, stretch a little... I bet even the Romans did it alresdy when the amphorae were empty.
Wouldn't be surprised if Aulus Gellius had written a piece on "One way to signal to your guests it is time to leave" or some such.

cmw
@SebastianKoppehel I'd suspect Athenaeus to have something in his Deipnosophistae.
@SebastianKoppehel Even then there's always the retort: "Well, shall we get more?"

9:37 PM
@cmw In Berlin, they have the (in) famous Späti specifically for that contingency.
We don't have those shops here in the West, but we have gas stations...

cmw
@SebastianKoppehel We have a similar thing in NYC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodega_(store)

@JoonasIlmavirta No, indeed.
Although I felt the hint was pretty big haha.
I expect him to leave of his own accord an hour earlier.

The way things shut down in Germany at night can be frightening. True story: two years ago I was stranded at Frankfurt airport at around 10 pm (Hamburg airport was unexpectedly shut down completely that day, so I had to take the train home, which did not go until 12:30 or so). Frankfurt is presumably one of the busiest airports in the world, and the whole place was dark, empty and deserted. I could not get anything warm to eat. Bizarre.

Ugh, that's bad.
So were there no flights after 22.00?

10:00 PM
@Cerberus The airport here in Hambzrg was completely shut down for the day because they had found unexploded ordnance near the runway, so there was no getting home by air.

10:20 PM
@SebastianKoppehel OK but you werein Frankfurt: were there no flights and people walking around after 22.00?

10:38 PM
@Cerberus Yes, I think departures end at 22.00 or so.

@SebastianKoppehel Hmm odd!
But good for the environment.

@Cerberus Late/night flights are a huge political/legal issue here because of the noise.

As they should be.

I'd have expected things to be similar in the Netherlands, no?

Well, noise certainly is an issue, but there are many flights at night.
Hmm, actually, there are none at the moment!
Perhaps not during weekdays?

10:47 PM
@Cerberus Also, Corona...

That may be it...
Although traffic has been pretty difficult here since the last lockdown, because of all the tourists.
They plague us despite current restrictions.
Spreading new variants extra fast...

@Cerberus I've been one of those tourists in Holland (ante pestem!), so I won't say anything.
The people who go on foerign vacations in 2021 though, I don't get it.

Several of my coworkers have gone on multiple trips in 2020/2021, both domestic and international. I think they don't grasp what vaccinated means for both themselves and those they come in contact with.

cmw
11:04 PM
@SebastianKoppehel I did go on one trip this year, but I had a very motivated reason for going, the plane I went on required everyone to be vaccinated and have a negative COVID test, and the place I went to required all visitors to be vaccinated and quarantine until their first test cleared, and then remain restricted for another week until their second test cleared.
It was my first trip out of my city since March 2020.

Very thorough steps.

cmw
Yeah, in 2020 it would have been stupid, after widespread vaccination I've been more forgiving so long as people remain cautious, wear a mask, etc. I think with omicron things will soon get back to being as if there was no vaccine (except to decrease the risk of severe cases).
And then the people who go to crowded places - like that anime convention that apparently happened here in NYC. That's what I think is absolute madness.

@cmw I keep seeing pictures of concerts and people packed together without masks...
It seems like people are being careful with talking about omicron right now. Probably don't want to cause a panic or a market crash.

cmw
Yeah, foreign travel with all the precautions is probably much, much safer than one crowded concert in your hometown.
The good news is that omicron is less severe than delta.
Obviously no Covid is good Covid, but it's a bit of a relief.

11:20 PM
Yea, seems like delta is still far more of a problem.
At least until the next bad variant. I'm reminded I need to schedule a booster soon.
Joonas and Cerberus, has vaccination become more widespread amongst younger populations now?
