Q: How to make a looping boat ride?

JohnOk, so now that boat elevators were fixed, how can you set a boat to infinitely repeat a loop? I.E. I have a boat follow a current I made, and it ends up several levels lower then the start. How can I raise the boat back up?

Q: trying to remember the name of an old C64 platform (I think) game

ChrisI'm trying to remember the name of a game I played on the Commodore 64 I had as a kid in the mid 1980s. I'm pretty sure it was a platform game with horizontal scrolling. The play went from left to right. The character was an animal, possibly a frog, almost certainly green. The main landscape s...

3:19 AM
I'm not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but just out of curiosity, did anyone who received the Gaming Swag wash their t-shirt, and have the colour wash off?
I emailed Jeff and he suggested to ask around to see if it happened to anyone else.

@KevinY Damn, that sucks. :(

Mhm. :/
Now it looks like there are two bronze badges and a silver badge.

Ouch, heh. I don't have the Gaming shirt to compare, but I haven't noticed any fading with my Stack Overflow shirt even though I've washed it several times.

Yeah, my Stack Exchange one is fine as well.
I think they used a different printing process with the Gaming ones.

Ah, hm

6 hours later…
9:59 AM
@KevinY Oh man, that sucks D:
I only just wore mine for the first time yesterday :/ I'll let you know

3 hours later…
12:45 PM
Yo.

1:05 PM
da

Ma. Na.

Cl!
Oh wait, you guys aren't quoting elements.

Manacle?

heh
Yo, it's John Carmack being cool for an hour and a half
Also, being able to fullscreen a video and still talk in here is the coolest thing.

@Mana The coolest thing I've been doing for a good 2 years.

1:22 PM
Well sorry, maan.

That's neat. I got this popup saying I had less than 4 seconds to post my edit.

Wait what? SE-targeted popups?

Just, above the edit box.

1:38 PM
@Mana Would you like some reps enlargement pills perhaps?

Just fill out this form with your personal information and we'll send you a free t-shirt! Oh wait.

@ArdaΞ I had my edit timer run out while I was editing my post before. I didn't get to edit it.

@GnomeSlice Well, that's the whole point of the timer's running out.

@badp But I was in the process of editing it, and then it's like oh, too bad, you can't edit this anymore

Hrmph, GlovePIE won't recognise my gamepad.

1:45 PM
Ohhhhh
that edit box
haha yeah that's been a feature forever bros

Seriously?
That took you... 15 minutes?

Rude! I just came back from eating breakfast and discussing the role of a realtor with my mum, man.

Breakfast?

@Mana Your m oh, I'd better not go there.

@Ardarf I decided to fit in with your impression of me as a little child.

1:49 PM
@Mana Not what I meant.

????????????????????????????????????????

!

@Mana He-Bro

WE BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS, WE BROOOOOOOOOOOOOS

No, I don't want to skip 1-3-2, stop asking!

1:51 PM
He-Bro

I appreciate it if you stopped stuff from asploding near me tho

Hrm, I need to get this thing working.

Is...Is that a...naw.

@Mana Yea.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw.

1:57 PM
Man, I pray Hammerfight is a short game
I haven't been able to solve any one level in less than 10 tries so far.

@GnomeSlice btw I was playing Toribash quite a bit yesterday

I count, um, there's the combat tutorial, worms 1, worms 2, bees 1... this is bees 2. This is the fourth level.
>_<

@badp Doesn't even launch for me

I mean, the sword is infinitely more fun and easy to use than the chain and mace... but it's also much closer range, and now I have stuff asploding on contact.

Hey, it's @Fabian. How's it going man?

2:02 PM
What do I know, I now passed the level.
Okay. I got Ch1P4 at the fourth try. And it was a boss fight :/
Rating: blue ribbon. Again. :/
Um. Now I have a red bowl filling with... wine. I don't get if that's a victory or a defeat meter.
All I know is it's going up.

@GnomeSlice I...uh, what? I don't know what else to say to that.

Not many people do.

Developer calls accurate Borderlands 2 report "shoddy journalism" (Eurogamer published the scoop before Game Informer could publish its 'exclusive' feature story about the announcement, and somehow that's Eurogamer's fault.)

Q: How can I prevent the Night Light ones from exploding?

badpIn Chapter 1, Part 3, Section 2 of Hammerfight I now get to face the "Night Lights"/"Light Ones", who have the poor habit of exploding, taking an awful lot of my health in the process. Obviously, I can't ignore them, or they'll just asplode Chief Sayadi instead. How can I safely handle explosive...

2:18 PM
@Mana Pretty cool, huh?

@GnomeSlice There's this one replay where a guy rips off his own hand and throws it to decapitate his opponent's broken body.

@Mana Hah, that's awesome.
Were you playing online?

If that's not cool I don't know what is.
Yeah.
I suck at it but I'm improving slowly.

You should check out some of the tutorials.
On Youtube.

@badp Maybe they will realize that with the Internet gaming magazines are fairly obsolete now.

2:21 PM
Basic stuff, like 'how to pull off arms'

Wow, Hammerfight is badly written.

@GnomeSlice Low bandwidth makes me hesitant to do so.

@Wipqozn Hey! I sure want to pay money to get news from two months ago!

I suppose.

@badp EXactly.

2:24 PM
(One month to get the article out from the main edition of the magazine, another one to get it translated and make it to the local edition. I'm looking at you, Chip, but even "doing-it-right" magazines like Wired pull that crap. A lot of UK material from the July edition made it right into the August issue of the Italian edition. I was pretty disappoint.)

magazines still work for some things, but for gaming it doesn't make any sense. The people they are marketed for are the same people who will always have Internet access, and in turn a plethora of reliable gaming news outlets to choose from. For free.

Perhaps if I looked at the June issue of the US edition of Wired, I'll again find the article about animals and the fur shaking speed thereof, or the global leader social networking on twitter map.

I miss my Gaming Magazine subscriptions.
I liked to read them.

@GnomeSlice Which is fine. There are still people who will buy them, but the vast majority bought it for the latest gaming news. With the Internet they are are only bought by the people who "like to read them"

@Wipqozn You make it sound so ridiculous when you say it like that. =[

2:27 PM
That's because from a business perspective it is.
The market just doesn't make sense anymore.

So I'm annoyed that, when I tether with my mobile phone, I'm actually using a transparent proxy, that pretty much does works, until it doesn't.

@badp ...it works until it doesn't?
I'm assuming it breaks a lot?

@Wipqozn Yeah, isn't that how most things operate?

@Wipqozn Actually not, but it breaks constantly on some pages

@badp I see. That's annoying.

2:30 PM
For example I wanted to investigate those fancy bladeless fans and see if I could find something in stores in Italy, but when I try to visit the Dyson site I only get this:
Received a malformed response.

@badp Miles Dyson would be rolling in his cage.
Then again, he invented the Terminator.

@Powerlord ...what?

(The HTML stuff was nicely put in by Chrome.)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day, commonly abbreviated T2, is a 1991 science fiction action film directed, co-written, and co-produced by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick. A sequel to 1984's The Terminator, it follows the characters of Sarah Connor (Hamilton, reprising her role from the original film) and her son John (Furlong) as they are pursued by a new, more advanced Terminator, the liquid metal shape-shifting T-1000 (Patrick). Schwarzenegger reprises his role as the Terminator, but while the character was the antagonist of...

@Powerlord Miles Dyson invented the Terminator?

2:35 PM
Also, did I say cage earlier? I meant grave.... I was thinking of the Faraday cage when I wrote that.

@badp You should be glad. It'd be a lot slower if you weren't.

In other news, this is happening in a few hours: teamfortress.com/post.php?id=6004
@ArdaΞ um... caching?

@badp Caching, compression, that sort of thing.

My mobile phone has like 60 MB of RAM. Not much room to do any caching.

@badp It's done by the proxy, not your phone.

2:38 PM
Also, it's transparent (I didn't set up anything), so it can't really do any kind of fancy stuff except adding headers etc.

@badp Exactly, that's why the proxy.
@badp The proxy is caching.

...
I might've chosen the word wrong, it really can't be a proxy in the strict meaning of the word.

@badp What do you believe the strict meaning of the word proxy is then?

I thought it was a variation of Chicken Pox, for a while anyway.

A proxy is a piece of software you tell your browser to make requests to, instead of making normally requests directly to the domain names.

2:41 PM
@badp It's an intermediary.

I'm not telling Chrome to make requests to my mobile, it's my mobile that's deciding on its own it must do some mangling processing to traffic going through.

@badp Are you sure it's your mobile?

"The Mangler" is a short story by Stephen King, first published in the December 1972 issue of Cavalier magazine, and later collected in King's 1978 collection Night Shift. Setting "The Mangler" is set in an American town, and the action largely takes place in an industrial laundromat. Stephen King has stated that, among the many jobs he took to support his family before he became famous, he worked in an industrial laundromat. Plot summary A police detective investigating a sudden rash of grisly deaths caused by an industrial laundry press machine discovers that, through a series of unfo...

@ArdaΞ The headers added are like:
X-Nokia-BEARER: 3G
Is that convincing enough?

@GnomeSlice I've read Night Shift. Good book.

2:43 PM
@ArdaΞ Mhm.

@badp Not necessarily, one moment.

netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/transcript/… - here's netalyzr complaining about unexpected header
050,643  test-8| Line 30:Header: X-Nokia-BEARER: 3G
050,644  test-8| Line 36:Header: X-Network-info: UMTS,,unsecured

@badp It shouldn't complain about an X- header.

oh, there's also
050,644  test-8| Line 38:Header: Proxy-Connection: keep-alive
so it IS doing proxy-like stuff

@badp Or it's a proxy doing stuff.

2:44 PM
I'm now confused. Perhaps the proxy is on the ISP side.

That's what I've been thinking all along.

@ArdaΞ Again, if it really was a proxy I'd have to set it up.

I know I linked this in yesterday, but I've made it easier to understand what I'm asking about in opinions.

@badp Nope.

2:45 PM
Proxies can also be enforced by your ISP.

@ArdaΞ Fucking with my packets is not proxying, it's fucking with my packets.

@badp Actually, you need to proxy in order to fuck with packets.
At least you need to to fuck with packets other than your own, I suppose.

packets are connection level (TCP/UDP), proxies are application level (HTTP/etc.)
wrong abstraction level - try again

Do you know what a proxy server is?
It's merely something acting as an intermediary.
What you're talking about is a HTTP proxy, but proxies are not limited to that.
They can indeed run on the connection level.

They still operate at the application layer.

2:49 PM
Nope. Not necessarily.

If they're not at the application layers, they're not proxies.

@badp Then what are they?

Perhaps you're thinking of firewalls.

TOR is not a proxy?
Nope. They operate on the transport layer.

GLENN DROVER

Red Rover. Glenn Drover.
Range Rover. Glenn Drover.
She steps into the kitchen
Says
“It’s Over.”
He
Smiles at her
Says
“That rhymes with Glenn Drover.”
She
Says
“Who?”
He
“The guy from that poem we’re in.”
She weeps.
Roger. Over. Glenn. Drover.
Bend Over.
Ben Dover.
Ben Dover’s Slutty Mummies.

2:50 PM
@Mana Wait, what?

@ArdaΞ Yes. This is transport layer stuff we're talking about.

@badp Transport layer != application layer.

My browser generated a packet going to dyson.com

In fact, certain proxies (aka tunnels) operate on the link layer.

@GnomeSlice I'm not quite sure. It's an excerpt from RPS' feature on AoE3 that seems to come entirely out of nowhere.

2:52 PM

As such, all ISPs are proxies in some form.

if this was purely application level, since dyson.com is not the proxy address, the packet stops at the transport layer, where it would be forwarded appropriately and never hit the application layer at all.
If it isn't, then it's not just application level.

@Mana I don't even see it on that page oh there it is.

Then it's not just a proxy.

@badp Ah, but you were saying "If they're not at the application layers, they're not proxies.", which is what I disagreed with.

2:53 PM
I still repeated that one second ago - proxies are application level things.
This is a firewall/packet filter/etc.

SOCKS is an Internet protocol that routes network packets between a client and server through a proxy server. Socks5 additionally provides authentication so only authorized users may access a server. Practically, a SOCKS server will proxy TCP connections to an arbitrary IP address as well as providing a means for UDP packets to be forwarded. One use of SOCKS is to allow connections to be made through a firewall. History The protocol was originally developed by David Koblas, a system administrator of MIPS Computer Systems. After MIPS was taken over by Silicon Graphics in 1992, Kobl...

@badp Still wrong.
@Powerlord SOCKS is not the only type of proxy.

@ArdaΞ No, it isn't, but it's an older one.

Allow me to demonstrate.
A tunnel is a proxy.

Yikes, badp has too many sites listed in his profile for me to invite him to a room, unless I decrease the zoom on my browser.

2:56 PM
@GnomeSlice Sounds like a bug, report it on meta

@Mana Report what? Oh.

@ArdaΞ [citation-needed]

@GnomeSlice Sounds like a bug, report it on meta.SO

@Mana Oh, no way.
That place is scary.

what

2:57 PM
In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request according to its filtering rules. For example, it may filter traffic by IP address or protocol. If the request is validated by the filter, the proxy provides the resource by connecting to the relevant server and reques...

also why did editing my post send it twice arrrrrgh

That place is scary.
@Mana I only see it once, no nevermind.

> In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server

A tunnel is also a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients to other servers.
@badp Yes, right. Does your mobile not connect to your ISP?

I stopped reading there

2:58 PM
Because in that case, you should totally sell that thing. Could be worth millions, internet access sans ISP.

screw everything about this internet connection, I'm so tired of having to request to send messages or get websites twice before things actually happen.

@ArdaΞ My browser does not connect to the proxy, it connects to dyson.com
or at least, that what it sees

@badp How do you know?
Have you ran a traceroute?

thus, not a fucking proxy. You get nothing. You lose. Good day sir.

Does it connect directly to dyson.com
No intermediate server

2:59 PM
