So, what genre is Stranger Things, like, horror? I've heard good things about it, but I don't like horror

More sci-fi than anything. It's not heavy on jump scares if that's what puts you off

It's not really jump scares that I don't like. It's more the general feeling of uncomfortable fear that comes with the creepy horror genre

Like in games, being in an area where something has gone wrong or is going wrong right now and slowly moving around while unsettling music is playing and something might come around the corner at any time

@StrixVaria Yeah, horror games are not fun for me. Jump scares are the worst, and they're not even that clever. VR horror games would be pretty much the worst thing possible.

But IMO jump scares aren't inherently scary. They're surprising. This can translate into fear if the game has already primed you to be afraid.

@Jutschge well yeah, monsters are scarce in Amnesia/Penumbra series

but there's other ways to have jumpscares, like having barrels pop in front of you

But e.g. Doom is full of monsters popping out of nowhere and that's not scary, just surprising (for half a second while your minigun spins up)

I just feel like you always know the monster is there in amnesia. It doesn't just pop out of nowhere

@Jutschge yeah, the monsters usually aren't the ones that do the jump scares, but there are still jump scares

Whenever you turn around you aren't really "surprised" to see a monster.

What makes a horror game a horror game is the atmosphere, and SS2 excels at that; it very rarely surprises you but it's a game where an empty hallway or the chittering of a lab monkey or the distant sound of tearing metal can be absolutely terrifying.

@Jutschge that is not true. The monster is always somewhere around, but if he's behind you, you have to run away and hide

and that basically pauses the progression

SS2 doesn't really do "monster behind you", it does "monster lumbering towards you down the hallway begging you to run"

I don't like horror games (mostly because I hate pointless jump scares), but I loved Penumbra

it was such a great puzzle game with a scary atmosphere and a great story

there were no jump scares, but the sound and visual effects always kept your heart racing a little

In an unsurprising revelation, the attempt to make the timesheet software better has actually resulted in the timesheet software being worse.

Aaaaaaand, I broke it

Well, not broke, but made it think for a while.

At least it's giving responsive errors now. It used to be that you had to wait for an email to say that your timesheet couldn't be processed because a charge code doesn't exist. Now it tells you when you save, which is probably the most appropriate time to do it.

@MBraedley To be fair, breaking it in a way that makes it break earlier is one of the few acceptable ways to make code break

Only in Nova Scotia (and honestly, maybe a few other places) can you have a thunderstorm one evening (I lost power for a second last night from a lightning strike that couldn't have been more that half a km away) followed by flurries the next morning. (They're two different weather systems, though.)
