@badp How long is the lock for? If you're planning on keeping it locked for a week or more, please to be refunding my bounty :(

@MarkTrapp I had originally selected the lock to be permanent but that's obviously no longer necessary

@badp Elephant shoes!

user2334
8:01 PM
aw, I gotta wait 23 minutes

@MarkTrapp lol

@MarkTrapp aw.
Well thanks for warning anyway, the permanent lock was unnecessary and wrong

But... Can you reward a community post?

@MichelAyres Yes, it should work

user2334
Yeah, bounties on CW is a common thing

user2334
8:02 PM
It's saying I can do it at any rate too

@MarkTrapp Why? I mean...

user2334
CW posts need love too! But they gotta pay.

user2334
But the CW in this case is less due to the post and more to the circumstances

There is a way (right?) to create a CW question. How is it?

user2334
@MichelAyres Normal users can't explicitly create CW questions, only CW answers. Mods can do both. Questions get automatically converted to CW when they get 30 or more answers

user2334
8:07 PM
Answers get automatically converted to CW if they get too many edits

@MarkTrapp Or ten people editing it.

Ahhh only mods/Trust users can create CW question (from the scrath) =P

user2334
@Ullallulloo I don't think questions are affected by the editing auto-CW, are they? That's a heck of a thing, since question CW cascades

Not even trusted users can create CW questions
The thing is CW questions... eh, they're hardly ever useful

@badp =O

8:09 PM
actually their use has been counterproductive so far
so it's been made mod-only

@badp Hmmmmmmmmm

Grace Note on August 19, 2011

When you mark a post community wiki on a Stack Exchange site, that means …

this post can be edited by anyone with 100 reputation

this post does not generate any reputation for anyone when upvoted or downvoted

The main advantage of community wiki — more editing — was nerfed when we introduced suggested edits. With suggested edits, anyone, even an anonymous user, can edit anything — so long as another experienced user reviews and approves their edit.

This leaves many wondering — what’s the point of Community Wiki? …

↑ for more info
now - community wiki answers are a completely different matter.
You check the mark, people with 150 rep can edit without going through the queue...
I'm not even sure CW makes sense for answers either anymore
but that's the way it is

user2334
@Ullallulloo The Shog9meister says you're right. But it doesn't cascade to existing answers, only new answers. The More You Know™

@MarkTrapp - re: gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/6591/…. Did you actually have the same question with regards to XIII-2? Every few months I consider deleting that question because it isn't very good and has not received any good answers, but if someone else is looking for the same information...

user2334
@JasonBerkan Well, I know what it is and how it's used: it's a big thing in FF13-2, moreso than FF13, and it's explicitly mentioned in the strategy guides and walkthroughs and such. I referenced the tactic a couple of times in other answers: here and here

user2334
8:16 PM
I thought Keanu's answered covered your question: what are you looking for? I can write something up

user2334
I think it's a good question for those new to the FF13 series because it's hell of useful if you're not keen to cheesing fights by over-leveling

My problem with Keanu's answer is that while it may be true, it's just looking at the other side of the coin. I was wondering why such a powerful tactic was never mentioned in the game (which has a fairly robust combat tutorial).
(And that's why my question ain't that good - it's "why did the devs do this.")

user2334
Ah: I'll see if they mentioned it in FF13-2's primers later today. I know it's intended, but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be an easter egg, or if it's being retro-conned in a way to be intended (bug in the battle system that they're okay with and balanced around in FF13-2)

user2334
My gut is that if the official guide mentions it all the time, it's an official mechanic. They generally have to get signed off by the developers to publish that

user2334
retconned* stupid auto-correct

Q: How do I unlock courses in Mario Kart Wii?

Michael BishopI imagine I have to win some cups in single-player mode. Can someone be more specific than that? A link to a site with the info would be fine. I'm disappointed by the organization of the sites I checked out. I couldn't find the answer.

Q: How can I jump farther in Ski Safari?

authenticgeekI've noticed that sometimes after I hit a jump I'll catch a bit of air and float a bit rather than dropping like a rock towards the hill below me. Is there something I'm doing that is helping me make a longer jump or is it random? Can I do something similar with penguin skis, yetis and snowmobiles?

Following this part of comment:

"Community wiki is for that rare gem of a post that needs true community collaboration. That’s when community wiki shines. If your site is teeming with community wiki posts — particularly in questions — you should consider the above points carefully."

What could be a good CW post in Gaming? (well, is a good subject for a chat xD)

user2334
There was a question about how to determine if your computer can handle a game

Hmm @MarkTrapp that should work like the one about the time to finish a game.

I think we're going to have to decide how we're going to start enforcing this: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/4111/…

WOW!!!!!!! First time i ever saw @bwarner in the chat o.o

8:35 PM
It's no longer possible for people to play the beta to find the answer to a question. So it's now a question of whether the answer is publicly available/known ahead of time or not.

is kind weird, I always spec him to appears in Diablo Q&A =X

Should we be making close decisions based on whether someone knows the answer already? Should we be closing questions where the answer is already known?
@MichelAyres Really? I'm pretty sure we've been in chat at the same time on several ocassions, though it is always hard to tell whether people are actually "here".
I'm usually here during my lunch break. =)

@bwarner true.

It's theoretically possible to learn the answer to this question with the beta. But I haven't found the answer anywhere, and I'm doubting that anyone knows for sure at this point. gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/65119/…

I don't know, there are lots of [tag:diablo-3] questions that meet the a good answer, and we can always update for any change or even close/delete if the question is not relevant in the game anymore (because they remove it from).

Most of the answers/questions have good arguments.

8:41 PM
@bwarner And the beta is over by this point. There is literally no way to test it (and thereby provide a decent answer) at this moment.

@bwarner Now you got a good one... this question should be closed. there is no info about it at all.

@fbueckert But what if someone tested it during the beta already?

@BenBrocka, would a question about the usability of buttons with letters vs the glyphs they did on the PS controller be on topic on UX?

I don't think they did, but its just weird to make decisions based on that. So I'm just going to go with whatever Grace's infinite wisdom decides.

@LessPopMoreFizz I'm enjoying Silversun's new album a bunch. I think you will find it a most tasty crunch.

8:45 PM
We just need to announce the inevitable Diablo 3 contest, that way people will have incentive to hold their questions until the actual release!

@bwarner even if someone tested. it can change very easily, also is gonna be a poor source.

My opinion: Should be close and wait for the release, then re-opened and put in the first page again

@MichelAyres no, we had that as a strategy, and it was shot down.

@agent86 I think we had almost the same question before actually

@MichelAyres Yah, that just allows people to "camp" questions, which we don't want to encourage.

@bwarner I think if a question cannot be tested, and thereby answered, at the time of asking, it should be closed.

Q: Have usability studies been conducted on the use of alphanumeric characters as labels for controller buttons?

ahsteeleController Question Over the years there have been a wide variety of home consoles each with their own (mostly) unique controller designs1. One thing that most consoles have in common is their use of beginning / ending alphanumeric characters. The most obvious exception is the various Playstatio...

@fbueckert So that would go for this too? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/64988/…

Q: How should we handle non-beta pre-release questions?

Grace NoteThis is separate from questions about gameplay during betas, which are a beast of a different caliber with a different set of issues. We all know the feeling of being excited about an upcoming game release. I mean, we're all gamers, after all! But our FAQ prohibits questions about speculation ...

@bwarner True. I'm holding a question about pokemon v2 have a couple of month... but I didn't post it.

What about this one where the answer was well known at the time? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/64977/…

it's my personal opinion that it's OK to ask diablo 3 questions that could be answered from beta knowledge - I draw the line when people say "at release will X be Y" because that's speculation.

8:47 PM
And if that one is OK, how do we define "well known"?

@bwarner Yes. At this point, it would be speculation, without the ability to confirm.

it's fine to base questions or answers on the beta, even if it's over.

@bwarner Hrm. That is a bit of a quandry. That one has an official source.

both gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/64988/… and gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/65119/… are great questions, but neither can be answered at the moment

if you want to speculate on the game mechanics post-release, that's off topic.

8:51 PM
So if something could theoretically have been answered by the beta, it stays? I'm OK with that, in which case that question is fine. I just don't think we'll see an answer until after the 15th.

It's going to suck. Don't get me wrong :)
we're going to have more than one of these discussions

@agent86 Following this logic, Every answer in those questions are gonna be speculated
@agent86 -note: I'm talking about the 2 questions linked above

there's data available, people have played the beta. we can say authoritatively "in the beta, the mechanic worked like X"
and if people start to speculate, we downvote the crap out of them

user2334
We're only talking about what, a week before the game releases?

@agent86 It could be argued that since it was a beta, game mechanics are not set in stone, hence the answer would not be authoritative.

8:55 PM
@MarkTrapp ten days (@StrixVaria could tell you in seconds)

user2334
I make a motion to table and ignore the issue until May 15th

@fbueckert "it could change in the future" is not a valid reason to forbid questions
the counter-argument to this is we'd never be able to ask any minecraft questions :)

Yah, I'm not worried about the mechanic changing. I'm just worried about the broken windows we'll have to live with for the next 10 days, and the "camping" of questions for rep gain.

@MarkTrapp good point ...

But is good decide this now (with D3) and prevent future trouble (like with Titan from blizzard)

user2334
@bwarner Is there a real chance the answers to the questions would be wrong? I thought the open beta was just a stress test

8:56 PM
@bwarner it's a mess! welcome to using a system in a way it wasn't designed for! see also: tagging

@MarkTrapp Highly unlikely. The game mechanics aren't likely to change dramatically in that short period.

@MarkTrapp The beta released by blizz was a stress test ONLY

I'm just playing devil's advocate here; I'm fine with whatever we decide.

@fbueckert lol

But as agent86 said, its kind of a moot point, since we don't shy away from answers that could change, and I don't think its fair to call answers based on the beta "speculation".

8:59 PM
Fair enough.
I do agree with the camping bit though.

There is no good way of doing this. and at this point, even with close or not closed questions. They can "save" the question.

yeah, it's a thorny nasty thing. Everybody petition game companies not to release betas, so that we don't have this issue in the future.

Just got back from The Avengers. It gets a thumbs up. I liked it better than any of the individual movies.

@agent86 lol.

also, let's see about educating everyone on the internet about the fact that we don't do speculation. I'll take the left half of the internet, and you guys split the right.
@Sterno this is one of two movies I'm interested in, batman the third being the second.

9:02 PM
watches agent86 attempt to wrestle the internet. And WIN

@Sterno sweet. I'm going to see it in a couple of hours

@agent86 only half left? why ? KILL THEM ALL
Hmmm following this. Should we re-open this question?

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/31738/are-there-any-diablo-3-item-databases

@MichelAyres that wasn't closed because it was regarding the D3 beta or pre-release, but more because those types of questions quickly become "list of X"

Another one \o/

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/65141/does-cold-blooded-really-reduce-channeling-cost-to-0

Haha, I love it. I see 3 new messages so I go 'Oooh, maybe its working again!' and come on over.. but nope. Some how 3 messages snuck through with the 'We seem to have connection issues' overlay, hehe.

9:06 PM
@agent86 Hmmm, never saw one of that so I couldn't know. Sorry.

Trailers before the movie: Spider-Man, Batman, Prometheus, Battleship. It was like a nerdgasm
(okay, Battleship is an edge case)

@Sterno I was about to say...

It caters to the "Transformers 3 was awesome!" crowd

@Sterno I am pretty sure that I will go wearing a Dr. Who/MLP shirt with someone dressed as Darth Vader for extra nerdyness

@MichelAyres And that one couldn't possibly be answered by the beta, since that rune is level 28. So I'd say close/delete.

9:07 PM
all 6 of them

@Sterno I enjoyed that movie for what it was

I thought we were boycotting Bay.

@MichelAyres List of X questions are one type of question where every answer is equally valid. "What's the (best) site for X?" questions tend to fall into this category. It's something that SE as a network tries to avoid.

@NickT I would watch this movie.

9:10 PM
@agent86 so would I

@bwarner So that falls under "Couldn't possible be answered before neither now" I agree in the "Close it"
@agent86 what you say?

@MichelAyres I would watch a movie that was just stuff blowing up?

@agent86 popcorn and coke?

pew pew pew BOOOOM

@agent86 It's on topic though, if the linked question doesn't answer your question
(question answer your question...whatever)

9:13 PM
@BenBrocka Talking about this question? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/65141/…

@BenBrocka oh, yeah, I think that's enough of an answer. Someone was asking me about it, and I thought about asking it on UX, but it had already been asked, so wooo

Click the arrow to see what I was talking about :P but no, not that Q

AHHHH Where is @GraceNote I miss him/her/it

@Ben I find your comment offensive.

how come the bots always get such sick draws in MTG-DOTP

9:17 PM
@agent86 FWIW I reallyl ike that the PS controller separates their buttons into "sections". Letters only for L/R mapped buttons, symbols for "face" buttons, keeps everything segregated logically

@IanPugsley 898927

@RonanForman I find your offense commentable

@BenBrocka the part that drives me crazy is going Xbox/PS and back again. The X buttons are in different locations :| I fail more QTEs because of that

bah
playthrough 2 skagzilla is worth more experience than playthrough 1 destroyer

9:19 PM
@agent86 Ah. switching contexts is hard when there's overlap + different conventions
Sorta like false friends

@MichelAyres Do you... need me for something?

What drives ME nuts is playing originally japanese PS games that map X and O as No and Yes then planing US/international ones that map them the opposite way...

@BenBrocka yeah, that is a pain as well. I know this feel, bro

@BenBrocka Try having to switch back and forth between this every few weeks

@GraceNote try snark snark snark snark!
... I just felt the need to snark you a bit.

9:22 PM
@GraceNote No, not really. Just saw so much your nick today that I start missing you <3

@GraceNote I have repeatedly, mostly due to the Xenosaga games
though I think 3 finally localized the X/O mapping

@MichelAyres I see...

fuck this, bot pumps out 3 illusions which all stack with each other, then time warps two turns in a row
ffffffff gg

@Mana It's true.
so Tera Online looks prety good

10:04 PM
@Wipqozn I hear it's actually not that hot.

@Mana I actually heard the same thing about Tera.. The combat is pretty fun.
Have not tried it though, will admit that.

@Mana Oh my. That's not good.
Any more details aside from "not that hot"?

May the 4th be with you all!
@Mana From Gnome?
And yeah, it's ported from a Korean MMO, so I imagine it'd be kinda grind-y.

@RavenDreamer DIE.

@Mana Um. No.

10:12 PM
Beware the Revenge of the Fifth

@Wipqozn Very grind-y, as I've heard.

@Mana Oh my. That's annoying.

But idk, maybe they fixed it up a bit for the NA release?
I haven't played it.

Yeah, it looks good for the most part...
I'm a little concerned that some of the boss battles look like they would be boring in large groups.
Since you basically have one or two people tank, and everyone else stands back mindlessly mashing buttons.
and by some I mean all
I just wish Guild Wars 2 would hurry up and be out.
Scumbag Guild Wars 2.
Not being finished yet.
I see @AshleyNunn has returned to being @AshleyNunn.

user15026
@Wipqozn yup.

10:21 PM
@Wipqozn Is that supposed to make sense?

She used to be derped

Hey, now. No insulting each other!

@Mana I thought "online" in a game title meant "grindy"

@BenBrocka There are various levels though.

user15026
@BenBrocka Just because the name changed doesn't mean I'm not derpy ;)

10:25 PM
This seems relevant.

More like Grind Wars, The Grind for Grinding

@Mana Yeah, I have it here, I'll check it out when I'm done listening to Paul's Boutique on repeat, as I have been all day

@Wipqozn @Thomas and I were thinking of having a day where we all hop on the SG server and kill the enderdragon, do you want to do it for game on! to boost numbers on the server?

I love that Blizzard is inserting pop-culture references in their achievements again
Portal 2, Dexter (Serial Killer, not Laboratory), and a Futurama Reference.

Does the Space core actually say that specifically?

I think so

That's one of the few things about space I don't remember him saying

Fairly sure he says that, yes.
While in space.

10:46 PM
@RavenDreamer What's the Dexter reference?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Slice of Life is Dexter's boat

@RavenDreamer That is a room full of goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, orcs, bugbears and other lovelies.
Also known as a throne room.

@RavenDreamer Hate to break it to you, but that is a cliche that goes much further back than a random recent tv show

@LessPop_MoreFizz Hey! Maybe you're not invited into my delusion, hunh?

Also, Socket To Me, and I Got What You Need are references as well, lets not forget.

10:47 PM
@RonanForman Sounds fine to me. Any preference on date?

Slice of life is a phrase describing the use of mundane realism depicting everyday experiences in art and entertainment. Theater The theatrical term refers to a naturalistic representation of real life, sometimes used as an adjective, as in "a play with 'slice of life' dialogue." The term originated in 1890–95 as a translation from the French phrase tranche de vie, credited to the French playwright Jean Jullien (1854–1919). Jullien introduced the term not long after a staging of his play, The Serenade, as noted by Wayne S. Turney in his essay, "Notes on Naturalism in the Theatre": :The S...

@LessPopMoreFizz It could be a post facto reference too
In fact, I have just made it so. bam.
There's also "Breaking not so bad"
Ha

The One Percent is the funny one there

Another throne room? Sheesh.

@Wipqozn Maybe in 2 weeks? I want to announce it so people have time to get set up on the server ith gear and stuff first.

@RonanForman Okay. We'll do it as the "fourth week game"
@RonanForman Saturday or Sunday?

Shouldn't the fourth week be non-minecraft? We can do it in 3 weeks if it doesn't fit.

@RonanForman 3 weeks it is

That's the 27th right?

11:06 PM
the sunday is the 27th, yes

@Raven I was more checking we were counting the weeks the same.

Just tryin' to be helpful

There's no sarcasm there.

Nor resentment from me.

@RonanForman Yes

11:13 PM

@Ullallulloo Oh god, you're in the Hegemony chat. Why are you in the Hegemony chat.
This is like some kind of bad dream.

11:26 PM
@Mana What?

or massive coincidence.

I have no idea what that is...

@Ullallulloo Kongregate. The chatroom you're in.

I think @Mana is stalking you @Ullallulloo.

@Mana Oh, it seems Kong put me there.

11:27 PM
Come to think of it, most people there probably get thrown into a chatroom and pay absolutely no attention to it.

I didn't pick it by choice. :p

Mana stalks everybody.
It's part of the job.

@Ullallulloo Oh, good. The people there are...interesting, in the wrong way. They were fun as hell to troll two years ago though anyways.

@RavenDreamer It is probably to help him with all those fan fics he's working on.

I like @tombull89's gravatar.

11:29 PM
@RavenDreamer He's giving the thumbs down to you.

@RavenDreamer Heh, thanks. Was originally meant to show my dissaproval with the SE/Facebook "partnership" that meant a load of cruddy questions got dumped on MSO and SO but even though that's been sorted I've not changed the gravatar back yet.

@tombull89 What happened to that anyways?

hrm, 6850 vs 7770....
f this
I hate shopping

@Mana Seems to have mellowed - FB have got a bit more "involved" with things on SO and the question about policies that prompted my gravatar change has been [status-completed]
I'm not a huge SO user but a decent MSO one, still think it's a bad idea.

tomshardware.com/reviews/… scroll down half-way, wtf do all these numbers mean, which is better, 7770 (1st column) or 6850 (3rd)

@NickT They mean PRETTY COLORS
