@Memor-X Yeah the shutting down studios issue is kinda sad. Defintiely not a fan of it but honestly I don't have any information as to why they do it. And listening to reddit detectives isn't really my favorite source so I try to not judge too hard.

I'm just really annoyed that before every major title coming out from EA/Ubisoft/Activision there's a mob of people trying to make some noise how a company is evil and how their games are shit because of some feature that isn't free (also free as in easy to obtain). The games are usually high quality in terms of graphics/controls and bugs and a lot of the games are great in general but get a ton of hate for having microtransactions.

I'm pretty sure people will bitch about characters taking too long to unlock now even though playing is the only option to unlock them.

Also in online games you need to constantly update the game to keep it refreshing. While it might be possible to fund that based on initial sales (not always), it's a lot easier to do with a steady flow of money. And that's either MTX or a subscritption (most use MTX though).

@Jutschge from what i have seen of videos (which may have been beta) there's stuff like greater aim assist. shorter cool downs and TotalBiscuit showed how with Boba Fett there was this AoE ability that damaged him but you could buy and upgrade the cards to make him immune to it's damage and shorten down the cooldown

like i said if grinding in offline can give you an unfair advantage then the unlocks are broken in the way that buying them is just as unfair

@Memor-X :ie: re DRM: ADEPT (the Adobe DRM used by most Kobo and Google Play books) requires a net connection to download the book but not to read it or move it on/off the e-reader thereafter, as long as you don't uninstall/reinstall the Adobe app.

Basically, when you first set it up it uses a net connection to set up your account, and then when you introduce it to your e-reader it does some kind of key exchange to uniquely identify that specific e-reader as belonging to you and gives it the decryption keys for books you buy.

ADEPT can also be removed entirely using Calibre, if you have the right plugins.

I don't know if Amazon DRM works similarly, though.

AIUI, the way it works is that when you set up your account, it generates the keys, and when you associate a device with that account, it installs them on the device

And then when you buy and download a DRM-encrusted book, you get a version encrypted such that only those keys can decrypt it.

It's not a unique key per book (which is why you only need to extract the keys once and then you can decrypt every book you buy, if you're using a de-DRM tool)

@MBraedley They're the real-money currency you use to buy lootboxes, I think.

Basically what EA's doing is disabling real-money transactions for a month until the uproar dies down and then they'll probably re-enable them right around the holidays.

If they limited real-money purchases to cosmetic items only, I don't think they'd be seeing as much back-lash, but from what I've seen, they've made lootbox progression pretty integral to the experience.

Which in and of itself is a shitty decision.

Yeah, they haven't changed anything about the lootboxes themselves as far as I know, they've just disabled real-money transactions temporarily.

@MBraedley There's always back-lash if there are MTX in a game with initial cost published by a big developer. Be it for cosmetics or power ups. I mean look at For Honor/Destiny/CoD.

A ton of people complained about skins only being purchasable with real money in LoL (which is free to play) and now we have lootboxes because of that.

@Jutschge But the level of back-lash, I think, would be lower if it was just cosmetic upgrades that could be bought with real money, while also being available in lootboxes.

I mean if we look at Overwatch, there's a consensus among the group of people I play with that Blizzard should sell in-game gold instead of/in addition to lootboxes.

@MBraedley not too sure about that tbh... people pretty much boycotted For Honor (which was a great game IMO) because of skins that could be bought (or even grinded but yeah that took a long time). Why? Well it's Ubisoft the big bad greedy company!

But I think microtransactions (no matter if paid game or f2p) don't hurt a game. It's more money for the devs which means more people working on said game.

I guess my perspective on Lootboxes is skewed because I watch Jim Sterling.

Who makes a constant big deal about how shitty they are, and makes a lot of good points while doing so.
