Post-commit triggers are awesome stuff if used right. You can automatically set up builds and run regression tests as well. Here's one question on how to set up Jenkins for that, for example:
11
Q: How to configure Git post commit hook

phanikumar RajaI am new to Jenkins. How to trigger a build remotely from Jenkins? Can anybody tell how to configure Git post commit hook? My requirement is whenever changes are made in the Git repository for a particular project it will automatically start Jenkins build for that project. In Jenkins trigger ...

@Sterno Has anyone ever thought to let those in charge of such decisions be aware of the lunacy of this policy?

@skovacs1 That's what I did when I joined the project 2 months ago. The client has no interest in changing it because the bureaucracy involved in doing so is a nightmare on their end
Government regulated industries ftw

I think I've mentioned it here before, but it's probably worth mentioning again: Game Music Bundle 5 is up, and for a dollar or ten you get some incredible soundtracks

@Sterno The bureaucracy made a mess and made it so well that refuse to clean up after themselves. This is what happens when people who've never dealt with code in their lives make decisions about code practices.
Or at least haven't dealt with code in the last decade or two.
@PrivatePansy Cool deal. If I didn't already have all those soundtracks, I would've pounced when I first saw it posted. They are indeed very good soundtracks.

@skovacs1 Don't forget: Until recently, to HR "advanced computer skills" was extensive use of Microsoft Office.

1:06 PM
In other news, having C# properties with setters but no getters is just stupid.

@Sterno How is that even possible? And what's the point?

@PrivatePansy To question #1: public string MyStupidProperty {set;}
To question #2: I have no fucking idea.
Actually, #1 might work, but what they really do is stuff like public string MyStupidPropery { set { doSomeDumbStuff(value); } }
Basically, they use it as a method
But there are things that already act like methods. They're called methods.

@skovacs1 I currently have 350 hours into Monster Hunter .Money well spent.

Hm... I have simultaneously achieved one of the most embarrassingly prolonged death sentences in a single character challenge and obtained a newfound empathy for high HP boss enemies whose take-down strategy consists of essentially stunlocking them for twenty minutes.

@Wipqozn Fair enough. I haven't really had 350 free hours to dedicate to any one game since the release of MH3U so I feel I wouldn't have gotten the same value.

1:13 PM
@Wipqozn I'm around ~260.

@Wipqozn I'm at around 20 minutes.

I'm at zero.

@GraceNote So you're saying you got stun-locked to death? I hate when games make that possible. No matter how good you're doing, one little exploit like that can destroy you and there's often next to nothing that you can even do about it.

@skovacs1 It's an exceedingly contrived situation that I got myself in so it's not like something that can easily happen.

@Sterno Better slow down there before it consumes your life.

1:15 PM
@GraceNote In MH3, probably, but in general, I've seen games where this sort of design flaw is prevalent. On a side note, I hate fighting games.

@Wipqozn My life can't be consumed anymore. Minecraft has eaten it already.

@skovacs1 This was in Final Fantasy V, I don't have any Monster Hunter game.

@skovacs1 I don't think she was t- thre you go. I was right.

@GraceNote What did you run into that stunlocked you and then spent twenty minutes murdering you?

user43095
I have a code for EA in-game content, who wants it?

1:18 PM
@GraceNote How the hell? I can see certain enemies repeatedly inflicting incapacitating status ailments repeatedly, but I never had it happen. What did you do?

@skovacs1 You don't play roguelikes much, do you?

Gloom Widows have Needle, an attack that inflicts Paralysis and damage, and Thread, which inflicts slow. They also have a very specific loop of attacks that they perform and I happened to run into one that got hasted and happened to start up at the worst possible point in the loop.

user43095
Enter K37CKRK3PBKX at crest.ea.com and then get The Sim's cash or whatever.

@GraceNote Ew.

@MartinSojka Very few and exceptionally cautiously. It takes me forever to get through an area. I always keep lines of escape ready and strike from as far away as I can. I run at the first sign of trouble and only inch my way back once I feel safe enough to continue.

1:21 PM
The attack program loop is... I think it was 25 attacks long, and consistently lands a Needle hit 4/5 times right after the paralysis ends, and the last one happens right before your ATB gauge fills. I had a regen effect on, though, so instead of this being a swift demise, I essentially took 100 damage every 25 turns up until the last sequence, for 2000 HP.

I hated Needle.

I could actually load this up and tell you the exact attack loop.

@GraceNote Rough. Save early, save often. You saved after winning the fight previous to that one or at the last available save point, right?

Got tons of saves to work off of, aye.
I took an extra save mid battle when I noticed a distinctly inescapable pattern.

When you live where you work, there are mixed feelings

1:31 PM
Oh, it's actually 27 turns. ANAT.N,TNAN.N,TTNT.N,TANN.N,TNTN.TTN,

@skovacs1 Isn't it supposed to be "when you work where you live..."
Your version bears a meaning of living so you can work.

@Arperum Yeah. That's pretty much how I feel about my life. I moved here and into this space just for this job.

@GraceNote stun-locks are dumb, long live Mega Man style invincibility frames and patterns. You know, except the stun-lockable bosses...
That was more a problem in earlier mega man games though. MM Zero and on don't allow it at all

Yay! DLC for that game that was fun for a while us.battle.net/d3/en/reaper-of-souls

That's because they largely did away with the concept of hugely debilitating weaknesses.

1:35 PM
@GraceNote Which is great. Hated those
Basically locked you into a specific loop of bosses, often with one ideal starting point no less, and made the bosses a total joke
Bosses should be a capstone of difficulty for a level, not an if-then of whether you got the right gun before this level

@skovacs1 Oh, yay. D3 expansion got announced?

I wonder how popular D3 still is

@fbueckert not yet. They're teasing right now.

Two minutes per cycle, so... that's roughly 40 minutes I wasted earlier watching this run through.

1:38 PM
Based on their teases, it will probably be announced at gamescom.

@BenBrocka That is actually one way to do it.
Not a very efficient way, but it works, nonetheless.

I like how the initial "separation" magically doesn't completely obliterate the core of the craft

@skovacs1 Teasers are literally the worst thing ever. No, wait. Teasers for other teasers are literally the worst thing ever.

@fbueckert That's why they are called teasers....

@BenBrocka Explosions don't actually have any physics attached to them; they're just pretty lights.

1:40 PM
I actually saw a poster for D3 at Gamestop when I was there over the weekend. Was kinda surprised that I heard about the expansion there before here.

Well, they're revving up the hype machine for the console launch and they'll piggyback the DLC to bring back some of the PC community.

@GraceNote Did you run into $90 "used" copies of Xenoblade while you were there?

I didn't look.

@skovacs1 I'm only coming back if they provide offline play. I will not buy any more Blizzard games until that happens.

I'll come back if they make the game fun again.

1:43 PM
@fbueckert Hoping same-day digital for all games on Xbox 1 and PS4 will eliminate that (for new games anyway). That way physical copies always have to compete with, at worst, full priced digital games

@fbueckert This is like the most horrible thing. "Competitive Pricing" my ass. Who are they competing with? The game is so rare and because of the exclusive deal, they have the monopoly on supply.

@fbueckert freaking price gougers. Last time I checked, a new Xenoblade game cost 45 € at a local electronic store.

@BenBrocka If anything, digital should be much cheaper than physical versions, due to the elimination of 90% of the logistical overhead.

@skovacs1 Competetive pricing from third party resellers (because there are no "new" copies thanks to gamestop)

@BenBrocka And if they were "new", they could only sell it for the MSRP.

1:44 PM
@fbueckert Yeah, but only for delivery, the game still cost and is worth a reasonable sum. You're not paying $60 for them to print the bluray

@BenBrocka There's a not inconsequential cost to printing, shipping, and storing the physical copies.

@fbueckert Yeah, and they don't have to sell "new" copies like that since no one else has new copies to sell. It's almost like competition matters

And that cost goes up linearly with the more you make.
For digital, you frontload most of the cost, and each additional copy costs pennies.

@fbueckert Yeah, but a lot of people seem to think digital games should be significantly cheaper, like $20 cheaper, than physical versions, that's not going to happen. But a straight 5-10% price deduction or something would be nice though

@fbueckert There's still the cost of running servers.

1:46 PM
@OrigamiRobot Frontload. That's an upfront cost.

But, I don't care as much about NEW diigtal games price as I do about OLD digital game prices; digital games' prices should drop just like physical ones do

@fbueckert Pretty sure maintaining servers is an ongoing cost.

@OrigamiRobot It is.

Well maybe not "just like" but 3 year old digital games shouldn't still be $60

@OrigamiRobot Yes, and that's what selling more down the road pays for.

1:47 PM
There is an upfront cost and a ongoing cost.

@fbueckert I'm just saying it's not upfront.

@BenBrocka Old physical games have the competition in the form of used game market. Most digital games don't.

@OrigamiRobot though technically Sony/MS pay that cost not the publisher/developer. You have to support physical printing of your game, not as much digital

@Wipqozn The total cost, however, is still lower than manufacturing and printing physical disks.

@MartinSojka old digital games have competition in the form of newer games, that's why stuff goes on sale on Steam, to get people to buy again

1:48 PM
@OrigamiRobot Which is where the "cost" of additional copies down the road comes in.

55 secs ago, by OrigamiRobot
@fbueckert I'm just saying it's not upfront.

@BenBrocka Physical games have the same competition though.

No more no less.

3 mins ago, by fbueckert
For digital, you frontload most of the cost, and each additional copy costs pennies.
It's one statement, dude.
You only addressed the first part, and ignored the last.

No, I just disagree.

1:51 PM
@MartinSojka But their price goes down. And not JUST because of used copies IMO. Even if there weren't used copies I have to imagine we'd be seeing the $20 "greatest hits" stuff being released. Maybe at a slightly higher price point, but the price would still come down from peak
Though Xbox and PS3 seem to be getting better at actually having sales, so maybe next gen will be closer to Steam in that games get cheaper and there are sales and such on digital

@BenBrocka That would be nice.
I don't think the competition is there, though, since it's their own walled gardens.
You pay what they want you to pay, or you don't get to play it.

@BenBrocka Not for EA games.

@fbueckert Maybe not at the level of Steam, but PSN has sales more or less monthly
@OrigamiRobot EA is Special(TM)
Which reminds me, if you have a Vita you should get Touch My Katamari, it's $3.75 for PS+ people right now

@BenBrocka is the vita worth buying? Games seem to be sparse

I think we can all agree that games are generally expensive and we'd all love for them to be cheaper.
@5pike I love my vita for the sexy beast that it is, but it does lack for the software it needs to sell.

1:55 PM
Morning, Bridge!

@5pike There will be a Gust exclusive down the road. I'd pick it up for that alone.
@skovacs1 And that's why all of us love Steam.

@RonanForman @RedRiderX @GnomeSlice I discovered that the Steam install of Hammerwatch is actually DRM free. If you copy the Hammerwatch folder out, you can use it anywhere

@SaintWacko Wha?

@skovacs1 Bought my PSP used for 150€. If I can make such a deal with a Vita, I might consider buying one.

@RedRiderX Yep. I copied it to my flash drive

1:56 PM
Definitely buy one, once it gets hacked....

@5pike A vita + PS+ results in a decent supply of free games (though maybe half of them are PSP games). If you have digital PSP/PSX games it's even more worth it since you can play those too

Then closed Steam, and was still able to use it

@SaintWacko That's hilarious.

@fbueckert I do love most parts of Steam. Their customer support, data consistency and library management features have proven to be lacking.

Uncharted, Gravity Rush and Wipeout 2048 are free with PS+ (and seem to be so permanently) and those alone make the purchase worth it for a couple months, and there's other good stuff kicking around. Lots of indie stuff on there/upcoming for Vita too
If you're getting a PS4 the remote play for Vita sounds kickass too

1:59 PM
@BenBrocka gravity rush is awesome. DLC is a bit pricey for what it contains though.

@BenBrocka My brother's going to get a ps4 at launch (I hope I can convince him to wait). I might get one, then.

Yeah, the DLC is a bit much so I haven't bought it. Though I got the game free so I'm tempted to just buy it to support them/have an excuse to play it again
@5pike I honestly don't see much reason to wait. Unless you're waiting for the first price drop (expect that over a year down the line) you're just preventing yourself from playing games. Unless you literally can't afford or won't play games in the meantime, that is

@SaintWacko I just tried it as well, you don't even need to move it out of steamapps or delete files or anything, Hah!

@RedRiderX Nope, but the whole reason I wanted it DRM free was to put it on my flash drive :)

@SaintWacko Neat, I wonder if other games let you do that

2:02 PM
Also, as an added bonus, it stores the saves right in the game folder

@BenBrocka The main reason why I wait is because I am a filthy pirate.

@SaintWacko Well I'm glad it worked out for you mate.

@BenBrocka Some do. Terraria, for example, doesn't
Unless you download a custom launcher type thing for it

@BenBrocka There will be some exclusives, but I doubt there will be that many.
Most games will be made for new gen and last gen, because not everyone will pick up a new gen system right away.

@BenBrocka I remember there's a wiki page for that, let me see if I can find it

2:08 PM
I have a PS4 pre-ordered. Considered going for an xbone, but I deliberately cap my VISA at $500 so I can never get in serious trouble with it, and after taxes, xbone is out of my price range.

@skovacs1 Rule number one when buying a new console: NEVER buy at launch
Wait - that's my rule

I still remember what happens with the launch PS3s.
That's one boneheaded move I sincerely hope they don't repeat with the PS4.

@fbueckert Also remember 3ds, Vita and WiiU
All those no-games

I can cancel my preorder whenever I like. If the game horizon looks too sparse, I will.

2:11 PM
@5pike I grabbed a Wii U for Monster Hunter alone.

@fbueckert I never got into monster hunter

And will grab a Vita specifically for the Gust game coming out for it.

@fbueckert downvoted and flagged

@5pike Super fun, but it takes a while to get into as it starts off slowly weaning you into the mechanics. It's a lot better if you play with friends...or so I am told by people with friends.

@fbueckert I regret nothing.

2:13 PM
@skovacs1 Well, I have no friends with a WiiU (or Wii)

@fbueckert Except there actually is a reason to have bought a PS3 at launch.

I might get it for the wii and see how it is
Was very annoyed how slow it was on the PSP
and the loading times were aggravating

@OrigamiRobot Good! The purchase was worth it for you, then?

Not to mention that I work, and don't have to much time

@5pike I prefer it on a console; more screen, and less awkwardness.

2:15 PM
@fbueckert I have a mere 130 hours in the game. Can't say that for many games anymore.

Q: Continue single player session Battlefield Vietnam

TheVNCore teamI know this is a pretty old game, but I just dig up my old hdd. This happens when I created a single player game, and pressing Esc to pause as many other games do. But how can I continue the game, after pressing Esc? It seems impossible to me.

Q: How do I get my tools back?

TheAceI was talking to the sprite behind my tool shed one day, and he offered to upgrade my hammer. Then I spoke to him again and he offered to upgrade my hoe. It's been longer then he said it would be to complete the upgrades, so now he has both my tools, and won't give them back. How can I get them ...

Q: Crusader Kings 2: How do I give away Duchies?

BillJust picked up CK2 and trying to figure out how to survive. I started with the Stamford Bridge scenario as William. I've won the war and taken England, but of course my English vassals hate me. I want to start giving away Duchies to my loyal Norman buddies, but can't figure out how. I've revo...

@Lazers @OrigamiRobot I'm not sure if that's the correct tag for the game; I don't think HM2 has sprites.

@fbueckert Agreed. I recall it being great fun the first time I played it back on the 'ole Wii.

@skovacs1 And 3U is essentially an upgrade of Tri.

@fbueckert I was just removing the tags I knew it didn't need.

2:17 PM
And now that I actually have people to play with, I've made it much further than I did in Tri.
@OrigamiRobot Which was all of them. :P

Well, I hope I can find some time to try it again

But if the loading times are anything near the ones on the PSP....

I mean, heck, we got @Strix to play it again. :P
@5pike Areas are still a thing.
There's still lots of load time; I think that's a staple of Monster Hunter.

@fbueckert I missed that.

2:19 PM
@fbueckert Is the "lots" long?

@5pike As I recall, most PSP games had brutal loads. There are still loads between areas, but they aren't long.

I remember 15~30 seconds loading times between areas

And really, the zone divisions actually have a use; gives you a breather for when you need to do stuff, like sharpen your weapon or drink a potion.
@5pike Yeah, they're not that long.

@fbueckert Good

If you're really worried about it, you can always grab the digital version of it; no disk load times to contend with.

2:20 PM
@fbueckert I already mentioned that I am a filthy pirate
so it's always digital

@fbueckert Going between zones is fairly instant for me.

I also doubt that I would find a copy around my place

@OrigamiRobot Do you have a digital copy, or a disk?

@fbueckert Disk

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, it takes a couple seconds for me. Not long, but not instantaneous.
@5pike Well, good luck with the Wii U, then.
I don't think they've cracked it open yet.

2:22 PM
@fbueckert yeah, yeah. I'll get the Wii version.
If I like it, I might even invest into a WiiU

@5pike Just one word of warning: MH Tri's servers are down, so the village quests are all you'll get.
Not that the online went past High Rank, anyways.

@fbueckert should be enough

@5pike We have a chat room specifically for MH; you're welcome to join us there.

 Monster Hunter

All Monster Hunter talk, all the time. Or, just about anythin...

@fbueckert I will, once I know if I like it. I hope I can remember getting it, once I'm home

@5pike I'll just set up a script to tell you every five minutes to get it.

2:28 PM
@fbueckert I just stuck a postit on my phone.
that should remind me

And perhaps we'll have yet another person to hammer into G-Rank!
We had a full party yesterday; we killed G-Rank monsters in ~7 minutes each. It was glorious.

@fbueckert I guess "G" is hard

@5pike There are three "tiers" to the game.
Kinda like Diablo and it's Normal, Nightmare, and Hell difficulties.

So Slough is a fun place

They're Low Rank, High Rank, and G(uild) Rank.
Most of us playing made it into G Rank independently, and are now helping the people not there, get there ASAP.

2:33 PM
@fredley By the name, it sounds disgusting.

@OrigamiRobot It rhymes with Plow, as in Mr.

Q: Using JA2 Stracciatella

vartecI'd like to have Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire running native on Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit). So far I've installed .deb package with JA2 Stracciatella. I've also got original JA2 Wildfire from GOG.com. Where do I go from there? What are the exact steps?

@skovacs1 Suuuuuure. Take my statement literally, why don't you? :P
@GamingTopicsFromOutside Crosspost. I hate it when people do that.

@skovacs1 Why would you willingly throw away 300 €?

2:34 PM
@fredley Mr Plow? I have no idea what that means.

@OrigamiRobot YouTube search

@fredley I am at work.

@5pike Performance art. He also microwaved one a few weeks prior to this video.

@skovacs1 Why are people this stupid?

"Mr. Plow" is the ninth episode of The Simpsons' fourth season, which originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on November 19, 1992. In the episode, Homer buys a snow plow and starts a business plowing driveways. It is a huge success, and inspired by this, Barney Gumble starts a rival company and quickly puts Homer out of business. The episode was written by Jon Vitti and directed by Jim Reardon. In 1993, Dan Castellaneta won an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Voice-Over Performance" for this episode. The episode was also submitted in the "Outstanding Comedy Series" category a...

2:37 PM
@skovacs1 Makes sense. He also sold it for $14,883.00
at least it says on ebay

@5pike Yeah. This guy ebays all the stuff he smashes and microwaves. They apparently sell very well although I can't imagine why.

@5pike +$250.00 shipping >.<

@fredley Anyway, that makes it sound more disgusting.

@OrigamiRobot It reminded me of this
read like sloughbro
until the pronunciation was corrected above
So it becomes something like sloughbrow and I have no clue what that is supposed to be.
DAMNIT STEAM. EVERY SINGLE WEEK DAY!
they keep adding trading cards every day.
making gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/126480/… a complete pain to keep up to date because their data is so buggy.

@skovacs1 the ride never ends

2:49 PM
Based on reading the nearly 200 items so many times, if my memory doesn't fail me, the new ones look to be Europa Universalis 3 Complete, and PAM <-some kind of racing thing.

@skovacs1 If the question requires daily (or almost daily) updates to keep it up to date, that usually means the question is too general, or too localized in time.

@fbueckert probably.

No, the question is fine.

@skovacs1 Either way, we close questions that require that level of updating to stay accurate, due to our track record of being crap at keeping stuff up to date like that.

You just don't need to give the precise one.

2:51 PM
I'd recommend you just give a general formula of how people can determine the max level.
That way, the answer stays up to date, regardless of changes.

> A practical maximum is a restriction on what is achievable with the resources available. Obviously as Steam gets new badges, cards, and other resources, and as badge values change, these numbers will fluctuate. Referencing various steam accounts and other information to determine Game collector badge values and this handy chart in addition to those accounts for the others.

he does give the formula, he just then plugs in current numbers

You don't need the giant wall of text below that.

I'm just neurotic about keeping it up to date. I already state that it is subject to change.

@skovacs1 Well, then.

2:52 PM
@fbueckert Yeah, exactly.

You've brought it upon yourself, and shall receive no sympathy from me!

@Wipqozn It is necessary though as each of those values has to be calculated discretely as part of the equation and different ones have different calculation criteria that are not documented elsewhere.
I could probably aggregate the legacy badges into one point in stead of listing them separately

@skovacs1 You don't need it though. You can just include that paragraph and it's covered.

Oh, Young Guilo finally deleted his wrong answer on that Scroll of Resurrection question. Good.

@Wipqozn No. It isn't covered with just that. It doesn't cover how to get the numbers for either the game collector or trading card badges.

2:56 PM
@fbueckert Peer pressure?

@PrivatePansy He already had that badge.
I don't know what it was at, but it seems he doesn't delete out and out wrong answers until he actually loses rep from it.
I could be wrong, though.

@skovacs1 Yes, but you don't need any of that. You don't need to provide him with how to figure out the technical limit for each badge since steam keeps adding new badges. IT's not required to answer the question.
