10:00 PM
@Unionhawk It gets easier to understand after a while.

@Unionhawk Most modern languages just don't have them.

@badp Do you mean to say that C isn't a modern language?

@murgatroid99 Do you have to be a level 4 void pointer wizard to understand?

@murgatroid99 No. I meant to say "most."

@Unionhawk I've taken 3 or 4 classes that heavily involved the details of C, and at that point it's kind of intuitive

10:03 PM
This is C++ even. I don't know what I did, but I fucked something up. I've not encountered such things until this day.

@Unionhawk pointers are fun!

Though I still hate PHP's void** arguments that are secretly supposed to be zval***

I'm writing code against the Python C API
I'm casting function pointers, which is something I thought wasn't even allowed :D

@Unionhawk Oh, that I probably can't help you with.

@Unionhawk what's the problem, I might be able to help

10:04 PM
I've never had more trouble getting code to compile than when using C++

@Unionhawk I like that you said "This is C++ even" as if that meant C++ was in any way easier, or clearer, or more linear.

@badp shh

I think part of the problem is every hour I seem to want to do nothing more than one thing. Right now, majoras mask. Nothing else. In an hour it'llbe bloodborne again. Oh woe is me. #firstworldproblems

In my very personal classification of most disliked programming languages people actually use, C++ is only slightly below PHP and Obj-C

@badp -1 nothing is worse than php

10:09 PM
@MattGiltaji At least PHP is uniformly awful.

@badp No it isn't. Different parts of PHP are awful in completely different and unpredictable ways

Ah. Dereferencing a null pointer will always lead to pain and stupidity. Got it.
And the punchline is that even after I got it to run it still didn't do what I want
Goddammit

@Unionhawk but do you understand why?

@Unionhawk watch out for dereferencing pointers that are uninitialized (especially in structs)

@murgatroid99 yes. And yet, the language isn't a conscious, concerted, planned attempt to build the moral equivalent of two-headed Janus.

10:11 PM
Actually, uninitialized data in structs in general

PHP just is.

@badp I don't know what that means

VERY SUBTLE REFERENCE TO OBJECTIVE-C

@badp oh, I thought you were trying to say something about C++. I've never used Objective C

@badp objective-c is steve jobs' revenge from beyond the grave
@murgatroid99 all the hassle of c without any of the good parts

What a nice number :D

@AshleyNunn (pulls out some upvotes)

@MattGiltaji Because &nullptr==wat... or whatever

user15026
(I took a screen shot because I wanted to share but I knew someone would do something to change it :P)

That said I'm not particularly being a fan of JEE + Spring either

10:16 PM
@Unionhawk that doesn't even look like it would compile

which is what we're using at work.

@AshleyNunn I'm at 13,010. Not quite as even but still nice.

user15026
@Yuuki Yes, now you just need +3 for a nice palindrome

@AshleyNunn that's not a palindrome....

I don't think you can take the address of a literal/constant/actually I'm not sure what that is. But that doesn't look like a null pointer dereference

10:17 PM
Spring brings Java programs all of the compile-time guarantees of Python with Java's signature code expressiveness and rich, expressive APIs of C

user15026
@MattGiltaji Damn it, I inverted things

user15026
It would STILL BE NICE

user15026
(I need to eat before I say anything else silly

Whatever, point is, nullptr doesn't actually point to anything, so dereferencing it doesn't make sense

@Unionhawk actually it does point to something

10:18 PM

it points to some random location in memory

@MattGiltaji
^ that is what it points to

when you try to access it, you get random data
segfault if you're lucky, gibberish if you're not

user15026
@Yuuki Oh, the portuguese bakery near my house makes something like this!

@MattGiltaji It's not even a guaranteed error?

10:19 PM
@AshleyNunn That's weird because it's apparently Polish.
Pączki (/ˈpɔːntʃki/, PAWNCH-ki, Polish: pączki [ˈpɔnt͡ʂki]) or paczki are pastries (singular: pączek) traditional to Polish cuisine. They are similar to doughnuts. == Description == Pączki are deep-fried pieces of dough shaped into flattened spheres and filled with confiture or other sweet filling. Pączki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing or bits of dried orange zest. A small amount of grain alcohol (traditionally, Spiritus) is added to the dough before cooking; as it evaporates, it prevents the absorption of oil deep into the dough. Although they look like German berliners, North...

user15026
@Yuuki yeah, it's not the exact thing, but it looks similar at least

At least in C, dereferencing NULL just about always results in a segfault unless you're writing kernel code or your OS is dumb

@murgatroid99 as long as the null address is outside your allocated memory space, it will bomb

I hate this project and everything it stands for right now

@MattGiltaji Right, but in C, NULL==0, so it's a guarantee

10:21 PM
@murgatroid99 yes

user15026
Songza has a Disney Sing Along playlist. Guess what is accompanying my dinner making?

I never found pointers that difficult. It probably has to do with the fact we learned about them in our Comp Sci 101 class instead of second or third year like a lot of other students seemed to.

sometimes people assume that uninitialized == null which is not always the case

@AshleyNunn Me singing Disney songs?

user15026
@Yuuki oooh, we could do all the good duets! How do you feel about steak and potato pancakes for dinner?

10:22 PM
@AshleyNunn immortals

The first school I attended was all C++ and Assembly, and we went into pointers really early.

user15026
@MattGiltaji That reminds me, I need to acquire that song

@AshleyNunn That sounds good.

user15026
@Yuuki Perfect! Come on over! Door is unlocked!

@Wipqozn yeah, i learned pointers in my first compsci class too

10:23 PM
When I swapped to a different school so I could major in CS instead of minor, I ended up learning them again. I was really surprised, since I figured it was covered in 101 everywhere... then I realized that my class was outside the norm, since we learned in C++. Seems a lot of schools usually start students in JAva.
In fact I remember my class at the new school having a lot more difficulty with them then the students at my other school where we learned about them in CS 101

@Wipqozn It's kinda half-and-half, I've found.

The worst part about pointers is that debugging them is just a huge pain in the ass.

I can't get this thing to sort the way I want... but I can get it to sort backwards, so....
If I just print it backwards...

@GnomeSlice you must whip it!

10:26 PM
WHIP IT GOOD
LICORICE WHIP

@MattGiltaji No, that's Mickey Rourke.

@Yuuki urmom is Mickey Rourke

So, I can only get this to sort in descending order for some reason, so literally I'm fixing that by printing it backwards.

@MattGiltaji I'm not sure how much of a trust fund this would give me.
@Unionhawk Eh, if it works, it works, I guess.

@Unionhawk what's going on in your sort function?

10:29 PM
@MattGiltaji I DON'T KNOW

@Unionhawk is it a builtin or did you roll your own?

It's my own abomination.
a la bubble sort

@Unionhawk just reverse the comparison

If it's the complete opposite, I guess it's something with the comparison?

10:31 PM
DAMN IT BRIDGE, I NEED TO DECIDE WAHT TO DO

Aaaaand inb4'd.

@murgatroid99 I did, and it didn't even sort.
I don't understand what it's doing

I've basically spent the whole night in here since I can't decide what I want to do. This is terrible. I hate when this happens. I blame @GnomeSlice.

My code is on drugs I guess

@Unionhawk bogosort(unis_homework)

@Unionhawk make sure you invert the entirety of whatever condition does the comparison

Progressive death metal with clear vocals. cc @AshleyNunn @KevinvanderVelden @yuuki @RPiAwesomeness @StrixVaria @anyone else I forgot.

@Arperum @me

I'm leaning towards reading right now... or majoras mask...

10:32 PM
@MattGiltaji I'll try to remember. try.

@Wipqozn you should try to make the blame @GnomeSlice meme stick
@Arperum :D

@Unionhawk Though it should just be something like if (a[i] < a[i+1])swap(a,i,i+1) and you should just be able to switch < for >
Actually, that's like the entire bubble sort algorithm

> I took the shell off my racing snail. I thought it would make him go faster.
> If anything, it made him more sluggish.

for (i=0; i<a.length-1; i++){
  for (j=i; j < a.length-1; j++){
    if (a[j] > a[j+1]) swap(a, j, j+1);
  }
}

@Yuuki terrible

10:36 PM
There, bubble sort

Well, I can't decide what to do, so I'm just going to go read instead of wasting the remaining hours fo my night.

user15026
@Wipqozn Reading is good :)

Oh, wait, that bubble sort I wrote is wrong.

Q: Minecraft: How To Teleport Players When They Enter A Certain Area/Coordinates

JakeI am try to teleport a player to certain coordinates once they enter an area. The idea is that they enter a really small building, but once they turn a corner, they get teleported into a larger building. Please refer to the adventure map named, 5 Cubed, if you need help understanding what I am...

10:53 PM
@Unionhawk @TimStone Hasley fucked up

:o

What else is new

She ordered a strike on a refuge camp

as you're all talking coding, care to fix my perl? :<

@OrigamiRobot Nice

10:55 PM
26% approval rating

But don't worry, it was a refugee camp with WMDs some dude they're looking for inside
I guess it's more accurately a commentary on drone strikes than the whole "Iraq has WMDs" thing
Maybe that was the weakness in the fed exposed to the Crimson state, that the president has demonstrated a willingness to shoot first and ask questions later.

@OrigamiRobot who is hasley?

Elite Dangerous

@OrigamiRobot oh, i was searching google news >.>

Hahahahahahahaha

11:02 PM
@djsmiley2k yes, here's what you need to do

Awesome

change the first line to #!/usr/bin/python

...
:D

now fix all of the other mistakes

@badp so much win

11:03 PM
actually according ot the irssi ops it's a fault with hte signal

@badp I think you mean #!/usr/bin/env python

or my handling of such, gah

@murgatroid99 or is it /bin/env python?

@murgatroid99 cmon, not using venv wrapper?

@badp I would assume that the whole point of the env binary is to be able to put the same line in a #! for any system

11:04 PM
@murgatroid99 cygwin and SuSE 12 put env in different paths.

@badp that's dumb

also the Python interpreter.
I can't remember which is which, however.

That's basically saying "we don't want anyone to run scripts on our system"

eh. I'll just symlink my dev machine's cygwin path to match the actual server's
I'm happy I can run cygwin at all.
For as little as you can actually do to stop somebody who has the most basic access to a computer from running cygwin on Windows. I think mounting noexec is Linux only, right?

11:19 PM

user15026
@fredley I am probably missing something here.

Ted Cruz is a crazy-person (also a Republican/Tea Party congressman) running for President and he made the fatal mistake of not registering that domain name in advance of his running.

The website says the opposite of his campaign platform

user15026
Ah. :)

@AshleyNunn tedcruz.org
I wouldn't suggest going there, though.

11:25 PM
@TimStone why does it seem that republicans fail at technology?

@MattGiltaji because it's new

user15026
@MBraedley That makes me want to stab stuff.

user15026
He sounds like a crazy.

Also, for a period of time, his site shared a certificate with nigerian-prince.com read the story here

@AshleyNunn his platform is crazy
but i think he is running to earn higher speaking fees in the future

6 hours ago, by Tim Stone
.@BorowitzReport: Disturbed Man Tries to Get Into White House http://nyr.kr/19KOS3w (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty) http://t.co/j4ngE9hJMN

maybe a talk show on fox

You want to here something even crazier? He has (had?) dual Canadian and American citizenship. He was born in Canada. Calgary IIRC.

@MBraedley oh no, he could control 2/3rds of north america at once!

Yeah. I think he went through with formally renouncing his Canadian citizenship a few months ago though.
'Cause MURICA

@MattGiltaji Technically no. You need to be a permanent resident of Canada in order to be elected to parliament, and I think it's similar in the US.

11:30 PM
@TimStone probably because having a Republican run as a citizen of another country wouldn't sit well with voters after the last couple of elections

Pretty much that, yeah.

@murgatroid99 they would just paint it as "liberal lies"

@MattGiltaji People already know he's Canadian

@murgatroid99 people who pay attention
which is not the same subset of the population that votes

I hope that Trump actually tries to run too just so we can double-down on that shitshow.
His ego will be his vice presidential candidate.

11:32 PM
While we're on the topic, TIL that you don't actually need to be born in the US to be president, you just need to be an American Citizen at (or possibly because of) birth.

@MBraedley you can also be kenyan
just fyi

@MBraedley you have to be a natural-born citizen

@MattGiltaji None of that BS. I was actually being serious.

That is, born in America or to American parent(s)

@MBraedley yeah, john mccain was born in panama

11:34 PM
@murgatroid99 Yes, which is sufficiently vague as to require a clarification.

@MBraedley I just gave it

@MBraedley We like to encourage late-pregnancy vacations for some reason.

@MattGiltaji Well I know that now, but his circumstances were a little different, as it was in the canal zone, which was technically the US.

@MBraedley I didn't know that either

Fooooooooood
I need to go grocery shopping soon
My pantry consists of ramen and mac and cheese. And pasta. (limited sauce)

11:37 PM
@Unionhawk That's more than enough to live off of.

It is true, but I'd like some variety
Ideally

My entire dinner food collection is frozen individual chicken pot pies

@Unionhawk buy different bbq sauces and other condiments and eat with your macaroni stuffs

boiled noodles and then stir fried with a bit of soy sauce is pretty good

11:39 PM
Today's dinner is apparently marinara infused chicken ramen. Because apparently this pot wasn't 100% clean I guess.

Patch one finally added to my vest.

Whatever close enough

@murgatroid99 While those are tasty, I find they get repetitive faster than some other foods.

@MBraedley It works well for me because I only eat dinner at home 3 days a week
Otherwise, I eat at work

@murgatroid99 how are the google dinners?

user15026
11:42 PM
I have steak with balsamic reduction mushroom sauce, and potato pancakes, and mixed veggies

user15026
:D

@MattGiltaji good. Less of what I'd choose to eat on my own, but very well done

user15026
@MattGiltaji The lunches I have had at the office here are pretty nice

user15026
(A friend invites me sometimes when we both have matching schedules. Like this week, mostly likely, because I dont have a dang job :P)

@MattGiltaji Like, my building often has Chinese food, or Korean food, or Mexican food, etc. but not as much of the kind of food I'd want to eat, like American or Italian food.

11:44 PM
@murgatroid99 sounds delicious

does anybody here play Brawlhalla

@Blem oh iphone 6plus

@GnomeSlice You do

@MattGiltaji yeah. I just often wish they had pasta or something.

11:46 PM
I've seen you

@OrigamiRobot Anybody else.

@murgatroid99 can you go to other buildings or is it campus-wide?

@MattGiltaji My building isn't really close to the other buildings
Basically, I'm here
The nearest food is like 3 blocks south, and the nearest shuttle stop to that building is my building

@murgatroid99 :S

So, I could, but I don't want to bother

11:49 PM
What exactly is American food?

@PrivatePansy Hamburger is always the first thing I think of

I guess that is quintessentially American, though historically that's not really the case

@PrivatePansy Yeah, I'm thinking more of stuff that was primarily popularized in America than stuff that comes from America

@PrivatePansy soul food

@MattGiltaji Ah, that's more of what I was thinking of
Huh. The calc property is used by Stack Exchange

11:54 PM
The cuisine of the United States reflects its history. The European colonization of the Americas yielded the introduction of a number of ingredients and cooking styles to the latter. The various styles continued expanding well into the 19th and 20th centuries, proportional to the influx of immigrants from many foreign nations; such influx developed a rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country. Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the basis of American Cuisine. When...

guess I'm not reading comics tonight. I need to be at work in less than 10 hours. Unless my boss is expecting me to be late and only told me 7 so I wouldn't be late for the real time.
