A week of sea base reminded me how much I missed doing it every day
Oh yeah, there's a reason we start in confined water
I think the first confined water dive for Open Water Diver is just Discover Scuba (under the direct supervision of an instructor, students descend in confined water, breathe, maybe swim around a bit, and ascend)
In fact I think if you do Discover Scuba that counts for Open Water Diver
Sea Base does an Instructor Development Course and I qualify for it, but you pay it back by working there, same as Divemaster Academy
And I can't really commit to a full season probably
Oh no Dive 1 is a little more than Disccover Scuba, but the skills portion is in shallow water (breathe compressed air normally, clear a regulator, recover a refulator, clear a partially flooded mask, and breathe from an alternate air source)
and then you swim around in deeper water for a bit, read your SPG, recognize hand signals, and ascend properly
(this is per my 2013 Instructor Manual so it may have changed)
