12:00 AM
@MikeMiller If I can figure out how, I will.

Happy New Year

People stop spamming or we'll have to suspend you all.
2

@PedroTamaroff You're just angling for the hat, too.

@Pedro is power-crazy!!!!

I don't know what to write for the elements of a real vector space with all real valued functions in the interval [0,1]

12:00 AM
@MikeMiller shhh

@teadawg1337 Your clock seems to be a minute ahead of mine

@PedroTamaroff If you think this is crazy, check out the Tavern

Happy UTC 2015!

Lots of people in chat tonight!

@beginner $f$, maybe? Where $f$ is a function $[0,1] \to \Bbb R$.

12:01 AM
@PedroTamaroff Come on, it's celebration time!
7

Ah, I've got my hat. You can kill my stars now if you want.

Star me please:D

I don't have my hat yet :(

@MikeMiller but perhaps it is revoked then?

@mike how do I prove it is infinite dimensional? I know that it would be , because you could always change things and by induction blah blah, but how do I show it with linear algebra stuff?

12:02 AM
I almost missed everything....
....doing reviews.
3

@Quid in that case we should wait till 00:05, that way we make sure Mike can't bring it back.

2015 will be a great year for me because my ex will be out of my mind.

@beginner The set {1,x,x^2,x^3,....} is an infinite set of linearly independent functions.

Oh come ON! My serial downvoter is back.

There's still far too much starring going on

12:04 AM
@jimmy on interval [0,1] though

consisting of, forming part of, or taking place in a series
serial

Wait let me write the question in full

I still don't have my hat

Prove that the real vector space consisting of all continuous real-valued functions on the interval [0,1] is infinite dimensional

@beginner Yes, what Jimmy said works.

12:05 AM
So is chat busy now?
2

I suspect I've deleted 10 comments nw.
But no hat. So not sure.

@beginner, suppose you could find a finite basis of that space. Bad things happen.

@everyone thanks for the silver badge, though :P

So what does it mean by on the interval [0,1]?

@beginner As functions $[0,1] \to \Bbb R$.

12:06 AM
@beginner, functions $f:[0, 1] \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$.

@MikeMiller It takes some time

Ohhhhh
Does it always mean that? When it is on the interval(unless it says otherwise) it maps to the reals?

@KajHansen I need to use the phrase "Bad things happen" more often in my proofs.

Yeah that is good :)

@JimmyK4542, I've been on GA Tech's campus at least 3 times in the past week or two :D

12:09 AM
Is anyone going to JMM?

Got 'em all. OK, I'm done. Merry 2015 folks.

I think I missed the Mistletoe hat :-(

You guys only left 15 things for me in the close queue.
@robjohn Mine took over 5 minutes to show. Give it another five. If not... :(

@MikeMiller You're welcome :D

Isn't ted normally here now?

12:12 AM

And where has @balarka been?

Knowing him, Ted's probably entertaining guests in his home right now @beginner.
And given the time zone, Balarka will probably be asleep for another 6 hours.

:'(

@JMoravitz, I love it!

Oh... I see... the chat comment I made at 12:05 UTC needs to be starred... I didn't read that closely.

12:13 AM
At least you are here kaj, also where has our friend alister gone

@Kaj wow you are a psychic!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoever is flagging messages that aren't offensive, please stop. I think we can all agree this isn't offensive:
5
10 mins ago, by Kaj Hansen
@beginner, suppose you could find a finite basis of that space. Bad things happen.

Wow, I only got through 8 before it was cleared.

They're always my messages too :(

I don't know... "bad things" might mean ~bad things~ wink wink

12:17 AM
@JMoravitz Eeek! Bad things are happening!

Hi, Chris!

123
Hey.

@MikeMiller flagged for being offensive (bragging) (just kidding, or am I?)
grats

Hi @Mike

12:23 AM
Ok, the flag notifications are getting obnoxious. Stop.

I concur

What's getting flagged?
Teadawg, you can't see flags, so no whining.

Your last message did just then @Mike, but lots of them are.

I can't imagine why. There's no hat for being a dick.

ha.

12:25 AM
@MikeMiller I'm not whining

In related news, I'm getting downvoted on main again :P

wow ur so cool @Kaj! Teach me to be like u!

Ok I have U={a,b,c,d,e\in R^5 : a=3b,c=7d}

Is proper notation for the basis: ((3b,b,0,0,0),(0,0,7d,d,0),(0,0,0,0,e)) or something with set theoretical notation?

@robjohn In a recent comment you said, "As long as we choose a path that stays more than $\frac{1}{3}$ away from a negative integer, $\psi(z) \sim \log(z)$ for large $z$." Is that the actual cut-off point? In one of my answers I considered the function $ \displaystyle f(z) = \frac{\pi \cot(\pi z) [\gamma +\psi(-4z)]}{z^{2}}$, and finding a path that stays that far away from the poles at the positive integers and the positive quarter-integers doesn't even seem possible.

Assuming your math is correct, then almost @beginner. A basis is a set, so you'll want to have {} on the outside.

12:26 AM
Why is @don patronising @kaj?

That should be fine @beginner there are multiple representations for the same basis

yeah, why is @kaj being patronized by don? notice the passive verb here.

(instead of parentheses)

it's because he sent me threatening e-mails.

@quid Hats are never taken back, after all they will disappear in less than 4 days...

12:27 AM
Sure...

Happy new year @KajHansen!!!

Likewise @evinda !

@RandomVariable No... we just need to stay more than an $\epsilon$ away from a pole. In the answer, I say it more precisely.

So, @Behaviour, who's in your picture? Neil?

What is a passive verb @don? Verbs are doing words, so what does passive do to them? Thanks @kaj

Neither. An anonymous person appearing in Being Boring video.

@kaj he didn't ask you

Anonymous to me, that is.

@beginner active: don drank the liquor.
passive: the liquor was drank by don.

@Behaviour so in fact all are taken back. :-)

12:29 AM
@RandomVariable for that, you'd let $\epsilon$ be around $\frac1{12}$

You'd think the mistletoe would be above anonymous, rather than below.

I decided it's a tie. :)

Very professional!

@don from the wiki page I think you are wrong, I think passive would have been 'the liquor was drunken'

I don't know the difference between drunk, drank, and drunken.

12:32 AM
WWithout mention to you

i am a college student.

I think it doesn't say your name because your name is unimportant in passive
You are distracting don

idunnolol.jpeg

Who got moderator this session by the way? Quid, Pedro and anyone else?
Hi @jasper tell us about passive verbs please

@robjohn Not to sound stupid, but by $\epsilon$ do you mean any small positive real number?

12:34 AM
@beginner I don't know English grammar.

@jasper nooooooooooooooo
Be right back ,I will get my study hat

@beginner as I am not a moderator of this site, rather not me. But in case you need something feel free to let me know.
(Technically I have mod power here.)

What got flagged just now?

@RandomVariable yes. Think of the graph of $\cot$. It reaches it's maximum near each pole (and each pole is a duplicate of the others).

12:51 AM
Congratulations, @MikeMiller!

Truly my greatest achievement yet.

My friend is bringing over a rail gun, what is that?

@beginner, a gun that uses electromagnets to propel its ammunition.

That sounds dangerous, he said he made it

I doubt your friend is bringing over a working railgun.

1:01 AM
@MikeMiller, it's conceivable, but I doubt it has the power of an actual gun.

Is it illegal?

Doubt it

well, remember to practice basic gun safety @beginner if he does bring something that fires some sort of projectile. What goes up must come down, so if he insists on firing something, do it towards dirt or a tree and not into the air or at people or property

Or at metal! You don't want ricochets.

Even seemingly harmless projectiles like matchstick rockets can potentially blind someone

1:05 AM
Don't shoot at metal, that is.

That makes sense, thanks for your advice
Ok he's here ill be back when he leaves

Have fun!

@Kaj wtf r u talking about?
haha a rail gun, hory sheet good luck

What do you mean @DonLarynx ? It's not a good idea to shoot at a plate of metal because it ricochets.

ah true @Kaj.

1:23 AM
I have found some new year pictures that are related to Mathematics. Have you seen pictures or wishes that are related to computer science? :)

wat? no

@DonLarynx Will you be out partying later on?

@Jasper: I decided to stay in.

@DonLarynx OK. You can celebrate with your mum at home.

@Jasper: I decided to stay in because I need to beat @Jorge in Project Euler. (100% serious)

1:29 AM
@DonLarynx Well, that's not a good reason to me.

@Jasper I don't care.

@DonLarynx Maybe I will go and work as a waiter this year.

@Jasper waiters make a decent amount of money for entry-level
you make lots of connections.

@DonLarynx You do know I don't live in the US, right? So what applies to your country may not apply to mine.

@JasperLoy It was a better job than I might have otherwise gotten, but after all is said and done, I'm glad I'm not doing it anymore

1:36 AM
@JMoravitz OK. Just trying to make some money and occupy myself before I am ready to study again.

worked restaurant for 10 years up till the beginning of the fall semester when I began my master's and the contract for fellowship dictated that I wasn't allowed any other employment
The waiter nightmares/dreams were the worst
Thankfully I've only had one since having stopped
scholarsandrogues.com/2009/01/08/… apparently some people still get them decades after. I suppose that may be true of other professions as well, but it seems particularly consistent for waiters.

That's intense @JMoravitz. I'm glad you're on the up-and-up :D

1:59 AM
Ok he is gone
It didn't go well but I can't talk about it

Who is gone?

His friend, who brought a gun.

a rail-gun

Bill used to be called Gone.

He isn't allowed here any more

1:59 AM
LOL

@beginner To chat?
Really?

I think guns are very dangerous.

No to my house my friend
He brought a rail gun that shot sharpened metal bolts

And where did those sharpened metal bolts end up @beginner ?

Can't talk about it :*

2:01 AM
@beginner I can't say I'm that surprised. I have a friend who recently got a carry-permit, and we never allow him to bring his weapons into the house either. Especially if there would be drinking involved.

Yeah guns are really bad

@beginner Your parents don't let you talk about it? That's weird.

Its one thing to have one for protection. Its another thing to have one for showing off and having fun.

@PedroTamaroff, the daily roomba cleaned up my old downvotes, but he/she is back at it again. Will the script suspend users if it's a recurring problem?

@KajHansen No, but we will. We're looking at it.

2:02 AM
My country doesn't allow guns

@KajHansen I recently had a serial downvote to me as well. There was a link that you could click after it was reverted detailing the process

@DonLarynx Are you the one who downvoted @KajHansen?

@DonLarynx I trust it's not you then. I don't want you to get suspended.
A person who serially downvotes another may be suspended from the site for a week.

2:05 AM
:O Oh no!!!!!!!!!

@don what grade are you in?

@beginner I am a graduate student.

This may seem like a really stupid question, but is user's objection legitimate here: math.stackexchange.com/questions/1087169/…

@beginner Please avoid personal accusations in chat.

@Jasper I just noticed Mr. Scott is holding a grenade.

2:10 AM
@beginner Please, stop.

@don how old are you then?

@beginner older than you LMAO

I didn't say who @pedro! That was a passive English use!

@KajHansen If $a_n > c$, it's possible that the limit is $c$. I think that's the point here

To all Avoid flagging things not flag-worthy. It creates noise.
20

2:11 AM
You are probably 2x my age @don

@beginner good. it doesn't matter.

@beginner Please. =)

Oh wow. Yes, you're right @MikeMiller.

Do many chat users here disappear for ever

Walks away embarrassed

2:12 AM
I don't think your answer works. (I did not read it carefully, though.)

I'm convinced it does not now.

@Pedro As a moderator, remember that it is one of your duties to serve as a role model for other users but not cluttering the star board. Be very careful as to what you star.
Or else me and my army will take you down.

You're not a graduate @don, I can solve some of your questions!

@beginner Some.

@beginner, you're also learning material that I learned within the past 2 years as an undergrad.

2:16 AM
@pedro some of them are first chapter algebra problems!

@beginner How old are you?

@pedro 13 Mr moderator
@pedro 12 may 2001

Unimportant anyways. I don't think it should matter who is capable of what. We are all on the same team. By the fact each of us are here now suggests that we all appreciate the MSE community and wish to give back to it in some way.

Wow, I feel connected now.

We all help solve what it is when we can where we can

2:17 AM
@beginner Good. You're all legal and stuff here.

Yes @pedro :)

@JMoravitz I play on my own team.
This also explains why I frequently lose at volleyball.

as evidenced by your hat collection @MikeMiller

@don what year as a undergrad are you?
@kaj I haven't done any calculus yet though hehe
@kaj calculus looks boring for some reason

I'm not a big fan of analysis.
The little I've done.

2:19 AM
Everyone needs to know some, though

I am learning epsilon delta and epsilon n stuff though

Yes, you need to know that. :)

@beginner: LIKE I SAID. I AM A GRADUATE.

Please don't shout.

wtf man

2:26 AM
@DonLarynx "Graduate" means you have graduated.

@quid Normally, even when I type in caps, I am doing so silently. At least as silently as my keyboard is.

@Pedro I technically have all my credits, my identity no longer consists of being an undergrad :p (I cancelled my grad check)

Am I banned :(?

Not yet.

Not yet??
So I am close??

2:28 AM
Well, @beginner, it takes me a minute to ban the users I don't like. You have to be patient.

How do you ban people mike??

Very carefully.

@beginner You need to avoid calling people things. Then you'll be fine.

How do I find the four elements in a field with only four elements?

Well, would you continue to call people liar, it might happen. @beginner
Or what Pedro said.

2:29 AM
@beginner What do you mean, 'find the four elements'?

Okay I will always use passive language

I don't think your last message was posted in bad intentions, but context is not always on your side here.

@beginner wow.

How do I find the four elements in a field of only four elements

They're the elements of your field.

2:30 AM
What @don
@don those don't make a field...

@beginner Why not

@don under additive or Multiplicative closure

You need to be more clear if you want a useful answer, unfortunately. Are you looking for an explicit description of the field?

@beginner, for a specific example, start with $\mathbb{Z}_2[x]$ and mod out by a good choice of irreducible polynomial.

@beginner Do you know what $\Bbb Z_2$ is?

2:31 AM
The most explicit you'll get is the following. $F_4$ consists of four elements: $0, 1, \omega, \omega+1$, where $1+1=0$ and $\omega^2 = \omega+1$.

Yes but, Z_4 isn't totally invertible

Right Z_4 is not F_4

@beginner Why would you bring up $\Bbb Z_4$?

That was a response to Pedro, but yes @mike that makes sense
@pedro because I wanted the four element version and I started with the Z_4 but it was only a commutative ring and not a field

@beginner Do you know what's the general procedure to obtain a field of order $p^n$ from $\Bbb Z_p$?

2:33 AM
All finite fields of order $p^r$ can be thought of as field extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_p$

Where are you learning your algebra, @beginner?

So you want to start with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ as your base field, since $4 = 2^2$.

Various planes but Cohn classic algebra right now

That's unfortunate to be sure.

So since $4$ is not prime, I take the prime decomposition 2^2 and then treat it like two pairs of elements if that makes sense
@mike why is Cohn bad?

2:35 AM
The only person alive who likes that book is Jasper.

@KajHansen

Oh @mike what is better??

I dunno. Ask Pedro.

What's up @PedroTamaroff?

Did you know this one? If in a commutative ring every prime is finitely generated, then every ideal is finitely generated.
It's called Cohen's theorem.
Don't google it! =D

2:36 AM
So if I have F_9, I could take 3^2 and just treat the elements like two distinct $F_3$ together?

@beginner No.
@beginner Try studying from Dummit and Foote.

Hmmm, let's think

It's a nice, clear, albeit dense book.

@pedro balarka told me to do that one

@beginner yes, as far as addition is concerned.

2:38 AM
@beginner OK.

But you need to be careful how you define multiplication.

Okay I have Dummit and Foote open now, I will see how far through it I already am
I'll spend the next 10 hours on it and tell you how I do

@beginner Do the exercises.
That's what will give you an indicator.

yeah I will do them all and see how I go

@PedroTamaroff, what's the time where you are?

2:42 AM
11:42.

Ah, 2 hours ahead

@Kaj WOW! We are in the same time zone.

3:01 AM
well this is turning out delightfully
@Jasper Hi @Jasper

@DonLarynx Hi. Are you at home now?
Well, they still might. It's hard to say.

lol hny
@Jasper WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

@DonLarynx Are you drunk again?
@DonLarynx I find most alcoholic drinks terrible. I don't know why people even drink.
Well, that is not my approach to problems. But maybe I should try it sometimes.

@Jasper Day 8 is coming soon

@DonLarynx WTF is Day 8?
I don't know. Do you mean your date is coming soon?
I really don't know.
Or is Day 8 the name of something?
I am not in touch with current affairs.
I see. I just don't want you to be suspended.
Well, I honestly don't think it makes you feel better if you don't do it. But it's your choice.

3:13 AM
@JasperLoy I think you should ignore Don, Jasper.,

@PedroTamaroff No, I really like him. Sometimes, I wish I were him.
@PedroTamaroff I see what you just did, that deletion, lol.

@Jasper that was me. I am pretty sure @Pedro watches "The Flood".

@JasperLoy Not all of it.

@DonLarynx I don't know what that is. But I wish I were young and hot like you, lol.

@Jasper No. Stick to women.

3:17 AM
@DonLarynx Exactly.
@PedroTamaroff Anyway, it's time you remove that scary mask.

Pedro's avatar is Pedro's choice.

@Pedro likes his grandiose status.

Well, it gives a bad impression of MSE.
@MikeMiller I am really sorry to disappoint you and everyone else that I am not studying this year. But I will figure out what to do with the rest of my life soon. I need to rethink lots of my plans.

@Jasper waiters.stackexchange.com

It's hard to say what will become of me. I might end up a monk even.
@DonLarynx What was that about beginner solving your questions?

3:30 AM
stop

4:18 AM
@DonLarynx I am back.

4:34 AM
I am going to sleep.

@evinda, Thank you very much for giving your precious time to my problem. (Commenting so late because of wi-fi problem.)
So are thise sets distinct?@evinda

why does my keyboard glitch constant?ly
I found a keyboard and it goes one space to the left when I click shift and it changes my volume randomly
Like for example placing this question mar?k
It always goes back and places it further in for some reason, does anyone know wh?y
It's made byHiraHouseLimited
It's only the left shift that is weird
Okay to sum it up, the shift key selects the previous character and the space bar lowers volume, is there some way to fix these two problem?s
@jasper are you seriously not studying this year..?
