@Frank What I mean is, "social justice warrior" is in my experience usually used as a word for people who pervert social justice movements to get attention for themselves and censor ideas they don't like. Though you're probably right that it's primarily used in this context as ad hominem.
@murgatroid99 It makes it easy to strawman a position, without actually digging deeper into the actual issues. Just, "social justice warrior = bad, therefore your opinion isn't worth actually discussing"

@Frank Right, but you could use basically any pejorative to do that. My point was that the Polygon article specifically calls out that "GamerGaters" oppose "social justice warriors", and that this implies something about their character, when it's really just the name they use for people they want to discredit.
@SevenSidedDie That's been my stance from day one. And, really, that's what this entire discussion is going to boil down to. Either we allow any and all lore questions, or we outright ban them all. @murgatroid99 By labelling all those that oppose you as social justice warriors, it stops you from having to acknowledge the alternate points, and just lump them all together.

Which means critical thought doesn't need to happen, as having such a huge entity to attack allows them to go, "We're the persecuted minority! This is our enemy!"

@StrixVaria Anyway, he left because he simply didn't like the direction the site was moving. It turned into an ordeal because a bug revealed all his voting when he deleted.
I don't understand people who delete their accounts because they don't like the direction the site is moving. You can even more easily simply stop participating, with the option of returning in the future if the site has learned from the error of its ways and reverted back to a place that you like.

@Rapitor That was not the point of the goose though. And it may have been modded in for Halo CE PC, but it isn't there normally. Also, the voice is the same, the recording filters are not
If you're going to do an HD update of those, you have to not touch anything. They are too ingrained in fans' minds. You can't mess with maps, you can't tweak settings, and you can't make it more modern. You have to remake it, and live with the warts

I think our policy on lore (should we not ban it) should be something like this: Questions and answers should make their best effort to only speak about canon from video games specifically. If a question asks a thing that's not explained by the video game's canon, then the answer is "It's not explained in the video game canon."
@Unionhawk Yeah, I like how they make a nod to that when you get the first Oz Kit, mentioning it's nice to have even if you're not in on that whole breathing thing.
@StrixVaria Our policy on lore is incredibly broad. Entire canon means everything. Not just in-game lore, but everything in the universe. Books, movies, you name it. If it's part of the universe, we apparently accept it.
@Ktash Answers from video games are acceptable; anything that requires additional lore knowledge is not required for a good answer and I would even say you shouldn't include it even if you know it.
@StrixVaria Lore is still part of the game. for example, in Halo Reach you meet with certain characters you wouldnt really know who they are or where they stand without reading the books. so the question "who was in the cryochamber at the end" couldn't really be answered without reading the book or guessing (example)
@Frank I would very much disagree. That's like saying star wars is only the movies. It isn't. And a star wars expert should know more than just the movie lore
@Sterno A better wording of what he's trying to say is, "This website is made specifically for people who play games, where playing games is the core expertise. Tangentially related expertises are coincidental only, and we should focus on our core expertise."

@Rapitor @Batophobia Would you be happier with a rule along the lines of "Questions that aren't directly related to the in-game lore should be disallowed." So for example, if you asked about that Halo guy @Rapitor is concerned about it's fine, but if you ask about something that's novel-only then that's off topic.
@StrixVaria We worry too much about edge cases in my opinion. We should never be applying rules blindly. They should be seen more as guidelines, than anything else. We're all intelligent people capable of understanding situations which are a special case and therefore ane xception to the rule. We don't need to detail each and every case, but instead deal with them on a case by case basis.
If all we are is experts at playing video games, then we are less helpful than most gaming sites out there. That would mean that we are are only a targeted version of gamefaqs (which would be a more apt name). That is not our expertise. Our expertise is video games. And video games include plot. And video games sometimes take place in expansive universes. And that knowledge helps and improves video games. So yes, that is exactly our expertise! And if it isn't, then there is no point to us
I think that knowledge that someone would acquire normally through gaming, even if it's not directly gaming-related, should also be on topic. For example, setting up firewalls.
We have not had a problem with lore questions yet. I have not seen a flood of terrible questions asking about completely unrelated and tangential things. I feel like this is a solution in search of a problem

I learned how to do port forwarding when trying to play Killing Floor with my friends, and being able to do port forwarding was essential to being able to play online with my friends.
