@murgatroid99 By using it as a pejorative they're using an ad hominem to give them something to attack.
"Oh, you're a social justice warrior, so that means you're a crackpot not worth listening to."

I have no understanding of anything involved in "Gamer Gate", I just like to play games

This room was placed in timeout for 30 seconds; the topic of this room is "General Arqade chat room, wherein you are barred from feeding (or thinking about) the invisible turtle." - conversation should be limited to that topic.
This is a reminder that certain topics of discussion are strictly forbidden

@Frank I think he's saying its flipped the other way. If they deem someone on the issue a crackpot not worth listening to, then they call them a Social Justice Warrior

oh ok.

@fredley Wait, what?
I specifically asked if it was allowed yet.

5:01 PM
guess it's still banned lol

@Frank don't make me transcript

11 mins ago, by Frank
Is GamerGate still a topic we avoid here? I've got a link I wouldn't mind sharing, but I don't know if it's something we want to talk about yet.

And I think this weekend, @badp said we were allowing it.

@fredley Even though one mod said it was okay and another has actively participated in discussions about it lately?
@fredley Don't make me transcript!

The whole thing started with asking for permission, not sure why the mod abuse

5:02 PM
@Frank ok I missed that.

Just so we're clear, then: Are we allowing this topic, as of this moment?

@Batophobia Came in, saw it being discussed

Death to the blue porkchop! *by noms

If we're not, then I'm fine dropping it.

No time for reading context, use mod powers, then investigate

5:03 PM
I just want us to be clear and on the same page about it.

I think only certain people make it a dangerous topic, because right now it's fine

Unbanned for a whole week now!
Oct 13 at 13:55, by badp
@Sterno It's been a while since the last time chat exploded over this so I'm willing to let it stay and see what happens

@Frank I don't even know what it is, nor do I want to, but if badp's okayed it then I'm okay with it
@Rapitor I can believe that. Please try and stay civil

I don't think it's kersploded since then.

@Sterno okay
Sorry for the accidentally on purpose mod abuse

5:04 PM
Alright, I think we're good, then.

Sep 22 at 19:13, by Sterno
Now excuse me while I go find out what @Frank's position is so I can take the opposite one.

@Batophobia Always a solid plan.

@fredley No worries. It just gives us a reason to scream mod abuse.
And you know that's a time honored tradition.

@frank I'm amused that we recently agreed in meta on something but for completely opposite reasons.

@Sterno Eh?
We talking about lore?

5:05 PM
@Frank @badp's answer about the lore stuff.

@fredley Apology not accepted, nor will it ever be. Never forgive. Ever. For anything.

Given how much everyone loves screaming mod abuse, isn't it great that there are mods here to abuse you?

@fredley Acceptable use of notifying how terrible @Wipqozn is

Q: Any downsides to switching "home xbox" setting with my brother?

Lasse V. KarlsenMy brother recently bought an Xbox One. I have a lot more games on my account than he has on his, but I am wondering if the following setup might give either of us a downside? I add my account to his Xbox, and set it as my home xbox If he at some point buys games I haven't bought, we do the sa...

@Frank What I mean is, "social justice warrior" is in my experience usually used as a word for people who pervert social justice movements to get attention for themselves and censor ideas they don't like. Though you're probably right that it's primarily used in this context as ad hominem.

5:06 PM
I say leave them open, you say nuke them all, but we both agree the in-between thing is not good

@murgatroid99 Apparently I unlocked a bunch of achievements a few days ago when I logged in. 9 achievements

@Ktash Wow

@Sterno I like my solution because it involves throwing out all lore questions.
And I don't like lore here.

@murgatroid99 Yeah, I didn't realize it. But I have a bunch that unlocked 8 days ago and I don't think I was playing much then

I hadn't picked up on that!
Honestly, 80% of the lore here could probably be shipped to SciFi.SE anyawy.

5:07 PM
@murgatroid99 It makes it easy to strawman a position, without actually digging deeper into the actual issues. Just, "social justice warrior = bad, therefore your opinion isn't worth actually discussing"
@Sterno Just wanted to make sure we were clear on that.
Because I hate lore here.
But on a more serious note, I do agree that the in between we currently have means we're just going to keep hitting this issue, over and over and over.

@Frank Right, but you could use basically any pejorative to do that. My point was that the Polygon article specifically calls out that "GamerGaters" oppose "social justice warriors", and that this implies something about their character, when it's really just the name they use for people they want to discredit.

And that's exactly what I said over a year ago:
@SevenSidedDie That's been my stance from day one. And, really, that's what this entire discussion is going to boil down to. Either we allow any and all lore questions, or we outright ban them all. There's no middle ground in here (that I can see, anyways) that will resolve the main problem we have with lore in the first place. — Frank Sep 20 '13 at 20:35
@murgatroid99 Labels are powerful things.
Whether they're accurate or not doesn't matter.

@Frank So many downvotes in that thread.

@Frank I'm not really sure what you mean there.

@Sterno One of my best answers is on your follow up question, and it's, I think, my most heavily downvoted answer, too.

5:14 PM
@Frank Just the question of "Should they be banned?", without even proposing that "Yes, they should be" received 17 downvotes

@Sterno Discussion is banned.

@StrixVaria If a mod said it, it's binding!

Lore is banned.
Did that work?

@murgatroid99 By labelling all those that oppose you as social justice warriors, it stops you from having to acknowledge the alternate points, and just lump them all together.

Can I go delete all lore questions now?

5:15 PM
@StrixVaria Yes!

@StrixVaria Wait, does this mean we're not allowed to talk about things, or just not about the lore discussion?

@Unionhawk Talking is banned.

@Sterno Huh. I didn't even see that. I didn't vote on your question.

Where's Matthew Read been lately?
We clearly don't have enough Meta drama anymore.

Anyway I just had a ridiculously chocolately chocolate tort and I'm going to go into a coma now.
@Sterno I wouldn't mind seeing him step back in to see if I still vehemently disagree with everything he says now that my position has changed somewhat.

5:17 PM
@StrixVaria You're the king? Well, I didn't vote for you.

You don't vote for kings

Apparently Scootaloo deleted his account.
SO MANY DIRTY ACCOUNT DELETERS

I thought that happened a while ago

cc @OrigamiRobot

@Frank I'm not arguing with that point. I just mean that the specific label of "social justice warrior" doesn't imply anything substantial about the people who use it to discredit people.

5:19 PM
@Sterno And then...came back, I'm pretty sure.

I don't know. Hasn't showed up in chat, isn't active on site, therefore doesn't exist

They always come back.

@murgatroid99 It just gives them a single, monolithic entity to attack.

@Sterno No they don't.

5:21 PM
@Sterno I don't think the original deleter will come back. RIP Mark Trapp.

@Unionhawk You just have to look at the long game on this. Even @Powerlord came back!

Which means critical thought doesn't need to happen, as having such a huge entity to attack allows them to go, "We're the persecuted minority! This is our enemy!"

@StrixVaria I feel like there should be some sort of automatic response to "RIP Mark Trapp". You know, like "So say we all", or "Amen"

@Sterno Until Mark Trapp comes back... no they don't.

@Sterno Or, "Good riddance"

5:22 PM
@Frank Blasphemy!

@Frank flags

@Frank I never had an issue with him. I never really was clear on why he left.

@Frank WTB One @Frank ban.

@Sterno It's no secret I didn't see eye to eye with him.

@murgatroid99 "How dare these people strive toward social justice!"

5:22 PM
His arguing style left a lot to be desired.

I thought his arguing style was efficient.

@StrixVaria I saw it as, "You don't agree with me, therefore you don't see the whole issue, therefore you're not even worth arguing with"

We have had arguments in this room that went around in circles for hours, covering the same points over and over.

@DwarfSlice I think you just missed my entire point.

Yeah, I read it again and I definitely did.

5:23 PM
I just want to cash in my Trapp Bucks

He stated his case, and he was open to new arguments against him, and if you used the same argument again then he didn't bother since he had already addressed his counterpoint to that one.

@StrixVaria He was rude.

Having your entire argument discarded because he didn't like it annoyed the hell out of me.

@JasonBerkan Probably.

@JasonBerkan Oh yea, well you're rude.
And you smell.

5:24 PM
@Frank lol

Hard to argue with someone who refused to even acknowledge you had a point.

Hey now, @JasonBerkan is Canadian. Everyone knows Canadians can't be rude.

@OrigamiRobot All the time, you jerk.

Also @MarkTrapp rocks.

@Frank Reminds me of someone else I know. :)

5:25 PM
@Ktash wrong? that's gorgeous

@Sterno Oh buuuuurrnnn

@Sterno I don't agree with you, but I'm always happy to at least agree to disagree, after we've hashed it out.
This would be like you going, "Nope, lore's on-topic, no problem here, move along"

Arguing with @Frank is like arguing with a brick wall most of the time.
6

@Frank The best thing about disagreeing with someone is that you don't have to agree to disagree. You can just do it!

5:26 PM
@Rapitor No. Just no. It is too tall. And everything is too big anyway. And the colors and UI. And the voice. And so much. And the mongoose has a front turret now?!?!

@StrixVaria Anyway, he left because he simply didn't like the direction the site was moving. It turned into an ordeal because a bug revealed all his voting when he deleted.

@Sterno And we do it all the time!

Also, it is certain affinity who did a terrible job with the last maps they did for halo

Which is good, because the world burns when we agree.

@OrigamiRobot I knew the second part.
I don't understand people who delete their accounts because they don't like the direction the site is moving. You can even more easily simply stop participating, with the option of returning in the future if the site has learned from the error of its ways and reverted back to a place that you like.

5:27 PM
@Wipqozn I truly do try my hardest to avoid being even slightly rude on the site. I feel it is a very important part of building a community.

@StrixVaria Stopping isn't so simple for some people.
(like me)

I guess I can see that.

@JasonBerkan I, for one, find your desire to not be rude very rude.
OOOOH SNAP! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW JASON?!?

@JasonBerkan Everyone should do this.

(also I think trying your hardest not to be rude is a good idea and something everyone should try to do)

5:29 PM
(please remove wipqozn in response please remove wipqozn in response)

@Wipqozn Well, I have called the people in here jerks on occasion.
@Unionhawk I can't. It's in my contract.

@JasonBerkan Well, you think downvoting meta questions is rude, therefore your entire point is moot!
Moot, I say!

YOU HAVE DISAPPOINTED ME

Anyone who thinks I'm being rude just doesn't know me well enough. /notruescotsman

5:30 PM
(Yes, I'm totally strawmanning your position to make a joke)

Q: Passivist method of defense

TylerIn an effort to keep my trophy count low, I haven't yet attack another player in the week or so since I started playing CoC. So far, I've only been attacked once even though my resources usually hover around 50k (TH4). My idea is that, even though the prospective benefit from attacking me is rela...

@Frank You typed that before I could get in my joke response. Oh well. It wasn't that funny.

@StackExchange How rude.

5:31 PM
@StackExchange How rude.

@StackExchange All hail @TimStone! Hero of men (and woman)!
3

@Sterny!!

@Ktash Mongoose was given a turret to compete with Ghosts, it was in Halo CE for the PC. Voice is original(or halo 4), size looks the same.

@StrixVaria We know it's not black-and-white.

5:32 PM
Do you though?

We just don't think leaving in grey fixes anything.
Which is one of the rare things we agree on.
Be right back, setting the world on fire.

@StrixVaria I'm not against grey. I'm against a specific shade of grey.

@Rapitor That was not the point of the goose though. And it may have been modded in for Halo CE PC, but it isn't there normally. Also, the voice is the same, the recording filters are not

We also acknowledge the third option exists, but simply think it sucks.

I'll buy that

5:34 PM
I think we should just ban all conversation between @Sterno and @Frank.

I just like linking that URL.

if thinking it sucks means we don't acknowledge it, then really we each only have a single color

@Wipqozn @Sterno would have no drama, then!

If you're going to do an HD update of those, you have to not touch anything. They are too ingrained in fans' minds. You can't mess with maps, you can't tweak settings, and you can't make it more modern. You have to remake it, and live with the warts

@Frank Exactly. Talking with @Sterno just makes him too happy.

5:35 PM
@Ktash you do know the updated maps are only additions. all the old ones are there too

The last thing I want is for you people to be happy.

@Wipqozn That's easy to solve, then.

with old rules and all

Just ban @Sterno, and he can't be happy, then.

6 mins ago, by Wipqozn
(also I think trying your hardest not to be rude is a good idea and something everyone should try to do)
You're so bad at everything!

5:35 PM
Heh, I thought I'd need a lot of health to get the five minutes without air achievement in BL, but my Wilhelm apparently has enough health regeneration that he can never die of suffocation.

@Rapitor Yeah, but I'd rather they spend development time on other things then bad remakes of old maps (which certain affinity does a lot of)

@Frank Or would an unjust banning of myself, and the resulting drama, actually make me happy?

@Sterno I try.

@Sterno Let's find out!

@TimStone Heh. Nice.

5:36 PM
I think our policy on lore (should we not ban it) should be something like this: Questions and answers should make their best effort to only speak about canon from video games specifically. If a question asks a thing that's not explained by the video game's canon, then the answer is "It's not explained in the video game canon."

I'd probably get it with claptrap's regen, but he doesn't breathe or suffocate

@StrixVaria Ew. That's a horribad answer.

@Frank You're horribad.

@StrixVaria Only sometimes.

@StrixVaria what about canon/lore from outside sources. like books or more recently Desinty's Grimiore?

5:37 PM
@StrixVaria You can tell @Frank disagrees with this because that's my stance as well.

@Rapitor Not video games.

@Sterno I left for specific reason.

must... stay... out... of... lore... debate...

@StrixVaria I am fine with this as well.

Oh god destiny

5:37 PM
they are still lore and can mean whether or not the question is answerable.

I've just come to accept that if we allow lore questions we're going to run into situations like this, and we just need to live with it.

I was having a good time pretending it didn't exist

Also, good job to me dropping lettuce on my keybord mid-sentence.

thanks @Rapitor

to jump in I'm for-lore.. as I'm a lorenut...

5:37 PM
@Wipqozn No! Ban all lore!

@Rapitor Not video games = not on Arqade, IMO.

@Unionhawk Yeah, I like how they make a nod to that when you get the first Oz Kit, mentioning it's nice to have even if you're not in on that whole breathing thing.

@Powerlord I am familiar with your reason.

@StrixVaria What about the WOW lore?
failed

@TimStone Yep.

5:38 PM
yesterday, by Frank
@StrixVaria Our policy on lore is incredibly broad. Entire canon means everything. Not just in-game lore, but everything in the universe. Books, movies, you name it. If it's part of the universe, we apparently accept it.

If you're saying your back now because he quit, I'm not sure that fits, because the idea behind him being elected has not changed.

You still get the "WARNING NO OXYGEN" audio alerts, which can be annoying, and incentive enough to keep it topped off

So, Symantec makes a tool that fixes the specific problem I'm having and won't give it to me

@Frank That is the current status quo, but I don't like the state of things.

And that makes our stance untenably broad.
@StrixVaria Neither do I! We should just ban all lore entirely!

5:39 PM
@Frank Why?

@Ktash We are gamers.

I thought the big problem with Lore questions was the lack of a way to tell from the question itself whether or not it was on-topic?

Our expertise comes from playing games.

@Ktash Answers from video games are acceptable; anything that requires additional lore knowledge is not required for a good answer and I would even say you shouldn't include it even if you know it.

YOUR expertise comes from playing games.

5:39 PM
@Frank And? I read all that lore. I'm interested in games and their universes. I'm an expert at it

Not reading books, not going through wiki sites, not watching movies.
That's incidental expertise.

@StrixVaria Lore is still part of the game. for example, in Halo Reach you meet with certain characters you wouldnt really know who they are or where they stand without reading the books. so the question "who was in the cryochamber at the end" couldn't really be answered without reading the book or guessing (example)

Not our core expertise.

I know how to fix this. Someone Area51 up GamingLore.SE

changing it to be about the game only wouldn't fix the underlying problem: you only know if it's on topic if you know the answer

5:40 PM
@Sterno No, my expertise is to be opinionated and stubborn.

@Sterno And see if it's marked as a duplicate of Arqade?

@Frank I would very much disagree. That's like saying star wars is only the movies. It isn't. And a star wars expert should know more than just the movie lore

DAMN IT THAT'S MINE TOO

@Sterno A better wording of what he's trying to say is, "This website is made specifically for people who play games, where playing games is the core expertise. Tangentially related expertises are coincidental only, and we should focus on our core expertise."

We should go be mods together on OpinionatedAndStubborn.SE

5:41 PM
@Sterno i can bet someone from outside will create a discussion "why not put on arqade?"

@Rapitor Then the answer should be "This isn't really explained in the game." Since it's not.

@StrixVaria but is answerable and is still part of the game

@Rapitor The character appears in the game but is not explained. The answer should say exactly that.

In other news, my daughter is sweet and wonderful and definitely does not pick her nose and then try to wipe her boogers on me when I'm not looking, then run away giggling

@Ktash And that's a Star Wars expert. Not a gaming expert.

5:42 PM
@Sterno Best thing ever

@Ktash But we are not Star Wars experts, we are gaming experts.
Wait @Frank said that already.
WHAT AM I DOING

@Sterno I would agree with this!
...@Sterno and I mods on the same site.
That's like nuclear explosions waiting to happen.
@StrixVaria Agreeing with me, apparently.

That's okay. If mods on OpinionatedAndStubborn.SE agreed on things, they'd be doing it wrong.

@Sterno Do we nuke the site on a weekly basis?

@StrixVaria So anything not in the game is off topic for anything. Even the manual of the game is off topic

5:43 PM
@Frank Yes. And my statement was an analogy.

@Frank If you think we should, then no.

@Batophobia This is why lore is such a fun topic!
Because whenever you try to lay down a rule that isn't "blanked open" or "blanket close", everyone comes up with a million edge cases.

@Ktash And my statement is that we have a core expertise, and we should focus on that, not on everything that could be related to that.

@StrixVaria Which is why all lore questions should be examined individually
All types of questions have good versions and bad versions

@Sterno I insist! We must start from scratch every single week!

5:45 PM
I'm done with this discussion. SCREW YOU GUYS, I'M GOING TO CLASS.

@Rapitor @Batophobia Would you be happier with a rule along the lines of "Questions that aren't directly related to the in-game lore should be disallowed." So for example, if you asked about that Halo guy @Rapitor is concerned about it's fine, but if you ask about something that's novel-only then that's off topic.

@Batophobia I have not seen a single lore question on the site I would call good.

@Batophobia But you still need guidelines.

@StrixVaria We worry too much about edge cases in my opinion. We should never be applying rules blindly. They should be seen more as guidelines, than anything else. We're all intelligent people capable of understanding situations which are a special case and therefore ane xception to the rule. We don't need to detail each and every case, but instead deal with them on a case by case basis.

All of them are fluff and useless.

5:45 PM
Otherwise there's just a big close/open vote fight.

@StrixVaria that's good for me

Boo. Just got my first gilded hero and it was Athena :(

@StrixVaria If a lore question comes up from the game you are playing, the question is fine, it's about the game

If all we are is experts at playing video games, then we are less helpful than most gaming sites out there. That would mean that we are are only a targeted version of gamefaqs (which would be a more apt name). That is not our expertise. Our expertise is video games. And video games include plot. And video games sometimes take place in expansive universes. And that knowledge helps and improves video games. So yes, that is exactly our expertise! And if it isn't, then there is no point to us
10

if someone questions the book. other stack exchanges may exist for that
scfi and fantasy for example

5:46 PM
@Ktash I like this wording, actually. We are experts at video games, not at just playing them.

@Sterno athena isn't bad, although not the best for your first gild

@Ktash \clap

@Ktash That's sorta the point. We're not GameFAQs, and thank your god for that! We are more focused than them, and that's a good thing.

I think that knowledge that someone would acquire normally through gaming, even if it's not directly gaming-related, should also be on topic. For example, setting up firewalls.

@Ktash I agree 100%. This is why I believe we should allow a wider scope when it comes to hardware questions.

5:48 PM
Don't knock GameFAQS too hard. I still tend to find the best info there.

Q: Are there any easy methods for unlocking the First Contact achievement?

Colin DAre there any reliable strategies/tips for unlocking the 'First Contact' achievement?

@StrixVaria Agree with this too.

@StrixVaria Only if it is directly related to a game

@Batophobia What counterexample do you have for this?

We have not had a problem with lore questions yet. I have not seen a flood of terrible questions asking about completely unrelated and tangential things. I feel like this is a solution in search of a problem
We should handle questions as they come, and use your votes appropriately

5:50 PM
@StrixVaria "Why is my firewall blocking Facebook" is not a good question for Arqade

@Batophobia Ok, good point.

@Ktash yeah, I rarely see lore questions for all the drama we have over it.

@StrixVaria Setting up firewalls is something we acquire?
@Ktash There's at least some grumbling about each and every single lore question we get.

@Frank Yes, it is. If you host gaming servers this is something you learn to do.

@Ktash I cannot disagree with this more.
@Wipqozn So that means we're now experts on everything related to gaming?
That's a rather large expansion of our scope.

5:54 PM
I learned how to do port forwarding when trying to play Killing Floor with my friends, and being able to do port forwarding was essential to being able to play online with my friends.

@Wipqozn So that means you're now an expert on every single firewall, and can help anyone configure theirs?

@Frank No... that is our scope. Gaming. That's why the URL bar says what it says

@Ktash Gaming != firewall configuration.

@Frank YES
9
That is what this site is.

speaking of halo. Here's a Trailer for Halo Nightfall TV show

5:56 PM
@Frank Why?
What do you disagree with and why?

I love this discussion because once again I disagree with @Frank. It just happens so effortlessly!

@Frank Configuring a firewall to work with a game is related to gaming, and is something I believe falls under the expertise of a gaming expert.

I agree

@Ktash While this is a great statement. Any speculation about said plots and universes are immediately closed or moved to SciFi because none of us are the creators of the games to know why. [shrug] We are a Video Game/Hardware FAQ site, just look at our questions and answers :)
