@Pierre303 Hi pierre

@Jinjavajin: hello

@Pierre303 i was away from room,that's why i didn't replayed to you last time

I'm going to check after my pause

@Pierre303 ok

Your profile looks fine to me

@Pierre303 Hi

11:13 AM
@Pierre303 my net connection have a speed of 5 kb/s ,

@Jinjavajin: that's low
@Jinjavajin: 19.9° in the room I'm in. I beat you in the level of annoyance.

@Pierre303 switch that AC on

I don't have that. And It's almost 0° outside today

Hi All

@Pierre, you need a warm scandinavian wool sweater

1:32 PM
@Thorbjørn: will you buy one for me for my birthday?

@Pierre, sorry no, but you could consider browsing at dale.no/en :)

2:11 PM
@ThorbjørnRavnAndersen: But norway is not denmark right?

2:34 PM
@Pierre303 room seems silent

@Pierre303: hi
@Jinjavajin: hi

2:51 PM
@SankarGanesh: hi

I wonder what percent of messages here are some form of "Hi", "Hello", etc

@Rachel pragrammers here don't have time to chat,they busy in coding,so just stop by saying hi,hello etc..

That's true, I just find it amusing :)

3:31 PM
oh hi.

Hi Gaearon, I saw you answered one of my questions yesterday

oh yeah, though not to great luck
good that you found the solution but it's still kinda strange
I guess I'll try to play with it when I have some spare time

Anyone have an opinion on designing the database for user-defined fields? I know I was talking to someone a few days ago about badly design databases....

Q: How to design a database for User Defined Fields?

RachelMy requirements are: Need to be able to dynamically add User-Defined fields of any data type Need to be able to query UDF fields quickly Need to be able to do calculations on UDF fields based on datatype Need to be able to sort UDF fields based on datatype Other Information: I'm looking fo...

4:13 PM
I nearly fell asleep during my meeting where the .NET devs discussed whether we should continue moving forward with ASP.NET MVC or move back to ASP.NET WebForms.

4:45 PM
@Powerlord You mean they're considering moving back? Why?

@Rachel, are you stuck using a SQL database?

@Brant Because the developer really pushing ASP.NET MVC left for the private sector.

NoSQL databases are easier to use for UDFs imo

Doh.
Well, even though you don't know me and I don't know you, I want you to know that if your co-workers whom I also don't know make a decision which you have no influence over or stake in which I disagree with, I will think less of you as a developer and as a person.
I try.

@Brant Remember, I'm a Java guy and have no real say in what the .NET devs do.

4:54 PM
Exactly. Less of you as a person, etc.
;)

Well, strictly speaking I could have weighed in, but the only project I'm currently assigned to is almost doing the equivalent of writing ASP Classic code, so...

hehe

Which also was not my choice, btw.
and no, we can't change it. The original developer for this project left but we're not allowed to rewrite it using sensible things.

Well, on second thought, I'd better stay on your good side, because as soon as Notch opens up some kind of Minecraft API I'm going to be all over you with inane beginner .NET->Java questions like "what's the deal with generics" and "vectors, are you shitting me?"
(the Vector class is pretty much the only thing I remember specifically about Java from the last time I used it in college circa 2002. My brain blocked out the AWT memories to protect me.)

5:21 PM
@instanceofTom: I'm fairly sure we're stuck with a SQL database

@Brant If you use the Vector class, I'll have to hurt you.
It's been deprecated for like a decade now.

@Powerlord Note he said "2002"

@sjohnston Yes, and it was deprecated before 2002.

Heh.

which is like a decade...

5:32 PM
I remember the prof telling us "Remember to cast the object back to whatever it was when you take it out of the vector!"

When I said "decade" it's actually likely closer to 15 years, which makes me wonder why they teach it in college back then.
These days, you use (generic) Lists.
Even if generics are done in the dumbest possible way for backwards compatibility...

We all suspected that our Java prof wasn't exactly the most... proficient guy.

@Brant In his defense, even though Vector was deprecated, Java didn't have Generics in 2002. Those have only been around in Java since 2005.

Yeah, there were definitely no generics back then when I learned it.
I spent a few years in the tech support coal mines and didn't get back into development until 2005 or so, with .net 2.0 which had generics, where I first learned of the concept
"Wow, you mean you can just make a List of... whatever you want? Cool!"
why do we always end up talking about programming in here, anyway?

We were... talking about game dev, yeah that's it!

5:38 PM
You might want to checkout the concept EAV C/R

The Generics chapter of Effective Java second edition is available as a free PDF from Oracle's site.

Entity Attribute Value, potentially with Classes/Relationships
though it can make queries more complex

33 messages moved from The Bridge. Whooosh.

Yeah I'm leading towards EAV now. There won't be any relationships to them, but there will be a lot of queries or reports based on the data

Chat bomb deployed!
kerblam

5:42 PM
One shot, two kills :P
I'm... sorry, I just wanted to give the discussion a wider audience

The funny thing is, programming conversations have a bigger audience in the Gaming room.

The gaming room has a wider audience period.
Let's say "a more topical audience"

It's pretty much the only room on the chat hub that always has something going on.

Yeah, we occasionally gift some activity here and there :P

@Powerlord What's dumb about the way generics work in Java? Honest question, I've never looked into it.
Oh wait:

Q: What is wrong with Java's generics?

MichaelI have seen several times on this site posts that decry Java's implementation of generics. Now, I can honestly say that I have not had any issues with using them. However, I have not attempted to make a generic class myself. So, what are your issues with Java's generic support?

5:47 PM
@Brant Generics in Java are compiler tricks.

Damn you, StackExchange! shakes fist in air
Oh, so a List<string> and a List<Foo> are still just Lists? That's kind of lame.

Wait, why is it lame?

@Brant where would it make a practical difference for you?

@Brant Yup. That type information isn't present during run-time, only compile-time.

@instanceofTom Good point, I guess.

5:49 PM
@Brant, as in what use-case would cause that to be a limitation :-p
:-)

looks at @Powerlord expectantly

I guess if you had a List that's either List<X> or a List<Y> you'd have no way to tell at run time...
...except I'm not sure how you'd end up in that situation
I guess adding a getType() method returning either X or Y is out of question

"Generates a vague sense of malaise" ought to be a valid reason to dislike a language feature, dammit.

@instanceofTom Off the top of my head: You can't write methods like this: public void myMethod(List<String>) and public void myMethod(List<Integer>) as they compile to the same method signature.

@Powerlord actually thats a good example, one i have run up against
i guess java's response is to be more verbose

5:54 PM
If I wanted more examples, I could copy some from the aforementioned chapter of Effective Java. ;)

As nasty as that code is, it was easier to understand than the movie.

lol
thats pretty good

> Oh Oh! Do LISP next!! I'll get you started: (((((((((())))))))))

@Brant that's a measly amount of parentheses
(((()((())))((((())()))())(())()(()))(()((((((((((())))(((())))))))))))()(()))
now that's a real start.

MY EYES! Good lord, I just looked at another dev's Java object for dealing with a form field. It uses reflection to run the set methods for property names... and as far as I can tell, just dies if it runs into a non-existent property in the ServletRequest's params.

Hello guys. Does anybody know what's the culture name of Haitian Creole / Creole/ Kreyole?

You guys are crazy

9:07 PM
@Powerlord, what's wrong with that?

9:20 PM
@Pierre303, no, Norway is not Denmark (even though it used to be, but then the Danish king sided with Napoleon), but it is colder hence they make better sweaters
