Q: How do I protect my home from the corruptio

PinkleI used to play terraria at Steam and the corruption ruined my home. Now I am on PS4 and want to defeat the Wall of Flesh. I have read various ways to protect my house from the corruption but am not sure what works and what doesn't? Has anyone had success with this?

its a site for questions and answers. yes we are more "structured" than places like yahoo answers or reddit, but that doesn't mean we should be exclusive to only certain question subjects

@OrigamiRobot no ssshhh

@Rapitor but the questions need to have a valid answer that is not "opinion based"... how do you have factual material about stuff that does not exist?

@Rapitor I disagree. Keeping the quality of a site high is going to keep its image better than places like yahoo answers, which is a good thing. Garbage should be sifted and tossed away to promote quality.

I think @Sterno should be present for this discussion

7:01 PM
@murgatroid99 I'm sure there are people who think the religious SE sites are pretty much the same.
But those are allowed.

@GnomeSlice At least they have a structure and canon to work from

@StrixVaria This is my problem with Lifehacks.

True, but I don't think that's really a fair way to make a distinction.

@MattGiltaji many many questions on all of the network have opinion-like answers.

Paranormal's scope is basically "made up things that people pretend are real things but don't really fit into other categories of made up things"

7:02 PM
Opinion is not the opposite of fact.

@murgatroid99 You missed the part where it's only things he believes are real.
his response to the vampire questions being out of a scope is "but those aren't real"

Things aren't either "fact-based" or "opinion-based". They can be both or neither, or one or the other.
They are different spectra.

@Wipqozn Technically, it's things listed on the Wikipedia article for "Paranormal" and related articles

All good SE sites must be fact-based. Whether that's based on actual science, actual rules of programming languages, or the canon of some religion.

@murgatroid99 so scope changes as soon as someone edits the wikipedia page?

7:04 PM
@OrigamiRobot Can't be bothered for drama today, got way more than my required dose. pratchett dead, and my godfather who is probably not going to be alive anymore on my birthday (next week)...

:20511909 You're a cool guy.

:20511909 based on rules of a programming language.

@Wipqozn nuh uh

:20511909 the code needs to compile

it's all just puzzles people have made

7:04 PM
I did get him to whittle it down to this
@murgatroid99 What about: 'claimed occurrence of an event or perception beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding'? — kenorb 1 hour ago
Which is still pretty vague

@GnomeSlice that's puzzling se

what about lifehacks

ALthough I have no clue about what "rules" lifehacks is based on, aside of "not your rules".

@MattGiltaji puzzling.se is pretty stupid

@murgatroid99 no disagreement here

7:06 PM
I just wish people would stop saying that as soon as something isn't 100% based in fact that it's "opinion-based".
Paranormal isn't opinion-based, it's just not fact-based.

@StrixVaria it's not-fact based

@murgatroid99 Also that.

@StrixVaria There are certainly facts around paranormal and cryptozoology. Things like reports and studies. The problem is I don't see what good a Q&A site would do with those kind of facts.

once you have a fact the "para" is pretty much gone.

@murgatroid99 puzzling is a great example. its not fact based, just riddles and other various riddles. and it works fine. It has a scope, set topics, and is well on their way to graduation

Don't have time to answer now, but rest assured it's not going to be any time soon. We still have many, many problems to solve. — Doorknob ♦ Mar 9 at 18:50
don't put too much weight on the Area 51 stats.
They mostly exist just to gauge how large the community for a topic is, and if the topic is broad and deep enough to even work.

You could make a fact-based site about Paranormal things, but it'd just be Skeptics with a smaller scope.

@Wipqozn so necessary but not sufficient?

@OrigamiRobot that's my only concern with paranormal. I thought skeptics kind of had that area.

@MattGiltaji More or less.
@Rapitor Skeptics probably doesn't consider any of his paranormal sources to be credible.
It's like when proposals get made that's identical to an existing site, but with lower standards.

@Wipqozn But that doesn't mean one couldn't ask about paranormal things.
In theory, of course.

7:14 PM
@OrigamiRobot NEver meant to imply otherwise

I don't know how Skeptics has defined their scope.

Q: Are alien visitors in Area 51?

7:20 PM
Regarding taking Paranormal.SE seriously, I don't think it can be done. The definition of on-topic is going to literally be "things for which there is no proof". How are you going to vet answers?

@JasonBerkan clearly the proposer will do it all manually

@JasonBerkan I didn't say you had to take it seriously

I don't think anyone was asking people to take that proposal seriously, just not to disrupt it if you don't like it.

^

@OrigamiRobot i think everyone who put questions on the proposal does like it, whether it will be a successful se site is a different thing.

7:24 PM
@MattGiltaji I can say with certainty that that is not accurate.

@OrigamiRobot Do you mean to imply that I'm not really trying to frame a ghost for murder?

@OrigamiRobot if you can say it with certainty, it is no longer in scope
@Sterno they left you off the list of lifehacks mods... you might want to look into that

7:42 PM
@Batophobia Sounds like they're trying to solve the wrong problem.
If you want people to use it, put information there useful and relevant for the employees.

@Frank Logic doesn't work on my boss(es) so I just find ways around their stupidity

I'm currently losing 1,600 euros a week @StrixVaria @MBraedley

@Wipqozn Is that the official currency in the game?

@MBraedley I'm not even sure
Looks kind of sort of like a euro sign
think it's meant to be generic

7:45 PM
@Batophobia If they're not IT, you disregard their reasoning and either punt it out the window, or work around it.

Also, not good. I've only dipped into the red early in the game. Which isn't to say I haven't had cash flow issues, but I'm always making money.

@Frank They are IT, but still incompetent so I'll work past whatever they want to do

@Wipqozn If there's one thing we've learned, is that SE really wants this site to succeed, policies be damned.

Oh, and he's 14.

I really wonder what's the motivation behind their insistence on making this site succeed.

@Frank It probably brings in a lot of traffic
Because lifehacks are silly

@SaintWacko Yeah, that would explain it.

@SaintWacko If they're willing to compromise their standards to bring in traffic, that's going to send a rather bad message to the rest of the network.

7:51 PM
@Sterno Votes on the nomination posts don't really matter

@Yuuki My tinfoil hat theory is that the new VC funding wants to see something like this work.

@Frank I agree, but you see it happen in a lot of places. The equivalent is kinda happening with the church I go to :(

@MadScientist No, they pick whoever (though it did happen to be the top 3 still who accepted). But it's pretty telling

I kinda want to bring this up on Meta.SE. I just want to know why they're so insistent on it succeeding. Talk is cheap. Let's see the post with references to back it up...

@Yuuki You'll just get Shog and Robert going, "What are you talking about? There's no contradiction or inconsistency here."

7:54 PM
@Frank Surely there are specific examples he could point to

So, I built this new city in Skylines... This city is like no other, eggsactly as one would eggspect from such an eggsceptional mayor. The people are eggscentric, buildings eggstravagant and public transport is eggscelent, and I am not eggsagerating! The entrance to city is a bit congested, but the eggsit is just fine, which can be eggsplained only by everyone loving the city so much, they want to eggstend their visit.

@fredley @StrixVaria Does your modship feel worthless now that you know any old sucker can get one?

@Chippies This is great

@Wipqozn this is what happens when I turn unlimited money and all unlocks on to "learn how to run a city better"
it did not go as planned
as one would eggspect anyway

@Chippies it looks awesome tho

7:57 PM
@TheAce it actually functions fairly well too, which is the weirdest part

@Chippies that single skyscraper.

i gotta restart mine i think i jacked up my roads

@Yuuki I'd bet that they're internally divided about the site. The fact that they took 90 days to appoint mods is a bit suspicious. But the decision about the viability of the site will likely be made later, they usually shut them down in the private beta or then only much later

@Rapitor it's one of the "unique buildings"

@Chippies Well, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs

7:59 PM
ugh
I really wish my citizens would stop burning down buildings
They should realize by now the fire department in their city sucks, so stop starting fires! jeez

> slow

@Yuuki From its current rate of approximately 0

Why does legislation always need to be ridiculously long winded

@Batophobia edge cases

Hyrule Warriors got its last dlc today, the season pass adds quite a lot of value to the game

8:05 PM
@Batophobia 313 pages of "shut the hell up Telecom"

@Batophobia Because everyone looks for loopholes.
A 3-page document is full of holes.

@Yuuki Having more sounds like making more loopholes

nah. it's extremely specific

@Chippies Which DLC is that?

@Batophobia Oh? Then give me a three sentence bill for net neutrality.

8:07 PM
@Batophobia That's not really how it works. Saying "no, you can't do this; no, you can't do that either" doesn't open any loopholes

Less wording = less loopholes, right?

@Batophobia Boss Rush, I think it's called. Adds 2 new challenge modes, I haven't played it yet though

@Yuuki "Throttling any resource is illegal"

@Batophobia Define throttling.

@Batophobia Define resource

8:07 PM
@Yuuki less words = less specific = open to interpretation = plenty of loopholes

@Batophobia Illegal how? What's my penalty?
If it's just you saying it's illegal, I'll do it anyways.

@Yuuki Minimum $10trillion fine
@murgatroid99 Literally anything

@Batophobia Eighth Amendment, cruel and unusual punishment.
Unconstitutional.

EVERYTHINGS FALLING APART

@Yuuki Not cruel nor unusual

8:09 PM
GARBAGE IS PILING UP EVERYWHERE

@Batophobia fine fine fine fine fine fine fine fine fine etc...

HOUSES ARE BURNING DOWN
THIS IS TERRIBLE

@Batophobia therefore, it is literally cheaper to litigate for the rest of your life than pay the fine

ALSO I'M BROKE
I HAVE NEGATIVE 1100 MONIES

Yeah, other point. I'll just fight you for eternity in court to avoid paying the fine.

8:09 PM
@Wipqozn that's when I almost went bankrupt with my city yesterday

@Wipqozn SEND IN THE TIGREX

garbage is the worst

@Batophobia The FCC doesn't have jurisdiction over literally everything

CRIME EVERYWHERE

@murgatroid99 Then everything the FCC has jurisdiction over

8:10 PM
Garbage triggers a chain reaction of everything going to shit. Literally in some cases

I'm thinking it's time to start over

Also, you still haven't defined throttling.

For next time: better garbage and roads I suspect

@Batophobia What does it mean to say "you can't throttle radio frequencies"?

8:11 PM
@Yuuki causing any effect that was not intended by the original source owner

I did manage to recover quite easily, by adjusting budget for things

I'm going tot ake out anothger loan

I didn't take the bailout btw

@Batophobia But I am the source owner. I own the lines, customers just rent it.

loads of people want to move into my city
I don't know why

8:12 PM
@Batophobia Define "effect" and "source"

@Yuuki Nope, source would be the website owner or content creator

Literally half of any bill involves defining stuff.

@Batophobia Also, does this mean that cable companies are obligated to provide infinite bandwidth and zero latency because that's the intention of the site owner?

@murgatroid99 Effect, as in what happens in the latter part of the "Cause and Effect" idea

@Batophobia That's not a definition

8:13 PM
@Batophobia So I can just do whatever until the website owner or content owner decides to sue me for infringing on their intent.

I'M A BIG TOWN NOW

@murgatroid99 Sure it is. You do an action, that creates some effect

but I think I'm fucked

@Batophobia Physics isn't divided into causes and effects, so you must be talking about some other system. I'm not sure what, though

@Yuuki Or your users speak up and the source owner agrees

8:14 PM
@Wipqozn Reminds me of the old commercials for Pull-Ups
"I'm a big kid now!"

@Batophobia But until then, I can do whatever?

@Batophobia So now cable companies are required to follow the arbitrary whims of website owners and users?

@Yuuki That's how it is anywhere
until someone catches you, nothing it illegal

@Batophobia but the burden of enforcement is on the potential victims? That doesn't really seem fair

8:16 PM
hmmm
I wonder if I can get rid of my garbage problem by just bulldozing peoples homes

@murgatroid99 Not necessarily, the content owner can also initiate it
besides, that is still how it usually is

I still don't have a high school

@Batophobia That's completely wrong. It's still illegal, you just aren't being fined/jailed/whatever for it.

@Batophobia So who is responsible for enforcement, then?

and I'm still losing money
and pepole still want to move into my city

8:17 PM
@Wipqozn tax them

@murgatroid99 Judicial system, what else?

@Batophobia That's not the case literally everywhere.

@Batophobia The executive branch is responsible for enforcing laws in America

@Wipqozn lower your energy and water budgets to just enough
that stuff saves you A LOT of money

@murgatroid99 What I meant, I'm distracted by other things

8:19 PM
@Chippies I actually need tyo raise my budget for both
I micromanage my budgets a lot

@Wipqozn increase taxes a bit
it does sound like you're fucked though

I think my problem is traffic

Play on 3x speed like a robot!

What if I don't throttle? I'm just gonna tell all my buddies to stay out of this area here. Now that I'm the only provider, I can jack up prices as high as I want.

when I almost went bankrupt, my saving grace was not micromanaging budget much before

8:20 PM
@Batophobia At this point, I think I've lost track of all of the other problems with your proposal

@Yuuki no need to throttle when you're "renting" couple of mbps anyway

@Yuuki Problems of capitalism, not sure why you tack it on to this issue

@Batophobia The entire point of regulation is to handle the "problems of capitalism"
That is the issue

@Batophobia Because that's exactly what's happening in the US right now.
And what the FCC is trying address with these regulations.
The regulations aren't just about throttling.

I;'M MAKING MONEY AGAIN
raising taxes was a good idea

8:22 PM
@Yuuki I was talking about your original proposal
15 mins ago, by Yuuki
@Batophobia Oh? Then give me a three sentence bill for net neutrality.

2 mins ago, by Chippies
@Yuuki no need to throttle when you're "renting" couple of mbps anyway

In any case, you've probably noticed you've gone way past three sentences with the amount of justifications and definitions you've had to provide.

if no one is competing, you don't even have to bother throttling, because if people want internet connection, they will pay whatever you ask for that 1 mbps or whatever it is you decide is enough

@Batophobia The fact that ISPs have those monopolies prevents users from getting data for a consistent price

8:24 PM
@murgatroid99 This bill, after it survives all the legal challenges the ISPs can think of to throw it's way, will help ensure competition.

my mother in Latvia pays 40$ for cable TV and 250/250 internet bundle

Which, in my mind, is an extremely good thing.

@Frank yes, that was kind of my point
That, and the fact that doing so is in fact relevant to net neutrality

@Yuuki Definitions are hardly something that need to be in a bill. If you are in congress and don't know how to use a dictionary you should probably be ejected to the moon

Competition is absolutely shitty for monopolies.
It is, however, absolutely wonderful for consumers.

8:25 PM
@Batophobia If every word had exactly one precise definition, that argument would actually make sense

@Batophobia Oh, no, they definitely are needed.

@Batophobia dictionaries change though

Because you know people will twist that definition to match their own interpretations.

@Frank Unfortunately I'm not certain if it will survive the onslaught of whiny ISPs and such

See: NSA's secret interpretation of a bill.

8:26 PM
13 mins ago, by Yuuki
Literally half of any bill involves defining stuff.

should ISPs lobby to dictionary manufacturers now?

@murgatroid99 Defining every word in a bill is ridiculous and pretty much never ending

@Rapitor I think it has a very good chance of surviving.

"define the"

@Batophobia Obviously they don't define every word. Stop fighting a straw man
But they can't just say "don't throttle anything" because that would just end up as a rule against choking people

8:27 PM
@Batophobia So, I'll go buy a dictionary manufacturer and tell Congress to use the dictionary I wrote, where "net neutrality" is defined as "do what the cable companies tell you to do and give them all your money".

@murgatroid99 I see nothing wrong with that

@SaintWacko Well, you can't use such a rule to enforce ISP regulations, which is literally the entire point of this conversation

@murgatroid99 Well ISPs really shouldn't be choking anyone either

@murgatroid99 Or they'll define it as something else, and then say they're following the rules.

(I haven't actually been paying attention to the conversation)

8:29 PM
@SaintWacko there are probably other bills addressing that though

I would like to say for the record that I am against choking people.
Now what are we talking about?

@Frank In fact, ISPs have already been seen doing exactly that

@OrigamiRobot Welcome to the club

@OrigamiRobot As a robot, you are probably programmed to say that anyway

All those extra words are there to explain the reasoning, and what the purpose of it is, so those affected by it can't try to wiggle out of it by deliberately misunderstanding it.
@murgatroid99 Exactly.

8:31 PM
The bills have to be as specific as possible, so there's no "misunderstandings"

Like how "unlimited data" sometimes means "your bandwidth will become epsilon if you use too much" or even "we will try to get rid of you if you use too much"

@murgatroid99 Or, "Yeah, you can download whatever you want, but we're going to make it as painful as possible to use."

For a while, Comcast apparently had a policy of harassing the top 5% bandwidth users on unlimited data plans until they switched service providers

TIL Japan's low homicide rate is due to the police marking every unsolved death as "suicide".

@Yuuki yay for misincentivized metrics

> Photos of the teenager's corpse show a deep cut on his right arm, horrific bruising on his neck and chest. His face is swollen and covered with cuts. A silhouette of violence runs from the corner of his left eye over the cheekbone to his jaw, and his legs are pocked with small burns the size of a lighted cigarette.
> The cause of death was "heart disease," police declared.

@Yuuki if they avoid solving/investigating murders, they probably have more murders than other countries because the murderers are still free

@Yuuki damn

8:38 PM
> Only 6.3% of the unnatural deaths in Aichi are investigated by a medical examiner, a minuscule rate even by nationwide standards in Japan, where an autopsy is performed in 11.2% of cases.

@murgatroid99 That top 5% of users were where they made the least money on, so they wanted fatter whales to make more profit.

@Frank Yeah, that's definitely why. And, they could technically call it unlimited data, and it technically wasn't throttling

@GnomeSlice glory to arstotzka

Except they couldn't just say, "Hey, we don't want you as a customer anymore. Go find somewhere else." because they made a promise to service that region to the government.

@GnomeSlice Just yesterday I tweeted to Milan's transit system about unattended luggage
(I deleted the tweet afterwards because paranoia)

@badp ?

@GnomeSlice I like how the first example picture is an iPhone with what looks like Google Play Music

@murgatroid99 Yeah, I noticed that too.
Apple must not allow them to show iOS?

8:47 PM
@GnomeSlice what if that bag actually did contain explosives and my tweet actually did ruin a terrorist attack!?!?

no, that can't be right
@badp Oh, you're right.
Well, I'm sure you'll be the first to know

I don't know if being reached by a bullet from the back counts as knowing!!???!??!?!?

@badp needs moar punctuation

You should make a sockpuppet for tweeting about terror threats and suspicious packages.

@MattGiltaji the ever increasing amount of punctuation is my barely-verbal rational acknowledge of the supersonic amount of paranoia on display
(and yet if I didn't find that baggage suspicious I wouldn't have tweeted about it)

Good stuff.

UGH MY NEW JOB IS SO BORING

@GnomeSlice But it pays the bills.

8:54 PM
@badp It has existed for quite a while.

That shows a level of responsibility and maturity that even some thirty year olds have trouble with.

@GnomeSlice can it be more boring than a security guard? I was assuming that really meant standing in one place for 8 hours while looking mildly menacing.

@badp Yeah, idk, I'm not actually doing that any more
I've found other work and it was going to be too far away
Also the music in Zombies. Corporate Lifestyle Simulator is better than the actual game.

@GnomeSlice what is your job?

It was fun for like 10 minutes.

8:56 PM
@GnomeSlice I'm relieved, that sounds like a source of brain damage.

@MattGiltaji I work in a bakery at a grocery store.

@GnomeSlice yep, it's on google play all access.
There isn't a lot of VG music in there, but that much is.

@GnomeSlice ugh, retail and food service jobs suck

I don't listen to a lot of VG music, but yesterday I downloaded all of the music from Commander Keen GBC and got it all prettied up for my library.
So good.
I need to get my GBC out, or find an emulator and play that again.
Also looking at my schedule looks like the cute girl I met last time I was at bakery is starting when I finish tomorrow, maybe I can chat her up some more and get her number
Makes work not seem so bad I guess
