To be fair, I mostly skip the first two steps. So that's still six.

8:20 AM
@KevinvanderVelden Tsk, svn.

@FEichinger Hey, it's better then nothing at all.

Also better than TFS

Git, people. Git.

I use svn because I'm too lazy to setup git

@3ventic wat?

8:22 AM
This feels like it's going to be some kind of religious debate.

How does that work? - SVN requires a seperate server, git is just "git init"

the reason I use source control in the first place is to have a version on a separate server, where I can easily get it

Well then install dropbox =p
Still, if you have ssh access to that box you already have a git capable server

it's hard to deploy from dropbox
@KevinvanderVelden but I'm too lazy to set it up
which brings us back to my first sentence

And my confusion is with your idea that SVN is simpler to set up =p

8:25 AM
@Arperum You should be glad I was busy in another room.

but it is

How on Earth is svn easier to set up?

How? Did you get a preconfigured SVN server or something?

idk, it worked pretty much straight out of apt-get
apart from adding a user
but that's just adding a line to a text file

How does git work any less "straight out of apt-get"?

8:28 AM
apt-get install git
git init --bare ~/Repo

Locally:
git clone username@hostname:Repo

the setting up a user part

@KevinvanderVelden Four leading spaces.
@3ventic git config

@FEichinger user to log in to svn he meant
git config is not equivelant.

I like git alright, but it really has a lot of major flaws too. SVN fills in some of those flaws

@Ktash yeah with larger flaws

8:30 AM
@KevinvanderVelden Different
Have you ever tried to use git with binary files? Especially large ones? Doesn't work

svn works, why should I change?

> I like javascript alright, but it really has a lot of major flaws too. PHP fills in some of those flaws.

Requiring contact with a server for everything and having .svn folders everywhere are pretty damn big flaws

It's true, subversion use makes kittens cry. Very saddening. :(

@FEichinger This statement is false true

8:31 AM
@Ktash that doesn't work with svn either

@KevinvanderVelden I'm not saying it does. I'm just saying each repo type has its own flaws, and git has some glaring ones too. Use what works best for the situation

I don't see how requiring contact with the server where the script is supposed to run is a flaw

@KevinvanderVelden ... as opposed to .git folders everywhere?

@Ktash so your saying that SVN fills in a flaw... by having the same flaw?
@Ktash 1 .git in the repo root as opposed to a .svn folder in every subfolder?
Yes of course you're gonna need to store configuration and data somewhere, but the way .svn does it is just plain dumb

@KevinvanderVelden That wasn't a flaw I was saying SVN does better. I was pointing to a flaw in git, regardless of SVN. I'm merely saying

8:34 AM
@Ktash but but, your point was that SVN fillls in some of those flaws

11 mins ago, by Arperum
This feels like it's going to be some kind of religious debate.
I think @Arperum was right

Every flaw you've pointed out so far has been followed with a "Oh yeah SVN does this to actually"

@KevinvanderVelden Yes. Git and SVN share some flaws, and have some differing flaws. As I said, to each their own

@3ventic Well we can't have that, best we immediately change topic to how I should have been asleep many hours ago.

Eeeh sure, except that so far you have not shown a flaw in git that svn does not share or makes worse

8:35 AM
@KevinvanderVelden Fine. You want an example. Sub repos. SVN does those infinitely better than Git's mangled mess. Or administration. SVN has a lot more tools because of its age for things like that

There we go! That is indeed what I wanted =p

@3ventic I'm a visionary!

@Arperum no the internet is just predictable

Alright. It's late. I was going to bed before I popped in here, and I think I will go back to that momentum. Night all.

8:37 AM
Night

@KevinvanderVelden Could you stop being wrong and accept that I am right?
@Ktash Night!

I still don't see a reason to switch so I'm going to stick with svn

@3ventic switching true, I was merely against your statement that SVN was easier to set up than git

Q: Do you have enough Slots to support 3 offensive Spells?

RaikanIs it possible to support 3 Damage Spells with each its own support gems with lategame gear? Would you have to sacrifice support-spells to achieve this? Not the topic, background: My goal at the moment is Freezing Pulse + Ice Spear. One for the Shotgun melee range/damage, the other for the snip...

I think I need to call Microsoft...

Q: What is the point of having any friends?

HowlinWulfIt is a well known thing these days in nearly all (especially Mobile) games, to have to add friends and invite them to play with you, in exchange for certain benefits. Basically, having there players do most of the marketing for them - brilliant. I want to know if there is any point in having fr...

@3ventic boo
@3ventic wat

Hmm...
My explorer.exe crashes when I create a new file

@3ventic Your computer sounds broken. Throw it and everything you've ever connected to it away. Preferably dispose of the remains by fire.

@3ventic let me tell you why: you're going to find yourself having to work with git sooner or later, and the SVN to Git transition is famously painful. The sooner the better
Also -- things with git are exponentially simpler when you start out with just one person developing locally

@badp I do some things with git

9:30 AM
(that said -- you could say the same of vim, and I'm a nano aficionado)

I use nano/pico

(but git is slightly less arcane and arbitrary and shitty :P)

though I usually prefer winscp + notepad++ instead
I use a git every now and then when doing things with github projects

@badp nano is very useful! For the same tasks as notepad but on a terminal connection
Nothing else

notepad isn't that useful...
it doesn't even treat \n as a new line but requires \r too

9:35 AM
@KevinvanderVelden nano notepad best notepad

@badp agreed, due to the thing @3ventic mentioned

all I really need is a sublime text console emulator

Also, I'm not sure, does nano lock up when you open megabyte large files as notepad does?

no

It took a few seconds to open that file... on Windows
but now I can navigate it just fine

From the times before I had set up log rotation

Opened just fine in nano
it took a few dozen seconds though

NANO IS WINNER FOREVER

Notepad refuses to open files larger than a few megabytes IIRC

9:44 AM
no Notepad is actually trying to make sense of "/cygdrive/d/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team\ Fortress\ 2/hl2/hl2_textures_000.vpk"

I should've used notepad (cygpath -w /cygdrive/d/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team\ Fortress\ 2/hl2/hl2_textures_000.vpk)

max seems to be somewhere between 200MB and 1.8GB

@KevinvanderVelden Notepad is still going at it, btw
We're at the three minute marker

9:48 AM
notepad opened the 200MB file I had in a second...

maybe it's because it's a binary file?
line length is an important factor

maybe

I can't find text files that large easily
well I can but can't bother downloading them

10:03 AM
20 minutes!

10:16 AM
30 minutes!
CAN NOTEPAD DO IT

How much memory is it taking up by now?

253 MB

Huh, that's not bad

It is opening a 100 MB file

10:25 AM
@Wipqozn but it was such a pretty fire

> the Embassy issued an apology for the message, saying: “We meant to mark an event in history & celebrate our strong friendship today.”
"Hey guys, remember that time we burned your house down? Good times!"

It was more like the house of their boss ...

It's the basis of frenemyship
The Wipqozn from a few weeks ago would've understood
You still haven't gotten over @agent dumping you, huh? :(

@badp Hey now, I dumped him! @agent86 didn't dump me.

pats @Wipqozn on the back slowly

@fredley Let's just reverse the whole human right system. Having rights is for pussies anyway.

@Arperum You laugh, but he also wants out of the EU court of human rights too

yesss

@fredley I was thinking he was being stupid yesterday for his eye for an eye mentality already. But it seems it's way worse then I thought it was.

10:37 AM
@Arperum You know what though, if Scotland gets independence then the remnants of the UK will swing even harder to the right, as we'd lose all the predominantly left-wing Scottish MPs.

Can someone try to get him arrested for terrorism? He's guilty until proven innocent.

Fun times for all. How hard is it to emigrate to Norway I wonder?
@Arperum Citizen's arrest

@fredley I think I might join. Because Beligium is getting more and more fucked up too.

The thing is I know people who've travelled to Iraq and Syria (for teaching). Under his proposed laws they would be very seriously at risk. It's scary stuff.

The only thing is that I just bought a house and have to live in it for at least three years for various financial reasons.

10:41 AM
Just flee really fast, noone will notice

@fredley It's also scandinavia and thus part of the area known for metal.

@Arperum Less interested in metal
As in, not at all interested in metal

Well that's your problem

@fredley I might be seriously interested. As in: half of my days off this year were taking in function of some festival.

There goes my theory CC: @OrigamiRobot

10:43 AM
And I have three still available that will probably be used for some other festival thing when I find some more things that I want to go to.
@StrixVaria So they want the weekend to be available to everyone who starts in the seasons.
Also: GOD FUCKING DAMMIT. WHAT IS IT WITH THIS WEEKEND.
I'm going to a festival friday (got a free press ticket)
was invited for two festivals saturday (again, free press tickets), but I have a family reunion. And I had the option of getting a VIP arrangement for some racing thing.
And now this too.
And there was something else that I am forgetting, I think.

@Arperum Gaming?

@MartinSojka D3 season (ladder) starts friday evening it seems.
No other gaming related stuff that I know of that I had to do now. Music has a higher priority in general for me.

@Arperum minecraft?

@KevinvanderVelden I would place festivals above that. So that wouldn't have made it to the list. As you might know I really like music.

Time for a festival in Minecraft!

10:55 AM
@MartinSojka I sort of expect @KevinvanderVelden to set one up now. I also expect him to crash the server while doing so.

Well I now know at least one easy way of doing just that

@KevinvanderVelden You'll find more ways. I'm sure of it.

I'll do my best :)

There's a bunch of mods to add music streaming to Minecraft, but not sure if any are on the server or how good they'd work.

There probably aren't any on the server
Though there are tools to make things with noteblocks

11:00 AM
@MartinSojka Metal festival in minecraft
Edit the worldgen so that everything is iron
SO METAL

Everything is already copper, that's also metal

@StrixVaria And I'm probably out of town this weekend :(

Heh, we're expecting a lot of rain in the next week or so, so our goverment is lowering the waterlevel
Holland is cool, we can just do that.

@KevinvanderVelden I've read some articles that Belgium had somewhere around 500-1000 billion litres of rain in the last day...
And most water from Belgium flows to the Netherlands, so yea, it might be needed.
@KevinvanderVelden Yea, because half of your country is under sea level...

11:20 AM
... I just found out that a certain variable exists for the sole purpose of always being the text "-", because there is no such thing as a serial for these things...

@StrixVaria I just want actual patch notes!

@Arperum Literals have to much overhead, you should avoid them and always start a HTTPS connection to a remote server, perform a challenge-response authentication and then retrieve the text.

@KevinvanderVelden If the moron who wrote this code would've had the vaguest clue about anything he might've done that. As is stands he reintroduced every single sql-injection issue I removed.

Well done!

@Arperum A good practice in Java is to make every variable "final". See what breaks. Leave what doesn't break as "final".

11:24 AM
@OrigamiRobot Yeah although I read the PTR notes so a lot of it's got to be the same.

@MartinSojka This is some VB code though, I'm making a java desktopapp from part of a website made in VB.

I know, I just wanna see the finalized stuff.

Because you should be able to access the website without internet access.

And all the legendary gems

11:36 AM
Oh XCode, how I love to hate thee

Q: Why am I so unfit?

FlauntingI am playing through the campaign on Arma 3 and have noticed that unlike most of its mods the player get physically exhausted very quickly while sprinting. Even if I am not sprinting, walking uphill causes me to become out of breath relatively quickly. Walking - about 300m Sprinting - about 100...

@fredley XCode deserve every single bit of hate it gets. And then some.

12:23 PM
@GnomeSlice Thank you much~

Uh oh.

Q: My Staff of Magnus is Missing

venkelosI am playing Skyrim, and one of my Hearthfire houses, Lakeview, has dealt me a small issue. For some time, my Enchanter's Tower was the home of my Staff of Magnus, hanging in the center slot of the upstairs weapon rack. Then, a few days ago, it disappeared.
