@StrixVaria I can get Tyranitar in either. The only difference for me was which legendary was at level 40 and which was level 70.

One of my favorite runs was when a friend and I each ran HG/SS at the same time. We each made an egg and traded it to the other, and we had to solo the whole game with whatever was in the egg.

So we didn't know what we were going to get until it hatched.

@OrigamiRobot I generally don't pay any attention to legendaries.

I'm much more interested in taking bad to mediocre pokemon and making them useful.

@StrixVaria Lugia can use Fly and Surf. I'll take that any day.

@OrigamiRobot Fly is terrible in combat and I always put it on a slave.

Tyranitar was the best.

I'm not a huge fan of Tyranitar.

His stats are too high naturally, so I feel like using him isn't as interesting.

That is a strong moveset, though.

Hyper Beam isn't that great without STAB.

So he gets STAB on Crunch and Rock Slide, which is really nice.

Rock moves are amazing.

I still liked my Jumpluff. Bounce, Leech Seed, Giga Drain, and I think Protect.

Some other stall move.

@StrixVaria I don't remember if there was a Rock/Dark move that had a comparable strength at the time.

@OrigamiRobot If you're going to go for normal it might as well be Return. It's still pretty strong and you don't have to waste a turn every time you use it.

IIRC Dark is still screwed out of powerful attacks, I think Crunch might still be the best. At least they made Dark's default to Physical not Special (considering all dark pokemon were physical in gen 2 that was some BS)

@BenBrocka It only needed to be 100 power with STAB to be comparable.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, but even that's a pretty tall order. There's usually only a couple skills per type with that high of damage

Anyway, I kept Hyper Beam for things that were strong vs all my other attacks.

@OrigamiRobot I wasn't even familiar with that (unsurprising, it was apparently Rhyperior's signature move and I don't think I even ever saw one of those)

Hyperbeam was more popular than others in no small part because it was a (buyable) TM and most final evolution pokemon could learn it

Sometimes the only way to get a superior STAB skill on a pokemon involved a single-use TM (so glad those are gone in Gen 5, if I ever get gen 5) or horrific breeding shenanigans

@BenBrocka Usually an "and" there sometimes, too.

@GraceNote Sometimes yes, but I have never and probably will never breed a pokemon for a move, so I'm not familiar with all the silly requirements

@BenBrocka The father needs to know the move, and the mother needs to be the correct species.

The difficulty comes in if you want the right move and certain IVs or nature.

If I think about it, two of my best Pokemon for actual run through the game had horrible natures. My Lilligant in Gen 5 was Adamant, and my Ninjask in Gen 3 was Modest. They still performed stellar though.

@BenBrocka My Lilligant tanked a Hydreigon's Flamethrower and Dark Pulses until I was out of healing items and still stood for me to beat White. It was incredible. I love my Lilishir-E.

@BenBrocka I actually kinda dislike that style of evolution, and its prevalence in bug types. Gen 4 was a miserable, miserable generation because of this (and the fact that nigh every new bug was Bug/Flying anyway).
