@Exeggutor What text editor do you use? We're in a section that uses rspec, and it's saying Sublime Text can't rspec easily?

@Niro Just use Microsoft Word
Also serious suggestion is that it looks like Atom has an rspec plugin
Looks like Visual STudio Code supports it too
Both are completely free editors

@Wipqozn Okay. I'll go back to Atom, I guess. It's auto-fill keeps messing me up because the exercise uses a class called Player, and then objects called player, so it keeps trying to auto-fill player when I need Player.

@Niro I wouldn't dismiss visual studio code. It's honestly really good.
Works fine on mac if that's what you're using

VS Code is good
I've never used atom

12:27 AM
@ToxicFrog Yes I do! They work SO WELL

user15026
(I just ate the whale)

(yum)

@Wipqozn I'm not using a Mac.

user15026
It was a very tasty whale (it was tangerine Crystal Light, because I had it already mixed up in my pitcher in the fridge so that was easy)

@Niro How's the class going so far anyways?

12:33 AM
@Niro I've never used rspec. I use vs code but I have no strong preferences for editor. I've used gedit and vim and atom also.

@Wipqozn So far so good, I think!

@Exeggutor Vim is what all the cool kids use
Assuming you're using a Unix based system, including Mac
By the time I left my last job I used a combination of Vim and VS Code
Since depending on what I was doing I preferred one over the other

vim is awful, don't recommend it to people learning to code for the first time

@GodEmperorDune I wasn't

@Wipqozn cool, sometimes its hard to piece the hipster language barrier

12:41 AM
Basically when I remote into a box it's vim, on my local it's a mixture of Vim and VS Code. VS Code was mostly for coding small tasks or greater, where as vim was good for just making a few quick changes to a file or reviewing some code.
At my new job it's a windows shop so it's Visual Studio, which I actually really like
It's improved significantly since I used it during my first year of uni it seems
Although it was Eclipse that killed IDE for me
Someone was like "Use Eclipse it's cool"
I tried it, it was the worst IDE I ever used, so I tried out Vim and it was great

@Wipqozn eclipse is terrible but it dies on big things
and is that much worse

Q: Witchery spirit world and any other mob

KiwibuddySo I've done a bit of research on my quest to find an answer for this, so I know a few vague things. I get an error message in chat, "Unable to find NPC" but I can...

Gil SandI'm not exactly sure this fits here, but I think it might ! The question is quite simple : Over the lifetime of Starcraft 2 (and therefore, PUBG), did more marines died, or more PUBG players? There are way more PUBG players, and at least 80-90 players die per game, every 25-30 minutes (even 20...

Q: WoW-Why Do We Need to Research How to Play?

wingweaver84WoW seems to make a big deal out of "learning to play your class",otherwise you're chewed out for it big time when losing in raids or battlegrounds. Why,in a game,is it required to actively learn how to play said game?I don't care about that stuff,hence I don't,but I would like to know why it see...

I'm currently refactoring a codebase which started in Java 4 days to use Generics
Loads of stuff where I'm like "How does this even work? The function is called GetDifferences and returns a list of Differences, but then it calls getHistory, which calls GetModifications, which returns a List of Modifications, but when I apply those Generics, it gives an error? AARGH"

12:05 PM
I've never had a problem using Generics in Java, but creating them has always been difficult for me.

@MBraedley Most of it is largely trivial, but we have like 6000 warnings
and I think like 90% of those are related to generics

12:35 PM
I wasn't certain that was where you meant lmao

really, wikipedia only has data up to 2013?
This is a list of countries by carbon dioxide emissions emissions per capita from 1990 through 2011. All data were calculated by the US Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC), mostly based on data collected from country agencies by the United Nations Statistics Division. Countries are ranked by their metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per capita in 2009. The data only consider carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and cement manufacture, but not emissions from land use such as deforestation. Emissions from international shipping or bunker...

I just resubbed to WoW, stop making me want to play Runescape again!

@SaintWacko Why not both! (srsly I'm always fishing in my raid)

@Jutschge Ooh, that's a good idea

2:53 PM
you could do 2 raids at once, that would be totally doable and not completely impossible

I'd have to start a new Runescape character
Because I don't want to pay for members right now
And my old character is very thoroughly members

@Unionhawk Ok I wouldn't recommend doing a RS raid and a wow raid at the same time. Fishing is less... click intensive

Although on the other hand, I also hear that Jagex has gotten really, really shitty by now

@SaintWacko only for RS3

Microtransactions and p2w out the wazoo

2:54 PM
still... 11$

Yeah, when I played it was $5
I was still playing when it went up to $6, but I was grandfathered in at $5

There aren't really any MTX on osrs. You can buy membership bonds but that's something I can get along with since it helps against goldfarmers (at least to a certain degree)

@SaintWacko I know someone who used to work there and it doesn't appear to be a new thing

@Jutschge that and bot detection is vastly improved

@Ronan I mean more in the gamer-facing sense
Making the game very pay-to-win
It wasn't always that way
Jagex used to be very against that sort of thing

2:56 PM
Yup. And they recently just released a ton of updates to make botting harder in general
RIP ardy knights and antifire shield

Then they apparently got sold to some Chinese company :(
@Jutschge Wait what?
No more antifire shield?

@SaintWacko nono it's still there but you have to complete dragonslayer to equip it.
It's mostly because green dragons was a heavily botted place

@Jutschge Oh, that's alright
The place I always hung out was those black dragons in the underground place
With fairies and stuff?
That you had to use the mushroom ring to get to?
I'd just sit down there with a crossbow and farm dragon bones
And hide

Yeah you can use an egg on the evil chicken statue in Zanaris to get there after a quest IIRC

And hope for a visage
Never got one

2:58 PM
I mean the visage has a 1:10k droprate
That's a lot of dragons

Best drop I ever got was doing God Wars stuff with a group. We got a god sword piece (or something)

I think my biggest drop was a pair of ranger boots from a clue scroll (45m at the time)
My 2nd biggest was a barrows piece worth 1.5m so yeah...
Although right now I like farming Vorkath (new boss). It's about 1.5-2.5m gp/hr depending on your drop luck. The only downside is that you're pretty much dead if you don't look at the screen for a second

Okay, I'm under 5000 warnings
Not bad for half a day of work

@Nzall What did you start at?

@Exeggutor I think somewhere arond 5800

3:03 PM
I loved clue scrolls

can't really remember

@Nzall That is a pretty good chunk, but man that's still a lot to go :(

@SaintWacko When was the last time you played?

@Exeggutor It's not that bad. Most of that is just technical debt from before generics. Relatively easy to solve, but just a lot of work

My other thing was afking in the... slayer cave thing? Killing... hellbeasts? helldogs? Hellhounds! with my... um... set of armor that heals me when I hit things

3:04 PM
Sometimes I like doing work like that, where you can kind of just zone out and go on autopilot and be productive.

It's been a while

Yeah, it's fun listening to Towelliee and Youtube and so forth while doing it

@Wipqozn I'm getting a Switch for my sister for her birthday and I decided to gift her my copy of Mario Tennis (along with the game she actually wanted) because I was finding it kind of anti-fun. She's a much more casual gamer so she'll probably enjoy playing local multiplayer rather than online competitive.

The main issue is that if you make so many changes, it's pretty much impossible to test them manually, so you're relying on unit tests and compiler errors

@Nzall This is true, but a lot of times in these cases they're "safe" changes too.

3:07 PM
@Exeggutor Yeah, until you get to a situation where you think you found a logical error, but you can't test it because you don't have the software installed for that part

Ave
Fortnite: The TV Show will premier on August the 12, 2019!
oh no
ooh it's Disnay GDI

Right now I'm mostly focusing my efforts on the business layer: services and beans

@Nzall I would probably make a note of that and do it in a separate batch of changes.

@Jutschge I'm honestly not sure. It's been a long time
Anyway, hellhounds drop clue scrolls
So I got pretty good at doing those
I kinda want to log in and see if my account and all my stuff are still there
But I'm at work

Ugh I haven't played Octopath Traveler in like 2 days and I can't focus now.
I haven't even gotten all the characters yet but I'm hooked.

3:10 PM
@Exeggutor Related issue: we only have about 60% unit test coverage on our services, so I'll have to do some manual testing as well

@Nzall 60% is admirable, though. I feel like that's higher than average.

@SaintWacko If you've last logged in pre EOC you probably won't recognize the game anymore

@Jutschge What's EOC?

And all OSRS accounts from previous accounts have to start at 0
@SaintWacko Evolution of combat. It's more MMORPG-ish combat now

Oh yeah

3:12 PM
@Exeggutor 55% line coverage, 44% branch coverage according to my local tests, but those don't run all tests

I think I stopped playing before RS3?
So is OSRS RS1, or is it RS2 graphics?

Yeah then you'll probably find a completely different game
It's RS2
All the game from 2007 (the last included skill was hunter) and they added some completely new stuff
All of the new additions perfectly fit into the game though so it's pretty cool

@Dragonrage Did you Google it?

@fredley not, id rather not lose access to the internet at work

@Jutschge Oh!

3:16 PM
@fredley Did he google what?

That's excellent

@Nzall Probably not.

Also there's OSRS mobile now

So OSRS is pretty much exactly what I was used to

@Yuuki No, i mean, what should he have googled?

3:17 PM
@Jutschge Yeah, but the beta is only available to members right now

Which is a great thing for OSRS and a terrible thing for productivity

Trust me, I'm keeping on eye on it :P

True

As soon as the beta is open to non-members, I'll be playing it

@Nzall Yes, "Did he Google 'what'?", to which the answer is "probably not".

3:17 PM
Does OSRS members cost any less than RS3 members?

no

no but IIRC you get access to both games

Bah

@Jutschge yes

Guess I'll be sticking to free

3:18 PM
18 hours ago, by Dragonrage
@fredley i just today realized why porkchat is called porkchat

I really want to like RS3 but that's too much MTX even for me

Have they added anything to free?

@fredley hue

Or is everything getting added to members?

@GodEmperorDune saturation

3:18 PM
Yeah they actually added 2 new non-member quests recently

@SaintWacko There are a couple new novice quests iirc but other than that not really

@fredley value

@Unionhawk Bah, that's annoying

@GodEmperorDune o/

But yeah... it's still a subscription based MMO if you want to have the full content

3:19 PM
*welcome to the circus of value*

You can however buy membership with gold. If you're familiar with flipping it's super easy

@GodEmperorDune intensity
@Jutschge like on the GE?
Or is that a new thing

Yup. Well you can also normally trade between players but I rarely see that

@Exeggutor Update: our build server has 58% line coverage, 46% Branch coverage accordign to cobertura

I guess you could get 14 days of membership in about a week or two. And once you have that getting the 3m required shouldn't be a problem to sustain it

3:22 PM
Damn, is it that easy to make money now?

I guess it's about the same. But inflation is a thing in MMOs :P

I guess I could log in to my old account and transfer money over too
I think I have a few mil there

RS3 money isn't worth a lot though

Oh, right, it's not OSRS

Afaik it's not too difficult to get billions in RS3. In OSRS that's still a ton

3:25 PM
is rs3 int64 at least lol

3:40 PM
This is fun, I managed to make our getObjects methods (which we use everywhere we don't need special queries or transactions) generic

@Dragonrage such optimism

trying out Haskell rn- very confused

try Prolog

It might sound weird, but if you're interested in functional programming, you might want to work with JavaScript
JS code commonly uses a major part of functional programming: continuation passing
That is, implementing program flow by passing as an argument a function to call upon the completion of another function

@murgatroid99 I use that all the time with my async api stuff!
I'll have to look more into it

7:10 PM
@murgatroid99 how is that different from a callback?

@GodEmperorDune That is what a callback is

oh, duh
never heard it described as continuation passing

i should look back at my Prolog code from college. i think i did towers of hanoi in it at one point

@GodEmperorDune Based on my own experience, that's what that is usually called in functional programming
Generally, functional languages don't have the same async/coroutine system that makes callback based programming almost necessary in JS, but they also often have tail call optimization which makes that style more useful for general programming.

@murgatroid99 that's actually a really good idea b/c I have a fairly good handle on js stuff in general
although rn I have to work with sharepoint as a buisness requirement ;-;

7:23 PM
In case it wasn't clear, I don't think you should just look at JS, but I think it's a good starting point for looking at some functional programming concepts
personally, I would also recommend looking at one of the ML variants, which are Standard ML, OCaml, and F#
features like pattern matching and algebraic type systems help a lot with the pure functional programming style

I'll check it out, thanks!

When I learned functional programming in schools, they made us keep absolutely everything immutable
I think that was a good way to learn, because it forced us to use the functional style instead of falling back to imperative programming when it got complicated
We learned on Standard ML, specifically

That's a great idea- I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of functional programming tbh, haven't had a class on it or anything
I just graduated HS this year

congrats

The thing that confuses me usually has to do with mutability- I feel like the 'tree' approach is harder to work with
@GodEmperorDune thx

7:33 PM
@NickS what do you mean?

Q: Will sharing ps plus will still work on diffrent servers? (E.g. Us and singapore)

Raniel Tony PulgaI made a us account on my ps4 and I plan to buy ps plus asia so it will be cheaper. Then I made a singapore account. Can I ask if sharing ps plus will still work on different servers. And will I'm able to play online with the account that doesn't have ps plus? Tnx

@murgatroid99 having only worked in imperative systems before, I have a tendency to fall into a trap of fitting functional syntax into a imperative structure
for example, I am so used to approaching a problem in the way that I would if it was imperative that I incorrectly apply functional ideas

I think part of it is just learning what patterns are common to functional programming
You want to be thinking about using stuff like recursion, and continuation passing, and higher-order functions

@murgatroid99 what is a higher order function?

If you find yourself working with persistent mutable state, one common pattern is to pass the state as an argument, then create a new state and either pass it to the continuation function or return it as appropriate
@GodEmperorDune a function that operates on functions

If i remember correctly, higher-order-functions don't necessarily care what the innards of the passed function look like?

For example, map can be thought of as a function that takes as an argument a function that operates on an individual object, and returns a function that operates on a list of those objects

@murgatroid99 also, thanks for taking the time to respond to our questions lol
@murgatroid99 oh ok

@murgatroid99 ok this is a very helpful example
thanks

Wee! Had a call with a recruiter.
End result: it was for a company I had interviewed before, but turned down due to low pay.

ML type languages have "currying" as a top-level feature, so you can pass the first (few) arguments to a function and get a function that takes the rest of the arguments and returns the result

And this time was no exception. They offered ~75% of what I make now. And that's less than the offer I got last time.

I initially started thinking about functional programming b/c I made a page that got a list of objects, then let the user pick which to act on, then took that info and made a bunch of fetch() req to different, dynamic urls
@Frank sorry to hear that frank lol

@NickS as a side note, I'm glad to see that the fetch API is seeing use

@murgatroid99 it's actually a bit easier than the old way for me at least
i think i have a handle on promises
and b/c I don't have to worry about outdated browsers/etc in my use case, it makes it nice

7:50 PM
I work on a protocol/library that uses HTTP2, and for a while we pushed for fetch to be adopted so that we could use it on the browser, but it turns out that the official API doesn't return response trailers, which means that in the end we still can't quite use it.

Also, you're supposed to cut the bread lengthwise so you can get crispy edges.

@murgatroid99 gRPC?

@NickS yeah

nice

I've been tempted to put "made fetch happen" on my resume, but I wasn't really personally involved

7:52 PM
@murgatroid99 I'm glad it came along when it did because I just got this job and I don't think I would have gotten the hang of js api stuff so quickly had it not been there

@murgatroid99 Nice.

@Yuuki r/wellthatsucks ?

@NickS You're familiar with gRPC?

@murgatroid99 not very much unfortunately
I'm pretty new to the game so to speak
this is my first real job programming
honestly I'm not very fimiliar with RPCs in general

8:03 PM
Honestly I'm just so used to it being kind of unknown that I'm a little surprised when people have heard of it

I don't even remember where I learned about it

8:30 PM
i would watch the hell out of this

@GodEmperorDune Now that I think about it, the Tamarians must've had excellent memories.

@Yuuki as was pointed out to me on twitter, response image memes are basically the same thing
so me saying "y-u-do-dis.jpg" and you getting the refrance is what the tamarians are doing at a much bigger scale

@GodEmperorDune Isn't at a smaller scale since the Tamarians base their entire language on that?
Which should be a larger scale than just Twitter memes.

Yeah the tamarians are doing entirely memes as a language, which is at larger scale than meme for just a single idea or feeling
