@Wipqozn Excellent book. Scott Card has another series, called the Gatekeeper. Not that awesome, but respectable.

@fbueckert Yeah, I finally got aroudn to reading it because a friend recommended Ender's Shadow.

Q: What is the gold ball in the rectangular box in the Ocean House Hotel in Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines?

chaosIn Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines, on the second floor of the Ocean House Hotel, inside the first usable room on the left after you climb the ladder and exit the elevator shaft, there is a bedstand with a rectangular box on it that looks like some kind of velvet-lined collector's case, cont...

@fbueckert I find it difficult to respect anything OSC puts his name on...

The idea of the same story from different POV is really interested so I picked finally got around to picking up enders game.

@Fluttershy Yeah, I know the feeling. It's rough coming to grips with the fact that he's not a very good person.

12:04 AM
quick google
Oh my
well, you can respect the work without respecting the person as a whole.

user15026
@Fluttershy Yeah, it made it hard to enjoy the book because I was like this is not allowed to be good when the man is a.....string of words I can't say here

And you can respect a persons ability as a writer without respecting him as a person

@Wipqozn Yes, but it can make it harder to differentiate betweent he two.

Ender's Game was a great book. It's a good thing there are no sequels or spinoffs which might ruin it.

@OrigamiRobot Indeed.
@Brant Yeah, I'm not sure if I plan to read anything after ender's game.

12:07 AM
Except for Speaker for the Dead which was also pretty good, but that's definitely the only sequel.

My friend who loves both game and shadow said he wasn't nearly as fond asthe other books, since the style of the books was very, very different (see also: inferior).

And definitely don't go see the movie.

@fbueckert The movie looks terrible.
Looks like it'll be super action hero man. All action all the time.
No character.

Speaking of, I haven't gone to see a movie in theaters since Pacific Rim.

Characters are for wussies. FUCKING WUSSIES. YEAH. CHEST PUMP. EXPLOSIONS. FOOTBAAAAAALLL.

12:08 AM
I should drag @TrentHawkins out again.

@Wipqozn Speaker for the Dead is worth reading, but don't bother with the rest

user15026
@fbueckert I never did see that

@Brant Okay. After I finish shadow I'll read Speaker.

Nooooo, Shadow ruined Ender's Game

user15026
Might have been discussed, but this is advocating some sort of piracy, no?

Q: Is there a way to remove the region lock on a 3DS and still connect to the nintendo store

Memor-Xi want to get the etrian odyssey series, the 4th one came out for 3DS so since the 3DS is region locked i was thinking of getting all the games from the same region so that i can play them all of the 3DS without having to search around my room for my old DS Lite when i do a search on ebay howeve...

@AshleyNunn Well, perhaps not piracy, but certainly something in a grey area. I suppose flash cards would bypass region locking pretty easily.

Take that you stupid deer.

user15026
@fbueckert I suspect that it in't possible without any hacking. Otherwise tehre would be no point to them locking it up in the first place

@AshleyNunn That's true. It's a fuzzy area.

user15026
It really is

12:18 AM
Well, there's also the whole price point dealy.

user15026
?

@AshleyNunn I don't think it's piracy related. The question even mentions eBay purchases.

user15026
@Brant It's the whole bypassing the region lock

Apparently, Australia seriously gets the shaft, with something like ~50-100% markup, compared to us.

Well, the motive is clearly something other than "I want to play games without paying for them", which in my book gives them a pass on bypassing whatever ridiculous region-locking bullshit Nintendo came up with because they don't understand the Internet, even though it's technically not totally legal blah blah blah I don't give a crap

user15026
12:20 AM
@Brant That doesn't make it legal or anything, though, personal thoughts aside

user15026
(I mean I hate region locking and all of that, I am not saying any of it is right not by a damned long shot)

I'd rather see a gamer get help with their problem than a nonsensical restriction legally complied with.
(Unless the problem is "I want to play games without paying for them")

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz My music prof showed us a few videos of Jon Gomm's guitar stuff and oh man if you haven't listened to his stuff I really recommend it

user15026
@Brant true, but I figured that as a site we kinda have rules about legality, no?

Or to phrase it another way, if someone can take information we provide to solve the "I bought a region-locked game and want to enjoy it" problem and use it to solve the "I want to play games without paying" problem, that's no reason to deny the first problem a solution, because Pirates Gonna Pirate either way and at least this way somebody is satisfied.

user15026
12:25 AM
@Brant But can we support legally dubious solutions?

I dunno, that's up to the site ownership. Until they weigh in, my preference is to solve people's problems.

There is a reason we don't support piracy. There can be an argument made for both sides on this one.

@Wipqozn We didn't have tutorials.

@fbueckert I agree. I think that in any situation where an argument can be made for both sides, we should default to the side where people's problems get solved.
Subject to individual judgement and all that.
Anyway, high fives all around!

@Brant Eh. It's never that simple. If anything, it'll get closed, re-opened, someone will make a meta that nobody listens to, and the status quo will continue.
This is one I'm not taking sides on.

12:30 AM
Yeah, it's not like I actually have any idea how to solve this fellow's problem anyway...
And yeah, I admit I'm simplifying things, perhaps too much.

"meta that nobody listens to" ... which wouldn't be a thing if people were adhering to site policy rather than going on their own little crusades. cough cough

user15026
@FEichinger yeaaaah............

Now for some liquor

That's the very thing people refer to when they talk about "a handful of people dictating site policy".

user15026
@FEichinger If we could pretend to actually make rules and agree on them that would be cool but we get pockets of loud dissent and it just gets ugly

12:35 AM
Speaking of which, have we finally agreed to drop the argument about lore questions?

user15026
Not a clue

user15026
but then again we still get pockets of ITG argument, so

Nooooooo my disease has gotten worse and now there is always a chance for showers wargh.

And @GraceNote brings back the craycray to the Bridge.

@GraceNote My latest disease makes my hands poisonous.

12:37 AM
Those are not two unrelated things, in case anyone attempts to parse it as "a bad situation getting worse".
@OrigamiRobot This will end your Gold Bell problems.

Ok. Dishes done, Rune Factory bought, all chores complete!
Now I can game guilt-free!

Dishes? GUilt?

@OrigamiRobot My brain tends to poke me if I procrastinate on things it thinks I should do.

user15026
@fbueckert Is Rune Factory something I would like (aka is there more to hold my attention than the repeat-y stuff of Harvest Moon)?

@fbueckert I have done dishes maybe 3 times since I moved in in June

12:44 AM
@AshleyNunn I haven't played it much myself, so I dunno. It's sorta Harvest Moon crossed with Zelda.

user15026
@fbueckert Yeah, it intrigues me for that reason

@OrigamiRobot I have giant dinner plates that don't even fit into the microwave.
And we do dishes every week.

@fbueckert I just don't use plates

Nice to keep it on a regular schedule.

@fbueckert If I did this, I'd be washing clean dishes.

12:46 AM
@OrigamiRobot What do you do? Eat out of the packages?

@fbueckert When I make a sandwich, I use a paper towel

@AshleyNunn Are you talking about a specific Rune Factory or Rune Factory in general?

user15026
@Yuki In general, I suppose

@OrigamiRobot Bleh. Put it on a plate, man.
That's what they're for.

@fbueckert Waste of a plate.

12:48 AM
I feel like that the dungeon crawling varies slightly in gameplay feel with each game.

I only need a paper towel to keep the crumbs in check

user15026
@OrigamiRobot What about like pots or pans

@AshleyNunn Rarely use them.

Tides of Destiny felt... a little boring in regards to the dungeon puzzles.
If you could call them "puzzles", even.

[FREE VALHALLA KNIGHTS] Leading up to the launch of Valhalla Knights 3 later this month, Valhalla Knights 1 is free to all NA PSN members!
Call E H and F made it in to the second round of voting for Mighty No 9
(Valhalla nights is for PSP and PS Vita btw)

12:50 AM
@BenBrocka All NA PSN members or just Plus members?

@BenBrocka Interesting.

@Yuki One would assume that "members" is the elevated status above "filthy pigs".

@FEichinger Oink oink.

user15026
@OrigamiRobot Fair enough

Also, that's an insult. To filthy pigs, that is.

12:52 AM
If you have a PS3 or PS Vita and not PS+ you're completely insane but yes it's free to everyone not just PS+

@AshleyNunn Though I did just use a pot for popcorn because I don't have a large bowl

@BenBrocka I have been meaning to see a psychiatrist some time soon...

@BenBrocka Oops.

@BenBrocka "I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it."

Like seriously hundreds of dollars of free games a year and requiring it for online play is the only way 90% of people will buy into plus. It's ridiculous

12:56 AM
On a related note, what could cause my PS3 to be unable to read discs?
I'm guessing that I just need to clean the lens, right?

Probably. Do the disks spin?

@BenBrocka I'm hearing "spinning" I put them in, if that's what you're talking about.

@Yuki I would try it, and if it doesn't work, get it some repairing. If it's under warranty, send it in.

My local electronics repair shop just wants to replace the entire disc drive, which I feel is a bit overkill.
@Coronus Not under warranty any more so I'm thinking about buying a set of those security screwdrivers and cleaning it myself.
Since the only other option in town is the equivalent of the nuclear option.

It is probably the lens, it's easier to get dusk on a lens than to break other mechanisms, for the most part

12:59 AM
Should I try opening it up myself? I mean, I have some rudimentary experience with opening up and messing with electronics.

worst case you try cleaning the lens, the lens cleaning disk damages the lens but doesn't fix the problem, then you have the whole thing replaced which is basically your other option anyway

@Yuki Get a lens cleaning set first.

I open my PSP Go on a regular occasion to rejigger the response on the shoulder buttons.
Then again, the PSP Go doesn't have something fancy like a disc drive...

There's really not much to look at with the PS3 disk drive
There's no "tray" to open or anything, at least on the fat one it's basically a solid unit
Do you have compressed air and one of those long "aiming" tube things for it? might start with that (be careful to keep it level)
I absolutely hate the 3DS' camera feature. Why did they map it to L and R, the easiest buttons to hit by mistake, on the home screen

user43095
Hey guys, what's a salt?

1:06 AM
Depends on the context.
Cryptography?

@JeffreyLin Context?

user43095
Yes, cryptography.

Oh, that's a fun one. But I'll leave it to @Brant, he seems jumpy on it. :P

user15026
@BenBrocka I dont know and I haaaaaaaate it

@JeffreyLin NaCl, also known as sodium chloride.

1:06 AM
Just don't hit people with it. That would be...
A salt and battery

There are these things called "hash functions" that let you turn a string of text (like a password) into another string of text (like a23bd34ef1241) such that if you only have the hash, it's mathematically impossible to get the original password.

@BenBrocka Two drums and cymbal fall off a cliff.

38 questions tagged "salt" on our Cryptography Stack Exchange. Hohum.

If you have a big-ass computer, you can calculate the hashes for all possible passwords ahead of time.
So when you're writing software that deals with passwords, you mix the password with a "salt" before you hash it, so those pre-computed hashes ("rainbow tables") aren't any good.

@Brant Tangent: What would a big ass-computer be and/or involve?

user43095
1:08 AM
@Brant Can I make it so that the salt isn't know until a certain date? Perhaps by using the server hash of a provably fair gambling site?

@Yuki But no one is around, so does it make the sound?

Before I answer that question I must warn you that I am rapidly approaching drunk and taking cryptography advice from me is probably not a good idea
(OR THE MOST AWESOME IDEA)

user43095
Err... give it to me. Let's see the results.

@JeffreyLin This sounds like the intro to an X-Y-problem.

user43095
@FEichinger Wat?

1:09 AM
@wipqozn I hope @OrigamiRobot gets this game so he can fight the sloths on level 2.

That said, I don't really understand the problem.

Q: What is the XY problem?

GnomeWhat is the XY problem? When asking questions, how do I recognize when I'm falling into it? How do I avoid it? Return to FAQ index

@Yuki GPUs, it turns out, are really good at the particular type of number-crunching that hash functions involve. A few top-end nvidia cards can do it at a pretty good rate.

user43095
@Brant Bitcoin mining!

Of course it all depends on how many hashes you want to precalculate.

1:11 AM
@Brant I meant a "big ass-computer" as opposed to a "big-ass computer".
Related question: how does one compute asses?

@Yuki I do that too. Curse you, xkcd.

user43095
@FEichinger Okay, so I'm making a game in which you buy crates and inside will be either object x, y, or z. I needs the random stuffs to make it fair and in such a way that I do not know the results and that the prizes cannot be guessed by brute-forcing the hashes.

@Yuki Is that a computer that you sit on? What does it compute?

@JeffreyLin So the problem you have is that you want to have a particular value, but not have it known to anyone until a certain date passes?

user43095
Until the date of which the lottery actually occurs, but I may not be possible the way I'm doing it.

1:13 AM
I guess you could take the value and encrypt it, publish the resulting ciphertext, and then reveal the decryption key at a future date

user15026
@Coronus The weight of bottoms?

(or to put it another way, encrypt the file, stick it on dropbox, then reveal the decryption password in a few weeks)
but I'm not sure if that's what you're asking for

user43095
Ah, so I'm overcomplicating things then.

user43095
But what I don't want is people accusing me that I know the results, so the salt should be from a third-party.

Ugh. I need to get started on my database systems homework but I'm lazy and want to look at pictures and livestreams of kitties instead.

1:15 AM
@Sterno NTY

user43095
But the problem with that is that I don't process the crates until all of them have been bought, which is who knows when

user43095
See my problem?

@JeffreyLin That's not possible. You always have the code generating it, so you can always read out the salt and the like.

user43095
@OrigamiRobot You're a computer. Help me.

@JeffreyLin With what?

user43095
1:16 AM
@OrigamiRobot ^

And yes, I have the link to a livestream of kitties on my bookmarks bar.
Anybody want?

What you could do, is outsourcing the hashing entirely. I could probably cook up an API for that.

@JeffreyLin Something something salt?

mumbles something about key escrow

But that's still way too complicated.

1:16 AM
oh god why did I ever think mixing gin and brandy would be a good idea

@Brant You wanted to get drunk at the time and didn't care how?

Oh yeah, that's why.

I still need to buy copious amounts of alcohol at some point and attempt to get drunk.

1:19 AM
Oh, so if a trusted person has the key which I haven't seen before (and he's forbidden to enter the contest) it would be both provably fair and could be released when I want him to

user15026
@Yuki Never drank? Or just high tolerance?

I have not yet experienced drunkenness and the hangover that ensues, which I'm told is a key life experience and/or important stop on the road to adulthood.
@AshleyNunn Not sure if I have high tolerance. But I have drunk. Drank? Drink-a-did?

user15026
@Yuki I dunno about hangovers, but I rarely get them, and I can drink a lot.... (being a fat girl has its benefits :P)

Q: How can tell if I'll get a free point in a skill once I meet its prerequisite?

SternoAt least twice so far, I've put points in a skill to meet the prerequisite for other skills, and upon meeting that prerequisite, I got a free point in the new "unlocked" skill. Other times, though, I've gotten no free points. For example, after my alchemist put 5 points in Fire Formula, he did n...

@AshleyNunn Is drinking two... shots(?) of single-malt whiskey, an old-fashioned, and a bottle of beer and not having a buzz considered high tolerance?

1:21 AM
@JeffreyLin That would work if people trust you, which is the same problem you face if you just skip that step.

user43095
@AshleyNunn You're not fat...

@Yuki Over how long?

@Brant I'd say about an hour or two.
Probably an hour and a half?

Actually, I take that back, it means people would have to trust you and the trusted third party (I misread that)
So it's an improvement, I guess.

user15026
@JeffreyLin Oh, sweetie, I totally am, and I am super okay with that :)

1:22 AM
@Yuki That's probably above average.

It was a couple of months ago, so I'm not sure exactly how time elapsed.

user15026
@Yuki I have no idea, I'd say more than average for sure

There are a ton of variables though, so who knows

@Yuki Depends on what you consider "not having a buzz", I guess.

user15026
I just know how much I drink and how often people are surprised about how much it takes to make me drunk

1:23 AM
@FEichinger No buzzing sound/feel in my head? No loss of orientation or balance?

Okay, then it also depends on the region. In NA that would be above average, in Europe it's rather normal, in my experience.

user43095
Okay, my head hurts.

user43095
@FEichinger I thought Europians held their liquor quite well, whereas Americans come second and Asians just bomb.

I got some Jack Daniels lemonade this weekend and was disappointed at how little of a buzz 4 bottles gave me. This is why I don't drink beer

@BenBrocka That's because it was lemonade.

1:27 AM
Down with Malternatives!

user43095
@BenBrocka Doesn't that have only ~4% alcohol?

user15026
@BenBrocka You just gotta drink strong beer!

5%, could definitely be higher

@JeffreyLin Americans also consider "beer" something completely different from what Europeans consider "beer". :P

if I weren't lazy I mix my own, but I usually just make margaritas or daquiris if I'm going to do that

user15026
1:27 AM
@BenBrocka mmmmm :D

@FEichinger not those of us who refuse to drink canned beer

user15026
@FEichinger Curious what you think the difference is

user43095
@FEichinger What's the difference? I never knew there was one.

1:28 AM
I assume he means cheap mass produced beer vs beer that isn't garbage water

user15026
@FEichinger I hate most highly commercial American/Canadian beer (Coors, Molson, etc)

I like to recommend the Sidecar to people who don't usually enjoy mixed drinks. Ignore the ratios on the Wikipedia article, use 1:1:1 brandy:triple sec:lemon juice. What makes it a great "starter" is that you can mess with the ratios on your own and figure out what you like.

I don't drink.
So I can't participate in this discussion. =[

user15026
@Brant mmmmm sidecars.

It doesn't taste super "boozy" or "hot" (like a martini), and it's the perfect cocktail archetype (it has a spirit, a liquor, and a juice)

1:30 AM
Well, that was weird.
All of a sudden, nobody's avatar was loading and I couldn't enter messages.

user43095
Interesting. About five years from now, I will drink a beer here, then personally travel to Europe to have a beer there.

I like to use 2:1:1 myself.

@FEichinger In any case, that's in large part due to the Prohibition. American beer culture pretty much got reset and it's only recently been sorta recovering.

user43095
I look forward to being a college student.

user43095
1:32 AM
Do you know what's the saddest story ever?

I saw a poster/ad at a local pub (I don't remember what beer it was shilling) that had the text, "What's the matter, lager boy, afraid you might taste something?" It neatly summarized my feelings toward that particular variety of beer.

@JeffreyLin The Titanic?

user43095
I am the only person who can do anything with computers at my school. Everyone else is just incredibly clueless, even about the general things. When they ask me why, I have only two answers: The Bridge and Stack Exchange

user15026
@Brant Love it

user43095
Thank you guys for filling my head with random stuff. I appreciate it

1:34 AM

I should learn to make martinis, I'd have to get a shaker though. I have the glasses

@JeffreyLin US Government receives news of Half-Life 3, shuts down in disbelief

@JeffreyLin It's okay as long as you are capable of thinking about things on your own without just listening to what everyone else says.

user43095
@Brant I laughed way too hard at that.

Q: Having trouble adding a friend

RetrosaurI don't know why, but I can't seem to add someone as a friend. Whenever I click add as friend, it says "Friend invite sent". What doesn't show up is an "invitations sent" listing on my friends list. This is pretty frustrating any help? I've been using both the browser version and steam client ...

user43095
On a serious note though, 80k people are out of a job.

user43095
1:39 AM
Even the hotdog vendor on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty is out of a job.

user43095
I'm not sure how long school will stay open.

@JeffreyLin And yet, the very people responsible are still getting paid.

@BenBrocka You don't really need a shaker. You can just use a tall glass and a bunch of ice and stir it.
The important part is 1) lowering the temperature of the drink and 2) diluting the drink with water so you aren't drinking straight-up jet fuel

user43095
@FEichinger But aren't they part of the governments?

@JeffreyLin Only a certain % get furloughed
some people are on fixed contracts and others are considered essential. It's a partial shutdown

user43095
1:40 AM
@BenBrocka That percentage increases every day.

stir vs. shake is largely a factor of what the cocktail in question contains. Shaking is better because it does 1) and 2) better, but for clear drinks (like martinis) you usually want to stir instead of shake because it keeps the drink clear and pretty, unless you're either James Bond or you don't give a crap.

And the shutdown applies only to federal government, I believe. Local and state employees are unaffected. I still went in to work today.

In other news, as it turns out I'm really bad at shaving when it's 4am ... Cutting myself, tsk.

Shaking makes a cocktail cloudy because of microbubbles and all that, but for most drinks that isn't an issue because you're putting in fruit juice or something non-clear anyway.

I usually make drinks either for myself or for people amazed I have the right glasses, so a slightly ugly drink isn't a huge deal

user43095
1:42 AM
@Yuki So school won't close? Aww

@FEichinger Messing with congressional salary is very hard since they're supposed to be the most powerful part of the government.

@Ullallulloo Because that worked out so well.

(I only have the right glasses for margaritas, martinis, red and white wines though)

@JeffreyLin Probably not.

Maybe they would be a bit more eager to fix this if they weren't getting paid :(

user43095
1:43 AM
@Yuki I looked forward to that.

Shaking vs. stirring can affect mouthfeel too, I guess, so I guess some people might prefer a shaken drink even if it's made with clear ingredients.

@JeffreyLin I was wondering whether I had to go in to work during the commute.

@SaintWacko IMO filibusters and, worse, shit like this, should cause an instant congressional paycut

user43095
I would actually get personal stuff done. Would had learned some coding and stuff.

@Brant how tall of a glass are we talking?

user43095
1:44 AM
@BenBrocka Especially people who filibust themselves.

@BenBrocka Filibusters were kinda sorta useful back when the rules made sense.

Something pint glass sized, I guess? Just fill it up with ice, measure the cocktail ingredients into it, and stir until it's cold/diluted enough.
Then strain it into your glass.

@BenBrocka Yeah, that would be great. Unfortunately, the people who would vote that into place are the people that would be affected by that

user43095
Saturday Night Live News this week is going to be amusing.

Nowadays, you can hand a filibuster off to another representative like some kind of weird ass-relay race.

1:45 AM
@JeffreyLin Ooh, I can't wait
I forget what that segment's called

user43095
@SaintWacko Hopefully, they will all be booted out the next election.

@SaintWacko Weekend Update with (Whoever)?

@Yuki Ah, that's right

user43095
@Yuki You don't even have to. Just call in and threaten to filibust and then everyone craps themselves.

@JeffreyLin Ha

1:45 AM
I could do that. Will have to pick some stuff up next time I'm at the grocery store

user43095
And on that note, I'm out. Hope the government gets better and that I don't have school. Bye guys.

Straining it might be tricky (you usually use a hawthorn strainer) but I just use a fork to hold back the ice because screw hawthorn strainers.

I really hate and/or dislike my Senator.

@Yuki Bloomberg was being an idiot the third term.

Blah, people need to stop linking to that "4 rules to make Star Wars great again" video. Counterpoints.

@MichaelDunfield Huh. Weird. I was literally just talking to @OrigamiRobot about that. <_<

Ted Cruz is pretty much the reason why we're in this whole mess, right?

4 rules to make star wars great again:
1. Stop.
2. Don't.
3. No.
4. Just come on.

@Yuki What, the government shutdown? No, that would be Mark Meadows, a freshmen representative from... drum roll ...North Carolina! Which is shocking, since North Carolina hasn't done anything else stupid recently.

I stopped being affected by things when I resolved to believe Star Wars ultimately just became a source for LEGO video games.

@GraceNote I'm... actually okay with this.

Let's have a moment of silence for @OrigamiRobot, @RavenDreamer, @spugsley, and @IanPugsley.

@TimStone wat why O_o

@TimStone Hm?

I never got a Lego video game after that (amazing) one where you could fly a helicopter or make a pizza and stuff and wander around

@BenBrocka Wait, is development on the Iconoclasts resuming?

Resuming? He's been at it
I follow his twitter, he's definitely still working on it

@TimStone Yay... freshman representatives...
They all seem to be a bunch of senseless idiots.

@BenBrocka I should note it has been... many months... since I last checked up on Konjak.

@TimStone Don't blame me. I voted for Kodos.
